)

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image display medium capable of reversibly changing a visual state by moving white particles and colored particles charged by the action of an electric field in a dispersion medium, and an image display apparatus having the image display medium.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, display devices such as cathode ray tubes (CRT) and liquid crystal displays have been used as image display devices that display images such as characters, still images, and moving images. These display devices can display digital data instantly and can be rewritten, but (1) it is difficult to carry because it is installed and used on a tabletop, etc. (2) There were problems such as eye fatigue when working while watching this for a long time, and (3) unable to display with the power off.
[0003]
On the other hand, information based on digital data such as characters and still images is recorded on a paper medium by a printer when distributed as a paper medium such as a document or stored as a paper medium such as a document. Paper media on which such information is recorded are widely used as hard copies. Hard copy is (a) easy to read characters than a display, (b) less tiring eyes, (c) can be read in a free posture, and (d) light and free to carry. , Etc. However, the hard copy is discarded or recycled after being used. However, since this requires a lot of labor and cost, there is a problem in terms of resource saving.
[0004]
Therefore, there is a growing need for a rewritable paper-like display medium that has the advantages of both display and hard copy, and polymer dispersed liquid crystal elements, bistable cholesteric liquid crystal elements, electrochromic elements, and electrophoretic elements. And other display media have been proposed. These display media are attracting attention as having a reflective and bright display and having a memory property. Among them, a display medium using an electrophoretic element (hereinafter referred to as “electrophoretic display medium”) is excellent in terms of display quality, power consumption at the time of display operation, and the like, for example, JP-A-5-173194. And Japanese Patent No. 2612472.
[0005]
In such an electrophoretic display medium, a colored dispersion medium is enclosed between a pair of transparent electrodes, and a plurality of electrophoretic particles having a color different from the color are contained in the colored dispersion medium. Is distributed. The electrophoretic particles have a charge on the surface in the dispersion medium. Therefore, when a voltage opposite to the electrophoretic particle charge is applied to one of the pair of transparent electrodes, the electrophoretic particles are transparent. The color of the migrating particles is observed by depositing on one of the particles, and when a voltage having the same direction as the charge of the migrating particles is applied, the migrating particles move to the opposite side, so the color of the dispersion medium is observed. Information is displayed on the electrophoretic display medium based on such a principle.
[0006]
As a dispersion medium used for the electrophoretic display medium, generally, an electrically insulating nonpolar organic solvent is used. These non-polar organic solvents include (1) aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane, dodecane, ligroin, solvent naphtha (isobar H, G, L). , K (made by Exxon Chemical Co., Ltd.), Cielsol (made by Shell Sekiyu Co., Ltd.) and the like, and (2) halogenated hydrocarbons such as tetrachloroethylene.
[0007]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the dispersion medium composed of these non-polar organic solvents has high volatility. Therefore, when used in a display medium and a display device at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure, Since a part of the gas may be vaporized, there is a problem that it is ignited and it is difficult to ensure the stability of the display operation. In addition, these dispersion media have a risk of generating a large amount of vapor harmful to the human body and a fire when the display medium and the display device are broken and leaked. In particular, halogenated hydrocarbons are generally toxic, and it is not realistic to select these to produce products such as display media and display devices.
[0008]
In order to solve these problems, Japanese Patent No. 2612474 discloses that a dispersion medium made of a compound having a linear alkylbenzene structure is used as a display medium. However, the dispersion medium composed of such a compound has a flash point higher than that of benzene, toluene, etc., but many of them have a specific odor and are generally highly irritating to the skin. When the dispersion medium breaks and leaks, there is a problem of adversely affecting the human body.
[0009]
The present invention aims to solve this problem.
That is, the present invention provides an image display medium having a high electrical insulation property that prevents the occurrence of a fire, prevents a bad influence on the human body, and allows the dispersed particles to migrate well by an external electric field. An object of the present invention is to provide an image display device having
