本発明は画像処理システム及びその制御方法に関し、特に画像読取装置で読み取った画像データをホストコンピュータに転送する画像処理システム及びその制御方法に関する。

図4に、従来の画像読取装置の構成例を示す。同図において、108は画像読取装置、105はホストコンピュータ(以下、PC)、107は画像読み取り装置108で読み取った画像を表示するディスプレイである。

しかしながら、上述した図5に示す構成においては、画像読取装置108内にRAMを3個備える必要があり、コストアップの要因となるという問題がある。また、安価なASICを用いた場合、読取装置108内にマトリックス機能を備えなくなる場合がある。

一方、上述した図6に示す構成においては、画像読取装置108に搭載すべきRAMは1個で良いため、図5に示す構成と比べてコストを低く抑えることができる。しかしながら該構成においては、以下に説明する階調飛びの問題が発生する。

上記目的を達成するための一手段として、本発明の画像処理システムは以下の構成を備える。

原稿画像を読み取る画像読取装置と、読み取られた該原稿画像のデータを処理するコンピュータとが接続可能な画像処理システムであって、前記画像読取装置は、原稿画像を読み取って画像データを生成する読取り手段と、前記画像データに対して1より小さいガンマ係数を用いたガンマ補正を行い、該画像データより低いビット数の画像データに階調変換する第1の変換手段と、前記第1の変換手段によって階調変換された画像データを前記コンピュータに転送する転送手段とを備え、前記コンピュータは、前記画像読取装置から転送された画像データに対して前記第1の変換手段におけるガンマ係数の逆数を用いたガンマ補正を行い、該転送された画像データより高いビット数の画像データに階調変換する第2の変換手段と、前記第2の変換手段によって階調変換された画像データに対して、該変換された画像データより低いビット数の画像データに階調変換するとともに、前記第1の変換手段において用いるガンマ係数と同じガンマ係数を用いてガンマ補正を施すガンマ補正手段とを備えることを特徴とする。

以下、本発明に係る一実施形態について、図面を参照して詳細に説明する。

図1は、本実施形態に係る画像処理システムの構成を示すブロック図である。
同図において、30は画像読取装置、38はホストとなるPC、39は画像読取装置30で読み取った画像を表示するディスプレイである。

以上のように、本実施形態において画像読取装置30で読み取られた画像信号は8ビット階調でPC38に転送されるが、その後、LUT33bで再び16ビット階調に変換される。これは、PC38に転送された画像信号は、LUT33cでディスプレイ39に合わせたガンマ補正を行うことによって、最終的に8ビット信号に変換されるが、この際に、上述した従来例で示したような8ビット→8ビット変換による階調落ちの発生が回避できるように、16ビットに変換して16ビット→8ビット変換を行うためである。

従来例でも説明したように、PC38においてはそのオペレーションシステム(OS)によって、標準とするガンマ値が変化する。代表的な例として、Windowsの場合はγ=2.2が、Macintoshの場合はγ=1.8が標準となる。またユーザも、スキャンする原稿画像に応じてハイライト値やシャドウ値を調整する等、LUT33cで用いるガンマカーブの調節を行うため、本実施形態におけるガンマAを固定値とすることは適当でない。従って本実施形態では、LUT33cにおいてユーザ調整後のガンマ値をA1とした時、LUT33aで用いるガンマ値をA1に、LUT33bでリニアに戻す際のガンマ値を1/A1に設定する。これにより、ユーザの所望するレベル域において、階調の再現性を高めることができる。

以上説明したように本実施形態によれば、階調変換及びガンマ補正用のLUTを、画像読取装置30側に1つ、PC38側に2つ備え、それらのガンマ値を適切に設定することによって、画像読取装置30からPC38への転送ビット幅は8ビットのままで、ダーク部における階調落ちの発生を抑制することが可能になる。また、画像読取装置30側において必要とするRAMは2個で済むため、コストを抑えることができる。また、ユーザ調整に応じた階調再現性を得ることができる。

前記画像読取装置は、
原稿画像を読み取って画像データを生成する読取り手段と、
前記画像データに対して1より小さいガンマ係数を用いたガンマ補正を行い、該画像データより低いビット数の画像データに階調変換する第1の変換手段と、
前記第1の変換手段によって階調変換された画像データを前記コンピュータに転送する転送手段とを備え、
前記コンピュータは、
前記画像読取装置から転送された画像データに対して前記第1の変換手段におけるガンマ係数の逆数を用いたガンマ補正を行い、該転送された画像データより高いビット数の画像データに階調変換する第2の変換手段と、
前記第2の変換手段によって階調変換された画像データに対して、該変換された画像データより低いビット数の画像データに階調変換するとともに、ガンマ補正を施すガンマ補正手段とを備え、
