BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a plasma display device that displays an image by controlling discharge.

[0005]
FIG. 8 and FIG. 9 show a timetable configuration diagram and a standard form of driving waveforms in one field related to driving of the plasma display device. As shown in FIG. 8, for example, when one field is composed of eight subfields SF1 to SF8, the subfields SF1 to SF8 are processed in order, and all the processes are performed within a period of one field.
[0006]
A standard form of the drive waveform will be described with reference to FIG. In the standard form of the drive waveform, one field is composed of a plurality of subfields, for example, eight subfields, and each of these subfields is composed of a write period, a light emission sustain period, and an erase initialization period. It consists of a plurality of subfields following an initializing period.
[0007]
Next, processing in each subfield will be described. In the writing period, the
[0008]
As described above, the writing period is a period for selecting a discharge cell that emits light, and the light emission sustain period is a period in which the sustain light emission is performed a number of times according to the weighting of each subfield. That is, the subfields SF1 to SF8 shown in FIG. 8 are weighted by, for example, “1”, “2”, “4”, “8”, “16”, “32”, “64”, and “128”, respectively. In this case, the luminance level in each discharge cell can be adjusted in 256 steps from 0 to 255.
[0009]
Here, a bright image can be obtained even if the light emission sustain pulse obtained from the video signal is used as it is on a screen with a bright overall brightness, but a light emission maintenance obtained from the video signal is obtained on a screen with a dark overall brightness. If the pulse is used as it is, the screen will be very dark and the image will be poor. When the human eye structure is bright, the pupil becomes smaller and the amount of light entering is reduced. However, when it gets darker, the pupil becomes larger continuously and tries to capture more light. In order to obtain the same effect, it is known how to increase the light emission sustain pulse at the same rate on the entire screen when the entire screen becomes dark, brighten the entire screen, and obtain a firm image expression while maintaining a dark atmosphere. It has been. In this regard, the brightness of the entire screen is gradually changed from bright to dark, and is divided into a plurality of stages, for example, “bright”, “slightly bright”, and “dark”. The number is the same as the 1 × mode. In the case of “slightly bright”, the light emission sustain pulse is doubled by 2 × mode (FIG. 8), and in the case of “dark”, the light emission sustain pulse is tripled by 3 × mode ( The numbers in parentheses in FIG. 9 are used.
[0010]
Further, as in
[0011]
FIG. 10 shows the change in the weight of each subfield and the number of sustaining light pulses, and FIG. 11 shows the change in the weight of each subfield in the main multiple mode, the number of sustaining pulses, and the number of data voltage pulses applied to the data electrode in the sustaining period. Indicates a table. As shown in FIG. 10, for example, when the maximum multiple is set to 3, in order to continuously change the brightness, the light emission sustain pulse is changed not only by an integer but also by a multiple including a decimal point. In principle, the number of sustaining pulses is the weight of each subfield multiplied by a multiple, but if the multiple includes a decimal point, the number of sustaining pulses is not an integer value but a value that includes a decimal point. Become. In this case, the value after the decimal point of the number of sustaining light pulses is rounded off or rounded up in addition to rounding as shown in FIG. Therefore, the number of times of light emission maintenance is always an integer value. Further, as shown in FIG. 11, the number of data voltage pulses applied to the
[0012]
In this way, by changing the emission sustain pulse stepwise, and further increasing the number of steps, it is possible to adjust the brightness without making the person watching the screen feel the change in brightness.

[0015]
In view of the above problems, the present invention provides a plasma display device that suppresses an increase in power loss caused by applying a voltage waveform to a data electrode and improves the efficiency of the entire device even when driven in any multiple mode. The purpose is to provide.
[0016]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-described problems, the present invention is configured such that one field is composed of a plurality of subfields having a light emission sustain period, the subfields are weighted, and N times as many drive pulses as the weighting are provided. The output is configured to perform gradation expression by adjusting the number of driving pulses for maintaining light emission in each pixel, and a data voltage waveform is applied to the data electrode in the light emission maintaining period, and the N The present invention is characterized in that the number of application of the data voltage waveform applied during the light emission sustain period is changed according to the value.
[0017]
Further, a pulse voltage waveform is applied to the data electrode during the light emission sustain period. Further, the data driving circuit applies a data voltage waveform synchronized with the voltage waveform applied to the scan electrode or the sustain electrode to the data electrode during the light emission sustain period.
[0018]
With this configuration, when a voltage waveform is applied to the data electrode in the light emission sustain period, when driving in any multiple mode, an increase in power loss due to application of the voltage waveform to the data electrode is suppressed, and in the case of a high multiple mode. It is possible to prevent deterioration in efficiency of the entire apparatus.

As described above, the writing period is a period for selecting a discharge cell that emits light, and the light emission sustain period is a period in which the sustain light emission is performed a number of times according to the weighting of each subfield. That is, as shown in FIG. 2, the weights of the subfields SF1 to SF8 are given as “1”, “2”, “4”, “8”, “16”, “32”, “64” and “128”. In this case, the luminance level in each discharge cell can be adjusted in all 256 steps from 0 to 255.
[0030]
In addition, when the number of sustaining light pulses is a fixed number regardless of the brightness level of the entire screen, the brightness level looks lower and darker when the entire screen is darker than when the entire screen is bright, as shown in FIG. When the number of driving pulses equal to the weight given to each subfield is applied to the

[0033]
Note that the maximum value of the weighting multiple does not necessarily have to be 3 times, and the same effect can be obtained even with values including a decimal point such as 5 times, 10 times, and 6.5 times. Further, the change ratio of the weighting multiple does not need to be equal to 0.125, and the same effect can be obtained even if it is not other values or equal increments. Also, the number of subfields and the weighting value of each subfield need not necessarily be the values shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, and the gray scale is not dependent on the number of subfields, and the combination of sustain light emission in the light emission sustain period of each subfield. The same effect can be obtained as long as the weighting value can express.
[0034]
In addition, when the number of data voltage pulses is decreased with respect to the number of sustain pulses, it is not always necessary to reduce the number of data voltage pulses from the rear. The same effect can be obtained even when the number of applied signals is reduced or when the number of applications is reduced only for a specific SF. In addition, the ratio of the number of data voltage pulses to the number of sustain pulses does not necessarily need to be a constant value, and the same effect can be obtained by determining the number of applications at each ratio for each multiple. Obtainable.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, one field is composed of a plurality of subfields having a light emission sustain period, the subfields are weighted, and N times the weighting drive pulses are output, and each pixel is output. In the light emission sustain period, the data voltage waveform is applied to the data electrode in the light emission sustain period, and the light emission sustain period is determined by the value of N. When the voltage waveform is applied to the data electrode during the light emission sustain period, the voltage waveform is applied to the data electrode even when driving at any multiple N. Suppresses the increase in power loss due to the application of, and prevents deterioration of the efficiency of the entire device in the high multiple mode Rukoto can.
