The present invention relates to a portable computer and a communication system using the same, and more specifically, to be used as a word processor, an e-mail terminal, an information communication terminal, a game machine, a navigation system, a drawing tool, an image / video editing apparatus, and the like. The present invention relates to a portable computer capable of communication and a communication system using the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
As a conventional portable computer, for example, there is one disclosed in "JP-A-6-197178". In this publication, the portable computer includes a telephone function and the like and is called a portable communicator. FIG. 7 is a block diagram showing the configuration of this conventional portable computer.

[0003]
The portable computer is a general-purpose computer that implements various functions by the application software ROM 94. As described above, in order to provide various functions to the user, a method of using a general-purpose computer and software is widely adopted for the following three reasons.
1. Hardware cost reduction due to mass production effect can be expected.
2. Software resources can be diverted and software development costs can be reduced.
3. Software development environment is in place and available at low cost.
In addition, by running application software on a general-purpose computer and realizing various functions, there is also an advantage that less hardware is wasted than purchasing a dedicated machine with the same hardware configuration separately. is there.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As described above, the conventional portable computer can be used for various purposes by operating various application software.
However, a problem with the general-purpose computer is that it is less convenient than a dedicated machine specialized for a specific application.
More specifically, a general-purpose computer implements various functions by switching application software according to user preferences. For this purpose, the general-purpose computer must be designed to be able to execute any application software. This is one condition when designing the hardware of a general-purpose computer. In other words, however, the general-purpose computer does not have the optimum hardware for any application software.
For example, a user may find it difficult to use a game machine or car navigation system that must be operated with a keyboard.
Various functions are optimized in a dedicated machine specialized for a specific application. Taking the display of a dedicated machine as an example, the screen size, display resolution, number of display colors, etc. are optimized for each application.
On the other hand, general-purpose computers also have an optimum screen size, display resolution, and number of display colors for each built-in application software. Some general-purpose computers can change the display resolution and the number of display colors. However, the hardware screen size cannot be changed.
[0005]
By the way, the general-purpose computer is designed so that various external devices can be connected, and application software stored in the external device can be activated and executed. However, if the general-purpose computer and the external device are not linked or linked, the user must make various settings for the external device so that the application software can be started. At this time, the user will feel that the general-purpose computer is unusable.
[0006]
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to improve the usability of a portable computer that can be used for various applications.
[0007]

[0025]
The portable computer executes the above-described built-in software when no external device is connected (step S301). The built-in software is software for providing a user with functions such as a scheduler, personal database, simple word processor, calculator, telephone, and personal computer communication. Particularly in portable computers, it is important to be able to store and manage personal information of users. Personal information is most important for the user. In a portable computer, it can be said that an OS (operating system) and application software (built-in software) are for creating, referring to, or managing personal information. Thus, the user can refer to and use the same personal information wherever he is.

The operation of the portable computer according to this embodiment is basically the same as the processing procedure shown in the first embodiment and FIG. Therefore, below, only a different part from 1st Embodiment is demonstrated.
[0041]
The portable computer executes the processing procedure shown in FIG. In the process, when the user connects an external device to the portable computer, the
[0042]
The difference will be specifically described by taking the home-use game machine shown in FIG. 4B as an example. The
[0043]
In general, the drawing ability required for an application greatly depends on the size, resolution, and number of colors of the display device. For example, in the example of the car navigation device of FIG. 4C, a 6 to 8 inch liquid crystal display is generally used, and the resolution is comparable to that of a portable computer. A drawing coprocessor suitable for such a display device should be installed in the vicinity of the display device. In the example of FIG. 4C, a co-processor is installed in the portable computer body. However, when a display is installed as an external device in the vehicle, the co-processor is mounted on the display. Is preferred.
[0044]
In this way, by installing the co-processor 601 on the external device side, it is not necessary to install a co-processor 601 with high capability in the portable computer, and the weight and power consumption of the portable computer are reduced. be able to. Therefore, the portable computer according to the present embodiment has an effect that portability is increased in addition to the effect described in the first embodiment.
[0045]
In each of the above-described embodiments, the
Other external devices include pointing devices such as joysticks, mice, and trackballs, and touch panel keys. Any of these external devices may be used, but it is desirable to store specific software in an external device optimized for a specific application. For example, the joystick can be configured so that a game cartridge or a game card can be inserted, or English-Japanese / Japanese-English dictionary software is stored in a mouse or trackball, and the meaning of the character string designated by the mouse or trackball is determined. It is to be configured so that it can be searched and translated.
[0046]
Further, when the external device can be used for a plurality of uses such as a keyboard, a plurality of application software is often stored. In that case, a screen for selecting application software to be activated may be first displayed on a display included in the portable computer, and the application software selected by the user may be activated.
