【0001】

【0135】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an electrophoretic display device and a manufacturing method thereof, and more particularly to an electrophoretic display device with improved visibility (contrast) and a manufacturing method thereof.
[0002]
[Prior art]
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, an electrophoretic display device using an electrophoretic phenomenon is known (see Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2001-56653). In general, an electrophoretic display device includes an electrophoretic display panel in which a medium composed of an organic solvent such as benzene, toluene, xylene, or silicone oil, and electrophoretic particles (display particles) having a positive or negative charge are enclosed. It collects the electrophoretic particles on the display surface side of the electrophoretic display panel by applying an electric field to the electrophoretic particles, or displays desired characters and figures by moving away from the display surface side of the electrophoretic display panel. Can be made.
[0003]
Unlike the conventionally known CRT (Cathode Ray Tube), liquid crystal display, and the like, such an electrophoretic display device can maintain display contents for a long time in a non-powered state. Since the panel itself does not require a light source, it has an excellent feature that a feeling of use similar to paper can be obtained. For this reason, the electrophoretic display device is expected to be applied as electronic paper.
[0004]
On the other hand, the electrophoretic display device can change the display contents as appropriate by applying an electric field, unlike a printed matter. Therefore, a conventional paper display (so-called hard copy) and an electronic display typified by a CRT or a liquid crystal display are available. It can be positioned in the middle of (so-called soft copy). Therefore, if desired characters / graphics are displayed on the electrophoretic display device using a dedicated writing device, as printed on paper using a printer, for example, it can be used as electronic newspaper.
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Here, one of the important characteristics required for the electrophoretic display device is a display content retention characteristic. In order to enhance the holding characteristics, it is effective to prevent the movement of display particles in a state where an electric field is not applied to the display layer.
[0006]
However, it is extremely difficult to completely match the specific gravity of the display particles and the specific gravity of the medium. Since there is a difference in specific gravity between the two, there is a problem that the display particles move due to the influence of gravity. . When the display particles move, not only the visibility (contrast) decreases, but also the display content changes in the worst case.
[0007]
Furthermore, if the difference between the specific gravity of the display particles and the specific gravity of the medium is large, there is a problem that the moving speed of the display particles due to the application of an electric field becomes slow.
[0008]
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an electrophoretic display device with improved contrast and a method for manufacturing the same.
[0009]
Another object of the present invention is to provide an electrophoretic display device in which display particles are prevented from moving due to gravity and a method for manufacturing the same.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
An object of the present invention is an electrophoretic display device comprising at least a dispersion solvent and a display layer having a display particle body dispersed in the dispersion solvent, wherein the display particle body has a volume of 20% or more and 90% or less. Is achieved by an electrophoretic display device characterized by being a hollow portion communicating with the outside.
[0011]
According to the present invention, since the display particle body is a hollow part whose volume is 20% or more and 90% or less communicates with the outside, when the display particle body is dispersed in the dispersion solvent, the dispersion solvent can be easily obtained. Invade the hollow part. Thereby, the apparent specific gravity of the display particle body becomes close to that of the dispersion solvent, and the movement of the display particle body due to gravity is suppressed, so that a high contrast can be obtained. Further, the display particle body can be moved at high speed in the dispersion solvent.
[0012]
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the display particle body has a sulfonic acid group.
[0013]
According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, since the
[0014]
In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the display particle body is made of an ion exchange resin.
[0015]
According to a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, since the
[0016]
In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the water content of the display particle body is 0.5 to 5% by weight.
[0017]
According to a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is possible to effectively charge the display particle body, and it is possible to effectively prevent a decrease in moving speed and occurrence of aggregation / adhesion.
[0018]
In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the display layer is provided with two layers, whereby double-sided display is possible.
[0019]
The object of the present invention is to perform a dehydration process on a display particle body in which a volume of 20% or more and 90% or less communicates with the outside, and a moisture content of the display particle body subjected to the dehydration process is set to 0. A step of adjusting to 5 to 5% by weight, a step of forming the display layer by dispersing the display particle body in which the water content is adjusted in a dispersion solvent, and applying the dispersion onto a substrate; And forming a transparent layer on the electrophoretic display device.
[0020]
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, after the display particle body adjusted in water content is dispersed in the dispersion solvent, before the dispersion solvent in which the display particle body is dispersed is applied on the substrate, The method further includes a step of performing degassing under reduced pressure on the dispersion solvent in which the display particles are dispersed.
[0021]
According to a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the insulating properties of the dispersion solvent can be enhanced.
[0022]
In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, after the dispersion solvent in which the display particles are dispersed is applied on the substrate and before the transparent layer is formed on the display layer, the display layer is applied to the display layer. The method further includes a step of performing a vacuum degassing process.
[0023]
According to a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is possible to prevent air bubbles from being mixed into the display layer.
[0024]
The object of the present invention is also to sulfonate the display particle body, which is a hollow part having a volume of 20% or more and 90% or less to the outside, and disperse the sulfonated display particle body in a dispersion solvent. This is achieved by a method of manufacturing an electrophoretic display device comprising a step of forming a display layer by applying this on a substrate and a step of forming a transparent layer on the display layer.
[0025]
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the sulfonating step is performed by mixing the display particle body and the sulfonating agent, and maintaining the temperature within a range of −20 to 250 ° C. for about 0.3 to 100 hours. To do.
[0026]
In a further preferred embodiment of the invention, the sulfonating agent is sulfuric acid.
[0027]

One minute after the completion of the writing, the reflectance of the portion displayed in white and the portion displayed in black on the display surface of the electrophoretic display device is measured with a reflectometer, and the ratio is measured. Was the initial contrast. The reason for 1 minute later was that there was a device that changed greatly immediately after writing, and evaluation was difficult.
[0120]
In addition, the conveyance speed of the electrophoretic display device using the conveyance roll was changed to obtain a conveyance speed at which the contrast was reduced to half of the speed of 10 mm / second, and this was defined as the limit transfer speed. The limit transfer rate correlates with the display switching time. Furthermore, the number of times of repeated writing (conveyance) and the contrast becoming half of the initial contrast was defined as the lifetime. Furthermore, the time during which the electrophoretic display device is held horizontally and the contrast of one of the display surfaces is half of the initial contrast is defined as the self-holding time. The measurement results are shown in Table 1.

On the other hand, in Comparative Example 1 using polystyrene particles having no hollow portion and Comparative Example 2 using polystyrene particles whose hollows are filled with air, immediately after writing (1 In all cases, the initial contrast was low and the self-holding time was short.
