Description

The present invention relates generally to a predictor circuit for a digital receiver operable in a digital communication system. In particular, the present invention relates to a channel predictor circuit and associated method for predicting channel characteristics of a transmission channel that transmits a digital communication signal, including a transmitter and a receiver filter circuit.
Channel predictor circuitry and related methods for channel prediction provide channel prediction with improved quality. Since the quality of channel prediction is improved, the information content of communication signals can be easily reproduced. This circuit and method is effectively utilized in a satellite communication system where the intersymbol interference introduced into the communication signal transmitted between the transmitter and receiver is introduced only by the transmitter and receiver filter circuits. obtain. Further, the circuit and method can be effectively utilized in other communication systems such as digital cellular communication systems.
Background of the Invention
A communication system is formed at the minimum from transmitters and receivers interconnected by channel characteristics. The communication system is operable to transmit at least a communication signal having information content generated or applied at a transmitter on a communication channel. The receiver is operable to receive the transmitted communication signal and to reproduce the information content of the communication signal.
In wireless communication systems, the communication channel consists of one or more frequency bands of the electromagnetic frequency spectrum. A transmitter operable in a wireless communication system generates a communication signal having characteristics that enable transmission over a communication channel, and a receiver operable in a wireless communication system transmits a communication signal transmitted over the communication channel. Is operable to receive A radio receiver typically includes a tuning circuit that can be tuned to a frequency of a communication channel through which a communication signal is transmitted, and a reception signal formed by the communication signal from the transmission frequency as a low-frequency signal or a baseband signal. A down-conversion circuit for down-conversion, and a demodulation and decoder circuit for enabling the information content of the communication signal to be reproduced. A wireless communication system has the advantage that no fixed or hardwired connection is required to form the communication channel spanning between the transmitter and the receiver. Communication between a remotely located transmitter and receiver can occur without forming a hard wire connection or other fixed connection therebetween.
Technical advances in communication technology have made it possible to utilize digital communication technology in communication systems. Have some existing communication systems been modified to take advantage of digital communication technology? As a result of this technological advancement, other communication systems have been planned or made possible. Use of digital communication technology is effective because information can be transmitted more efficiently through a communication channel than using normal analog communication technology. Furthermore, some transmission problems that distort communication signals as they are transmitted by the transmitter to the receiver are often more easily overcome using digital communication techniques.
A transmitter operable in such a communication system digitizes the information signal to form a digital signal. Once digitized, the digital signal can be modulated by a digital modulation technique, such as a Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) modulation technique. Once modulated, a digitized signal is transmitted over the communication channel.
A receiver operable to receive a signal transmitted over a communication channel then demodulates the received signal, if necessary, for example by a decoding process to form a digitized signal that can be converted to another format. Circuit.
Distortion is often introduced into the signal transmitted by the transmitter. This distortion is generated, for example, by a transmitter filter circuit, a receiver filter circuit, or a communication channel. The filter circuit of the transmitter, the communication channel, and the filter circuit of the receiver are sometimes collectively referred to below as the “transmission channel”.
One type of distortion often introduced into signals is called intersymbol interference. The cause of intersymbol interference and the distortion caused by this are well known.
A receiver operable to receive a signal in a digital communication system often includes a circuit called a channel predictor circuit that predicts channel characteristics, ie, the channel impulse response of the transmission channel. Such a channel predictor generates a prediction of the channel impulse response of the transmission channel. The channel impulse response predicted by the channel predictor is used by the receiver equalizer circuit to counteract the intersymbol interference, thereby receiving the information content of the communication signal actually formed at the transmitter. So that the machine can play more accurately.
Since the accurate prediction of the channel impulse response is a determinant of the ability of the receiver equalizer to work against intersymbol interference, the quality of the channel prediction is important and the channel impulse response A high quality channel predictor that can be predicted is needed.
Thus, any method that improves the quality of channel prediction would be beneficial in order to facilitate better playback at the receiver of the transmitted signal.
In view of such background information related to digital communication systems and the channel predictor circuits operable there, a significant improvement of the present invention has been found.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention effectively provides a channel predictor circuit and associated method that provides improved quality channel prediction. When implemented to form part of a digital receiver operable in a digital communication system, the accuracy of predicting the channel characteristics of a transmission channel that transmits a signal to the receiver is improved, thereby transmitting to the receiver. It is easy to accurately reproduce the information content of the received signal.
The circuit and method include: a transmitter for transmitting inter-symbol interference mainly introduced in a communication signal transmitted between an operable transmitter and a receiver; and a receiver for receiving the communication signal. Is effectively utilized to form part of a receiver circuit used in a satellite communication system introduced by a filter circuit. When intersymbol interference is not introduced in the signal transmitted during transmission over the variable communication channel, but rather only introduced in the transmitter and receiver, it needs to be calculated by the channel prediction circuit. Parameter to be reduced, thereby improving the predicted efficiency. The uplink of a satellite communication system is an example of a communication system having a communication channel that introduces little intersymbol interference during its transmission. In such a system, the intersymbol interference introduced into the communication signal is mainly introduced by the filter circuits of the transmitter and the receiver. Since the characteristics of the filter circuit of the fixed device are determinable, i.e., essentially known quantities, the effect of this determinable amount is to improve the quality of the channel prediction and thereby to the signal during transmission to the receiver. This facilitates the next operation in which the equalization circuit corrects the distortion caused by the introduced intersymbol interference.
This circuit and method is further effectively used in communication systems such as cellular communication systems where intersymbol interference is introduced into the communication channel during transmission of communication signals between the transmitter and receiver. By decomposing the distortion introduced into the communication signal into a plurality of distortion components, the components of the distortion generated by the transmitter and receiver filters are also essentially known quantities and can therefore be determined. . To improve the quality of the channel predictor circuit, the possibility of determining the intersymbol interference introduced into the communication signal by the transmitter and receiver circuits is utilized. The circuit and method is further effectively utilized when the distortion component produced simply by the transmitter filter is essentially a known amount.
In one aspect of the invention, the channel predictor predicts a channel impulse response of a transmission channel over which a communication signal having a plurality of synchronization symbols is transmitted by a transmitter. The communication signal is transmitted to the receiver at a communication symbol rate. A symbol sampler is connected to receive a signal indicative of a communication signal received by the receiver. The symbol sampler samples the values of a plurality of synchronization symbols in a signal, such as the portion of the signal corresponding to the synchronization word, at a sampling rate greater than the communication symbol rate. Thereby, each synchronization symbol is sampled at least at the first sampling point and the second sampling point. At least a first sampled signal and a second sampled signal having a value representing a plurality of synchronization symbols sampled at the first and second sampling points are generated. A correlation circuit is connected to receive the sampled signal generated by the symbol sampler. The correlation circuit correlates portions of the sampled signal with stored data words. This stored data word represents the plurality of synchronization symbols modified by a selection level of distortion introduced into the communication signal by the transmitter and receiver, respectively, before transmission and subsequent reception of the communication signal, respectively. It consists of the value that is. In addition, a correlation circuit selects which of the first sampled signal and the second sampled signal correlates most closely with the stored data word, thereby predicting the channel impulse response.
In another aspect of the invention, the channel predictor predicts a channel impulse response of a transmission channel over which a communication signal having a plurality of synchronization symbols is transmitted by a transmitter. The communication signal is transmitted to the receiver at a communication signal symbol rate. A symbol sampler is connected to receive a signal indicative of the communication signal received by the receiver. The symbol sampler samples the values of a plurality of sync symbols, such as portions of the signal corresponding to the sync word of the signal, and generates a sampled signal that displays them. A correlation circuit is connected to receive the sampled signal generated by the symbol sampler. The correlation circuit correlates portions of the sampled signal with stored data words. These memory data words contain the plurality of synchronization symbols modified by a selection level of distortion introduced into the communication signal by the transmitter and the receiver, respectively, before transmission and subsequent reception of the communication signal. Consists of values to be displayed. The distortion level corresponds to a plurality of different sampling points. Further, the correlation circuit selects which of the stored data words best correlates with the stored data word, thereby predicting the channel impulse response.
In view of these and other aspects, a channel predictor and associated method for a digital receiver is disclosed. A symbol sampler is connected to receive a signal representing the communication signal received by the receiver. The communication signal includes a plurality of synchronization symbols, and the symbol sampler samples values of at least a plurality of synchronization symbols of the signal and generates a sampled signal for displaying them. A metric calculation circuit such as a correlator circuit is connected to receive the sampled signal generated by the symbol sampler. The metric calculation circuit calculates a metric for a plurality of portions of the sampled signal using stored data words. In response to a metric calculation performed by the metric calculation circuit, for example, a channel impulse response corresponding to the best metric is predicted.
