Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical transmission structure, an optical transmission method, and an optical fiber used therefor.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventional general optical fibers and optical waveguides are those in which impurities are added to a core or cladding to cause a slight difference in refractive index between them, thereby confining light in the core and propagating. This light confinement utilizes the principle of total reflection of light. On the other hand, in recent years, a photonic crystal fiber (hereinafter referred to as “PCF”) that reduces the effective refractive index of the cladding by forming a large number of pores in the cladding, thereby confining light in the core and propagating it. And a technology for controlling the confinement of light by a new principle called a photonic band gap has been proposed, and a PCF in which the technology is applied to an optical fiber has been developed.
[0003]
FIG. 17 shows an example of a PCF.
[0004]
The PCF 19 includes a
[0005]
By the way, Patent Document 1 discloses a single-mode fiber made of PCF, and the single-mode fiber has a problem of severe scattering that occurs in a multi-mode fiber because the optical signal to be transported moves in only one mode. Has been described as being advantageous over multimode fibers in the areas of long-range communications, laser power delivery, and many sensor applications.
[0006]
Non-Patent Document 1 discloses that the PCF operates in a single mode when the normalized frequency Veff defined by the following equation is 4.1 or less.
[0007]
[Expression 1]
[0008]
In order to reduce Veff to 4.1 or less, the ratio (d / Λ) of the pore diameter (d) to the pore pitch (Λ) is set to a certain value or less corresponding to the wavelength (λ) of the light to propagate. It is also disclosed that what should be done.
[0009]
In Non-Patent Document 2, in order to reduce Veff to 4.1 or less regardless of the wavelength (λ) of the light to be propagated or the core diameter (d), d / Λ should be about 0.45 or less. It has been disclosed that this is generally referred to as Endlessly Single mode.
[0010]
On the other hand, Non-Patent Document 3 discloses that bending loss increases when d / Λ is reduced.

[0012]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, most PCFs with a reduced d / Λ have a very large bending loss and are not suitable for actual use.
[0013]
The present invention has been made in view of the above points, and an object of the present invention is to provide an optical transmission structure, an optical transmission method, and a PCF that operate like a single mode fiber without causing a large bending loss. An object of the present invention is to provide an optical fiber used therefor.
[0014]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
An optical transmission structure according to the present invention that achieves the above object is as follows:
A light source that emits light of a predetermined wavelength;
A PCF that operates in a multimode with respect to the light of the predetermined wavelength;
Fundamental mode supply means for emitting light of a predetermined wavelength from the light source and emitting only the fundamental mode for the PCF of the light of the predetermined wavelength to the PCF;
It is provided with.
[0015]
That is, in the present invention, only the fundamental mode for the PCF of the light of the predetermined wavelength is transmitted to the PCF that operates in the multimode for the light of the predetermined wavelength.
[0016]
According to the above configuration, light in a wavelength band in which the PCF operates in multimode is transmitted, so that a high light confinement effect by the PCF can be obtained. Therefore, a large bending loss does not occur. In addition, since the fundamental mode supply means gives only the fundamental mode to the PCF out of the light of a predetermined wavelength that would normally allow the PCF to perform multimode operation, the PCF operates like a single mode fiber. In PCF, the difference in effective refractive index between the fundamental mode and the higher-order mode is very large, so that light is stably transmitted without mode conversion as in conventional general optical fibers. .
[0017]
Here, the light source may emit only light having a predetermined wavelength, or may emit light including light having a predetermined wavelength.
[0018]
In the optical transmission structure of the present invention, the fundamental mode supply means may be configured by an optical fiber that operates in a single mode with respect to the light having the predetermined wavelength.
[0019]
In the optical transmission structure of the present invention, the fundamental mode supply means may be constituted by a lens that converts light from the light source into parallel light along the fiber axis of the PCF.
[0020]
The optical transmission structure of the present invention can use an optical fiber in which the main body PCF and the end PCF as the basic mode supply means are connected.
[0021]
In the optical fiber of the present invention, a predetermined lattice pattern is formed in the cross section of the fiber by a core extending in the longitudinal direction and a plurality of pores provided so as to cover the core and extending along the core. A main body PCF and an end PCF provided with a clad having a photonic crystal structure formed thereon,
The end PCF may have a smaller ratio (d / Λ) of the pore diameter (d) to the pore pitch (Λ) than the main body PCF.
[0022]
The optical fiber according to the present invention has a predetermined lattice pattern in the cross section of the fiber by a core extending in the longitudinal direction and a plurality of pores extending along the core so as to cover the core. A main body PCF having a clad formed with a photonic crystal structure, and an end PCF having a core and a clad having the same configuration as the main body PCF are connected,
The end PCF may be one in which each of the plurality of pores of the cladding is filled with a filler having a refractive index higher than that of air.
