本発明は複写機、ファクシミリ、プリンタ等の画像形成装置に関し、特に紙面センサを取り外し可能に設ける外装カバーの構造を改良したものに関する。

【従来の技術及び発明が解決しようとする課題】
プリンタ等の画像形成装置で現在使用されている排紙装置では、排紙トレイ上に用紙を所定の高さ以上に排出、積載すると、排紙口が塞がれて用紙が詰まってしまう不具合が生じる。そこで、用紙が所定の高さまで積載されたことを検知する手段が必要となる。図1のプリンタは、プリンタ本体1の上部に形成した排紙口2を覆うカバー3に紙面センサ4を設けてあり、通常、用紙5は排紙口2から排紙部6上へ排出される。紙面センサ4は、排出された用紙5が許容枚数以上にならないようにカバー3に排紙部6上へ突出させて装着してある。

紙面センサ4は、図2に示すように、下面側にセンサ部4aを備えており、これにより排出された用紙5が許容枚数になるとこれを検知してプリントストップとするための信号を送出する。

またこのプリンタは、フィニッシャ7をオプションとして取り付けることができるようになっており、その際、プリンタ本体1の排紙口2からフィニッシャ7へ用紙5を搬送するため、排紙口2とフィニッシャ7の間をつなぐ中継ユニット8を取り付け得るようになっている。図3に、フィニッシャ7及び中継ユニット8を取り付けた状態を示すが、図からも明らかなように、紙面センサ4はあらかじめ取り外す必要がある。

図4に示すように、この種のプリンタでは、プリンタ本体1と紙面センサ4は接続コネクタ9及びハーネス10で接続するのが一般的であるが、フィニッシャ7を装着する場合に紙面センサ4を取り外せばもちろん接続コネクタ9及びハーネス10は無用となり、どこにも接続されずに放置されることになる。ところが、接続コネクタ9やハーネス10を放置しておくと、図5に示すように排紙口2の前側に垂れ下がってしまうため、中継ユニット8を取り付ける場合に邪魔になってしまう。

これを防ぐには、接続コネクタ9及びハーネス10をカバー3から取り外してしまうか、カバー3の内部に収納してしまうかしかない。ところが、前者は取り外し作業が面倒なだけでなく、オプションであるフィニッシャ7及び中継ユニット8を取り外すことになった場合にはカバー3に再度取り付けなければならず、この作業はカバー3の分解等の非常に面倒な作業を伴うことになる。また、接続コネクタ9及びハーネス10を取り外さずに収納するには、本願発明者等の知るところでは具体的に構造的な対策を施したものはなく、むりやりカバー3の外側面や内側面へ接着テープなどで固定する等していた。前者の場合には、見栄えが悪いことはもちろん、中継ユニット8を接続する際には邪魔になり、後者の場合には、接続コネクタ9やハーネス10の固定が不完全なものになりやすく、接続コネクタ9やハーネス10が垂れ下がってきて排紙口2に突出し、用紙5のスムーズな排出を妨げて用紙ジャムを引き起こす原因になりやすいという問題がある。

本発明の画像形成装置のうち請求項1に係るものは、上記目的を達成するために、排出された用紙が排紙口近傍に一定枚数以上溜まったことを検知する紙面センサを備えるとともに、オプションで設置するフィニッシャと上記排紙口との間で用紙を搬送する中継ユニットを取り付けるために、上記紙面センサを画像形成装置本体から取り外し可能としてなる画像形成装置において、上記紙面センサと上記画像形成装置本体とを電気的に接続していたコネクタを上記紙面センサの取り外し後に上記画像形成装置本体内に収納するため、上記画像形成装置本体の上記コネクタの配設位置近傍のカバー部材に切り欠きを設けてなることを特徴とする。

図6は本発明に係る画像形成装置の一実施形態の要部の斜視図である。本実施形態のカバー3には、排紙口2の上部に臨む縁に切り欠き20が設けてあり、紙面センサ4と接続するためのハーネス10がこの切り欠き20から外部へ出るようになっている。そして、フィニッシャ7をオプションとして取り付ける場合には、中継ユニット8を取り付けるにあたってハーネス10をカバー3の内側へ入れ戻し、接続コネクタ9を切り欠き20の内側へ収め、中継ユニット8の取り付けの邪魔にならないようにしてある。
