W. Tang and S. A. VanSlyke, "Organic electroluminescent diodes", Applied Physics Letters, vol. 51, No.12, 913-915 (1987))。
【0006】
F. O'Brien, M. A. Baldo, M. E. Thompson and S. R. Forrest, "Improved energy transfer in electrophosphorescent devices", Applied Physics Letters, vol. 74, No. 3, 442-444 (1999))(文献4:Tetsuo TSUTSUI, Moon-Jae YANG, Masayuki YAHIRO, Kenji NAKAMURA, Teruichi WATANABE, Taishi TSUJI, Yoshinori FUKUDA, Takeo WAKIMOTO and Satoshi MIYAGUCHI, "High Quantum Efficiency in Organic Light-Emitting Devices with Iridium-Complex as a Triplet Emissive Center", Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, Vol. 38, pp. L1502-L1504 (1999))。
【0013】

XV. Copper(II) and Nickel(II) Complexes of Binucleating Ligands Derived From 3-Formyl-salicylic Acid and Diamines", Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn., vol. 49(9), 2469-2473 (1976))。
また、TFTとしてトップゲート型TFT(具体的にはプレーナ型TFT)を例示するが、ボトムゲート型TFT(典型的には逆スタガ型TFT)を用いることもできる。
【0071】
なお、図示しないが、TABテープ605の代わりに、TABテープにIC(集積回路)を設けたTCP(Tape Carrier Package)を接続してもよい。
【0090】
また、TFTとしてトップゲート型TFT(具体的にはプレーナ型TFT)を例示するが、ボトムゲート型TFT(典型的には逆スタガ型TFT)を用いることもできる。
【0096】
なお、図示しないが、TABテープ714の代わりに、TABテープにIC(集積回路)を設けたTCP(Tape Carrier Package)を接続してもよい。
【0103】
プラスチック材としては、ポリイミド、ポリアミド、アクリル樹脂、エポキシ樹脂、PES(ポリエチレンサルファイル)、PC(ポリカーボネート)、PET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート)もしくはPEN(ポリエチレンナフタレート)を板状、もしくはフィルム上にしたものが使用できる。
【0107】

[Field of the Invention]
The present invention relates to an organic light-emitting element having an anode, a cathode, and a layer containing an organic compound that can emit light by applying an electric field (hereinafter referred to as “organic compound layer”). In general, light emission of an organic compound generated by applying an electric field includes light emission when returning from a singlet excited state to a ground state and light emission when returning from a triplet excited state to a ground state. The present invention relates to an organic light-emitting element using an organic compound that can emit light from an excited state. Note that the light emitting device in this specification refers to an image display device or a light emitting device using an organic light emitting element as a light emitting element. In addition, connectors with organic light-emitting elements such as anisotropic conductive film (FPC: Flexible Printed Circuit) or TAB (Tape Automated Bonding) tape or TCP (Tape Carrier Package) attached, printed on the end of TAB tape or TCP It is assumed that the light emitting device includes all modules provided with a wiring board or modules in which an IC (integrated circuit) is directly mounted on an organic light emitting element by a COG (Chip On Glass) method.
[0002]
[Prior art]
An organic light emitting element is an element that emits light when an electric field is applied. The light emission mechanism is such that when a voltage is applied with an organic compound layer sandwiched between electrodes, electrons injected from the cathode and holes injected from the anode recombine in the organic compound layer, and excited molecules (Hereinafter referred to as “molecular excitons”), and when the molecular excitons return to the ground state, they are said to emit energy and emit light.
[0003]
In such an organic light emitting device, the organic compound layer is usually formed as a thin film having a thickness of less than 1 μm. Further, since the organic light emitting element is a self-luminous element in which the organic compound layer itself emits light, a backlight as used in a conventional liquid crystal display is not necessary. Therefore, it is a great advantage that the organic light emitting device can be manufactured to be extremely thin and light.
[0004]
Also, for example, in an organic compound layer of about 100 to 200 nm, the time from carrier injection to recombination is about several tens of nanoseconds considering the carrier mobility of the organic compound layer. Even if the process from light emission to light emission is included, light emission occurs in the order of microseconds or less. Therefore, one of the features is that the response speed is very fast.
[0005]
Furthermore, since the organic light emitting element is a carrier injection type light emitting element, it can be driven with a direct current voltage, and noise hardly occurs. Regarding the driving voltage, first select a uniform ultra-thin film with an organic compound layer thickness of about 100 nm, select an electrode material that reduces the carrier injection barrier for the organic compound layer, and then select a heterostructure (two-layer structure). 100cd / m at 5.5V by introducing 2 (Reference 1: CW Tang and SA Van Slyke, “Organic electroluminescent diodes”, Applied Physics Letters, vol. 51, No. 12, 913-915 (1987)).
[0006]
Due to these thin, lightweight, high-speed response, and direct current low voltage driving characteristics, organic light-emitting devices are attracting attention as next-generation flat panel display devices. Further, since it is a self-luminous type and has a wide viewing angle, the visibility is relatively good, and it is considered effective as an element used for a display screen of a portable device.
[0007]
By the way, as described above, the light emission observed in the organic light emitting device is a light emission phenomenon when the molecular exciton returns to the ground state. However, the type of molecular exciton formed by the organic compound is a singlet excited state. (S * ) And triplet excited states (T * Is possible. In addition, the statistical generation ratio of organic light-emitting elements is S * : T * = 1: 3 (Reference 2: Junji Kido, “Monthly Display Separate Volume Organic EL Display
From basics to the latest information "(Techno Times), p. 28-29).
[0008]
However, common organic compounds are triplet excited states (T * ) Is not observed, and is usually singlet excited (S * Only luminescence from) is observed. The ground state of an organic compound is usually a singlet ground state (S 0 ) Because T * → S 0 Transition (phosphorescence process) is a forbidden transition of intensity, S * → S 0 This is because the transition (fluorescence process) is an allowable transition.

That is, the singlet excited state (S * ) Usually contributes to light emission, and this also applies to organic light-emitting devices. Therefore, the theoretical limit of internal quantum efficiency (ratio of photons generated to injected carriers) in organic light-emitting devices is S * : T * = 25% based on 1: 3.
[0010]
Further, not all of the generated light is emitted to the outside, and part of the light cannot be extracted due to the refractive index inherent to the organic light emitting element constituent material (organic compound layer material, electrode material) or the substrate material. Of the generated light, the rate of extraction to the outside is called light extraction efficiency. In an organic light emitting device having a glass substrate, the extraction efficiency is said to be about 20%.
[0011]
For the above reasons, even if all the injected carriers form molecular excitons, the theoretical limit of the proportion of photons that can be finally extracted outside the number of injected carriers (hereinafter referred to as “external quantum efficiency”) Was said to be 25% x 20% = 5%. That is, even if all the carriers are recombined, only 5% of them can be extracted as light.
[0012]
Recently, however, triplet excited states (T * Organic light-emitting devices that can convert the energy released when returning to the ground state (hereinafter referred to as “triplet excitation energy”) to light emission have been announced one after another, and the high emission efficiency has attracted attention ( Reference 3: DF O'Brien, MA Baldo, ME Thompson and SR Forrest, "Improved energy transfer in electrophosphorescent devices", Applied Physics Letters, vol. 74, No. 3, 442-444 (1999)) (Reference 4: Tetsuo TSUTSUI, Moon-Jae YANG, Masayuki YAHIRO, Kenji NAKAMURA, Teruichi WATANABE, Taishi TSUJI, Yoshinori FUKUDA, Takeo WAKIMOTO and Satoshi MIYAGUCHI, "High Quantum Efficiency in Organic Light-Emitting Devices with Iridium-Complex as a Triplet Emissive Center", Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, Vol. 38, pp. L1502-L1504 (1999)).
[0013]
Reference 3 uses an organometallic complex with platinum as the central metal (hereinafter referred to as “platinum complex”), and
[0014]
As shown in Document 3 and
[0015]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, since both platinum and iridium are so-called noble metals, platinum complexes and iridium complexes using them are also expensive, and it is expected that they will be an adverse effect of cost reduction in the future. Moreover, since it is a rare metal, it is difficult to supply during mass production.
[0016]
In addition, the platinum complex and the iridium complex are organometallic complexes in which the central metal and the benzene ring of the ligand are directly σ-bonded, and the time required for synthesis is long and the yield is low, so the productivity is good. It can not be said. From the viewpoint of productivity, tris (8-quinolinolato) aluminum (hereinafter referred to as “Alq”) often used in organic light emitting devices. Three It is generally considered that a Werner type complex is more effective.
[0017]
Further, the emission color of the iridium complex is green, that is, a wavelength located in the middle in the visible light region. When the platinum complex is used as a dopant, it emits red light with relatively good color purity. However, when the concentration is low, the host material also shines, so the color purity is poor, and when the concentration is high, the light emission efficiency is high due to concentration quenching. There is a drawback of falling. That is, high-efficiency light emission of red or blue with high color purity has not been obtained from an organic light-emitting element that can convert triplet excitation energy into light emission.
[0018]
Therefore, in the future, considering the production of full-color flat panel displays using red, green, and blue light emission colors, red light emission with high external quantum efficiency and high color purity similar to platinum complexes and iridium complexes. And material that exhibits blue emission must be produced in large quantities using cheaper raw materials.
[0019]
From the above, development of triplet light-emitting materials is indispensable in addition to existing organometallic complexes using platinum or iridium.
[0020]
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a triplet light emitting material at a lower cost than in the past. It is another object of the present invention to provide an organic light-emitting element that can be manufactured at a low cost by using the light-emitting efficiency.
[0021]
Furthermore, it is an object to provide a light-emitting device that is bright and has low power consumption and is inexpensive using an organic light-emitting element with high luminous efficiency obtained by carrying out the present invention, and an electric appliance using the light-emitting device. To do.
[0022]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
As a method for converting triplet excitation energy into light emission, the heavy atom effect is well known in the field of photoluminescence. The heavy atom effect means that a heavy atom is introduced into a molecule of a luminescent material or a heavy atom is present in the surrounding environment such as a solvent in which the luminescent material is dissolved, thereby increasing the spin-orbit interaction. Forbidden transition (T * → S 0 This is a phenomenon in which phosphorescence emission is promoted. Here, the heavy atom refers to an atom having a large number of nuclear loads (corresponding to the atomic number, that is, the number of positive charges of the nucleus).
[0023]
Platinum and iridium are heavy atoms that can exhibit a large spin-orbit interaction, and can effectively promote phosphorescence. In that respect, it can be said that the platinum complex and the iridium complex are extremely effective triplet light emitting materials.
[0024]
However, since the effectiveness of the heavy atom effect is determined by the spin-orbit coupling constant that is a value unique to each atom, the atoms used to cause the heavy atom effect are considerably limited. And it can be said that many raw materials containing these heavy atoms are expensive.
[0025]
Therefore, a method of converting triplet excitation energy into light emission without using heavy atoms is desirable. Conceptually, it is sufficient that the transition from the triplet excited state to the ground state is an allowable transition. That is, if the ground state is a triplet state, it is considered that triplet excitation energy can be converted into light emission. For example, if the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) is degenerate, such as an oxygen molecule, the ground state becomes a triplet state.
[0026]
Such a state is not observed in a normal hydrocarbon compound, but it is possible to form a triplet state at the energy level of the central metal of the metal complex. Examples thereof include a binuclear complex (a metal complex having two central metals) having a paramagnetic metal as a central metal.
[0027]
In a binuclear complex having a paramagnetic metal as a central metal, a phenomenon in which unpaired electrons of the paramagnetic metal are coupled in the complex and a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interaction occurs is often observed. In the case of ferromagnetic interactions, these electrons are considered to be in the triplet state. In addition, in the case of antiferromagnetic interaction, it is in a singlet state, but at a certain temperature or higher, it becomes a triplet state (Reference 5: Fundamental Complex Engineering Study Group / biased, “Complex Chemistry Fundamentals and Latest Topics” (Kodansha ), P.48-49).
[0028]
It is considered that triplet state electrons formed in this way contribute to light emission, so that triplet excitation energy can be converted into light emission. Therefore, the present inventor has focused on applying the binuclear complex as a light emitting material of an organic light emitting device.
[0029]
In addition, the present inventor believes that, particularly when a plurality of central metals come close to each other to form a cluster state, the total nuclear load is further increased, which may cause an effect substantially equivalent to the heavy atom effect. . This is also the reason for focusing on the binuclear complex.
[0030]
Furthermore, when a binuclear complex is used, the excitation energy state changes by changing the combination of the central metals, so it is considered that the emission color can be changed to some extent. That is, there is a merit that the emission color can be tuned without changing the ligand.
[0031]
From such a background, in the present invention, a binuclear complex having a light-emitting ligand is used for an organic light-emitting device. In the present invention, a Werner type complex is used because of its simplicity in synthesis and good productivity, but it is better to use an organometallic complex in which the central metal and the ligand carbon atom are directly bonded. Is thought to improve. This is noticeable in the iridium complex.
[0032]
The binuclear complex used in the present invention can be represented by the following general formulas (1) to (4).

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
First, a method for synthesizing the binuclear complex disclosed in the present invention will be described. Methods for synthesizing this family of binuclear complexes have been established (Reference 6: Mitsunori TANAKA, Michiyo KITAOKA, Hisashi OKAWA, and Sigeo KIDA, "Binuclear Metal Complexes. XV. Copper (II) and Nickel (II) Complexes of Binucleating Ligands. Derived From 3-Formyl-salicylic Acid and Diamines ", Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn., Vol. 49 (9), 2469-2473 (1976)). In Reference 6, 3-formylsalicylic acid and diamine are reacted to form a ligand of a binuclear complex, and a central metal raw material is allowed to act on the ligand to synthesize the binuclear complex.
[0042]
The above method may be applied also when synthesizing the binuclear complex of the present invention. For example, in the case of the general formula (2), a ligand of the general formula (2) can be obtained by reacting a 3-formylsalicylic acid derivative with a 1,2-cyclohexanediamine derivative. A more generalized version of the general formula (2) is the general formula (1), which can be synthesized by the same reaction.
[0043]
Moreover, if it is General formula (4), the ligand of General formula (4) will be obtained by making a 3-formyl salicylic acid derivative and a 1, 2- phenylenediamine derivative react. The general formula (3) is a generalization of the general formula (4), but can be synthesized by the same reaction.
[0044]
Next, in the general formulas (1) to (4), description about introduction of a central metal and a substituent will be described.
[0045]
By using a cyclohexylene group or a phenylene group, the ligand of the binuclear complex disclosed in the present invention can strengthen the tendency to coordinate in a planar manner. In particular, in the case of having a cyclohexylene group (general formulas (1) and (2)), the tendency of planar coordination can be enhanced by using a cis-type 1,2-cyclohexanediamine derivative as a raw material.
[0046]
Therefore, for example, even if a metal that is easily tetrahedrally coordinated, such as zinc, is selected as the central metal, it can be coordinated in a planar shape. That is, M1 and M2 can be coordinated as long as they are divalent metal ions. However, M1 and M2 are preferably metal ions having a strong planar coordination tendency, and Group 9 to Group 11 elements such as cobalt, nickel, and copper are suitable.
[0047]
M1 and M2 are divalent oxo metal ions (MO 2+ ) Is also possible. In this case, the molecular structure is such that the oxygen atom of the oxo metal ion protrudes from the plane formed by the ligand. As elements suitable for the formation of oxo metal ions,
[0048]
Note that the organic compound disclosed in the present invention is poor in solubility in various organic solvents in the case of an unsubstituted compound. Therefore, in consideration of film formation by a wet method such as spin coating or purification by a recrystallization method, an alkyl group or an alkoxyl group may be introduced in order to improve molecular solubility. An aryl group may be introduced for the purpose of shifting the emission wavelength to the longer wavelength side.
[0049]
Below, the form at the time of producing an organic light emitting element is described. When the organic compound disclosed in the present invention is used as a light-emitting material of an organic light-emitting device, it can be roughly divided into two categories. One is the usage as a light emitting layer as represented by FIG. The other is the usage as a dopant, as typified by FIG.
[0050]
In FIG. 1A, the organic compound disclosed in the present invention is used as an electron-transporting light-emitting layer (single heterostructure), but is provided as a light-emitting layer between a hole-transporting layer and an electron-transporting layer. Good (double heterostructure). In FIG. 1B, the organic compound disclosed in the present invention is doped in the electron transport layer, but may be doped in the hole transport layer. Further, although the anode is provided on the substrate in FIG. 1, a structure in which the cathode is provided on the substrate may be employed.
[0051]
Here, in the organic compounds represented by the general formulas (1) and (2), the cyclohexane site is non-planar, but as described above, the coordination portion of the ligand to the central metal is planar. It is. In addition, the organic compounds represented by the general formulas (3) and (4) are planar throughout. Therefore, the organic compound disclosed in the present invention has a highly planar molecular structure as a whole.
[0052]
Thus, when the planarity of the molecule is high, the intermolecular interaction is strong, and when the film is formed as a single layer, there is a high possibility that the light emission characteristic is deteriorated by concentration quenching. Therefore, the usage as the dopant as shown in FIG. 1B is more preferable than the usage as the light emitting layer as shown in FIG.

[Example 9]
In this embodiment, an example of a light emitting device in which an organic light emitting element is driven by digital time gradation display is shown. The light emitting device of this embodiment can obtain a uniform image by digital time gradation display and is very useful.

FIG. 11A shows a circuit configuration of a pixel using an organic light emitting element. Tr represents a transistor, and Cs represents a storage capacitor. In this circuit, when a gate line is selected, a current flows from the source line to Tr1, and a voltage corresponding to the signal is accumulated in Cs. And the voltage between the gate and source of Tr2 (V gs The current controlled by) flows in Tr2 and the organic light emitting element.

After Tr1 is selected, Tr1 is turned off and the Cs voltage (V gs ) Is held. Therefore, V gs It is possible to continue the current as much as depending on the current.

In FIG. 11B, a 6-bit gradation is used to divide one frame into six subframes. In this case, the ratio of each sub-frame light emission period is 32: 16: 8: 4: 2: 1.
[0128]
FIG. 11C shows an outline of the TFT substrate driving circuit in this embodiment. The gate driver and the source driver are provided on the same substrate. In this embodiment, since the pixel circuit and the driver are designed to be digitally driven, a uniform image can be obtained without being affected by variations in TFT characteristics.
[0129]
[Example 10]
The light-emitting device of the present invention described in the above embodiment has an advantage of low power consumption and low cost. Therefore, an electric appliance in which the light-emitting device is included as a display unit or the like can operate with lower power consumption than before and can be provided at low cost. In particular, an electric appliance such as a portable device that uses a battery as a power source is extremely useful because low power consumption is directly linked to convenience (battery is unlikely to run out).
[0130]
Further, since the light-emitting device is a self-luminous type, a backlight like a liquid crystal display device is not necessary, and the thickness of the organic compound layer is less than 1 μm, so that it can be thin and light. Therefore, an electric appliance in which the light emitting device is included as a display unit or the like is an electric appliance that is thinner and lighter than conventional ones. This is also extremely useful because it is directly connected to convenience (lightness and compactness when carrying), especially with respect to electric appliances such as portable devices. Furthermore, there is no doubt that the thinness (not bulky) of electrical appliances in general is also useful from the viewpoint of transportation (capable of mass transportation) and installation (serving space such as rooms).
[0131]
Note that since the light-emitting device is a self-luminous type, the light-emitting device is superior in visibility in a bright place as compared with a liquid crystal display device and has a wide viewing angle. Therefore, an electric appliance having the light-emitting device as a display portion has a great merit in terms of easy viewing.
[0132]
That is, the electric appliance using the light emitting device of the present invention is extremely useful because it has the advantages of low power consumption and low cost in addition to the advantages of the conventional organic light emitting element such as thin and light weight and high visibility.
[0133]
In this embodiment, an electric appliance including the light emitting device of the present invention as a display portion is illustrated. Specific examples thereof are shown in FIGS. In addition, any of the elements disclosed in the present invention may be used as the organic light-emitting element included in the electric appliance of this example. Moreover, any form of FIGS. 3-11 may be used for the form of the light-emitting device contained in the electric appliance of a present Example.

In addition, the electric appliances often display information distributed through an electronic communication line such as the Internet or wireless communication such as radio waves, and in particular, opportunities for displaying moving image information are increasing. The response speed of the organic light emitting device is very fast, and it is suitable for such moving image display.

[0143]
In addition, in the electric appliances as shown in FIGS. 12 to 13, a light sensor is further incorporated, and means for detecting the brightness of the usage environment is provided to modulate the light emission luminance according to the brightness of the usage environment. It is effective to have such a function. The user can recognize the image or the character information without any problem if the brightness of 100 to 150 can be secured in the contrast ratio as compared with the brightness of the usage environment. That is, when the usage environment is bright, it is possible to increase the brightness of the image for easy viewing, and when the usage environment is dark, the brightness of the image can be suppressed to reduce power consumption.
[0144]
Various electric appliances using the light-emitting device of the present invention as a light source can be said to be very useful because they can operate with low power consumption and can be thin and light. Typically, an electrical appliance including the light-emitting device of the present invention as a light source such as a backlight or a front light of a liquid crystal display device or a light source of a lighting device can achieve low power consumption and be thin and lightweight.
[0145]
Therefore, even when the display units of the electric appliances of FIGS. 12 to 13 shown in this embodiment are all liquid crystal displays, the electric appliances using the light emitting device of the present invention as the backlight or front light of the liquid crystal display. By producing a thin, lightweight electric appliance with low power consumption can be achieved.
[0146]
【The invention's effect】
By implementing the present invention, it is possible to obtain an inexpensive light-emitting device with low power consumption. Further, by using such a light-emitting device for a light source or a display portion, it is possible to obtain an inexpensive electric appliance while being bright and consuming little power.
