【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a light emitting display device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
An electroluminescence (EL) element has attracted attention as a low-power consumption, wide viewing angle, high-speed response, thin, lightweight display element. In particular, an organic EL element using an organic thin film as a light emitting layer (also referred to as an organic LED) can emit red, green, and blue light emission colors, and thus can perform full color display.
[0003]
In general, an organic EL element has a transparent electrode made of ITO (Indium tin oxide), a reflective electrode made of a metal having a low work function, and an organic thin film (light emitting material layer) sandwiched therebetween. The transparent electrode is an electrode that transmits visible light, and the reflective electrode is an electrode that reflects visible light like a mirror. In the organic EL element, the transparent electrode is used as one electrode in order to extract emitted light. In addition, the reason why the reflective electrode is used for the other electrode is to reflect the light emitted from the opposite side of the transparent electrode by the reflective electrode and extract it from the transmissive electrode side. Can be increased. When a metal having a low work function such as aluminum is formed, a reflective electrode can be easily obtained due to the gloss of the metal.
[0004]
However, when a reflective electrode is used, external light such as sunlight or room illumination is reflected by the reflective electrode. As a result, when used in a bright place, the black display is not sufficiently dark, and the contrast is lowered.
[0005]
In order to solve this problem, there is a configuration in which a quarter-wave plate and a polarizing plate are laminated on the surface of the organic EL element on the transmission electrode side (see, for example, Patent Document 1). As described above, when a circularly polarizing filter is constituted by the quarter-wave plate and the polarizing plate, the incoming external light is absorbed by the polarizing plate when entering and exiting. Therefore, reflection of external light is prevented and black display can be made darker. However, in this configuration, one circularly polarized component of the light emitted from the light emitting layer is absorbed by the polarizing plate, and the brightness during white display is about 50% compared to the case where no circularly polarizing filter is used. There was a problem that it decreased.
[0006]
In order to solve this problem, there is a configuration in which a cholesteric liquid crystal film obtained by polymerizing cholesteric liquid crystal is inserted between the organic EL element and a quarter-wave plate in the configuration having the organic EL element and the circular polarizing filter described above. (For example, refer to Patent Document 2). The selective reflection wavelength of the cholesteric liquid crystal film is approximately the same as the wavelength of light emitted from the light emitting layer and the wavelength of light (external light) incident on the organic EL element from the outside. In this case, the light emitted from the light emitting layer is incident on the cholesteric liquid crystal film directly or after being reflected by the reflective electrode. Of the incident light, one circularly polarized light component is transmitted through the cholesteric liquid crystal film. The other circularly polarized light component is selectively reflected by the cholesteric liquid crystal film, but when it is reflected by the reflective electrode, it becomes the above-mentioned one circularly polarized light and passes through the cholesteric liquid crystal film. These lights pass through the quarter wavelength plate, become linearly polarized light parallel to the transmission axis of the polarizing plate, and pass through the polarizing plate. Thereby, in the structure of patent document 1, the light absorbed by the polarizing plate can be transmitted.
[0007]
However, when a cholesteric liquid crystal film is inserted, a part of external light is transmitted through the polarizing plate due to the reflection of the reflective electrode and the cholesteric liquid crystal film, and then comes out. Therefore, reflection of external light cannot be prevented.

[Patent Document 2]

[0009]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
To summarize the above, white is bright but only black is not dark with the organic EL element alone. When a polarizing plate and a quarter wavelength plate are attached to the organic EL element, black becomes dark but white is sacrificed. When a polarizing plate, a quarter wavelength plate, and a cholesteric liquid crystal film are pasted on an organic EL element, white is bright but black is not dark. That is, conventionally, it was impossible to obtain bright white and dark black at the same time.

[0020]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, a light-emitting display device according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. First, a basic configuration of the light emitting display device according to the present embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2.

In the present embodiment, two modes of black priority / white priority can be selected by selecting application / non-application of voltage to the cholesteric
[0033]
In order to switch between the white priority mode and the black priority mode according to the use environment, the organic EL element has a structure in which a cholesteric liquid crystal film, a quarter wavelength plate, and a polarizing plate are laminated, and the quarter wavelength plate and the polarizing plate. It is also possible to do this by stretching or peeling. That is, the polarizing plate and the quarter wave plate are attached in a bright place such as outdoors, and the polarizing plate and the quarter wave plate are peeled off in a dark place such as indoors. However, especially when forming a large screen, it is cumbersome to stick or peel off, and the adhesive strength deteriorates after repeated sticking and peeling, and dust is generated between the cholesteric liquid crystal film and the quarter-wave plate. When sandwiched, there is a problem that the display becomes uneven. Further, in the process of repeating the pasting and peeling, the laminated film of the polarizing plate and the quarter wavelength plate is stretched and contracted, and optical deterioration may occur.
[0034]
According to the present embodiment, it is possible to provide a light-emitting display device having excellent contrast characteristics and display luminance characteristics depending on the usage environment depending on whether or not voltage is applied without causing such a problem. .

In the present embodiment, the surfaces of the

The range (band width) of the selective reflection wavelength is a value obtained by multiplying the refractive index anisotropy Δn of the cholesteric liquid crystal and the helical pitch. In order to obtain a display with high color purity, it is preferable to narrow the wavelength range of selective reflection of the cholesteric
[0041]
Such a cholesteric liquid crystal can be produced by mixing a nematic liquid crystal (E series, ZLI series, etc. manufactured by Merck) with a chiral agent (CB-15, S811, etc. manufactured by Merck).
[0042]
In the present embodiment, a voltage independent of image information can be applied to the cholesteric
[0043]
Using this characteristic, an applied voltage control means (not shown) is provided, and the applied voltage can be switched depending on the usage environment of the light emitting display device, the image information to be displayed, or the user's preference. Can change
Further, by using this characteristic, the selective reflection wavelength can be changed according to the emission color of the organic EL element. For example, in the case of an organic EL element having three types of pixels of red, green, and blue, the spiral pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer is adjusted so as to selectively reflect light having a blue wavelength when no voltage is applied. No voltage is applied to the cholesteric liquid crystal layer at the position corresponding to the blue pixel, and the cholesteric liquid crystal layer at the position corresponding to the red and green pixels is appropriately selected so that the selective reflection wavelengths are red and green, respectively. Apply an appropriate voltage. Thereby, the spiral pitch suitable for the luminescent color of a pixel can be obtained easily.
[0044]
In addition, as described above, the selective reflection wavelength of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer is not controlled by the magnitude of the applied voltage, but the selective reflection wavelength is controlled by changing the material of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer itself (for example, the amount of chiral component added). May be.
[0045]
Further, a polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal may be used as the cholesteric

When the polymer-dispersed cholesteric
[0047]
It should be noted that an electric field is applied to a cholesteric polymer liquid crystal in which a cholesteric liquid crystal group is added to a side chain or main chain (a side chain type or main chain polymer liquid crystal exhibiting a cholesteric phase) instead of a polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal. However, the homeotropic alignment is not achieved, or the voltage required for the homeotropic alignment is very high, which causes a problem in practical use. On the other hand, polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals can be homeotropically aligned by applying several to several tens of volts, so that voltage supply is possible even when used in portable devices such as mobile phones and laptop computers. It doesn't matter.
[0048]
Further, when producing a polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal, the helical pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal can be changed by changing the polymerization conditions of the polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal precursor according to the emission color of the pixel. For example, by changing the blending ratio of the cholesteric liquid crystal and the matrix and the polymerization time, a helical pitch that matches the emission color of the pixel can be easily obtained.
[0049]
In the present embodiment, the polarizing plate 1 may be an iodine-based polarizing plate using iodine as a material that absorbs polarized light (eg, SEG series manufactured by Nitto Denko Corporation). Further, as the

A mask having an opening portion was placed only on the portion to be a red pixel in the cell into which the polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal precursor was injected, and ultraviolet light at 365 nm was irradiated for 1 minute. Thereafter, a mask having an opening was placed only on the portion to be a green pixel in the cell, and irradiation with 365 nm ultraviolet light was performed for 1 minute. Thereafter, the entire surface of the cell was irradiated with 365 nm ultraviolet light for another 3 minutes. This changed the ratio of the acrylic polymer matrix (medium) and the liquid crystal in each of the red, green, and blue pixels. The red pixel and the green pixel have the same ultraviolet light irradiation time, but by irradiating the red pixel first, the volume ratio of the acrylic polymer of the red pixel is made larger than that of the green pixel. As a result, the spiral pitch of the polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal changes in each of the red, green, and blue pixels, and the selective reflection wavelength of the cholesteric liquid crystal includes the wavelength of each corresponding emission color.
