BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field of measuring characteristics such as an amplitude spectrum and a phase spectrum of an optical device using a low-coherence optical interferometer.
[0002]
[Prior art]
FIG. 1 shows a conventional optical device evaluation apparatus using low-coherence optical interference, in which 1 is a 1.5 μm band LED light source, 2 is a first optical fiber coupler, 3 is an optical fiber, and 4 is for measurement. It is an arrayed waveguide type diffraction grating which is an optical device. An

[Expression 2]
It is represented by Here, c and ψ are constants, G (ν) is an emission light spectrum of a light source with an optical frequency ν, A (ν) is an amplitude spectrum of an optical device for measurement, and φ (ν) is a phase spectrum. The transmission spectrum of the optical device is given by A (ν) 2 .
[0004]
The Fourier transform of the interferogram I (r) (τ) is given by the following equation for ν> 0.
[0005]
[Equation 3]
Since c and G (ν) in the formula (2) are fixed, the complex amplitude spectrum A (ν) expiφ (ν) of the optical device for measurement is obtained by Fourier transform of I (r) (τ). be able to. From the amplitude spectrum, the transmission spectrum of the optical device can be obtained, and the dispersion can be obtained by differentiating the phase spectrum twice with respect to the frequency ν. When the optical device is an arrayed waveguide type diffraction grating, a phase error that is a deviation from the design value of the optical length of the arrayed waveguide is derived from the interferogram I (r) (τ). You can also.
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the conventional interferometer as described above, the output light from the light source is bisected by the first optical coupler and then combined and interfered by the second optical coupler. The polarization state of the reference light from the delay circuit generally differs depending on the state of the optical fiber used in the interferometer, and the value of the interference beat signal may be very small. Therefore, before measuring the interferogram, it is necessary to finely adjust the
[0007]
An object of the present invention is to obtain an amplitude spectrum and a phase spectrum of an optical device without performing adjustment by a polarization controller for making the polarization states of reference light and signal light coincide with each other.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In the present invention, in order to achieve the above object, a polarization rotation device and a polarizer capable of rotating the polarization state by 0 ° and 90 ° are installed on either the signal light side or the reference light side. In this apparatus, an unpolarized light source is used as a light source, and respective interferograms are obtained when the polarization rotation angle is set to 0 ° and 90 °. From the square root of the sum of squares of these interferograms, an amplitude spectrum having the same intensity as that obtained when the polarization states are matched is obtained. Further, the phase spectrum is obtained by performing Fourier transform on the larger signal level of these interferograms.
[0009]
According to the present invention, it is possible to obtain the amplitude spectrum and phase spectrum of the measurement optical device without adjusting the polarization state by the polarization controller.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
FIG. 2 is a diagram showing a first embodiment of the present invention, in which the
[0011]
This measurement principle will be described below. If the photoelectric field vector at the optical frequency ν immediately before the light emitted from the

It becomes. Further, the electric field vector of the reference light arriving at the optical coupler 11 is
[0013]
[Equation 5]
It is expressed. Here, g s and g r are constants, and τ 1 and τ 2 are times required for signal light and reference light to propagate through the interferometer, respectively. h (ν) is a transfer function of the measuring device, and is given by h (ν) = A (ν) expiφ (ν) by the amplitude spectrum A (ν) and the phase spectrum φ (ν). The matrices R and P in the equation (3) represent the effects of the 90 ° Faraday rotator and the polarizer, respectively, and are represented by the following matrix.
[0014]
[Formula 6]
For the Faraday rotation of 0 ° and 90 °, the electric field vectors of the combined light when the signal light and the reference light are combined by the second optical coupler 11 are respectively E 0 (ν) = { e 0 (ν) − i e r (ν)} / √2 and E 90 (ν) = {e 90 (ν) is represented by the -i e r (ν)} / √2. Since the light intensity is proportional to the square of the intensity of the electromagnetic field, respectively | E 0 (ν) | 2 α | {e 0 (ν) -i e r (ν)} / √2 | 2 = [| e 0 (ν) | 2 + | e r (ν) | 2 + 2i (e 0 (ν), e r (ν)) + c. c. ] / 2 and | E 90 (ν) | 2 α | {e 90 (ν) -i e r (ν)} / √2 | 2 = [| e 90 (ν) | 2 + | e r (ν) | 2 + 2i (. e 90 (ν), e r (ν) + c.c)] is / 2. Where c. c. Represents a conjugated complex number. Each interference component in the light intensity is

Represented by the real part of. Here, <> represents a statistical average, and () represents an inner product of complex vectors. Since equation (6) corresponds to an interference fringe for a specific optical frequency ν, the interferogram generated when τ 2 is continuously increased by an optical delay circuit is obtained by integrating equation (6) with ν. Is given in the real part of the value. Substituting equations (3) and (4) into equation (6),

Is still a unitary matrix. Here, † represents an operation for transposing the complex conjugate of the matrix components. Since emitted from the light source is completely unpolarized, mutually perpendicular two components of e (ν) e 0 (ν ), is represented by e 1 (ν), between e 0 (ν) and e 1 (ν) Since there is no correlation, <e k (ν) e l (ν) * > = 0 (k ≠ l, k, l = 0,1) is obtained. In addition, since the optical power in two directions perpendicular to the traveling direction of light is equal, the condition <e k (ν) e k (ν) * > = <e l (ν) e l (ν) * > is also imposed. The In order to satisfy these conditions, <e k (ν) e l (ν) * > = δ kl <| e (ν) | 2 > / 2,
[0018]
[Expression 10]
Is converted. Here, G (ν) = <| e (ν) | 2 > represents the light spectrum emitted from the light source, and Tr () represents the sum of the diagonal components of the matrix. In general, U 1 and U 4 which are unitary matrices can be expressed as follows.
[0019]
[Expression 11]
Here, the elements a, b, c, and d are generally complex numbers and satisfy | a | 2 + | b | 2 = 1, | c | 2 + | d | 2 = 1, but the lateral pressure on the optical fiber is satisfied. It is difficult to determine these values in advance because they change due to or bending. By substituting (5) and (9) into (8), the following equation is obtained.
[0020]
[Expression 12]
Since τ continuously increases in the optical delay circuit, the interferogram generated at this time is obtained by integrating the expression (10) with respect to ν.
[Formula 13]
Given by the real part of In other words,
[0022]
[Expression 14]
It is. Here, ψ 0 and ψ 90 are the phases of c 0 and c 90 , respectively. Similar to equation (2), I 0 (τ) and I 90 (τ) are Fourier transformed at ν> 0,
[0023]
[Expression 15]
It becomes. Here, if the condition | a | 2 + | b | 2 = 1, | c | 2 + | d | 2 = 1 is considered, | c 0 | 2 + | c 90 | 2 = | g s g r | since the 2/16, from (13),
[0024]
[Expression 16]
And A (ν) can be obtained because it does not depend on the elements a, b, c, and d. Also, based on the above conditions, the value obtained by synthesizing the amplitude of each interferogram is
[0025]
[Expression 17]
And no longer depends on the elements a, b, c and d. Here, I (r) (τ) corresponds to an interferogram observed when adjustment is made so that the signal level of the interference fringe is maximized by matching the polarization states of the signal light and the reference light. Therefore, | I 0 (τ) | 2 or | I 90 (τ) | 2 of at least one of, | I (τ) | would take 2/2 or more values, the result, | I 0 (tau ) | Or | I 90 (τ) | is at least one value of | I (τ) | / √2. That is, when the interferogram is obtained by setting the Faraday rotation angle to 0 ° and 90 °, the signal level of at least one interferogram is the signal level of the interferogram obtained by performing the best polarization adjustment. 70% or more. Therefore, the phase spectrum φ (ν) can be obtained with almost the same S / N as the interferogram having a larger signal level out of the two interferograms.
[0026]
FIG. 3 shows various changes in the polarization state on the reference light side of the interferometer, and I 0 (r) (ν) and I 90 (r) (ν) are measured for each polarization state. ) Is a plot of the transmission spectrum A (ν) 2 obtained from the equation. As shown in the figure, the present invention makes it possible to measure a transmission spectrum with fluctuation within 2.5 dB even when the polarization state changes.
[0027]
FIG. 4 shows the phase error caused by the deviation from the design value of the total arrayed waveguide length constituting the arrayed waveguide type diffraction grating as the measurement optical device, and shows the interferometer having a larger signal level for each polarization state. It is obtained from gram. As shown in the figure, it was found that the phase error of the arrayed waveguide grating can be measured with an accuracy of 0.1 rad near the center and with an accuracy of 0.2 rad at the end regardless of the polarization state of the reference light.
[0028]
FIG. 5 shows a second embodiment of the present invention. Like the first embodiment, the
[0029]
As in the first embodiment, the propagation vector e 0 (ν) of the signal light arriving at the optical coupler 11 when the Faraday rotation angles are 0 ° and 90 ° is the same as the above equation (3). in addition, e r ([nu) also (4) is identical to the above equation equation. However, e 0 (ν) is
[0030]
[Formula 18]
Thus, the matrices P and R are reversed compared to the equation (3). Similarly, the interference component of the light intensity with a Faraday rotation angle of 90 ° is

And the equation (19) is integrated with respect to ν.

That is, the same amplitude spectrum A (ν) as in the first embodiment can be obtained.

Therefore, in the
