【0001】
【0014】
Aeff

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a dispersion shifted optical fiber, which has a small dispersion slope suitable for wavelength division multiplexing transmission.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In a wavelength division multiplexing transmission system capable of long-distance transmission and large-capacity transmission for 1.55 μm band (1490 to 1570 nm) that has been studied in the past, it is important to reduce nonlinear optical effects and prevent deterioration of transmission loss. is there.
The nonlinear optical effect is almost determined by the nonlinear constant. The non-linear constant is expressed by n 2 / Aeff. n 2 is a nonlinear refractive index, and Aeff is an effective core area. Since n 2 is almost constant depending on the material, the expansion of Aeff is an effective means for suppressing the nonlinear optical effect.
[0003]
Furthermore, in the wavelength division multiplexing transmission system, there is an increasing demand for reducing the dispersion slope. The dispersion slope indicates the wavelength dependence of the wavelength dispersion value, and is the slope of the curve when the wavelength (nm) is plotted on the horizontal axis and the wavelength dispersion value (ps / km / nm) is plotted on the vertical axis.
In a wavelength division multiplexing transmission system, if the dispersion slope of the transmission line (optical fiber) is large, the difference in chromatic dispersion value between wavelengths increases, and the transmission state of light of each wavelength varies, so that the overall transmission characteristics deteriorate.
In addition, as a transmission line of an optical communication system, it is required as a minimum condition that it is substantially a single mode and that a bending loss is kept at 100 dB / m or less.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the conventionally proposed dispersion-shifted optical fiber, it is sufficient to simultaneously increase Aeff and reduce the dispersion slope under the condition that it is substantially single mode and the bending loss is kept at 100 dB / m or less. It was difficult to be satisfied.
[0005]
For example, the dual shape type using the small diameter solution disclosed in JP-A-8-220362 has a minimum dispersion slope of around 0.10 ps / km / nm 2. In some cases, it was insufficient to be applied to a strictly required system.
In addition, the segment core type using the large diameter solution disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 11-1119045 can be obtained that is close to characteristics that have been required to some extent recently. However, since the segment core type has a refractive index distribution shape having a five-layer structure in which the refractive index increases or decreases, the characteristics slightly change depending on the position, width, shape, and the like of each layer. Therefore, a high degree of controllability of structural parameters such as the radius of each layer and the relative refractive index difference is required at the time of manufacture, and there is a limit to improving the product yield.
Here, at a wavelength of 1.55 μm, if the core diameter of the dispersion-shifted optical fiber is expanded while maintaining the similar shape of the refractive index distribution shape, there are two or more solutions in which the chromatic dispersion value becomes a desired value. It is known that At this time, among solutions in which characteristics such as bending loss and cut-off wavelength are in a relatively practical range, a solution having a relatively small core diameter is called a thin solution, and a thick solution is called a large solution.
[0006]
Also, as the number of channels (the number of multiplexed wavelengths) increases, the transmission band used so far is added to the so-called L band band (1570 to 1610 nm band) and applied to a wide transmission wavelength band ranging from 1490 to 1625 nm. There has been a demand for dispersion-shifted optical fibers.
Conventional dispersion-shifted optical fibers in which Aeff is expanded are designed with a view to transmission in the 1.55 μm band, and therefore, those having sufficient characteristics in the L band band have not been provided. Especially in the L band, bending loss often increases.
[0007]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and satisfies the expansion of Aeff and the reduction of the dispersion slope at the same time under the condition that it is substantially a single mode and the bending loss is kept at 100 dB / m or less. It is an object of the present invention to provide a dispersion-shifted optical fiber that can be used.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a dispersion-shifted optical fiber that can efficiently produce a stable characteristic with a simple structure as much as possible.
Further, even in a wide wavelength band extending from 1490 to 1625 nm including the L band, it is possible to substantially increase the Aeff and the dispersion slope under the condition that the bending loss is kept at 100 dB / m or less. It is an object to provide a dispersion-shifted optical fiber that can satisfy the reduction simultaneously.
In particular, an object of the present invention is to provide a dispersion-shifted optical fiber with a small bending loss in the L band.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the present invention proposes the following solution means. That is, the first invention includes a central core portion having a high refractive index, a stair core portion having a lower refractive index than the central core portion provided on the outer periphery of the central core portion, and an outer periphery of the stair core portion. In the dispersion-shifted optical fiber having a refractive index profile formed by a clad having a refractive index lower than that of the staircase core portion provided above, the radius of the central core portion is r1, the radius of the staircase core portion is r2, and the outermost side When the relative refractive index difference of the central core portion is Δ1 and the relative refractive index difference of the staircase core portion is Δ2 with reference to the refractive index of the cladding, r2 / r1 is 4 to 10, and Δ1 is 0.56. -0.65%, Δ2 / Δ1 is 0.07-0.15, a large- diameter solution is adopted as the core diameter , Aeff is 45-70 μm 2 at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and the dispersion slope is 0.05-0. 075 ps / km / nm 2 , bending loss is 10 0 dB / m or less, chromatic dispersion value is +0.05 to +10.0 ps / km / nm, Aeff is 45 to 70 μm 2 , dispersion slope is 0.05 to 0.075 ps / km / nm 2 at a wavelength of 1610 nm , Use wavelength arbitrarily selected from 1490 to 1625 nm with a bending loss of 100 dB / m or less, a chromatic dispersion value of +0.05 to +10.0 ps / km / nm, and a cutoff wavelength of 1066 to 1360 nm A dispersion-shifted optical fiber characterized by substantially single-mode propagation in the band . According to a second invention, in the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the first invention, the clad includes a first clad provided on the outer periphery of the stepped core portion and a second clad provided on the outer periphery. When the radius of the cladding is r3 and the relative refractive index difference of the first cladding is Δ3 with respect to the refractive index of the second cladding, Δ3 is −0.1 to 0%, (r3−r2) / r1 Is a dispersion-shifted optical fiber characterized in that is 0.2 to 4.0 .

In this example, for example, the first cladding 5 is made of fluorine-added quartz glass to which fluorine having an action of reducing the refractive index is added.
[0012]
The wavelength band of the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention is selected from the range of 1490 to 1625 nm, and generally from the range of 1490 to 1610 nm. For example, a wavelength band (for example, 1500 to 1520 nm) having a predetermined wavelength width is selected from a range of 1490 to 1530 nm depending on an amplification wavelength band by an optical fiber amplifier used in the optical communication system. Alternatively, a wavelength band having a predetermined wavelength width (for example, 1540 to 1565 nm) is selected from the range of 1530 to 1570 nm. Alternatively, a wavelength band (for example, 1570 to 1600 nm) having a predetermined wavelength width is selected from a range of 1570 to 1625 nm, which is a so-called L band band, and generally 1570 to 1610 nm.
Thus, it is one of the features of the present invention that the used wavelength band can be selected from the L band band.
In addition, the entire wavelength range of 1490 to 1625 nm can be set as a use wavelength band (transmission wavelength band).
[0013]
In the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention, the chromatic dispersion value is set to +0.05 to +10.0 ps / km / nm. If it is smaller than +0.05 ps / km / nm, the chromatic dispersion value is close to zero, and four-photon mixing, which is one of nonlinear optical effects, tends to occur, which is inconvenient. On the other hand, if it is higher than +10.0 ps / km / nm, the waveform may be distorted and the transmission characteristics may be greatly deteriorated.
[0014]
Aeff is obtained from the following equation.
[0015]
[Expression 1]
[0016]
Since the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention has an Aeff in the used wavelength band of 45 to 70 μm 2 , the nonlinear optical effect can be suppressed. If it is less than 45 μm 2, the reduction of the nonlinear optical effect is insufficient, and if it exceeds 70 μm 2 , it is difficult to manufacture.
The dispersion slope in the used wavelength band can realize a very small value of 0.050 to 0.075 ps / km / nm 2 . As a result, transmission degradation due to the dispersion slope can be prevented in wavelength division multiplexing transmission.
[0017]
The bending loss is a value under the condition that the bending diameter (2R) is 20 mm in the wavelength band used.
The bending loss is preferably as small as possible. In the present invention, the bending loss is 100 dB / m or less, preferably 50 dB / m or less. If it exceeds 100 dB / m, the transmission loss tends to deteriorate due to slight bending applied to the dispersion-shifted optical fiber, which is inconvenient because it tends to cause an extra loss during installation or handling.
[0018]
Further, since the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention is a single mode optical fiber, it is necessary to have a cutoff wavelength that substantially guarantees single mode propagation in the used wavelength band.
A normal cut-off wavelength is defined by a value by CCITT 2m method (hereinafter referred to as 2m method). However, in an actual long use state, single mode propagation is possible even if this value is longer than the lower limit value of the used wavelength band.
Therefore, in the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention, the cutoff wavelength defined by the 2m method is set so that single-mode propagation is possible depending on the length of use and the wavelength band of the dispersion-shifted optical fiber. Specifically, for example, if the cutoff wavelength in the 2 m method is 1.8 μm, single mode propagation in the above-described wavelength band can be realized in a long state of about 5000 m or longer.
[0019]
In the present invention, a large diameter solution is used as the core diameter (r2 × 2). Specifically, as will be described later, by simulation, in the refractive index distribution shape shown in FIG. 1A, four structural parameters r2, r1, Δ2, and Δ1, and the refraction shown in FIG. In the ratio distribution shape, characteristics such as Aeff and dispersion slope are set so that the core diameter becomes a large-diameter solution and the above-mentioned desired wavelength band is used when six structural parameters including r3 and Δ3 are set. Define design conditions that satisfy the values. In addition, as an actual manufacturing method of the dispersion shifted optical fiber of the present invention, a conventional method such as a CVD method or a VAD method can be applied. The dispersion-shifted optical fiber according to the present invention has three or four layers of refractive index profile, and has a relatively simple step shape, so that structural parameters can be controlled relatively easily.
[0020]
FIG. 2 is a graph showing an example of an analysis result regarding the structural parameters of the dispersion-shifted optical fiber having the refractive index distribution shape shown in FIG.
5, 7, and 10 corresponding to ◇, □, and Δ shown in the graph are the ratios r2 / r1 of the radii of the
From this graph, it can be seen that the dispersion slope can be reduced as r2 / r1 increases. In order to obtain the bending loss and Aeff within the above-mentioned preferable numerical range, it is preferable to set r2 / r1 to 4 or more. If it is less than 4, it is difficult to obtain good characteristics. Further, if the value is set to a value exceeding 12, manufacturability is lowered, so the substantial upper limit is set to 12. This condition is the same for the refractive index profile shown in FIG.
[0021]
In the refractive index profile shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B, Δ1 is set to 0.55% to 0.75%. If it is less than 0.55%, it becomes difficult to set the chromatic dispersion value in a desired range, and the bending loss tends to increase. If Δ1 exceeds 0.75%, it is difficult to sufficiently increase Aeff.
Δ2 / Δ1 is preferably 0.05 to 0.15. If it is less than 0.05, the bending loss increases, which is inconvenient. If it exceeds 0.15, the dispersion slope exceeds the specified range, which is inconvenient for wavelength multiplexing transmission.
[0022]
Table 1 shows the simulation results showing the structural parameters and characteristic values of a specific design example of the dispersion shifted optical fiber having the refractive index profile shown in FIG. 1A that satisfies these conditions. The estimated wavelength is 1.55 μm.
[0023]
[Table 1]
[0024]
All satisfy the preferable numerical ranges of Aeff, dispersion slope, chromatic dispersion value, bending loss, and cutoff wavelength of the present invention, and characteristics suitable for a wavelength division multiplexing transmission system are obtained.
Note that even if appropriate values are selected and combined within the numerical value ranges of the structural parameters as described above, these characteristic values are not necessarily obtained, and combinations of structural parameters that satisfy the characteristic values are as described above. It is necessary to select from simple graphs and simulation results. Therefore, since the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention is difficult to specify by the structural parameter, it is determined by the characteristic value.
[0025]
Further, Δ3 and r3 are set in the refractive index profile shown in FIG. Since the clad 7 has a two-layer structure composed of the first clad 5 and the second clad 6, the cutoff wavelength can be further shortened depending on the combination (setting) of the structural parameters as compared with the first example. And Aeff can be further expanded.
[0026]
3A and 3B show the relationship between Δ3 and bending loss, and the relationship between Δ3 and Aeff, respectively, in the refractive index profile shape in which the cladding shown in FIG. 1B has a two-layer structure. It is a thing. The estimated wavelength is 1.55 μm.
Δ1, Δ2, r1, and r2 are all common and are fixed. That is, Δ1 is 0.56% and Δ2 is 0.06%.
From this graph, it can be seen that if Δ3 is decreased, Aeff can be increased, but the bending loss increases.
Further, the behavior varies depending on (r3-r2) / r1.
Therefore, in consideration of the relationship between these structural parameters and characteristics, the structural parameters are set so as to satisfy the preferable numerical range of the above characteristics.
[0027]
Δ3 is preferably set to −0.1% or more. This is because if Δ3 is less than −0.1%, the transmission characteristics may deteriorate depending on the combination with other structural parameters.
In addition, (r3-r2) / r1 is preferably 4.0 or less in production. However, if (r3-r2) / r1 is small, it is necessary to reduce Δ3. Therefore, in order to suppress the deterioration of the transmission characteristics as described above, (r3-r2) / r1 is 0.2 or more. It is desirable that
[0028]
Table 2 shows simulation results showing structural parameters and characteristic values of a specific design example of a dispersion-shifted optical fiber that satisfies these conditions.
All satisfy the preferable numerical ranges of Aeff, dispersion slope, chromatic dispersion value, bending loss, and cut-off wavelength in the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention, and characteristics suitable for a wavelength division multiplexing transmission system are obtained.
[0029]
[Table 2]
[0030]
The estimated wavelength of the characteristics of the dispersion-shifted optical fibers shown in Tables 1 and 2 is 1.55 μm.
Tables 3 and 4 show the results of similar simulations with the estimated wavelength set at 1.61 μm. In any of Tables 1 to 4, characteristic values satisfying the numerical range of the present invention are obtained. Therefore, all of the dispersion-shifted optical fibers shown in Tables 1 to 4 have small chromatic dispersion and bending loss not only in the 1.55 μm band but also in a wide wavelength band (for example, 1490 to 1610 nm) including 1570 to 1625 nm. The single-mode transmission can be ensured, the Aeff can be increased, the nonlinear optical effect can be suppressed, and the transmission dispersion in the wavelength division multiplexing transmission can be suppressed by the small dispersion slope.
Therefore, transmission characteristics can also be improved in a wavelength division multiplexing transmission system applied to a wide wavelength range including the L band.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, the following effects can be obtained in the dispersion-shifted optical fiber of the present invention.
In other words, it is possible to satisfy both the suppression of the nonlinear effect and the reduction of the dispersion slope due to the expansion of Aeff at the same time under the condition that it is substantially a single mode and the bending loss is kept at 100 dB / m or less, and a good transmission. Characteristics are obtained. This characteristic is particularly effective in wavelength multiplexing transmission.
In addition, since the structure is stepwise and relatively simple, it is easy to control the structural parameters at the time of manufacture, and a stable characteristic can be manufactured efficiently.
In addition, the above-mentioned characteristics can be maintained even in a wide wavelength band extending from 1490 to 1625 nm including the L band band, and it is possible to cope with the long distance and large capacity of the wavelength multiplexing system.
Particularly in the L band band, a practical bending loss can be obtained.
