本発明は、パーソナルコンピュータ、ワードプロセッサ等の情報処理機器、家庭用ゲーム機器等に用いられるポインティングデバイスに関する。

【従来の技術】
近年、ポインティングデバイスは操作者のタッチを検出するスイッチ機能を持たせ省スペース、省組立工数化および操作の簡易化が要望されている。

以下に従来のポインティングデバイスについて説明する。
図3,図4は従来のポインティングデバイスの構成を示すものである。1は本体としてのノートサイズのパーソナルコンピュータであり、2は入力を行うための複数のキーを配列したキーボード、3はキー間に設けられたスティック状のポインティングデバイス、4はポインティングデバイス3の入力スイッチである。ポインティングデバイス3は、ロッド5、ゴムキャップ6、荷重センサ7により構成されている。操作者は人差し指でポインティングデバイス3を操作し、同じ手または別の手の他の指で入力スイッチ4を操作する。このため入力スイッチ4はポインティングデバイス3から離れた位置に配置されている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら上記の従来の構成では、入力スイッチ4を指の届く範囲に配置する必要があるため場所が限られ設計の自由度がなくなる。またポインティングデバイス3と別部品になるため配線、取付部品等が必要になり組立工数が多くなってしまうという問題点と、操作上でも片手でポインティングデバイス3と入力スイッチ4の両方を操作するには熟練が必要であり、両手で操作しなければならないという問題点を有していた。

本発明は上記従来の問題点を解決するもので、取付工数が少なく、操作性に優れたポインティングデバイスを提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
この目的を達成するために本発明のポインティングデバイスは、キーボードのキー間に搭載されるスティック状のポインティングデバイスの上面部分または支持部分に操作者のタッチを検出するタッチセンサを埋め込み等により設け、ポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチの機能を持たせたものである。

この構成によって、キーボードのキー間に搭載されるポインティングデバイスの上面部分に操作者のタッチを検出するタッチセンサを設けることによりポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチの機能を持たせることができ、前記ポインティングデバイスと入力スイッチ部が一体になり省スペース、低工数化を図ることができる。また通常ポインティングデバイスを操作する指と同じ指の一本だけで前記ポインティングデバイス操作と入力スイッチ操作の両方を行うことができる。

以下本発明の一実施例について、図面を参照しながら説明する。なお、従来例と同一構成部品には同じ符号で示し説明は省略する。

図1において、8はゴムキャップ6上に取り付けられたタッチセンサである。
以上のように構成されたポインティングデバイスについて、図1、図2を用いてその動作を説明する。操作者はロッド5上のゴムキャップ6に指で力を加えることにより荷重センサ7の値を制御手段が読み取りディスプレー上のマウスカーソルを移動させる。目的のポイントに移動させた後、指を離し時間t以内にタッチセンサ8にタッチすることによりポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチ操作(従来技術で示したポインティングデバイス3の入力スイッチ4の機能となるディスプレー上のマウスカーソル位置の確定)を行う。ゴムキャップ6に力を加えているときタッチセンサ8に指が触れる場合も考えられるが、ポインティングデバイス3の制御手段側で同時検出を無効とすることにより誤操作は防止できる。時間tを越えてタッチ入力があった場合操作者の入力の意図によるものでないものと判断してもよいし、新たな入力と判断してもよい。

図2(b),(c)はタッチ動作の定義例を示す。これはタッチセンサ8にタッチしている時間に意味を持たせるものであり、たとえばタッチセンサ8に時間Tの間触れた後時間Tだけ指を離し、再度時間Tの間触れるという動作を行った場合制御手段側では2回オン(ダブルクリック)したと判断する。これは時間3Tの間触れるという動作にあてはめる。これにより1回のタッチでダブルクリックが実現できるため指の移動が少なくなり操作性が向上するという効果を有する。同様に時間Tとタッチセンサ8にタッチする回数をいろいろ組み合わせることにより複雑な操作をより簡単な操作に定義することができる。

以上のように本実施例によれば、ディスプレー上のマウスカーソルの移動およびポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチ操作が指一本で可能となる。また初心者にとっても特別な練習をすることなく容易に操作することができる。

上記実施例においてタッチセンサ8はゴムキャップ6上に配置しているが、これをゴムキャップ6とロッド5の間に配置してもよい。この場合タッチセンサ8が外観に現れなくなるので従来品と同等の美観を保つことができる。

以上のように本発明は、キーボードのキー間に搭載されるスティック状のポインティングデバイスの上面部分または支持部分に操作者のタッチを検出するタッチセンサを埋め込み等により設け、そのタッチセンサにより前記ポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチの機能を持たせることにより、前記ポインティングデバイスと前記ポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチ部が一体になり省スペース化、低組立工数化が図れる。また、前記ポインティングデバイスを操作する指と同じ指の一本だけで前記ポインティングデバイス操作と前記ポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチ操作の両方を行うことができ、初心者でも容易に操作することができる。

また、タッチされている状態からいったん離されて一定時間以内に再度タッチされた場合を操作者が前記ポインティングデバイス用の入力スイッチ操作を意図するものとして認識し、前記操作に続けてタッチまたは離される動作の組み合わせと各動作の行われた時間によって操作者の意図した操作を複数定義することにより複雑な操作を簡単な操作に置き換えることができ、操作性が向上する。
