ワイヤハーネス、例えば、自動車用のワイヤハーネスには、従来、断面円形の丸線を束ねたものが使用されていたが、近年、配線スペースの低減による搭乗スペースの増加を目的として、フラットケーブルが用いられるようになった。
ここで、車内配線にフラットケーブルを用いる場合、フラットケーブル相互の接続には中継コネクタが必要で、例えば、コネクタ本体の両側からフラットケーブルを挿入して接続する中継コネクタが開示されている(例えば、特開平5−101859号公報)。

ところで、フラットケーブルは、複数の扁平な電気導体を電気絶縁性の合成樹脂で被覆した厚さ1mm以下の扁平なケーブルで剛性が小さい。このため、フラットケーブルを上記公報に開示された中継コネクタで用いると、フラットケーブルが曲がり易く、挿入するのに多大な手間を要する。特に、車内配線等の接続作業においては、安全のため、作業者が軍手等の手袋をはめていることから、フラットケーブルと中継コネクタとの接続作業が非常に行い難いという問題があった。

本発明は上記の点に鑑みてなされたもので、手袋を着用していても、フラットケーブルの接続が容易なコネクタ、および該コネクタにおけるフラットケーブルの端末構造を提供することを目的とする。

本発明においては上記目的を達成するため、フラットケーブルの端末構造を、複数の偏平な電気導体と該複数の電気導体を被覆する絶縁層を有するフラットケーブルの端末部と、該フラットケーブルの端末部において各電気導体に対してそれぞれ接続された端子と、前記フラットケーブルの端末部と前記端子を収納固定する収納部を有するハウジングと、前記ハウジング内に前記フラットケーブルの端子部と前記端子が収容固定された状態で前記ハウジング内に係合装着されるリテーナとを有し、前記リテーナは、前記フラットケーブルの端末部を前記収納部に対して押圧するとともに前記各電気導体に対して設けられた端子同士を絶縁する複数のリブを有する構造とし、また、かかる構造を有するコネクタとしたのである(請求項1および3)。

以下、本発明のコネクタに係る一実施形態を図1乃至図18に基づいて詳細に説明する。
コネクタ1は、図1に示すように、ポリブチレンテレフタレート(PBT)等の電気絶縁性の合成樹脂から成形された雌ハウジング2と雄ハウジング5とを有している。
