BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image reading apparatus that reads an image and sends the read image to a host computer or an image forming apparatus, and a control method of the image reading apparatus. Specifically, the scanner sends the read image to a host computer. Image reading unit of a stand-alone copying machine that copies a visible image between an image reading unit and an image forming unit that are connected in a one-to-one relationship, and a network copying machine that copies a visible image between network copying machines connected to a network It is suitable for use in an image reading device such as an image reading unit, an image reading unit of a facsimile machine, and an image reading unit of an image filing device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventional analog copying machines perform image formation by irradiating light to a document and guiding the reflected light to a photosensitive drum. Due to optical path limitations, scanning a double-sided document is possible while inverting the document. It was necessary to do it one by one.
After that, the copier was digitized and the image reading was performed by a CCD or the like, so that it is not always necessary to read the image one side at a time, but the image forming unit can form an image only one side at a time. On the other hand, due to the extension from the above-mentioned analog type copying machine, the commercialization of a copying machine that simultaneously reads both sides of a double-sided document has not been realized.
[0003]
This will be described in detail. First, in a conventional copying machine, the image reading unit and the image forming unit are connected one-to-one. Normally, the maximum speed for single-sided reading and the maximum speed for single-sided image formation are designed to be the same. On the other hand, since image formation on both sides takes twice or more times on one side, reading may take twice or more times on one side. That is, in the past, there was no point in speeding up only reading by making both sides simultaneous reading.
[0004]
In addition, facsimiles and filing devices that can be read simultaneously on both sides have been proposed (Japanese Patent Laid-Open Nos. 9-116714 and 6-125453). However, in these facsimiles and filing apparatuses, the output is black and white binary data, and those that handle black and white multi-value data and color data have not been proposed.
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In recent years, the price of image storage devices has decreased, and it has become possible to mount large-capacity image storage devices in image reading devices. In this case, if the double-sided original can be read simultaneously and written to the image storage device, the user can quickly return with the original. This is particularly effective in the case of a scanner device or a facsimile device, and also effective in the case where the number of copies is large in a copying machine.
[0006]
In recent years, a network copying function has been proposed in which image data read by an image reading unit of a copying machine is formed by an image forming unit of another copying machine via a network. As described above, when the image reading unit and the image forming unit are not connected one-on-one like the conventional copying machine, the image forming speed on one side of the image forming unit is the image reading speed on one side of the image reading unit. Faster cases also come out. In this case, if the double-sided original can be read simultaneously by the image reading unit, the ability of the fast image forming unit can be utilized.
[0007]
As described above, in the image reading apparatus, when both sides of a double-sided original are to be read simultaneously, reading means are provided for each side, but it is important to match their reading characteristics. The reason is that if the reading characteristics of the reading means on each surface are different, the read results will be different on both sides.
[0008]
Conventionally, facsimiles and filing devices have been proposed that can be read simultaneously on both sides. However, in these devices, the output is monochrome binary data, and there is no need to worry about the difference in reading characteristics. In fact, no proposal has been made to correct the difference in reading characteristics. On the other hand, image data handled by a copying machine has many monochrome multi-value image data and color image data, and if there is a difference in reading characteristics, the image appears prominently in the image, which is a problem to be solved.
In particular, in a network scanner or a network copying machine that sends a scanned image to another device via a network, and a facsimile that sends a scanned image to another device via a public line, the image data is sent to the destination. Therefore, it is particularly important to match the image reading characteristics on both sides.

[0014]
The image reading apparatus according to the present embodiment has a function of reading both sides of a double-sided document substantially simultaneously by two image reading units 7-1 and 7-2. The first side of the single-sided original and the double-sided original is read by the image reading unit 7-1, and the second side of the double-sided original is read by the image reading unit 7-2. As described above, by reading both sides of the double-sided document almost simultaneously, the reading time of the double-sided document can be shortened, and the time for the operator to wait for the reading can be shortened.
[0015]
When performing double-sided simultaneous reading in this way, it is important to match the reading characteristics of the two image reading units 7-1 and 7-2. In particular, the

In reading the book document, the image reading unit 7-1 is scanned in the direction of the
[0037]
In FIG. 3, the first image reading unit 7-1 and the second image reading unit 7-2 are arranged with their positions slightly shifted. This is to avoid the possibility that if the light is read at the same position, the light emitted from the light source on one side passes through the paper and adversely affects the image reading on the reverse side.

FIG. 4 shows a test document 51 used for measuring the characteristics of each image reading unit. The test original 51 is printed with density patches that are evenly divided into 11 stages, with the maximum density readable by the image reading apparatus being 100% and the minimum density readable by the image reading apparatus being 0%. Has been. In this embodiment, 11 steps are used to simplify the description, but the number of steps may be increased. In this embodiment, the maximum density that can be read by the image reading apparatus is set to 100%, and the minimum density that can be read by the image reading apparatus is set to 0%. Each density data may be arranged as a scale.
[0039]
In addition, since density data and luminance data are generally in a log relationship (non-linear relationship), instead of linearly arranging the density patches in the density data as shown in FIG. 4, the luminance patches are arranged linearly in the luminance data. You may comprise as follows. That is, the maximum luminance that can be read by the image reading device is set to 0%, the minimum luminance that can be read by the image reading device is set to 100%, and each luminance patch is equally divided into 11 levels with respect to the luminance. Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described.
The second embodiment differs from the first embodiment only in the type of image data to be read, the configuration of the test document, the type of read characteristics to be measured and corrected, and the measurement method. For this reason, only the difference will be described.
[0058]
First, the first difference from the first embodiment is that the image reading apparatus of the present embodiment has the same configuration as that of FIG. 1, but the image data generated by the
[0059]
As the reading unit has a color reading function, the image forming unit of the present embodiment is also formed of a color image forming unit capable of forming a color image. As a result, the
[0060]
Next, the second embodiment is different from the first embodiment in that not only the gradation characteristics handled in the first embodiment but also the position characteristics are matched as the reading characteristics of the image reading unit. is there. It is important to match the position characteristics because there is a problem that the position of the image read on each surface is different. In particular, when copying a double-sided original and making a double-sided copy, it is more important because the position of each side of the double-sided copy can be seen through.
[0061]
Next, the third difference from the first embodiment is that the test document is a double-sided document in which different test patterns are arranged on both sides. FIG. 6A shows a test pattern arranged on the first surface of a double-sided test document, which is the same as the test document of the first embodiment, and measures the gradation characteristics of each reading device. Is for. FIG. 6B shows a test pattern arranged on the second surface of the double-sided test document, which is used to measure the position characteristics of each reading device.
[0062]
In this way, by placing different test patterns on the first and second sides of the double-sided document, the double-sided test document is placed on the document feeding placement unit 31 with the first side facing up, and passes once. By simply papering, the gradation characteristics can be measured for the first image reading unit, while the position characteristics can be measured for the second image reading unit, and a plurality of measurements can be performed at a time. Then, the double-sided test document is placed on the document feed placement unit 31 with the second side up, and reading is performed, whereby the position characteristics of the first image reading unit can be measured. With respect to the second image reading unit, the gradation characteristics can be measured, and four measurements can be performed by passing paper twice.
[0063]
Incidentally, the same test pattern (for example, FIG. 4) is arranged on both sides of the test document, and the method of simultaneously measuring the same type of reading characteristics on both sides with one sheet passing is also one embodiment. Although this has the advantage that the measurement time is shortened, there is a drawback that an error is likely to occur because the measurement is performed based on another document surface.
[0064]
In the present embodiment, since the document placed on the document feed placement unit 31 is automatically fed to the reading position, the operator places the book document directly on the
[0065]
FIG. 7A corresponds to FIG. 5A in the first embodiment and is for explaining the color multi-value gradation characteristics. Since the image reading unit of the present embodiment reads a color image, the reading element is composed of an RGB CCD. For this reason, the reading gradation characteristics of the image reading unit exist for each of RGB. A characteristic 52 in FIG. 7A is an ideal reading characteristic of each color of the image reading unit, as in the first embodiment. On the other hand, the actual RGB reading characteristics of the first image reading unit 7-1 are R characteristics 63-1, G characteristics 63-2, and B characteristics 63 due to variations in the reading sensitivity of each CCD. As shown in -3, the values are different for each RGB. For simplification of explanation, FIG. 7A shows only a graph of RGB reading characteristics of the first image reading unit 7-1, but RGB reading of the second image reading unit 7-2 is performed. Similarly, the characteristics vary for each color.
[0066]
FIG. 7B corresponds to FIG. 5A in the first embodiment, and the RGB reading characteristics of the first image reading unit 7-1 obtained in FIG. 7A. 6 is a graph showing a correction process performed by the read characteristic correction unit 8-1 to correct the error. The R characteristic correction graph 64-1 corresponds to the R reading characteristic 63-1, the G characteristic correction graph 64-2 corresponds to the G reading characteristic 63-2, and the B reading characteristic 63-. 3 corresponds to the B characteristic correction graph 64-3. For simplification of explanation, FIG. 7B shows only the characteristic correction graph for correcting the RGB reading characteristics of the first image reading unit 7-1, but the second image reading unit 7-2. Similarly, a characteristic correction graph for correcting the RGB reading characteristics is also created.
[0067]
Since each characteristic correction graph is an inverse function of each characteristic, the RGB data read by the first image reading unit 7-1 is corrected by the reading characteristic correction unit 8-1 as shown in FIG. 7B. As a result, the reading characteristics as a whole can be substantially matched with the
[0068]
FIG. 8 is a flowchart for explaining the control flow of the multi-function peripheral according to the second embodiment. Since the control flow of the present embodiment is similar to the control flow of the first embodiment of FIG. 2, only the difference in control from FIG. 2 will be described.
8 differs from FIG. 2 only in the processing of S34, S36, and S38. First, in the first reading of the test document in S34, the first image reading unit arranged on the first surface of the test document described with reference to FIG. 6A in the same manner as in the first embodiment. In addition to reading the gradation characteristic measurement test pattern and measuring the gradation characteristic, the position characteristic placed on the second surface of the test document described with reference to FIG. Read the test pattern for measurement and measure the position characteristics.
[0069]
In this way, two measurements can be performed simultaneously. For the measurement of the position characteristics, the image data read from the test pattern for measuring the position characteristics is written into the
[0070]
In the first embodiment, the monochrome multi-value gradation characteristics are measured. In the present embodiment, the color multi-value gradation characteristics are measured as shown in FIG. Similarly, in the second reading of the inverted test document in S36, the gradation characteristics measurement test pattern arranged on the first surface of the test document is read by the second image reading unit to measure the gradation characteristics. At the same time, the first image reading unit reads the position characteristic measurement test pattern arranged on the second surface of the test document and measures the position characteristic.
[0071]
Incidentally, the gradation characteristic correction data of the first image reading unit 7-1 measured in S34 is written in the reading characteristic correction unit 8-1 at S34 in the present embodiment. This is because the measurement of the position characteristics is not affected by whether or not the gradation characteristics are corrected. On the other hand, when the first correction affects the second measurement, the first measurement result is temporarily held in a volatile RAM or the like, and after all the measurements are completed, each reading
[0072]
Next, in reading the image data in S38, not only color multi-value gradation correction is performed by each reading
[0073]
As described above, in the present embodiment, the image data of the image range corrected by the position characteristics is written in the memory, but instead, the image data of a wider range is written in the image memory for the time being, and the image data is read from the image memory. When reading, the image position may be corrected by changing the reading position.
[0074]
In each of the above embodiments, the image data read by the hardware LUT is corrected. However, the present invention is not limited to this. For example, the correction may be performed by changing the lamp light amount or the CCD amplification degree. Good.
[0075]
Next, a third embodiment of the present invention will be described.
The third embodiment differs from the first embodiment only in the type of image data to be read, the type of read characteristics to be measured and corrected, and the measurement method. Specifically, the image reading unit of this embodiment performs color multi-valued image reading as in the second embodiment, and measures the color characteristics and show-through characteristics of each image reading unit. Correction is performed, and measurement is performed by automatically inverting the document using a document reversing paper feeding mechanism. Below, only a different part is demonstrated.

FIG. 10A is a diagram for explaining a test document 81 used for measuring the characteristics of each image reading unit in the present embodiment. The test document 81 of the present embodiment is a single-sided document, and is provided with 24-color patches 82-1 to 82-24. In the present embodiment, this test document is used to measure color characteristics and show-through characteristics.
[0080]
First, color characteristics are obtained. The values obtained by reading 24 color patches are the color characteristics as they are. Next, correction of color characteristics can be performed to some degree by color correction that is independent for each RGB as described in the second embodiment. However, in order to perform more precise color correction, it is also necessary to perform correction between RGB data. In the color reading apparatus according to the present embodiment, correction is performed by performing a process called input masking by the hardware circuit in the reading
[0081]
[Expression 1]
[0082]
Rin, Gin, and Bin are RGB data input to the input masking unit. The Rin, Gin, and Bin are subjected to matrix operation by a 3 × 3 matrix having coefficients A11 to A33, and Rout, Gout, Bout is output from the input masking unit. In the case of the present embodiment, for an ideal image reading unit, the coefficient of the input masking unit is 1.0 for A11, A22, and A33, and 0 for other than that, that is, no correction is performed. On the other hand, since the actual image reading unit varies in color characteristics due to a change in the color of the light source or deterioration of the color filter of each CCD, it is necessary to perform input masking processing by changing the coefficients of A11 to A33 and perform correction. is there.
[0083]
There are various methods for obtaining the coefficients A11 to A33. In the present embodiment, the method is as follows. First, an ideal value of image data when each color patch is read by an ideal image reading unit is held in the
[0084]
Next, the show-through characteristic is measured. First, dark black is arranged on the color patch 82-1 of the test document. Then, this test document is read from the back, and density data of the portion 82-1 is calculated. If it is α, α is 0 in an ideal image reading unit without show-through. Further, when the light source is too strong in the actual image reading unit, show-through occurs, and α is larger than zero. Next, correction of the show-through characteristic will be described. In order to completely eliminate the influence of the show-through, the portion where the read density is α or less may be white.
[0085]
FIG. 10B is a graph showing the relationship between the input value to the show-through characteristic correction unit and the corrected output value. In an ideal image reading unit without show-through, α is 0 and the correction graph is 83. On the other hand, in the image reading unit with the show-through level α (α> 0), the correction graph is as shown in 84 so that the portion where the read density is α or less is white. In the present embodiment, the show-through characteristic correction unit is incorporated in the reading
[0086]
FIG. 11 is a flowchart for explaining a control flow of the multifunction machine according to the third embodiment. Since the control flow of the present embodiment is similar to the control flow of the first embodiment of FIG. 2, only the difference in control from FIG. 2 will be described.
11 differs from FIG. 1 only in the processing of S54 to S56 and S58. First, in the first reading of a test document in S54, the first image reading unit 7-1 reads the test document of FIG. 10A and measures the color characteristics. At the same time, the second image reading unit 7-2 reads the test document of FIG. 10A from the back side and measures the show-through characteristics. The measurement result of each characteristic is temporarily held in the volatile RAM 17.
[0087]
When the characteristic measurement is completed, the test document is reversed using the reverse sheet feeding mechanisms 71 to 75. Next, in S55, the inverted test document is read, and this time, the show-through characteristic is measured by the first image reading unit 7-1 and the color characteristic is measured by the second image reading unit 7-2. The measurement result of each characteristic is temporarily held in the volatile RAM 17. When the characteristic measurement is completed, the test document is discharged. Next, in S56, correction data is calculated based on the measurement results of each characteristic temporarily held in the volatile RAM 17, and is set in the input masking process in the reading
[0088]
In each of the above embodiments, the reading characteristics of each image reading unit are matched with the ideal reading characteristics, so that both reading characteristics are matched. You may make it match with the reading characteristic. For example, when the lamp light amount on one side cannot be increased to the ideal lamp light amount, the lamp light amount on the other side is reduced to match both.
[0089]
Further, in each of the above embodiments, the

Furthermore, in each of the embodiments described above, examples in which a local area network is connected have been described. In this case, it can be sent directly from the scanner at the A branch to the computer at the B branch or the network copier at the C branch. It may be connected to the network via the Internet.
