数2は、Y3=C1Y1+C2Y2=C1(Y1+C2Y2/C1)と考え、C2Y2/C1のY2による微係数が連続となるようにしたものである。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image conversion method and an image conversion apparatus for compressing a brightness dynamic range of an image in which each pixel has a luminance value indicating shading. In the present specification, the “spatial frequency” of the luminance of the two-dimensional image is also an expression including the frequency of the one-dimensional luminance for each line (each row or each column).
[0002]
[Prior art]
When taking an image with a large difference in brightness and darkness that has both a shadow area and a sunny area and displaying it on a display device with a low brightness dynamic range, the dark area in the image will be blacked out or the bright area will be whiteout. Thus, it is difficult to grasp an object or the like in the image. Contrast of a specific luminance range can be improved by gradation conversion that assigns many gradations to a specific luminance range such as a bright part and a dark part, but the contrast of other luminance ranges is reduced. Arise. Therefore, a method for compressing the dynamic range of an image called “Homomorphic Filtering” is known. In Homomorphic Filtering, by removing or suppressing low spatial frequency components of luminance, information on illumination intensity such as difference in shade and uneven illumination is suppressed, and objects in images in both shaded areas and sunny areas Etc. are easy to grasp. 18 (a) and 18 (b) show the concept. In FIG. 18 (a), the luminance of a pixel of one image is captured, logarithmic transformed (log, 91), then converted to image data by a high spatial frequency component by a high pass filter (HPF, 92), and inverse logarithmic transformed (log -1 93). Further, in FIG. 18B, after the luminance of one image pixel is captured and logarithmically converted (log, 91), image data based on low spatial frequency components is obtained with a low-pass filter (LPF, 94). The inverse logarithm transformation (log) is performed after adding the image data which is the output of the logarithmic transformation (log, 91) which has not been subjected to low-pass filtering by inverting the sign and the
[0003]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In Homomorphic Filtering, “low spatial frequency components” are uniformly suppressed. For example, when applied to an image of a large white object (or its surface), white objects that become large in the screen are grayed out uniformly. End up. For example, when Homomorphic Filtering is applied to an image including road markings, white lines and pedestrian crossings may become gray and identification of road markings may be extremely difficult. This is because the low-frequency white object becomes relatively darker than the high-frequency white object by suppressing the low spatial frequency component. This problem is particularly noticeable when a simple method is adopted in which the frequency in one direction of the vertical or horizontal direction is suppressed as the low spatial frequency component. For example, when a vertical white line and a horizontal white line exist in the image, if the frequency analysis is performed in the horizontal direction, only the horizontal white line is grayed out. This is an image conversion with a very uncomfortable feeling. For the same reason, a low-frequency low-frequency component may be brightened, but the uncomfortable feeling is small compared to the graying of a white object. There is also a problem that noise is conspicuous in a low luminance part by uniformly suppressing low frequency components. This is because the high-frequency component is uniformly relatively enhanced even in a low-luminance portion with a small S / N ratio of the captured image. When an image with a dynamic range compressed with a high average luminance is displayed, the low luminance portion is displayed brightly, so that the image becomes more conspicuous.
[0004]
Therefore, for example, methods described in Japanese Patent Nos. 1530832, 2509503, and 2663189 have been proposed for medical imaging devices and the like. The method disclosed in Japanese Patent No. 1530832 is an image sharpening method in which the enhancement degree of the high-frequency component increases as the image density increases. The original image is Sorg, the low-frequency image is Sus, and the enhancement coefficient is β. A reproduced image S ′ is obtained by S ′ = Sorg + β (Sorg + Sus). The enhancement of noise is prevented by monotonically increasing the enhancement coefficient β according to the density of the original image or the low-frequency image. Since this method is a sharpening method, noise enhancement can be suppressed, but noise cannot be suppressed more than the original image. Also, the dynamic range cannot be compressed. The method disclosed in Japanese Patent No. 2509503 is a method of creating correction data for dynamic range compression using low spatial frequency components of an image signal, and compressing the dynamic range of the image signal using this correction data. The dynamic range compression correction data is obtained by subjecting a signal value based on an image signal to a threshold value to be a constant value in one case, and based on a low spatial frequency component in the other case. That is, either the bright part or the dark part in the image is not corrected, and the other is a method in which the dynamic range can be compressed. By this method, by compressing the dynamic range only in the dark part of the image and not compressing the dynamic range in the bright part, graying of a large white object can be prevented, but noise in a low luminance part cannot be suppressed. . In addition, since the frequency characteristics change abruptly at the boundary between the bright part and the dark part, there is a problem that a ceremonial outline is generated. The method disclosed in Japanese Patent No. 2663189 is a method of calculating a low-frequency image by averaging the pixels in a predetermined range near each pixel of the original image, and processing based on the low-frequency image. Specifically, this is a method of compressing the dynamic range by adding the output of a monotone decreasing function with the luminance of the low-frequency image as an argument to each pixel to the density value of the corresponding pixel of the original image. This is a method in which only a desired brightness range such as a bright part and a dark part can be compressed by setting the characteristic of a monotonic decrease function. Although it is possible to prevent the appearance of a ceremonial outline by continuing the derivative of the monotone decreasing function, noise cannot be suppressed in a low-luminance portion because the original image components are always added at a constant value.
[0005]
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-described problems. The purpose of the present invention is to make a large white object (or an area thereof) within the screen without causing dark areas to be blackened or causing dark noise to be noticeable. An object is to provide an image conversion method or an image conversion apparatus that has all of these characteristics without being grayed out. Furthermore, even when only a one-dimensional frequency such as one direction (vertical direction or horizontal direction) of an image is handled as a low spatial frequency component, an image conversion method or an image conversion apparatus with less sense of incongruity of the converted image is provided. It is to be.

[Operation and effect of the invention]
Original image pixel brightness Y 1 Low-frequency image pixel brightness Y corresponding to 2 From the two coefficients C 1 , C 2 Therefore, the suppression amount of the low frequency component can be changed according to the luminance of the low frequency component such as the illumination intensity. The coefficient C 1 Is a continuous function positive or zero, coefficient C 2 Is the continuous function Y 2 A monotonically decreasing function in a broad sense that takes positive, zero, and negative values in a continuous first range including the minimum value of 2 Is a monotonically increasing function in a broad sense that takes a negative or zero value in a second continuous range including the maximum value of. Therefore, luminance Y 2 Coefficient C, including the minimum of 2 Since the low frequency component is emphasized more than the original image in the positive portion, that is, the low luminance portion, the noise component can be suppressed more than the original image. Coefficient C 2 In the negative part where the monotonously decreases, the luminance Y 2 Since the suppression amount of the low frequency component is smaller as the S is smaller, the high frequency component is relatively less emphasized as the S / N ratio of the captured image is smaller, so that noise can be prevented from being noticeable. Luminance Y 2 Coefficient C including the maximum value of 2 When Y is negative or increases monotonically with 0, luminance Y 2 As the value increases, the amount of suppression of low frequency components decreases. Therefore, since the amount of suppression of the low-frequency component with high luminance is reduced, it is possible to provide an image conversion method or image conversion apparatus that can prevent a white object image having a large area on the screen from being grayed out. (
[0017]
Two coefficients C 1 , C 2 Is the sum of brightness Y 2 Since the transmission rate of the zero spatial frequency component in the converted image is constant in at least the third continuous range in the entire range, the contrast decreases in that range. This can be prevented (claims 2 and 10). In addition, brightness Y 2 Coefficient C over the entire range of 1 , C 2 If the sum of the two is constant, it is possible to prevent the low-frequency component from lowering the contrast in the entire luminance range (claims 3 and 11). Luminance Y 2 In the fourth continuous range of 1 Is a positive constant value and the coefficient C 2 Is a negative constant value, and in this range, the degree of suppression of low-frequency components is constant, so that the dynamic range can be compressed at a constant compression rate. (Claims 4 and 12).
[0018]
Luminance Y 2 Luminance Y in the first range of 2 Function C 2 / C 1 Is a monotonically decreasing function in a broad sense, so that the luminance Y in the first range (low luminance portion) 2 As the value of becomes smaller, the degree of suppression of lower frequency components becomes smaller. Therefore, in a dark part where the S / N ratio is small, the degree of high frequency component enhancement is relatively small, so that noise does not stand out, and the frequency characteristics continuously change, so that the image does not feel strange. Luminance Y 2 Luminance Y in the second range of 2 Function C 2 / C 1 Is a monotonically increasing function in a broad sense, so that the luminance Y in the second range (high luminance part) 2 Since the low-frequency component is not suppressed as the value of becomes larger, darkening of a high-brightness large region (greying of the white region) does not occur (claims 5 and 13). Function C 2 / C 1 Is Y 2 Is a monotonically decreasing function in a narrow sense in the first range of 2 In the second range, these effects become even more prominent if they are monotonically increasing functions in a narrow sense. In addition, brightness Y 2 The coefficient C in all of the second range and beyond 1 Is a positive constant value, and brightness Y 2 By reducing the amount of suppression of low-frequency components as the value of increases, the contrast of the high-luminance portion can be increased (claims 6 and 14).
[0019]
Coefficient C 1 And C 2 Is the luminance Y 2 The sum is positive and constant in the entire range of brightness Y 2 In a fifth continuous range including the minimum of 1
[0020]
In each of the above inventions, when low-frequency image extraction is performed for one dimension such as one direction (vertical direction or horizontal direction) of the image as a low spatial frequency, the edge portion in the direction where low-frequency image extraction is not performed is low. Generation of overshoot and undershoot due to suppression of frequency components can be suppressed. That is, the converted image becomes more natural. Furthermore, by performing low-frequency image extraction in one dimension, a simple image conversion method or a simple and high-speed image conversion device can be obtained.

C 1 C when is constant 2 Y 2 / C 1 Y 2 The value obtained by inverting the sign of the derivative by is the dynamic range compression ratio. 2 In contrast, the dynamic range compression rate can be continuously changed. In fact, the coefficient C 1 , C 2 Is continuous and C 2 Y 2 / C 1 Y 2 = T 2 The derivative of at (g-1) is the same on both the left and right sides. C 2 Y 2 / C 1 Y 2 ≧ T 2 The derivative at is as follows.
[Equation 3]
[0036]
From Equation 3, Y 2 = T 2 At C 2 Y 2 / C 1 The right derivative of is g-1. Y 2 = T 2 It can be seen that the dynamic range compression rate changes smoothly at. Increase γ to increase brightness Y 2 The dynamic range compression rate changes more steeply with respect to the change in the value. Y when γ = 1 2 ≧ T 2 At C 2 = g-1 and brightness Y 2 The dynamic range compression ratio does not change even if changes. In addition, the derivative shown in Equation 3 is the luminance Y 2 Increases monotonically with increasing, i.e., the dynamic range compression ratio decreases monotonically, Y 2 = Y 2max The dynamic range compression rate is zero. Therefore, in addition to having the same effect as in the first embodiment, the dynamic range compression rate continuously changes with respect to the luminance, so that a converted image with a less uncomfortable feeling can be obtained.

[Fourth embodiment]
As a modification of the first embodiment, the luminance Y of the low-frequency image 2 Coefficient C which is a function of 1 , C 2 The following can also be adopted. The present embodiment corresponds to the embodiments of
[Expression 4]
[0038]
The graph of Formula 4 is shown in FIG. In this embodiment, the luminance Y of the low frequency image 2 Coefficient C over the entire range of 1 , C 2 Since the sum of the two is constant, it is possible to prevent low frequency component contrast reduction at all luminance levels. The other effects are the same as those of the first embodiment. Coefficient C of this example 1 , C 2 Is the luminance Y 2 Since it changes linearly in each range, it can be calculated only by linear calculation. Instead of the look-up tables 13-1 and 13-2 of the first embodiment, two arithmetic units are provided and the coefficient C 1 , C 2 Can be calculated at high speed with a simple calculation.
