Abstract

An article carrier of the top gripping type includes a main panel (20, 116) having a pair of opposed end edges (70, 72, 170, 172), a first fold line (32, 134) extending between said end edges (70, 72, 170, 172), and at least one aperture (44, 144) for receiving an article (A). The aperture (44, 144) is disposed astride the first fold line (32, 134) to interrupt it. A first tab (40, 140) is struck from the main panel (20, 116) and defining at least a part of the aperture (44, 144). The tab (40, 140) is hingeably connected to the main panel (20, 116) so that the tab (40, 140) is displaceable out of the plane of the main panel (20, 116) to operatively engage a part of the article (A) when the article (A) is in the aperture (44, 144). The tab (40, 140) is connected to the main panel (20, 116) by means of a pair of second and third spaced fold lines (60, 62, 160, 162) extending divergently from each other toward one of the end edges (70, 72, 170, 172) so that displacement of the tab (40, 140) out of the plane of the main panel (20, 116) causes the main panel to be folded about the first fold line (32, 134). A stress relieving cut line (64, 164) is provided to extend between the second and third fold lines (60, 62 160, 162) to partially separate the tab (40, 140) from the main panel (20, 116). The cut (64, 164) line is disposed transversely of the first fold line (32, 134) such that the first fold line (32, 134) is interrupted at the cut line (64, 164). <IMAGE>

Description

Each grip tab 40 is provided with three panels 50, 52, and 54 that are sequentially connected along the crease lines 56 and 58, respectively. The end panels 50, 54 are connected to the main panel 20 along fold lines 60, 62, respectively, while the intermediate panel 52 is separated from the main panel 20 by a score line 64. The main panel 20 has a crease line 32 extending between both end edges and interrupted at an intermediate portion, and the crease line 32 is positioned in line with the intermediate panel 52 of each tab 40. Yes. In the assembled state, the panels 50, 52, and 54 are bent along the crease lines 56 and 58 and moved out of the plane, and the main panel 20 is bent together with the crease line 32. One of the center of the three tab openings 44 having an octagonal shape has two flaps 42 arranged at opposite positions.
The handle H is formed along the top panel 16, and the top panel 16 is provided with a pair of semicircular handle tabs 38 arranged at opposing positions. The handle tabs 38 are cut from the top panel 16 and are separated from each other via the crease line 36. The carrier is carried by folding each handle tab 38. That is, the handle tab 38 is bent into the cylindrical carrier, whereby a pair of finger openings are formed on the top panel 16. The handle tab 38 is connected to the top panel 16 along substantially parallel crease lines 74,76. The crease line 36 is disposed substantially parallel to both side edges of the top panel 16 and extends between the crease lines 74 and 76. The portion of the top panel 16 between the crease lines 74, 76 is folded upward at the crease line 36 when the carrier is lifted by the finger opening. The crease line 36 functions to relieve the stress acting on the finger opening portion, thereby reinforcing the handle.
FIG. 2 shows the carrier in a substantially assembled state. This configuration is assembled by bending all the panels one after another and overlaying the panel 22 on the panel 14 to form a cylindrical structure. In this case, the panels 14, 16 are folded at right angles along the crease line 26, and the panels 16, 18, 18, 20, 20, 22 are folded at right angles along the crease lines 28, 30, 34, respectively. Yes. The carrier holds the box-like body shown in FIG. 2 by overlapping the side panels 14 and 22 and connecting them by an adhesive or other appropriate means.
As shown in FIG. 3, the article is inserted through opening 44, which causes grip tab 40 to move out of its normal plane and the edges of grip tab 40 project radially from the article. Abuts the part. When the tab 40 is moved, the main panel 20 is folded along the crease line 32 so that the opening 44 is maximally widened. Further, when the tab 40 is engaged with the neck portion of the bottle, the flexibility of the main panel 20 enhanced by the stress relaxation cut line 64 assists the holding tab 40 in supporting the bottle.
FIG. 4 shows a carrier blank 110 forming a top gripping carrier, which is another embodiment of the present invention made of cardboard or similar foldable sheet material. The blank 110 is provided with a support strip 112 foldably connected to the intermediate strip 114 along the crease line 130, and the strips 112, 114 are overlapped with each other. The intermediate strip 114 is foldably connected to the main panel 116 along the crease line 132, and the strips 112 and 114 are bent to the outside of the surface of the blank 110. The main panel 116 is also foldably connected to the intermediate strip 118 along the fold line 136. The support strip 120 is foldably connected to the intermediate strip 118 along the crease line 138, and the strips 118, 120 overlap each other. The crease line 136 allows the strips 118, 120 to be folded outward from their normal plane.
As shown in FIG. 4, the main panel 116 is formed with three hexagonal tab openings 144 arranged in a line, and grip tabs 140 are provided at both ends of the opening 144. Each grip tab 140 is provided with three panels 150, 152, and 154 that are sequentially connected along the crease lines 156 and 158, respectively. End panels 150 and 154 are connected to main panel 116 along crease lines 160 and 162, respectively, while intermediate panel 152 is separated from main panel 116 by a cut line 164. The main panel 116 includes a crease line 134 that extends between both ends of the main panel 116 and is interrupted at an intermediate portion, and is located on the same line as the intermediate panel 152 of each tab 140. In the assembled state, the panels 150, 152, and 154 are bent along the crease lines 156 and 158 and moved out of the plane, and cooperate with the crease line 134 to fold the main panel 116.
The handle is formed along the support strip 120, and the support strip 120 is provided with a pair of tabs 166 arranged at opposite positions. The carrier is carried by folding each tab 166 inward.
The carrier is assembled by folding the strips 112, 114 along the fold line 130 so as to overlap each other, and folding the strips 118, 120 along the fold line 138 so as to overlap each other. The strips 112, 114 are secured in surface contact with each other by adhesive or other suitable means, thereby forming a single side panel. Similarly, the strips 120, 118 are secured to each other in surface contact to form another side panel. The pair of side panels are bent along the fold lines 132 and 136 so as to be disposed substantially orthogonal to the main panel 116.
In order to fix the article A by the carrier, the article A is inserted through the opening 144. The lower part of the strips 112 and 120 is pushed outward by the inserted article A, and the gap G1 between the lower parts of the strips 112 and 120 is widened. As a result, the gap G2 between the upper portions of the strips 112 and 120 is narrowed, and as a result, the upper edges 250 and 252 that support the article A in the radial direction are strongly pressed against the article A as shown in FIG. Insertion of article A causes tab 140 to move out of its normal plane and the edge of tab 140 abuts the radial protrusion of the article. As the tab 140 moves out of its plane, the main panel 116 is bent along the crease line 134 and the opening 144 is maximized. When the tab 140 engages a radial protrusion, such as a flange on the neck of the bottle, the flexibility of the main panel 116 enhanced by the stress relief cut line 164 assists in supporting the bottle by the tab 140.
The present invention and its preferred embodiments relate to a bottle carrier formed with sufficient rigidity to hold the bottle firmly with some flexibility, thereby being added to the opening tab The load can be better absorbed by the carrier. The blank shape makes it possible to minimize the amount of cardboard required. The carrier can be attached to the bottle manually or by an automated machine. The present invention can be applied not only to the top gripping type carrier but also to various carriers.
