本発明は、通信ネットワークへ接続されるFAXサーバに関するものである。

【従来の技術】
近年、FAXサーバ、メールサーバ、パソコン等を通信ネットワークを用いて相互に接続した通信ネットワークシステムが普及しつつある。このため、通信ネットワークに接続されたFAXサーバは、公衆回線網又はインターネットに接続された専用回線からの受信データを、クライアント毎に配信することができる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、この配信方法では、配信できない受信データは、FAXサーバに記憶されたままの状態となる。つまり、FAXサーバには、配信できない受信データが蓄積されることとなる。その結果、配信できない受信データが大量に蓄積された場合には、通信ネットワーク管理者が蓄積された受信データをどのように処理するかを判断して、適宜処理しなければならなかった。従って、このような事態が発生した場合には、受信データの管理を容易に行うことは困難であった。

本発明は、このような問題点に着目してなされたものであって、その目的は、他のサーバとの間の連携を柔軟に行うことにより、受信データの管理を容易に行うことが可能なFAXサーバを提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記の目的を達成するために、請求項1に記載の発明では、受信データの配信先を決定するとともに、決定した配信先に受信データを配信するFAXサーバにおいて、受信データの配信先を決定できない場合は、通信ネットワーク内の他のサーバを検索する制御手段を備えた。
請求項2に記載の発明では、請求項1に記載のFAXサーバにおいて、前記制御手段は、前記通信ネットワーク内の他のサーバを検索した結果、配信可能なサーバがある場合に、そのサーバに対して前記受信データを転送する。
請求項3に記載の発明では、請求項2に記載のFAXサーバにおいて、前記制御手段は、受信データを前記所定のサーバに転送する際に、該受信データとともに受信データの配信先を決定するための配信先決定条件を前記所定のサーバに転送する。

以下に、本発明に係るFAXサーバの一実施形態について図面を用いて説明する。

図1に示すように、通信ネットワークシステムは、電話回線L1を有するFAXサーバ1、専用回線L2を介してインターネットに接続されたゲートウェイ2、メールサーバ3、複数のパソコン4及び各装置1〜4間を相互に接続するハブ(HUB)5、トランシーバ6、イーサネットケーブル7、AUIケーブル8、ツイストペアケーブル9から構成されている。

FAXサーバ1、ゲートウェイ2、メールサーバ3及びパソコン4は、ツイストペアケーブル9を介してハブ5に接続されている。ハブ5は、AUIケーブル8を介してトランシーバ6に接続されている。トランシーバ6は、イーサネットケーブル7を介して他のトランシーバ6と接続されている。FAXサーバ1、ゲートウェイ2、メールサーバ3及びパソコン4は、ツイストペアケーブル9に接続するためのインターフェースを内蔵している。ハブ5は、ツイストペアケーブル9とAUIケーブル8とを接続するために設けられるとともに、通信ネットワークTの接続において集線装置として機能する。トランシーバ6は、AUIケーブル8とイーサネットケーブル7とを接続するために設けられている。

次に、FAXサーバ1における配信時と転送時との動作について、図4に示すフローチャートを用いて説明する。なお、この動作は、ROM12に記憶されたプログラムに基づき、MPU11の制御により実行される。

さて、FAXサーバ1が、公衆回線網から電話回線L1を介してファクシミリ通信による画データ、又は、インターネットから専用回線L2、ゲートウェイ2及びメールサーバ3を介してFAXサーバ1宛の電子メールが受信されて、画データ又は電子メールが画像メモリ18又はPCカード型メモリ37に記憶されると、図4に示すステップS1においては、画像メモリ18に記憶された画データ又はPCカード型メモリ37に記憶された電子メールの配信先のクライアントが決定される。ここで、配信先決定処理としては、RAM13に記憶されている配信先を決定するための配信先決定条件に基づいて、画データ又は電子メールの配信先が決定される。すなわち、ファクシミリ通信による受信の場合は、配信先決定条件として発信元電話番号やSUB信号で示されるサブアドレス等に基づいて、画データの配信先決定処理が実行される。一方、電子メールの受信の場合は、配信先決定条件としてヘッダや本文中の記載事項に基づいて、電子メールの配信先決定処理が実行される。

ステップS2においては、前記ステップS1において、画データ又は電子メールの配信先が決定されたか否かが判断される。すなわち、FAXサーバ1が受信した画データ又は電子メールが、配信先決定条件に該当しない画データ又は電子メールが受信されることもある。そこで、画データ又は電子メールの配信先が決定されたか否かを判断しているのである。そして、画データ又は電子メールの配信先が決定された場合は、ステップS3に移行する。一方、画データ又は電子メールの配信先が決定されていない場合は、ステップS4に移行する。

(1)FAXサーバ1が受信した画データ又は電子メールが、配信先決定条件に該当しない場合であって、FAXサーバ1に登録されているサーバがある場合は、そのサーバに対して画データ又は電子メールが転送される。このとき、転送対象が画データの場合は、配信先決定条件としての発信元電話番号やSUB信号で示されるサブアドレス等が画データとともに登録されているサーバに転送される。一方、転送対象が電子メールの場合は、配信先決定条件としてのヘッダ等が本文とともに登録されているサーバに転送される。その結果、登録されているサーバにおいて、画データ又は電子メールが配信先決定条件に該当する場合には、その画データ又は電子メールが該当する配信先に対して配信されることとなる。従って、他のサーバとの間の連携を柔軟に行うことにより、受信データの管理を容易に行うことができる。よって、柔軟な通信ネットワークを構築することもできる。
