Description
【0001】
【0003】
この改善策として、誘電率異方性が負であるネマティック液晶を用いたDAP(Deformation of Aligned Phase)方式の表示素子が検討されている。
I=I0 Sin2 2θSin2 (πR/λ)
R=dΔnSin2 φ(V)

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition used for a DAP-type liquid crystal display element that controls the birefringence of a vertically aligned liquid crystal by applying an electric field.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The liquid crystal display elements that have been commercialized so far generally have an operation method such as TN or STN using nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy. However, since this operation method uses the twist of liquid crystal molecules, the twist of the liquid crystal molecules changes depending on the viewing direction of the display element. As a result, there is a drawback that the contrast changes depending on the viewing angle.
[0003]
As an improvement measure, a DAP (Deformation of Aligned Phase) type display element using a nematic liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy has been studied. In this method, the liquid crystal elements are arranged substantially perpendicular to the glass substrate in the initial alignment of liquid crystals (below the threshold voltage). For this reason, the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules is the same regardless of the viewing direction, and the feature is that the viewing angle dependency of contrast is small. Under such a background, a DAP type display element has been studied.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In order to use a DAP liquid crystal for a display element, it is required that the steep threshold characteristic, that is, the steepness γ (V90 / V10) is small. V90 is a voltage at which 90% transmittance is obtained, and V10 is a voltage at which 10% transmittance is obtained.
[0005]
In order to realize an active matrix driven projection type liquid crystal display using this liquid crystal, a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range is required. This liquid crystal phase temperature range is generally said to be about -30 to 70 degrees.
[0006]
The transmitted light intensity I of the DAP method is
I = I 0 Sin 2 2θSin 2 (πR / λ)
It is represented by Here, I 0 is the incident light intensity, θ is the angle between the incident polarization direction and the oscillation direction of the normal light in the liquid crystal cell, and λ is the wavelength of the incident light. R represents the retardation amount of the liquid crystal cell, and depends on the cell thickness d, the refractive index anisotropy Δn of the liquid crystal, and the tilt angle φ (V) of the major axis of the liquid crystal molecule,
R = dΔnSin 2 φ (V)
It is represented by
[0007]
Thus, in order to improve the steepness γ, it is necessary to increase the cell thickness d and increase the refractive index anisotropy Δn of the liquid crystal.
[0008]
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition for use in a DAP liquid crystal display element having a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range that can be applied to a projection type liquid crystal display device and having a good temperature characteristic of steepness γ. The purpose is to do.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The liquid crystal material of the present invention is a nematic liquid crystal material having a negative dielectric anisotropy, which is a DAP type liquid crystal material, and has a large refractive index anisotropy and an NI point (nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature). This can be achieved by mixing high Tran derivatives.
[0010]
[Action]
According to the present invention, by mixing the tolan derivative, the phase transition temperature of the nematic phase can be increased and the refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal material can be increased. As a result, the temperature characteristic of the steepness γ can be improved. Such a liquid crystal composition can be used for a direct-view type liquid crystal display device using a driving method such as active matrix driving and a projection type liquid crystal display device.
[0011]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In the following description, a trans liquid crystal having the following structure will be described as an example.
[0012]
[Chemical formula 2]
[0013]
(First embodiment)
The refractive index anisotropy Δn of the mixture when nematic liquid crystal A (MX95405 manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc.) is mixed with Tolan liquid crystal is shown in FIG. In the figure, the horizontal axis indicates the mixing ratio of the Tran liquid crystal in the mixture when the Tran liquid crystal represented by Chemical Formula 2 is mixed with the nematic liquid crystal A, that is, the concentration in weight%, and the vertical axis indicates the refractive index of the mixture. Anisotropy Δn is shown. FIG. 2 shows that the refractive index anisotropy Δn can be increased by mixing the Tran liquid crystal.
[0014]
Moreover, the result of having measured the transition temperature (TNI) to an isotropic phase is shown in FIG. In the figure, the horizontal axis represents the mixing ratio of Tran liquid crystals in a mixture obtained by mixing nematic liquid crystal A with Tran liquid crystals represented by Chemical Formula 2, and the vertical axis represents the transition temperature of the mixture to the isotropic phase. From FIG. 3, the transition temperature TNI to the isotropic phase can be increased by mixing the Tran liquid crystal.
[0015]
Therefore, by mixing the Tran liquid crystal, the refractive index anisotropy Δn can be increased and the transition temperature TNI to the isotropic phase can be increased. This shows that the temperature characteristic of the steepness γ can be improved.
[0016]
Next, a liquid crystal panel was prepared using the liquid crystal of this mixture, and the relationship between voltage and brightness (VT curve) was measured.
[0017]
FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a manufactured liquid crystal panel. In the figure, 1 is a glass substrate, 2 is a reflective film of Al, 3 is a transparent electrode, 4 is an alignment film, and 5 is a liquid crystal. The liquid crystal panel was constituted by a reflective type in which the

A measurement system for measuring the reflected light of the produced liquid crystal is shown in FIG. In FIG. 19, 101 is a laser light source, 102 is a polarization beam splitter, 103 is a liquid crystal panel, 104 is a detector, 105 is an amplifier, 106 is a driving power source, and 107 is a measuring instrument.
The laser beam emitted from the

[0020]
According to the comparison of each figure, the steepness γ at the rise of the output level deteriorates as the temperature of the liquid crystal panel rises in FIG. It can be seen that the characteristics can be improved.
[0021]
(Second Embodiment)
FIG. 9 shows the result of measuring the refractive index anisotropy Δn by mixing the above-mentioned Tran liquid crystal with nematic liquid crystal B (MJ94196 manufactured by Merck) different from the above-described nematic liquid crystal A.
[0022]
FIG. 9 shows the refractive index anisotropy Δn when the nematic liquid crystal B is mixed with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 wt% of the Tran liquid crystal. In FIG. 9, the horizontal axis represents the mixing ratio of the Tran liquid crystal in the mixture obtained by mixing the nematic liquid crystal B with the Tran liquid crystal, and the vertical axis represents the magnitude of the refractive index anisotropy Δn of the mixture. From FIG. 9, it can be seen that the refractive index anisotropy Δn can be increased by mixing the Tran liquid crystal as in the first embodiment.
[0023]
Next, a liquid crystal panel as shown in FIG. 1 was prepared using nematic liquid crystal B, and the results of measuring the VT curve in the same manner are shown in FIGS. FIG. 10 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal B is 0%. FIG. 11 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal B is 5%. FIG. 12 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal B is 10%. FIG. 13 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal B is 15%.
[0024]
10 shows the measurement results when the temperature conditions of the liquid crystal panel are 20 ° C., 40 ° C., 60 ° C., and 75 ° C., and for FIG. 11 to FIG. 13, the temperature conditions of the liquid crystal panel are 20 ° C. and 40 ° C. , 60 ° C., 80 ° C. Measurement results are shown.
[0025]
Further, the output level T is also illustrated with the maximum level similarly measured as 100%. Comparing FIG. 10 to FIG. 13, it can be seen that the temperature characteristics of the steepness γ can be improved by including the Tran liquid crystal as shown in FIGS. 11, 12, and 13, compared to FIG. 10 in which the Tran liquid crystal is not mixed.
[0026]
(Third embodiment)
Similarly to the first and second embodiments, a liquid crystal panel is prepared by mixing the above-mentioned Tran liquid crystal with nematic liquid crystal C (EN-35 manufactured by Chisso Corporation) different from nematic liquid crystals A to B, and a VT curve is obtained. It was measured. FIG. 14 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal C is 0%. FIG. 15 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal C is 10%. FIG. 16 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal C is 20%.
[0027]
Further, as a result of measuring the isotropic phase transition temperature TNI, the isotropic phase transition temperature TNI of the nematic liquid crystal not mixed with the Tran liquid crystal is 62 ° C., and the mixing ratio of the Tran liquid crystal is 10%. The isotropic phase transition temperature TNI is 85 ° C. when TNI is 75 ° C. and the mixing ratio of Tran liquid crystal is 20%, and it has been found that the transition temperature to the isotropic phase can be improved as in the first embodiment. .
[0028]
From the above results, it can be seen that the temperature characteristics of the steepness γ can be improved by including the Tran liquid crystal as shown in FIGS. 15 and 16 as compared with FIG. 14 in which the Tran liquid crystal is not mixed.
[0029]
(Fourth embodiment)
Furthermore, the temperature characteristics of the steepness γ could be improved in the same manner when the above-mentioned Tolan liquid crystal was mixed with nematic liquid crystal D (Merck 94-1122) different from the above-described nematic liquid crystal.
[0030]
FIG. 17 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal D is 0%. FIG. 18 is a VT curve when the mixing ratio of the trans liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal D is 15%. Comparing FIGS. 17 and 18, it can be seen that the temperature characteristic of the steepness γ can be improved by mixing the Tran liquid crystal rather than mixing the Tran liquid crystal.

In the present example, the above-described Tone liquid crystal of
