【0037】
【0038】
相系列
30℃−SmCA*−69℃−SmA−80℃−ISO
自発分極 229nC/cm2

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display element using an antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC, Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal) and a driving method thereof, and more particularly, to an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element capable of gradation display and a driving method thereof.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A ferroelectric liquid crystal display device using a ferroelectric liquid crystal has attracted attention in that a high-speed response and a wide viewing angle can be obtained as compared with a TN mode liquid crystal display device using a nematic liquid crystal.
As a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element, a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element using a ferroelectric liquid crystal and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element using an antiferroelectric liquid crystal are known.
The antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element displays an image by utilizing the stability of the alignment state of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal.
[0003]
More specifically, the antiferroelectric liquid crystal has three stable states in the orientation of liquid crystal molecules. (1) When a voltage equal to or higher than the first threshold is applied to the liquid crystal, the polarity of the applied voltage changes. Accordingly, the liquid crystal molecules are oriented in a first ferroelectric phase arranged in a first direction or a second ferroelectric phase arranged in a second direction, and (2) a second ferroelectric phase lower than the first threshold value. When a voltage equal to or less than the threshold value is applied, the first and second ferroelectric phases are oriented in an antiferroelectric phase in a different arrangement state. By setting the direction of the transmission axis of a pair of polarizing plates arranged on both sides of the liquid crystal display element with reference to the optical axis in the antiferroelectric phase, the light transmittance is controlled by the applied voltage to display an image. be able to.
[0004]
The antiferroelectric liquid crystal was oriented in the first or second ferroelectric phase or the antiferroelectric phase within the range between the first and second threshold values even when the applied voltage was changed. Maintain state. That is, it has a memory property. A conventional antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device is driven by a simple matrix utilizing this memory property.
[0005]
The memory property of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal is determined by the voltage at which the liquid crystal undergoes a phase transition from the first or second ferroelectric phase to the antiferroelectric phase and the phase transition from the antiferroelectric phase to the first or second ferroelectric phase. It is determined by the voltage difference from the applied voltage. The larger the voltage difference, the higher the memory property of the alignment state. That is, the greater the hysteresis of the optical characteristics, the higher the memory property.
[0006]
Therefore, in a conventional anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal display element driven by a simple matrix, a liquid crystal having a large voltage difference is used as the anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal.
[0007]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, a conventional antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device using an antiferroelectric liquid crystal having a high memory property cannot arbitrarily control light transmittance. That is, the control of the display gradation is almost impossible, and the gradation display cannot be realized.
[0008]
The present invention has been made in view of the above situation, and has as its object to provide an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device capable of realizing a clear gradation display.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, a liquid crystal display device according to a first aspect of the present invention includes:
One substrate in which a plurality of pixel electrodes and active elements connected to the pixel electrodes are arranged in a matrix , and the surface of one alignment film formed so as to cover the pixel electrodes is subjected to an alignment treatment ,
A common electrode opposed to the pixel electrode, and the other substrate on which the other alignment film covering the common electrode and having its surface subjected to an alignment process is formed;
A liquid crystal layer having an intermolecular force smaller than the alignment regulating force of the alignment film and forming a chiral smectic CA phase in a bulk state .
The liquid crystal layer forms a ferri phase between the one substrate and the other substrate in an electric field-free state in which no voltage is applied between the pixel electrode and the common electrode, by an alignment regulating force of the alignment film. , an electric field application state in which a voltage is applied between the common electrode and the pixel electrode, to form a mixed phase and intermediate phase oriented ferroelectric phase and other states by the electric field are mixed,
It is characterized by the following.
[0010]
The liquid crystal used in this liquid crystal display element shows a ferri phase when no electric field is applied, and shows a mixed phase when an electric field is applied. In the state where no electric field is applied, the liquid crystal is in the ferri phase, and a minute region composed of liquid crystal molecules oriented in the first direction and another minute region composed of liquid crystal molecules oriented in the second direction are mixed. However, these two micro regions are smaller than the wavelength level of visible light, and a large number of micro regions are mixed at almost the same ratio. Therefore, the director of the liquid crystal layer is directed to the normal direction of the layer of the liquid crystal layer structure. Become.
On the other hand, when a voltage is applied, the liquid crystal molecules oriented in the first or second direction behave in a cone and behave in the second or first direction according to the polarity of the applied voltage ( Flip). Further, some of the liquid crystal molecules are in an intermediate state in which the liquid crystal molecules are tilted with respect to the substrate. Therefore, the liquid crystal exhibits a mixed phase in which a liquid crystal molecule in a ferroelectric phase and a liquid crystal molecule in an intermediate state aligned with a tilt with respect to the substrate are mixed when a voltage is applied. In this mixed phase, the ratio of the liquid crystal molecules in the ferroelectric phase and the average alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules in a state of being tilted with respect to the substrate surface continuously change in accordance with the applied voltage.
Therefore, the liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal exhibiting the antiferroelectricity can display an image at an arbitrary gradation by continuously changing the display gradation.
[0011]
The liquid crystal of the intermediate phase includes, for example, a liquid crystal in which liquid crystal molecules are arranged with a tilt with respect to the main surfaces of the one and the other substrates.
Further, the liquid crystal layer is made of, for example, a liquid crystal made of a liquid crystal material in which an alignment state of an intermediate phase is formed by moving liquid crystal molecules along a cone drawn by molecules of a chiral smectic CA phase by application of an electric field. Be composed.
[0012]
In order to achieve the above object, a liquid crystal display device according to a second aspect of the present invention comprises:
An electrode, and one substrate on which one alignment film whose surface is subjected to an alignment treatment to cover the electrode is formed;
An electrode opposed to the electrode, and the other substrate on which the other alignment film whose surface is subjected to an alignment treatment to cover the electrode is formed;
A liquid crystal material having an intermolecular force smaller than the alignment regulating force by the alignment film and forming an antiferroelectric phase arranged and drawn in a double helical structure in a bulk state is sealed between the substrates, Liquid crystal molecules forming a smectic phase of the liquid crystal material include a liquid crystal layer having spontaneous polarization,
The liquid crystal layer is a liquid crystal between the one substrate and the other substrate, in which no helical structure is applied in the absence of an electric field, the helical structure is unwound , and the liquid crystal is oriented in a first direction by the alignment regulating force of the alignment film. A ferri-phase in which molecules and liquid crystal molecules oriented in the second direction coexist is formed, and in a state where a sufficiently large electric field is applied, the liquid crystal molecules are oriented in the first direction or the second direction depending on the polarity. A liquid crystal molecule oriented in the first direction, a liquid crystal molecule oriented in the second direction, and a liquid crystal molecule oriented in the second direction by the electric field when an intermediate voltage is applied. and the liquid crystal molecules oriented in a state of having a slope forming a mixed phase of mixed-to the behavior to the main surface of the one and the other substrate along the cone traced by,
It is characterized by the following.
[0013]
Also in this configuration, when a voltage is applied between the electrodes, a mixed phase is formed in the liquid crystal layer, the ratio of the liquid crystal molecules in the ferroelectric phase and the average of the liquid crystal molecules in a state of being tilted with respect to the substrate surface. The typical orientation direction changes continuously according to the applied voltage. Therefore, an image can be displayed at an arbitrary gradation by continuously changing the display gradation.
[0014]
The mixed phase formed in the liquid crystal layer is obtained by using a liquid crystal material that forms a chiral smectic CA phase in a bulk state and has a large phase transition precursor phenomenon when a phase transition from an antiferroelectric phase to a ferroelectric phase occurs. Can be
That is, the liquid crystal forming a chiral smectic CA phase in a bulk state receives an alignment regulating force due to the alignment treatment of the alignment film in a state where the liquid crystal is sealed between the one substrate and the other substrate, and the intermolecular force of the liquid crystal. The liquid crystal that is going to be oriented to the antiferroelectric phase by the above-mentioned method has an orientation regulating force by the above-mentioned orientation treatment larger than the intermolecular force, and the liquid crystal layer thickness is equal to or smaller than the helical pitch of the chiral smectic CA phase. Because of its small size, it is oriented to the unwound ferriphase.
When a voltage is applied between the opposing electrodes, the liquid crystal having a large phase transition precursor phenomenon has a small gap between the phase transition energies of the antiferroelectric phase and the ferroelectric phase. Liquid crystal molecules are generated that move (tilt) along a small cone and align in an intermediate state. Therefore, the director of the liquid crystal layer changes continuously, and gradation display becomes possible.
[0017]
Further, a liquid crystal display device according to a third aspect of the present invention includes:
An electrode, and one substrate on which one alignment film whose surface is subjected to an alignment treatment to cover the electrode is formed;
The other substrate, which is disposed to face the one substrate, has an electrode facing the electrode, and the other substrate on which the other alignment film whose surface is subjected to an alignment process is formed to cover the electrode ,
A liquid crystal material having an intermolecular force smaller than the alignment regulating force by the alignment film and forming an antiferroelectric phase arranged and drawn in a double helical structure in a bulk state is sealed between the substrates, The liquid crystal molecules forming the smectic phase of the liquid crystal material have spontaneous polarization, and between the one substrate and the other substrate, in a non-electric field state where no voltage is applied between the electrodes facing each other, the helical structure has A liquid crystal layer formed by melting and forming a ferri phase in which liquid crystal molecules oriented in a first direction and liquid crystal molecules oriented in a second direction are mixed at an equal ratio by an alignment regulating force of the alignment film. A liquid crystal cell comprising:
By applying a voltage between the electrode of the one substrate and the electrode of the other substrate, an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer to mix the ferriphase and the intermediate layer oriented in another state. A driving circuit that generates a phase and controls the director of the liquid crystal layer by controlling the voltage to perform gradation display.
It is characterized by comprising.
[0018]
In this configuration, the driving circuit applies an electric field to the liquid crystal layer in the ferri-phase in a state where no voltage is applied, thereby tilting the liquid crystal molecules in the ferroelectric phase with respect to the ratio of the liquid crystal molecules and the substrate surface. A mixed phase in which the aligned liquid crystal molecules are mixed is formed. The average alignment direction of the liquid crystal in the mixed phase changes continuously according to the applied voltage. Therefore, an image can be displayed at an arbitrary gradation by continuously changing the display gradation.
[0020]
In this configuration as well, the drive circuit applies the electric field to the liquid crystal layer in the ferri phase in the state where no voltage is applied, thereby tilting the liquid crystal molecules in the ferroelectric phase and the substrate surface. To form a mixed phase in which the aligned liquid crystal molecules are mixed. The average alignment direction of the liquid crystal in the mixed phase changes continuously according to the applied voltage. Therefore, an image can be displayed at an arbitrary gradation by continuously changing the display gradation.
[0021]
The drive circuit moves the liquid crystal molecules along the cone drawn by the molecules of the chiral smectic CA phase by applying an electric field, for example, thereby forming an alignment state of the intermediate phase. Further, the drive circuit forms a mixed phase in which the ferroelectric liquid crystal and the intermediate liquid crystal in which the liquid crystal molecules are arranged with a tilt with respect to the main surfaces of the one and the other substrates are mixed.
[0022]
Further, a method for driving a liquid crystal display element according to a fourth aspect of the present invention includes:
An electrode , one substrate on which one alignment film whose surface is subjected to an alignment treatment is formed so as to cover the electrode, and an electrode disposed to face the one substrate and facing the electrode; and Has an intermolecular force smaller than the alignment regulating force of the alignment film between the other alignment film and the other alignment film having an alignment treatment applied to the surface thereof. A liquid crystal material forming an antiferroelectric phase arranged in a double helical structure is sealed between the substrates, and liquid crystal molecules forming a smectic phase of the liquid crystal material have spontaneous polarization, and the one Between the substrate and the other substrate, in the absence of an electric field in which no voltage is applied between the opposing electrodes, the helical structure is unwound , and the liquid crystal molecules oriented in the first direction by the alignment regulating force of the alignment film. And the liquid crystal molecules oriented in the second direction are equal The liquid crystal layer to form a ferrimagnetic phase coexist in case sealed,
By applying a voltage between the electrode of the one substrate and the electrode of the other substrate, an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer to mix the ferri phase and the intermediate phase oriented in another state. Generating a phase to control the director of the liquid crystal layer by controlling the voltage to display halftones;
It is characterized by the following.
[0023]
Also in this method, a display phase can be continuously changed by forming a mixed phase in the liquid crystal layer and continuously changing the average alignment direction of the liquid crystal in the mixed phase according to the applied voltage.
[0024]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION

[0040]
The liquid crystal having such a configuration and physical properties has a small barrier of potential energy between the antiferroelectric phase and the ferroelectric phase, and the order of the antiferroelectric phase is more easily disordered than the ordinary antiferroelectric liquid crystal. The feature is that the transition precursor phenomenon is large. The phase transition precursor phenomenon is shown in FIG. 3 before the phase transition from the antiferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase occurs when the electric field intensity applied to the liquid crystal molecules forming the antiferroelectric phase is gradually increased. This refers to a phenomenon in which the transmittance of a liquid crystal element in an optical arrangement increases, and an increase in the transmittance means that liquid crystal molecules behave before phase transition. The behavior of the liquid crystal molecules before the phase transition means that the barrier of the potential energy between the antiferroelectric phase and the ferroelectric phase is small.

Here, the liquid crystal molecules have an intermolecular force for maintaining the antiferroelectric phase, while the
For this reason, when the alignment control force due to the interface effect is smaller than the intermolecular force for maintaining the antiferroelectric phase of the liquid crystal molecules, the liquid crystal maintains the antiferroelectric phase as in the case of the bulk. I do. When the alignment regulating force is sufficiently larger than the intermolecular force, the liquid crystal molecules form a ferri phase. When the orientation regulating force is larger than the intermolecular force and smaller than the orientation regulating force for forming the ferri phase, a mixed phase described later is formed.
[0044]
In this embodiment, the intermolecular force of the liquid crystal is relatively small, and the liquid crystal molecules receive a relatively large alignment control force due to the alignment treatment of the
[0045]
In the ferri phase, as shown in the perspective view in FIG. 5 and the projection onto the substrate plane in FIG. 6, the liquid crystal molecules have their long axes oriented in either the
[0046]
For this reason, as shown in FIG. 7, the liquid crystal molecules aligned in the first direction (in the first alignment state) and the liquid crystal molecules aligned in the second direction (the second Liquid crystal molecules (in an aligned state) are mixed, and the director (average direction of the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules) is almost aligned with the normal direction (or

For this reason, in the state where the voltage is applied, as shown in FIGS. 8B and 8C, the adjacent liquid crystal molecules have the ferroelectric phase in which the
Further, when the applied voltage is increased, the number of the liquid crystal molecules arranged in the
In this specification, the state in which the intermediate voltage is applied is called a mixed phase in the sense that the first and second ferroelectric phases and the liquid crystal molecules in the intermediate alignment state are mixed.
[0050]
FIG. 10 schematically shows a state in which the
[0051]
In this mixed phase, the ratio between the liquid crystal molecules in the first and second ferroelectric phases and the liquid crystal molecules in the intermediate state, and the average alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules in the intermediate state (the alignment direction projected on the main surface of the substrate) is , Continuously changes according to the polarity and value of the applied voltage.
For this reason, as shown in FIGS. 8A to 8E, the director of the liquid crystal (the average orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules) changes between the
[0052]
Therefore, the optical characteristics of the liquid crystal display element having the above-described configuration have no flat portion near the applied voltage of 0 V, and the optical characteristics continuously and smoothly change as the absolute value of the applied voltage increases. Further, the transmittance curve is also symmetric with respect to the polarity of the applied voltage. When a voltage whose absolute value is equal to or higher than the saturation voltage is applied, the transmittance is saturated. Furthermore, the hysteresis is very small.
[0053]
As an example, a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal having a skeletal structure represented by
As a comparative example, FIG. 11B shows the relationship between the transmittance and the applied voltage of a liquid crystal display element (Comparative Example 1) in which a liquid crystal is sealed in a state where the cell gap is 5 μm and a spiral structure drawn by liquid crystal molecules is maintained. .
[0054]
The characteristics in FIGS. 11A and 11B are obtained by applying a triangular wave between the opposing
As shown in FIG. 11A, the applied voltage-transmittance characteristic of the liquid crystal display element of Example 1 does not have a definite threshold value, the transmittance changes continuously, and the polarity of the applied voltage varies. Symmetric, with very low hysteresis and high contrast. Therefore, it can be understood that the transmittance with respect to the applied voltage is almost uniquely determined, the intermediate gradation can be stably displayed, and the image with high contrast can be stably displayed.
[0055]
On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 11B, in Comparative Example 1, the interaction between the
[0056]
The fact that the liquid crystal molecules behave as described above according to the applied voltage in the liquid crystal display element of Example 1 is shown in, for example, a conoscopic image shown in FIG. 12 and FIGS. 13A to 13C. It can be determined from the enlarged view of the display surface shown in FIG.
[0057]
FIG. 12 shows a conoscopic image of a liquid crystal material in a bulk state. In this figure, two melanops (bright spots) are generated in a direction substantially perpendicular to the electric field E, and are almost symmetrical. This indicates that the liquid crystal molecules are an antiferroelectric phase having a double helical structure.

As a comparative example, FIG. 15B shows the relationship between the applied voltage and the transmittance of a liquid crystal display device (Comparative Example 2) having the same configuration as that of Example 2 except that the cell gap was 5 microns.
[0067]
The characteristics of FIGS. 15A and 15B are obtained by applying a triangular wave between the opposing
As shown in FIG. 15A, the applied voltage-transmittance characteristic of the liquid crystal display element of Example 2 does not have a definite threshold value, the transmittance changes continuously, and the polarity of the applied voltage changes. Symmetric, with small hysteresis and high contrast. On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 15B, in Comparative Example 2, the applied voltage-transmittance characteristic has a threshold value and the hysteresis is large, so that a smooth applied voltage-transmittance characteristic cannot be obtained. Also, the contrast is small.
[0068]
From FIGS. 15A and 15B, it can be confirmed that the liquid crystal display element of this embodiment has excellent gradation display capability.

FIG. 17 shows the change in transmittance at that time. From FIG. 17, it can be understood that an arbitrary gray scale can be stably displayed by using the driving method of FIG.
