For a WO disk, as in a normal CD player, the reflected light from the pit row of the EFM signal is detected, tracking and track search are performed, and recording signals are reproduced. Then, in an unrecorded CD-WO disc, tracking and track search are performed by detecting reflected light from the pregroove carved in the waveform.

The recorded contents are sequentially written as EFM signals from the top position of the PMA area. Such a CD-W
When the recording of the O disk is completed, a TOC is created from the recorded contents of the PMA area, and is recorded in the TOC area at once as an EFM signal.

In the WO device, it takes a long time because the disc type is determined by reading the EFM signal recorded in the TOC or PMA and based on the contents thereof. That is, the EFM signal reading has to be continued for at least several seconds due to a disc scratch or the like, and there is a drawback that the time required for reading the EFM signal is long, and the disc type determination is long.

In a CD-WO apparatus in which tracking and track search are performed on an unrecorded CD-WO disc by detecting reflected light from a pre-groove, first, the laser spot of the optical pickup is set to the TO
It moves to the position C and detects whether it is in the state of total reflection during a predetermined frame, and when there is an EFM signal instead of the state of total reflection, C
When the disc is determined to be D or a recorded CD-WO disc, the discriminating operation is completed, and when the disc is in the total reflection state for a predetermined frame at the TOC position of the disc, the laser spot of the optical pickup is moved to the top position of the PMA of the disc. To determine whether the disk is in a total reflection state for a predetermined frame. If the disk is in a total reflection state for a predetermined frame, it is determined that the disk is an unrecorded CD-WO disk.
If there is an M signal, the disc is determined to be a CD-WO disc in the middle of recording.
