かんな屑を紙封筒に入れた点火部材は容易に点火でき、直に縦長角柱状木材に着火する。これらは木材の端材、木屑で簡単に制作することができる。木材はヒノキ、スギ、ヒバ、アカマツ、クリ、ケヤキ、サクラ、ナラなどがある。ヒノキは煙も少なく、良く燃えて使い易い。スギは黒い煙が多くでて最適でない。
紐は麻紐が最適であるが、綿などのセロース系のものが良い。
