2. Description of the Related Art Gravure printing is capable of changing the area and depth of halftone dots on a plate, and therefore has excellent color tone reproducibility of printed matter, and is used for high quality printed matter and the like. Recently, the trend of printing paper is shifting from glossy to matte. This seems to be because users have come to prefer a surface with a noticeable glare and difficult to read characters or the like to a gentle one with a gentle surface. In addition, demands for better print finish are increasing in picture portions such as photographs. Under such circumstances, matte coated paper for gravure printing has recently come to be used in order to obtain legibility of the text and sharpness of the pattern.

[0003] In gravure printing, ink is first applied to the entire plate, and then the doctor removes ink other than the image area with a doctor.
In this method, the ink accumulated in the recesses is transferred to paper under pressure. For this reason, the smoothness of the paper surface is required for smooth and uniform transfer of the ink in the concave portion to the paper. The smoothness referred to here is smoothness in a state compressed under printing pressure, and is also called so-called dynamic smoothness,
Cushioning properties are required. In addition, oil absorption is required to improve the transferability of the ink.

A number of patents relating to matte coated paper for gravure have been filed so far, specifying the pigment formulation and the like (JP-A-59-199897 and JP-A-1-118695). In addition, the medium base paper using mechanical pulp was used to provide cushioning properties, and it was a matte coated paper without a high-grade feeling. On the other hand, in the case of base paper made of bleached chemical pulp alone which gives a high-grade feel, there is no matte coated paper for gravure printing which is apt to cause misdots because it cannot provide cushioning properties and is sufficiently satisfactory.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In view of such circumstances, the present invention aims to improve the gravure suitability of a matte coated paper for gravure printing by using a specific spindle-shaped light calcium carbonate as a pigment component of the coated paper. The pulp component is exposed to a coating solution containing 70% by weight or more of calcium carbonate combined with heavy calcium carbonate, and more than 40% by weight of the mixed calcium carbonate is a specific spindle-shaped light calcium carbonate. Base paper is coated, dried and smoothed to reduce white paper gloss and misdot ratio, increase whiteness and have a high-grade appearance. Even if the opacity of the base paper is reduced, there is no problem of print strikethrough. It has been found that coated paper for gravure printing is obtained.

Means for Solving the Problems The present invention comprises, as a pigment component of coated paper, at least 70% by weight of a mixed pigment of spindle-shaped light calcium carbonate and heavy calcium carbonate having a major axis of 4.0 μm or less and a minor axis of 1.0 μm or less; Further, the pulp component is exposed to a coating liquid in which at least 40% by weight of the mixed calcium carbonate is spindle-shaped light calcium carbonate, coated on 100% by weight chemical pulp base paper, and dried, and the white paper gloss (JISP8142 method) is 40%. The present invention relates to a matte coated paper for gravure printing characterized by performing a smoothing treatment as described below.

The proportion of the mixed pigment of light calcium carbonate and heavy calcium carbonate used in the present invention is 70% of the total pigment component.
It is desirable that the content be at least 80% by weight, more preferably at least 80% by weight. The mixing ratio of the spindle-shaped light calcium carbonate and the heavy calcium carbonate is preferably at least 40% by weight, more preferably at least 50% by weight, based on the mixture. The ratio of the mixed pigment of spindle-shaped light calcium carbonate and heavy calcium carbonate to the total pigment component is 70.
When the amount is less than 10% by weight, when the surface is highly smoothed in order to suppress the miss dot ratio, the gloss of the white paper increases, and it is difficult to obtain a matte surface. If the proportion of the spindle-shaped light calcium carbonate in the mixed calcium carbonate is less than 40% by weight, the opacity and the like are reduced, and print-through becomes a problem.

Further, the base paper has a problem that when mechanical pulp is blended, the whiteness becomes low, and the sense of quality cannot be obtained. JP-A-59-199897 specifies heavy calcium carbonate as a pigment component in an amount of 50% by weight or more. However, since base paper containing a high yield pulp is used, the opacity of a coating layer is reduced. Even though there is no worry about print strikethrough, there is no luxury. Japanese Unexamined Patent Publication (Kokai) No. Hei 1-186995 discloses that gravure printing suitability is obtained by using heavy calcium carbonate having a specific particle size and talc. If the particle size is not specified, the effect does not appear. That is, even if the same light calcium carbonate is used, the columnar one has a high glossiness of white paper, and does not become a mat coated paper. Further, the particle diameter is 4.0 μm in the long diameter.
If the diameter is too large and the diameter is over 1.0 μm, the opacity becomes low, and there is a problem of print strikethrough.

As is clear from Table 1, Examples 1 and 2 have low blank gloss, high opacity and whiteness, and have excellent levels of misdot ratio. On the other hand, Comparative Example 1 has a high white paper gloss and a high misdot ratio, and is inferior in opacity. Comparative Example 2 is not preferable because of high glossiness of white paper. Comparative Example 3
There is no problem in glossiness of white paper, opacity, and misdot ratio, but it is inferior in whiteness and does not have a high-class feeling.
