【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、MPEG−4に対
応する動きベクトルの符号化に関し、特に動画像の符号
化過程で全体ビット率を減少させるに適した動画像の動
きベクトルの符号化方法に関する。

【従来の技術】現在標準化作業が進んでいるMPEG−
4の概略的な内容は以下の通りである。MPEG−4
は、今まで適用されてきたMPEG−1、MPEG−2
の機能とは全く異なる機能を追求するもので、通信、コ
ンピューター、放送等の技術領域が融合されてマルチ化
される現在の傾向に対応するためのものである。すなわ
ち、独立的に技術の革新を成し遂げた種々の技術領域を
全て包括できる融合技術領域の機能の実現、及びその応
用分野の開拓を目標とする。MPEG−4が追求する方
向は、超低ビット率でAV符号化を可能にする技術、そ
して従来とは全く異なる新たな機能の実現、等に大別さ
れる。ここで、超低ビット率でAV符号化を可能にする
べく試みられている第1の方法としては、MPEG−
1、2で使われているDCT変換技術を使用せず、全く
新たな符号化技術として、例えばブロック境界での歪み
が少なく且つ符号化効率が高いウエーブレット符号化方
式等をあげられる。そして、第2の方法としては、MP
EG−1、2での符号化がマクロブロック単位のモーシ
ョン補償を行うことに相違して、アフィン変換などの他
の方式でモーション補償を行うことがあげられる。第3
の方法として、境界内符号化(contour coding)とオブジ
ェクト指向符号化方式を含む領域基盤符号化(region b
ased coding)をあげられる。第4の方法として、1/1
000以上の圧縮率を実現可能なフラクタル符号化方式
をあげられる。
4の概略的な内容は以下の通りである。MPEG−4
は、今まで適用されてきたMPEG−1、MPEG−2
の機能とは全く異なる機能を追求するもので、通信、コ
ンピューター、放送等の技術領域が融合されてマルチ化
される現在の傾向に対応するためのものである。すなわ
ち、独立的に技術の革新を成し遂げた種々の技術領域を
全て包括できる融合技術領域の機能の実現、及びその応
用分野の開拓を目標とする。MPEG−4が追求する方
向は、超低ビット率でAV符号化を可能にする技術、そ
して従来とは全く異なる新たな機能の実現、等に大別さ
れる。ここで、超低ビット率でAV符号化を可能にする
べく試みられている第1の方法としては、MPEG−
1、2で使われているDCT変換技術を使用せず、全く
新たな符号化技術として、例えばブロック境界での歪み
が少なく且つ符号化効率が高いウエーブレット符号化方
式等をあげられる。そして、第2の方法としては、MP
EG−1、2での符号化がマクロブロック単位のモーシ
ョン補償を行うことに相違して、アフィン変換などの他
の方式でモーション補償を行うことがあげられる。第3

MPEG−4で具現できるように推進する新たな機能に
は以下の8つをあげることができる。符号化効率の改
善、内容に合わせる可変分解能力(scalability)、内容
操作とビット列の編集、エラー耐性の改善、マルチメデ
ィア・データベースのアクセス、複数の同期データの符
号化、自然データと合成データのハイブリッド符号化、
超低ビット率でのランダム・アクセス性の改善、等であ
る。
MPEG−4で具現できるように推進する新たな機能に
は以下の8つをあげることができる。符号化効率の改
善、内容に合わせる可変分解能力(scalability)、内容
操作とビット列の編集、エラー耐性の改善、マルチメデ
ィア・データベースのアクセス、複数の同期データの符
号化、自然データと合成データのハイブリッド符号化、
超低ビット率でのランダム・アクセス性の改善、等であ

【0004】以下、添付図面に基づき従来の技術の動き
ベクトルの符号化方法を説明する。図1は、一般的な8
×8モードでの動きベクトルの予測制限範囲を示すマト
リックスであり、図2a〜図2dは、8×8モードでの
動きベクトル予測候補を示す構成図であり、図3は、動
きベクトル中間値の予測において制限範囲を超す場合の
例を示す構成図である。現在、標準化進行中のMPEG
−4において整数単位のピクセルモーションの予測時に
行われる8×8ブロック別のサーチ動作は、16×16
動きベクトルを中心として±2ピクセルのサーチウィン
ドウ内で行われるようにしている。このため、特定のマ
クロブロックが8×8モードにて選択される場合、マク
ロブロック内の4つのブロックに対する各動きベクトル
は全て一定の境界内に入るようになる。図1に示すマト
リックスは、8×8モードと選択されたマクロブロック
の4つのブロックの動きベクトルの境界を示す。このよ
うな4つの動きベクトルの境界は、動きベクトルの符号
化効率を高めるのに大きく寄与する。境界内の4つの各
ブロックに該当する動きベクトルの構成は、隣接の3つ
の候補動きベクトル中間値を予測値として差成分(MV
Dx、MVDy)を符号化する。これを式で表現すれ
ば、 Px= 中間値(MV1x、MV2x、MV3x) Py= 中間値(MV1y、MV2y、MV3y)であ
り、MVDx=MVx−Px、 MVDy=MVy−P
yである。
ベクトルの符号化方法を説明する。図1は、一般的な8
×8モードでの動きベクトルの予測制限範囲を示すマト
リックスであり、図2a〜図2dは、8×8モードでの
動きベクトル予測候補を示す構成図であり、図3は、動
きベクトル中間値の予測において制限範囲を超す場合の
例を示す構成図である。現在、標準化進行中のMPEG

しているが、これは、以下の事項を理由として、完璧に
MPEG−4のVM(Verification Model)を支援するこ
とが不可能である。図2に示すように、8×8モードの
マクロブロックにおける動きベクトルの予測候補をみる
と、中間値の予測値として使用される動きベクトル値が
8〜8モードでの動きベクトルの制限範囲を超す場合
は、ブロック1を除けば、ブロック2にあたるMVD2
のみである。図2は、MPEG−4で動きベクトルの予
測のためのアルゴリズムに従って8×8モードにおける
動きベクトルの候補を示したものである。この場合に、
3つの動きベクトル予測候補のうち1つだけが8×8モ
ードに選択されたマクロブロック内に属しているため、
中間値として求められる予測値から得られるMVD2の
絶対値は制限範囲の5.0を超えない。このため、動き
ベクトルの制限範囲を超す場合つまり中間値による予測
値が制限範囲外にある場合が発生するが、これは、ブロ
ック2のMVをMVCurrentBlock(該当ブロックの動き
ベクトル)と、ブロック2のMV1をMV
InsideMBPrediction(境界内の動きベクトル予測値)
と、ブロック2の中間値の予測値の中間値(MV1、M
V2、MV3)をMVMedianPredictionと定義する場合
に、図3に示すように、MVMe dianPredictionが制限範
囲を超し、隣接の点に位置する場合を示す。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】境界内にある4つの各
ブロックに該当する動きベクトルの構成は、隣接の3つ
の候補動きベクトル中間値を予測値として差成分(MV
Dx、MVDy)(MVD: Motion Vector Different
ial)を符号化する、従来の技術の動画像の動きベクトル
の符号化方法においては、動きベクトルの制限範囲を超
す場合つまり中間値による予測値が制限範囲外にある場
合が発生してビット量の損失をもたらす問題点があっ
た。本発明は、上記の従来の技術の動画像の動きベクト
ルの符号化方法の問題を解決するためになされたもの
で、動画像の符号化過程で全体ビット率を減少させるの
に適した動画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法を提供する
ことを目的とする。
ブロックに該当する動きベクトルの構成は、隣接の3つ
の候補動きベクトル中間値を予測値として差成分(MV
Dx、MVDy)(MVD: Motion Vector Different
ial)を符号化する、従来の技術の動画像の動きベクトル
の符号化方法においては、動きベクトルの制限範囲を超
す場合つまり中間値による予測値が制限範囲外にある場
合が発生してビット量の損失をもたらす問題点があっ
た。本発明は、上記の従来の技術の動画像の動きベクト
ルの符号化方法の問題を解決するためになされたもの
で、動画像の符号化過程で全体ビット率を減少させるの
に適した動画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法を提供する
ことを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】動画像の符号化過程で全
体ビット率を減少させるに適した本発明の動画像の動き
ベクトルの符号化方法は、マクロブロックに対する探索
モードが8×8モードと選択されると、該当マクロブロ
ックを構成する4つの8×8ブロックで1番目のブロッ
ク(ブロック1)の動きベクトル予測候補を探索する段
階と、該当8×8ブロックの第1、2、3の動きベクト
ル予測候補の探索が完了すると、順次的にブロック2、
ブロック3、ブロック4の各々の第1、2、3の動きベ
クトル予測候補を探索する段階と、一番目の8×8ブロ
ックの動きベクトル中間予測値(M
VMedianPrediction)が動きベクトルの境界内にあるか
否かを比較して、境界内にある場合には、動きベクトル
中間予測値を該当8×8ブロックを符号化するための予
測値に決定する段階と、前記判断段階で動きベクトル中
間予測値が境界内にない場合には、選択的に第1、2、
3の動きベクトル予測候補のうち境界内にある予測候補
のベクトル値或いは動きベクトル中間予測値を該当8×
8ブロックを符号化するための予測値(PMV)として
決定する段階と、動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内にあ
るか否かを判断して予測値を決定する段階を該当マクロ
ブロックの全体の8×8ブロックに対して繰り返し行う
段階と、を備えることを特徴とする。
体ビット率を減少させるに適した本発明の動画像の動き
ベクトルの符号化方法は、マクロブロックに対する探索
モードが8×8モードと選択されると、該当マクロブロ
ックを構成する4つの8×8ブロックで1番目のブロッ

階と、該当8×8ブロックの第1、2、3の動きベクト

予測対象として使われるMVMedianPredictionが規定の
境界から外れる場合には選択的にMVInside
MBPredictionを予測値として使用するものである。すな
わち、ブロック2(規定の境界から外れる場合)に対す
る動きベクトル予測値(PMV)の選択部分を以下のよ
うに変更するものである。 PMV = 中間値(MV1、 MV2、 MV3) if (ABS(PMV−MV1)>THR)PMV=
MV1 ここで、THRは8×8モードでの実際の動きベクトル
の制限範囲を示す。THRの最大値は5.0である。そ
して、前記モーション予測候補が規定の境界を外れる場
合は、現在のMPEG−4で2番目の8×8ブロック
(図2b)の場合が多い。ゆえに、本発明の実施の形態
ではブロック2の場合にのみ上記のようなTHRと比較
するアルゴリズムに適用する。
MedianPredictionが動きベクトルの境界を超す場合に発
生するビット量の増加を防ぐためのものであり、中間値
予測対象として使われるMVMedianPredictionが規定の
境界から外れる場合には選択的にMVInside
MBPredictionを予測値として使用するものである。すな
わち、ブロック2(規定の境界から外れる場合)に対す
る動きベクトル予測値(PMV)の選択部分を以下のよ
うに変更するものである。 PMV = 中間値(MV1、 MV2、 MV3) if (ABS(PMV−MV1)>THR)PMV=
MV1 ここで、THRは8×8モードでの実際の動きベクトル
の制限範囲を示す。THRの最大値は5.0である。そ
して、前記モーション予測候補が規定の境界を外れる場
合は、現在のMPEG−4で2番目の8×8ブロック
(図2b)の場合が多い。ゆえに、本発明の実施の形態
ではブロック2の場合にのみ上記のようなTHRと比較
するアルゴリズムに適用する。
【0010】以下、このような原理を用いた本発明の動
画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法について図4を参照し
て説明する。図4は、本発明の動きベクトルの符号化の
実施の形態を示すフローチャートである。まず、動きベ
クトルの符号化のためのマクロブロックに対する探索モ
ードを8×8モードと選択する(401S)。次いで、
該当マクロブロックを構成する4つの8×8ブロックで

1、2、3の動きベクトル予測候補の探索が終わったか
否かを判断し(403S)、ブロック1の動きベクトル
予測候補の探索が終わった場合には、順次にブロック
2、ブロック3、ブロック4のそれぞれの第1、2、3
の動きベクトル予測候補(MV1)(MV2)(MV
3)の探索を行う(404S)。次いで、一番目の8×
8ブロックの動きベクトル中間予測値(MV
MedianPrediction)が動きベクトルの境界内にあるか否
かを比較する(405S)。
画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法について図4を参照し
て説明する。図4は、本発明の動きベクトルの符号化の
実施の形態を示すフローチャートである。まず、動きベ
クトルの符号化のためのマクロブロックに対する探索モ
ードを8×8モードと選択する(401S)。次いで、
該当マクロブロックを構成する4つの8×8ブロックで
一番目のブロック(ブロック1)の動きベクトル予測候
補を探索する(402S)。該当8×8ブロックの第
1、2、3の動きベクトル予測候補の探索が終わったか
否かを判断し(403S)、ブロック1の動きベクトル
予測候補の探索が終わった場合には、順次にブロック
2、ブロック3、ブロック4のそれぞれの第1、2、3
の動きベクトル予測候補(MV1)(MV2)(MV
3)の探索を行う(404S)。次いで、一番目の8×
8ブロックの動きベクトル中間予測値(MV
MedianPrediction)が動きベクトルの境界内にあるか否
かを比較する(405S)。
【0011】前記405Sの比較で動きベクトル中間予
測値が境界内にあるか否かを判断し(406S)、境界
内にある場合には、動きベクトル中間予測値を該8×8
ブロックを符号化するための予測値に決定する(407
S)。前記判断段階で動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内
に無い場合には、動きベクトル中間値−境界内にある予
測候補のベクトル値の絶対値を設定されたスレショルド
値(THR)と比較する(408S)。比較の結果、設
定されたTHRが大きかったら、第1、2、3の動きベ
クトル予測候補のうち、境界内にある予測候補のベクト
ル値を該当8×8ブロックを符号化するための予測値に
決定する(409S)。比較の結果、設定されたTHR
が小さかったら、動きベクトル中間予測値を該当8×8
ブロックを符号化するための予測値に決定する(407
S)。上記のような動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内に
あるか否かを判断し、設定されたTHRと比較して予測
値を決定する段階を、該当マクロブロックの全体の8×
8ブロックに対して繰り返す(410S)。
測値が境界内にあるか否かを判断し(406S)、境界
内にある場合には、動きベクトル中間予測値を該8×8
ブロックを符号化するための予測値に決定する(407
S)。前記判断段階で動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内
に無い場合には、動きベクトル中間値−境界内にある予
測候補のベクトル値の絶対値を設定されたスレショルド
値(THR)と比較する(408S)。比較の結果、設
定されたTHRが大きかったら、第1、2、3の動きベ
クトル予測候補のうち、境界内にある予測候補のベクト
ル値を該当8×8ブロックを符号化するための予測値に
決定する(409S)。比較の結果、設定されたTHR
が小さかったら、動きベクトル中間予測値を該当8×8
ブロックを符号化するための予測値に決定する(407
S)。上記のような動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内に
あるか否かを判断し、設定されたTHRと比較して予測
値を決定する段階を、該当マクロブロックの全体の8×
8ブロックに対して繰り返す(410S)。
【0012】このようにして予測値が決定されると、全
体動きベクトルでの予測値の差成分が符号化される。か
かる本発明の動画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法は、8
×8モードと選択される場合、MVMedianPredictionが
動きベクトルの境界を超す場合に発生するビット量の増
加を防ぐためのものであり、中間値予測対象として使わ
れるMVMedianPredictionが規定のTHRを外れる場合
にはMVInsideMBPred ictionを予測値として使用するこ
とにより符号化時のビット量の増加を抑制するものであ
る。
体動きベクトルでの予測値の差成分が符号化される。か
かる本発明の動画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法は、8
×8モードと選択される場合、MVMedianPredictionが
動きベクトルの境界を超す場合に発生するビット量の増
加を防ぐためのものであり、中間値予測対象として使わ
れるMVMedianPredictionが規定のTHRを外れる場合
にはMVInsideMBPred ictionを予測値として使用するこ
とにより符号化時のビット量の増加を抑制するものであ
る。
【0013】かかる本発明の動きベクトルの符号化技術
を用いた実施の形態を以下に説明する。本発明の動きベ
クトルの符号化技術を用いて実際の動きベクトルの符号
化を施した時のビット量を示す、その実施の条件は以下
の通りである。一つ、量子化パラメーター(QP)は各
シーケンスに対して同値に固定され、スキップされたマ
クロブロックの動きベクトルは計算量に含まれない。二
つ、拡張予測モードでシーケンス・レゾリューション・
フォーマットはQCIP(Quarter Common Intermediate
Format)(176×144)、フレーム率は10Hz
(300フレーム)である。三つ、f_code=1
(MV探索領域:−16.0〜+15.5)、そして符
号化技法は No shape coding (rectang
ular)とする。

化を施した時のビット量を示す、その実施の条件は以下

の決定に基づいて境界を外れる動きベクトル予測値を有
するブロック(MVD2)を符号化する場合の結果を示
し(図5はQP=10、図6はQP=20)、図7、図
8は全体の動きベクトルを符号化する場合の結果を示す
(図7はQP=10、図8はQP=20)。その結果を
見れば、MPEG−4ビデオVM5.0よりも効率よく
動きベクトルの符号化が行われる(ビット量の増加の抑
制)のが分かる。これは、動きベクトルの符号化の効率
性を高めてVM6.0に適用可能であるのを示すことで
ある。

するブロック(MVD2)を符号化する場合の結果を示
し(図5はQP=10、図6はQP=20)、図7、図
8は全体の動きベクトルを符号化する場合の結果を示す

見れば、MPEG−4ビデオVM5.0よりも効率よく
動きベクトルの符号化が行われる(ビット量の増加の抑
制)のが分かる。これは、動きベクトルの符号化の効率
性を高めてVM6.0に適用可能であるのを示すことで
ある。

【発明の効果】中間値予測対象として使用されるMV
MedianPredictionが規定の境界から外れる場合には選択
的にMVInsideMBPredictionを予測値として使用する本
発明の請求項1は、動きベクトルの符号化時に、ビット
量の増加を防いでより一層効率的な符号化が行われるよ
うにする効果がある。請求項2、4は、動きベクトル中
間値が規定の境界から外れる場合には、設定されたTH
Rと比較して、境界内にある予測候補のベクトル値或い
は動きベクトル中間予測値を該当8×8ブロックを符号
化するための予測値に決定するので、符号化効率を高め
る効果がある。請求項3、5は、THRを最大5.0と
して、動きベクトル探索範囲をMPEG−4で制限する
探索範囲内にあるようにすることで、適用性を高める効
果がある。
MedianPredictionが規定の境界から外れる場合には選択
的にMVInsideMBPredictionを予測値として使用する本
発明の請求項1は、動きベクトルの符号化時に、ビット
量の増加を防いでより一層効率的な符号化が行われるよ
うにする効果がある。請求項2、4は、動きベクトル中
間値が規定の境界から外れる場合には、設定されたTH
Rと比較して、境界内にある予測候補のベクトル値或い
は動きベクトル中間予測値を該当8×8ブロックを符号
化するための予測値に決定するので、符号化効率を高め
る効果がある。請求項3、5は、THRを最大5.0と
して、動きベクトル探索範囲をMPEG−4で制限する
探索範囲内にあるようにすることで、適用性を高める効
果がある。

- 【請求項1】 マクロブロックに対する探索モードが8
×8モードと選択し、該当マクロブロックを構成する4
つの8×8ブロックで1番目のブロック(ブロック1)
の動きベクトル予測候補を探索する段階と、 該当ブロック1の第1、2、3の動きベクトル予測候補
(MV1)(MV2)(MV3)の探索が完了すると、
順次的にブロック2、ブロック3、ブロック4の各々の
第1、2、3の動きベクトル予測候補を探索する段階
と、 ブロック1の動きベクトル中間予測値(MV
MedianPrediction)が動きベクトルの境界内にあるか否
かを比較し、境界内にある場合には、動きベクトル中間
予測値を該当ブロック1を符号化するための予測値とし
て決定する段階と、 前記判断段階で動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内にない
場合には、選択的に第1、2、3の動きベクトル予測候
補のうち境界内にある予測候補のベクトル値或いは動き
ベクトル中間予測値をブロック1を符号化するための予
測値(PMV)として決定する段階と、 前記動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内にあるか否かを判
断して予測値を決定する段階を、該当マクロブロックの
全体の8×8ブロックに対して繰り返し行う段階と、を
備えることを特徴とする動画像の動きベクトルの符号化
方法。 - 【請求項2】 動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内に無
い場合には、動きベクトル予測値(PMV)の決定は、
動きベクトル中間値−境界内にある予測候補のベクトル
値の絶対値を設定されたスレショルド値(THR)と比
較して、THRが小さかったら第1、2、3の動きベク
トル予測候補のうち境界内にある予測候補のベクトル値
を該当8×8ブロックを符号化するための予測値として
決定することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の動画像の動
きベクトルの符号化方法。 - 【請求項3】 動きベクトルの制限範囲(THR)の
最大値は5.0であることを特徴とする請求項2に記載
の動画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法。 - 【請求項4】 動きベクトル中間予測値が境界内に無
い場合には、動きベクトル予測値(PMV)の決定は、
動きベクトル中間値−境界内にある予測候補のベクトル
値の絶対値を設定されたスレショルド値(THR)と比
較して、THRが大きかったら動きベクトル中間予測値
を該当8×8ブロックを符号化するための予測値として
決定することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の動画像の動
きベクトルの符号化方法。 - 【請求項5】 動きベクトルの制限範囲(THR)の
最大値は5.0であることを特徴とする請求項4に記載
の動画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法。 - 【請求項6】 動きベクトル中間値−境界内にある予
測候補のベクトル値の絶対値を設定されたスレショルド
値(THR)と比較してTHRが小さい場合は、MPE
G−4の動きベクトル予測候補探索アルゴリズムに応じ
て該当マクロブロックにおいて2番目に探索される8×
8ブロック(ブロック2)であることを特徴とする請求
項1に記載の動画像の動きベクトルの符号化方法。
