2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, golf club heads such as drivers are made of wood, and the wooden head is generally reinforced by attaching a metal plate to the sole surface and further attaching an insert such as resin to the face surface. However, in recent years, golf clubs such as a driver having a metal or alloy head called a metal wood (hereinafter, referred to as a metal wood) have also appeared, and the metal wood has increased the flight distance of a hit ball and has an accurate direction. It is easy and is gradually replacing golf clubs such as drivers with wooden heads.

Particularly recently, a metal wood having excellent repulsion and corrosion resistance among metals or alloys and having a light titanium alloy head has been proposed (JP-A-63-154186).
Reference). As shown in FIG. 5, this titanium alloy head is manufactured by pressing a face shell 11, an upper shell 12 and a sole shell 13 by respectively pressing a titanium alloy. After mounting the balance weight 14 on the inner surface, the plurality of shell pieces 11, 12, and 13 were integrated by welding to produce a titanium alloy head.

It takes skill to cleanly weld a plurality of press-formed titanium alloy shell pieces, and the weld bead obtained by welding is ground and polished to smooth the surface. The longer the length of the welded portion, the higher the manufacturing cost.

In addition, when welding a plurality of press-formed shell pieces having a forged structure, since the structures of the forged structure of the shell pieces and the welded structure of the weld bead are different, distortion remains in the joint, and the welded joint is formed. The longer the length, the greater the residual strain, and if there is a small welding defect such as a pinhole in the welded joint, a crack will be generated from that part, making it possible to make full use of the excellent repulsion force of the titanium alloy. There were problems such as inability to do so.

Therefore, the present inventors have conducted research to produce a metal wood head which is low in manufacturing cost and has few welding defects and residual strains. As a result, a titanium alloy having a small opening and a hollow portion is obtained. Most of the head made by precision casting, then, after fixing the balance weight in the cavity from the above-mentioned opening, it is obtained by sealing with a lid made of titanium alloy obtained by precision forging the above-mentioned opening. Since the length of the weld bead for sealing the small opening is extremely short,
Fewer welding defects and residual strains, and less post-welding treatment for grinding and polishing the above-mentioned weld bead, thus making it possible to significantly reduce the production cost and sufficiently exhibit the repulsive force of the titanium alloy. They have learned that they can produce metal wood.

The present invention has been made based on such knowledge, and is obtained by precision casting of the titanium alloy head having an opening and a cavity, and then precision casting of the opening. The present invention is characterized by a method for manufacturing a golf club head in which the obtained titanium alloy lid is sealed by welding.

In the casting 01 shown in FIG. 2, the opening 6 is provided on the entire surface of the sole. However, as shown in FIG. 4, a part 10 of the sole is also integrally formed by precision casting to make the opening 6 as small as possible. However, it is possible to make the length of the welded portion as short as possible.
