2. Description of the Related Art As shown in FIG. 4, this type of electrophoretic display device using electrophoretic particles has a required display electrode pattern by using an appropriate transparent conductive member such as indium tin oxide on the opposing surfaces. And two transparent glass plates 1 and 3 in which electrophoretic particles 6 are dispersed in a liquid dispersing medium. The sealing member 5 also serving as the above is disposed in the outer peripheral portion. In the electrophoretic display device having such a structure, a display driving voltage is applied to the electrode patterns 2 and 4 so that the electrophoretic particles 6 are applied.
An electric field is applied to the dispersion system 7 to change the distribution state of the electrophoretic particles 6 so that the particles can be adsorbed and desorbed from the electrode patterns 2 and 4, thereby changing the optical characteristics of the dispersion system 7 so that characters, A desired display operation of a symbol or a graphic is performed.

In such an electrophoretic display device, when a film member is used for one of the electrode plates, the humidity of the operating environment is reduced due to the permeation of moisture such as water vapor through the film member. Since the change affects the amount of water in the dispersion, it is difficult to obtain a stable operation as a display device.

According to the present invention, when one of the electrode plates is constituted by a flexible sheet, this flexible sheet is used.
The flexible sheet is provided with a film on which a metal foil is laminated or a film on which a metal is vapor-deposited, thereby lowering the moisture permeability of the flexible sheet and keeping the moisture in the dispersion system constant. Thus, a highly reliable display device is provided.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS In FIG. 1, reference numeral 10 denotes a transparent glass plate as a base material for forming a transparent rigid electrode plate, on the upper surface of which a transparent conductive material such as indium tin oxide is used. The required electrode patterns 11 are formed appropriately. On the upper surface of the rigid electrode plate, there is provided an elastic porous spacer 12 for dividing and enclosing the dispersion system into small sections. The porous spacer 12 is formed on a sheet made of a material such as synthetic rubber such as silicon rubber, urethane rubber, fluorine rubber, or acrylic rubber or a material such as natural rubber by a punch, a laser or the like. A plurality of holes are integrally formed on the rigid electrode plate on the side where the electrode pattern 11 is formed, or a photosensitive resin is formed on the electrode pattern 11 by chemicals such as etching. The required through-holes can be arbitrarily formed by means of a suitable dissolving means.
