Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a spark plug. In particular, the present invention relates to a spark plug including a ground electrode that achieves both alcohol corrosion resistance and spark wear resistance.
Spark plugs are used in internal combustion engines such as automobile engines. As the internal combustion engine becomes more sophisticated and the environment in the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine becomes severe, developments are being made on the structure and materials of the spark plug. For example, there are the following reports regarding the ground electrode of a spark plug.
According to
By the way, in recent years, the diversification of fuels and the environment in the combustion chamber have become severe. Among them, the model using alcohol as fuel has a high possibility that the ground electrode corrodes during operation because the environment in the combustion chamber is becoming severer. Actually, when the environment in the combustion chamber was made harsher than in the past and an endurance test was performed using alcohol fuel, there was a problem that the ground electrode corroded. As a result of examining the results of this durability test, it was found that corrosion may or may not occur depending on the material forming the ground electrode. That is, when the ground electrode was formed of a high Ni alloy having a low content of elements other than Ni and good wear resistance due to spark discharge, the ground electrode corroded in a short time. On the other hand, when the ground electrode is formed of a low Ni alloy such as Inconel (registered trademark) material, in which the content of elements other than Ni is large and the wear resistance due to spark discharge is inferior to that of a high Ni alloy, It did not corrode for a long time.
From the results of this durability test, it is understood that the ground electrode may be formed of a low Ni alloy such as Inconel (registered trademark) material in order to ensure alcohol corrosion resistance. However, the ground electrode made of a low Ni alloy is inferior in spark wear resistance, so there is a problem that the life is shortened. In order to ensure the spark wear resistance, it is conceivable to join a noble metal tip to a portion of the ground electrode where spark discharge is performed, but since the noble metal tip is expensive, in order to provide a spark plug as low as possible. It is desirable to achieve both alcohol corrosion resistance and spark wear resistance without using noble metal tips.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a spark plug including a ground electrode that achieves both alcohol corrosion resistance and spark consumption resistance.

Since the ground electrode in this invention has a base material with a Ni content of 96% by mass or more, it has high thermal conductivity and quickly conducts heat received by the ground electrode by spark discharge to the metal shell. Since the so-called heat pulling is good, the spark wear resistance is excellent. The ground electrode in the present invention is a layer formed on the outer surface side of the base material, and has a protective layer having a Cr content of 15% by mass or more on the outer surface. In the cross section orthogonal to the outer surface, since the number N of crystal grain interfaces per unit length on the outer surface of the protective layer is 4 pieces / mm or more, the number N is less than 4 pieces / mm. As compared with the above, Cr can be rapidly diffused from the inside of the ground electrode to the outer surface, and a Cr oxide film can be rapidly formed on the outer surface of the ground electrode. As a result, the ground electrode in this invention is excellent in alcohol corrosion resistance. Therefore, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide a spark plug including a ground electrode that achieves both spark wear resistance and alcohol corrosion resistance.

Next, the ground electrode which is a characteristic part of the present invention will be described.
As shown in FIG. 2, the
The
The
The inventors believe that it is difficult to optimize the material composition of the ground electrode alone in order to achieve both high level of spark wear resistance and alcohol corrosion resistance of the ground electrode without using noble metal tips. A ground electrode having a two-layer structure in which a base material formed of a high Ni alloy having excellent spark wear resistance is coated with a coating layer formed of a low Ni alloy having a high content of Cr having alcohol corrosion resistance. Prototype. Then, when an endurance test was performed on the spark plug including the ground electrode having the two-layer structure using an alcohol fuel, it was corroded by the alcohol fuel in a short time contrary to expectation. To clarify this cause, we examined the difference between a single-layer ground electrode made of a low Ni alloy with a high Cr content and a ground electrode having a two-layer structure. It was confirmed that the crystal grain size of the coating layer in the two-layer structure was larger than the crystal grain size of the single-layer ground electrode both before and after. The crystal grain size of the coating layer of the ground electrode having a two-layer structure is large because when the ground electrode having a two-layer structure is manufactured, heat treatment at a high temperature is performed for the purpose of improving the adhesion between the base material and the coating layer. It is thought to be to do. This heat treatment increases the crystal grain size of the coating layer, thereby reducing the Cr diffusion path from the inside of the ground electrode to the surface, and as a result, the speed of forming the Cr oxide film on the surface of the ground electrode. Since it was slower than the case of the single-layer ground electrode, it is considered that the two-layer ground electrode was corroded in a short time, unexpectedly. In particular, the higher the Ni content of the base material, the easier the crystal of the coating layer grows, and the higher the Ni content of the base material in order to improve the spark wear resistance, the more the crystal of the coating layer grows and the resistance It has been found that alcohol corrosivity is reduced.
As a result of the study, the inventors succeeded in suppressing the crystal grain growth of the coating layer, that is, the
The number N of crystal grain interfaces per unit length on the outer surface of the
The number N of crystal grain interfaces per unit length on the outer surface of the
The
The
The

It is preferable that the
The
The
母材41のNiの含有率、及び希土類元素の含有率は、FE−EPMAに付属されたWDS(Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer)を用いて、次のようにして求めることができる。
The Ni content and the rare earth element content of the
The

A ground electrode having a two-layer structure was formed by subjecting a high Ni alloy base material to Cr plating treatment. Specifically, a coil material made of a high Ni alloy having a Ni content of 96% by mass or more was prepared, and a Cr plating process was performed while drawing the coil material. The coil material subjected to the Cr plating treatment was subjected to heat treatment for 2 hours to 20 hours in an Ar gas atmosphere in a temperature range of 900 ° C. to 1200 ° C. The size of the crystal grains in the protective layer formed by the Cr plating treatment was adjusted by appropriately changing the processing rate and composition of the coil material, the Cr plating treatment conditions, and the heat treatment conditions. Next, the coil material was cut into a predetermined length, and the surfaces serving as the inner and outer surfaces of the ground electrode were cut to produce ground electrodes having protective layers on both side surfaces.
The prepared ground electrode was joined to the prepared metal shell, and an insulator having the center electrode and the terminal metal fixture fixed thereto was assembled to the metal shell.
