通電時間t10は、後述する制御目標電流値よりも大きな一次電流が流れるように、2回目以降の一次電流通電時間よりも長く設定されたものである。
マルチ放電制御手段4は、一次電流検出手段5からの一次電流検出信号を入力して、一次コイル21に流れる一次電流の大きさを監視しており、後述する一次電流の定電流制御を行う。この定電流制御に先立ち、初回の一次電流の通電・遮断を、前述のように外部から入力した点火信号に応じて行う。換言すると、一次コイル通電信号の最初期部分は外部からの点火信号であり、初回の通電時間t10は当該点火信号を出力したECU等によって設定された時間長さである。
