A process for preparing a lubricating composition comprising:
(A)
(1) A step of reacting (i) a vinyl aliphatic monomer and (ii) a carboxylic acid monomer containing an α, β-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof to produce a copolymer, the carboxylic acid monomer Optionally including an ester group;
(2) optionally esterifying the copolymer of step (1) to produce an esterified copolymer;
(3) optionally reacting the copolymer of step (1) or (2) with a nitrogen-containing compound in an amount to provide an esterified copolymer containing at least 0.01 wt% nitrogen;
Producing an esterified copolymer, wherein the resulting copolymer is esterified with at least one of (1), (2) and (3);
(B) To mix the esterified copolymer made in (A) with at least one of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a performance additive other than the esterified copolymer to disperse the oxidation product Providing a lubricating composition comprising 2.5% by weight or less of a dispersant other than the esterified copolymer.

36. The process according to item 35, comprising step (3).

The step of reacting the esterified copolymer of step (1) or (2) with a nitrogen-containing compound comprises 0.01 wt% to 1.5 wt%, or 0.02 wt% to 0.75 wt% 37. A process according to item 35 or 36, which provides an esterified copolymer comprising 0.04 wt% to 0.25 wt% nitrogen.

39. A process according to any one of items 35 to 38, wherein the carboxylic acid monomer comprises an ester group derived from a primary alcohol to give the copolymer esterified in step (1).

40. A lubricating composition made by the method of any one of items 35-39.

41. Use of a lubricating composition according to any one of items 1 to 34 and 40 in an automotive power transmission system without the addition of any further dispersant.
(Item 42)
41. A method of lubricating a component of a vehicle power transmission system comprising the step of supplying the lubricating composition of any one of items 1-34 and 40 to the component of a vehicle power transmission system.
Claims (25)

Claims 1-19 and a lubricating composition according to any one of 23 comprising providing the components of the power transmission system of a vehicle, a method for lubricating the components of the power transmission system of a vehicle.
