このナンバープレート認識部1031におけるナンバープレート存否の探索は、例えば、次のように行う。距離算出部102は、複数の特徴ある点または線に対して、三角測量の原理により距離を測定することにより、撮像画像についての2次元の距離情報としてナンバープレート認識部1031に出力する。ナンバープレート認識部1031は、ナンバープレートの探索処理を行う上で最適な距離を例えば、撮像画像の所定領域が示す距離情報の平均から判定する。ナンバープレート認識部1031は、その平均の値が示す距離情報が認識処理を行う上で最適な距離であるときに、その時の前記距離算出部102からの前記2次元の距離情報と撮像画像を同一の縮尺で重なるように対応させる。候補領域切り出し部1033は、前記重なるように対応された距離が所定の値より小さい部分の領域をナンバープレート候補領域として撮像画像から切り出す。ナンバープレート認識部1031は、所定の値より小さい部分が、車両の先頭すなわちナンバープレート部分に相当すると判断し、切り出した領域についてナンバープレートの存否探索を行う。例えば、ナンバープレートに表示することが定められている「地域名」、「分類番号」、「平仮名等」及び「一連指定番号」の相互の位置関係ならびにそれぞれの文字の大きさと配置を特徴とするパターンを用いてパターンマッチングにより調べることにより、対象画像内にナンバープレートが存在するか調べることができる。

前記複数のカメラで撮影した複数の画像に基づいてカメラと撮影した物体との距離を算出して距離情報を出力する距離算出部と、
前記複数のカメラで撮影し、かつ前記距離算出部で得られた距離情報が所定範囲の距離である、少なくとも1枚の撮像画像に基づいてナンバープレートの文字認識動作を行い認識に成功したか否かの文字認識成否情報と文字認識が成功したときの認識した車両番号情報とを出力する車両番号認識部とを備え、
前記車両番号認識部が、車両番号の認識に成功したとき、車両の存在を検知したものとし、当該車両の車番を決定することを特徴とする車両検知及び車両番号認識装置。
