Description
現在、一般に海水脱塩に使用される基本的な技術には2つのタイプがある。その第1の技術は熱脱塩(thermal desalination)と呼ばれ、第2の技術は膜工程脱塩(membrane process desalination)と呼ばれている。既存の脱塩工程は、ほぼすべて最終的に熱的なものか膜ベースのものかに分類できる。どちらの技術も、大量のエネルギーを必要とすることが主な問題である。熱的工程の場合は、大量の熱を供給して蒸発を生じさせる必要がある。その工程のための温度は、華氏212度以上にも達する。膜ベース工程の場合、ろ過により水中に溶けた塩を除去するには海水に大きな圧力をかけなければならない。その工程のための圧力は、1,000ポンド/1平方インチ(pounds per square inch:psi)以上にも達する。周囲温度および圧力は、通常、それぞれ華氏72度および14.7psiであるため、これらのシステムに膨大なエネルギーが必要とされることは明らかである。周辺環境だけで、これらの工程を支援することはできない。周囲温度および圧力条件で完全に実施できる新たな脱塩工程があれば、エネルギー要件が他の既存工程よりはるかに引き下げられるはずであり、内在的な利点を有すると見られる。
