Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, as an electrophotographic image forming apparatus such as a laser printer, a copying machine, a facsimile, or the like, a configuration using an intermediate transfer belt as an intermediate transfer member is known. As described above, in an image forming apparatus using an intermediate transfer belt, first, as a primary transfer step, a toner image as a developer image formed on a photosensitive drum as an image carrier is transferred onto the intermediate transfer belt. Next transfer. By executing this primary transfer process at each image forming station corresponding to each color of yellow, magenta, cyan, and black, toner images of a plurality of colors are formed on the intermediate transfer belt. Further, as a secondary transfer step, the toner images of a plurality of colors primarily transferred onto the intermediate transfer belt are secondarily transferred collectively onto a recording material such as paper. The recording material on which the toner images of a plurality of colors are secondarily transferred collectively is then permanently fixed by a fixing unit provided in the image forming apparatus, thereby forming a color image. These primary transfer and secondary transfer are performed by applying a voltage from the power source to the primary transfer portion and the secondary transfer portion, respectively.
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2004-228561 discloses a configuration in which a power source for applying a voltage to the primary transfer unit and the secondary transfer unit is shared in the image forming apparatus having the above configuration for the purpose of reducing the cost of the power source. . Specifically, both primary transfer and secondary transfer are achieved by flowing a current from the secondary transfer portion in the circumferential direction of the intermediate transfer belt.
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2005-228561 discloses a configuration that suppresses image defects caused by unnecessary toner discharge (hereinafter, referred to as “toner dripping”) at the start or end of a rotational drive operation of an image forming apparatus.
Specifically, a toner charging member for collecting toner is provided upstream from the primary transfer portion on the intermediate transfer belt, and the toner charging member is charged with toner at the start or end of the rotation driving operation of the image forming apparatus. The structure controlled so that the voltage of reverse polarity is applied is disclosed.
However, in a configuration that achieves both primary transfer and secondary transfer by flowing an electric current from the secondary transfer unit to the primary transfer unit via the intermediate transfer belt, as a countermeasure against the toner splattering, the toner charging member has toner and When a reverse polarity positive voltage is applied, the following problems may occur.
When a positive polarity voltage having a polarity opposite to that of the toner is applied before the rotation driving operation of the image forming apparatus is started, the positive polarity voltage applied to the primary transfer unit via the intermediate transfer belt causes the photosensitive drum to have a positive polarity. The drum memory is generated.
In addition, in order to suppress the occurrence of drum memory, when a negative voltage is applied to the charging roller for charging the photosensitive drum, the discharge on the positive side in the primary transfer portion and the discharge on the negative side in the charging portion are discharged. By repeating, drum scraping (deterioration) is promoted.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the present invention is to reduce the occurrence of image defects in an image forming apparatus having a common power source for primary transfer and secondary transfer.

FIG. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of the image forming apparatus according to the first embodiment. The image forming apparatus according to the first embodiment includes first to fourth image forming stations as shown in FIG.

Next, details of each member included in the image forming apparatus according to the first embodiment will be described.

The
The
Moreover, the resistance value in the circumferential direction was measured using a circumferential resistance measuring jig shown in FIG. The measurement direction will be described below. As shown in FIG. 2A, the

<Conductive brush>
The
As shown in FIG. 3A, the method for measuring the resistance per unit length of the conductive fiber is as follows. Two

Here, like the toner indicated by A in FIG. 4, the

As a result, a current (± 300V) corresponding to the
Here, one Zener diode is connected in the opposite direction because a stable potential is supplied to the primary transfer nip even when a reverse polarity voltage is applied, such as when discharging the charging member. It is to do.
<Operation of Image Forming Apparatus>
Next, specific operations of the image forming apparatus according to the first embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 5 is a timing chart of the printing operation in the first embodiment. 6 to 9 are diagrams illustrating toner states in the first exemplary embodiment.
In FIG. 5, S1 is the timing when the image forming apparatus receives the image signal, and is the timing when the image forming operation starts. At this time (S1), the negative voltage of the secondary transfer high

Here, as shown in FIG. 5, before the main motor is turned on (before the image forming operation is started), the positive voltages of the conductive brush high
Further, as shown in FIG. 5, the negative voltage of the secondary transfer high-
Next, when the positive voltage of the conductive brush high
Next, when image formation preparation is completed on the

Thereafter, when the primary transfer process in all the image forming stations (a) to (d) is completed (S4), the surfaces of the
In the first embodiment, the operation after S4 is referred to as a post-rotation operation. Thereafter, in the rotating operation, the positive and negative voltages of the secondary transfer high
For example, in the sections S5 to S6, the positive voltage of the secondary transfer high
The toner state at this time is shown in FIG. In the figure, the secondary transfer residual toner A having a positive charge moves while being electrostatically attracted to the

In the sections S6 to S7, the positive voltage of the secondary transfer high-
At the same time (S6), the discharge of the negative toner B from the toner charging member (
FIG. 8 is a toner state diagram after S6. From the time point S6, the secondary transfer residual toner A is electrostatically pulled away from the

From this point (S7), the negative toner B is attracted to the photosensitive drum 1 side by a force that is electrostatically separated from the
Next, the main motor of the image forming apparatus is turned off when all the negative polarity toner is collected in the
Here, in Example 1, the positive voltage of the conductive brush high-

Accordingly, it is possible to suppress the discharge in the primary transfer portion and the accompanying drum memory and drum scraping while suppressing unnecessary toner discharge (toner splatter dropping) on the toner charging member (conductive brush 16). As a result, it is possible to suppress image defects and extend the life of the image forming apparatus (photosensitive drum).
In the first exemplary embodiment, control is performed to supply a negative voltage to the primary transfer unit while applying a positive voltage to the toner charging member at both timings when the main motor is ON and when the main motor is OFF. However, only one of the timings may be used.

(Example 2)
Next, an image forming apparatus according to Embodiment 2 of the present invention will be described. In the configuration of the image forming apparatus according to the second embodiment, the same members as those of the first embodiment are denoted by the same reference numerals, and description thereof is omitted. Matters not described here are the same as those in the first embodiment.
<Features of Example 2>
FIG. 10 is a schematic configuration diagram of an image forming apparatus according to Embodiment 2 of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 10, the image forming apparatus according to the second embodiment is characterized in that, as in the first embodiment, only the
The
About the structure of the
Another feature of the second embodiment is that the negative voltage applied to the

<Operation of Image Forming Apparatus>
A specific operation of the image forming apparatus having the above characteristics will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 11 shows a timing chart of the printing operation in the second embodiment. In FIG. 11, the timings (S1 to S9) are the same as those in the first embodiment, and the toner states at the respective timings are also the same as those in FIGS. .

In step S5, the secondary transfer positive high
In S6, the secondary transfer positive high
In S7, the secondary transfer positive and high

In S8, the main motor of the image forming apparatus is turned off. At the same time (S8), the conductive brush positive and high
Here, in the second embodiment, at the time when the main motor is turned off (S8), the conductive brush positive and high
<Effects of Example 2>
As described above, according to the second embodiment, toner is applied to the toner charging member (
Current value flowing from secondary transfer member> Current value flowing from toner charging member
Further, in the second embodiment, the above effect is achieved by reducing the cost by not using the
In the first exemplary embodiment, control is performed to supply a negative voltage to the primary transfer unit while applying a positive voltage to the toner charging member at both timings when the main motor is ON and when the main motor is OFF. However, only one of the timings may be used.
In the second embodiment, the Zener diode 15 is connected to the three-
In addition, a conductive member such as a metal roller is installed at a location facing the photosensitive drum 1 (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d) in the primary transfer nip portion of each image forming station, and the stretching
In the second embodiment, the
In each of the embodiments, the case where the normal charging polarity of the toner is negative has been described, but it is needless to say that the present invention can be applied even when the toner is positive. In the case of a positive toner, it may be configured such that a superimposed current that satisfies the following relationship and can maintain the negative polarity of the back surface potential of the intermediate transfer belt in the primary transfer nip portion may be used.
