Abstract
The present invention provides a process in a continuous line that regenerates the entire stream of contaminated low quality sulfolane in the extraction system. In particular, a regenerator is installed in the solvent circulation loop to continuously remove contaminants and maintain the solvent in a clean, effective and corrosion-free state. Specifically, the regenerator includes a pressure vessel having a detachable cover and a round rack having a vertical stainless steel tube fitted to the pressure vessel. A magnetic bar is placed in each stainless steel tube. Place the screen cylinder in the ring of stainless steel tube. The regenerator removes contaminants as contaminated sulfolane passes through the regenerator. It is also possible to periodically disassemble the regenerator to remove contaminants. Such a reproducing apparatus is characterized by a simple configuration, high operation reliability, and low operation maintenance cost. By using such a regenerator, the extraction system can be operated with high efficiency and high operation without worrying about troublesome corrosion.
Description
The present invention relates to a method for regeneration in a line of contaminated sulfolane solvent in an aromatic extraction system to continuously maintain solvent quality at a desired level. More specifically, a new regenerator is installed in the circulation circuit to remove sulfolane decomposition products and corrosion products including fine solid particles of acid, polymer, iron and sand, and maintain the solvent at a high quality level. At the same time, it relates to a process that maintains high operational efficiency and also keeps the corrosion of the extraction system low. Furthermore, by removing these contaminants, the sulfolane decomposition rate is drastically reduced, leading to minimization of sulfolane consumption. The present invention is characterized by high contaminant removal efficiency, simple construction, and low operation and maintenance costs.
Sulfolane, C 4 H 8 O 2 S is also known as tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide and tetramethylene sulfone. Sulfolane is used as an extraction and reaction solvent. Sulfolane is used to separate aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, and xylene) from non-aromatics such as paraffin and naphthalene. Sulfolane is used to separate n-propyl alcohol and sec-butyl alcohol. Sulfolane is used to purify natural gas streams and fractionate fatty acids into saturated and unsaturated components.
Usually, sulfolane units are incorporated into aromatics complexes to recover high purity benzene and toluene products from reformate gasoline and pyrolysis gasoline. In modern aromatic plants, the sulfolane unit is located downstream of the reformate separation column.
The aromatics are dissolved in the sulfolane in the sulfolane extraction column, and the mixture becomes the extraction phase (bottom), while the remaining non-aromatic countercurrent (contacted) is brought into contact with the rotating disk column (RDC). The efficiency of the process is improved by mixing with such a rotating baffle.
First, sulfolane is recovered from the raffinate with a coalescer and transferred to a water wash column. The final raffinate is pumped to Naphtha Blending as a gasoline component.
After recontacting with additional sulfolane, the extract is stripped and concentrated to aromatics. Solvent is recovered by vacuum distillation of the extract and separated from the water by cooling and clay treatment to reduce olefins and diolefins and sent to an aromatic fractionation unit for separation of benzene and toluene.
Corrosion is a serious problem in sulfolane extraction systems. The sites most frequently corroded by contaminated sulfolane are the stripper, extraction stripper column, reboiler, transfer line, and rich solvent line to the solvent recovery column.
Most of the root cause of corrosion is the accumulation of acidic materials in the circulating solvent. Contaminated sulfolane changes from colorless to black, increases in viscosity, is sticky, acidic (pH level is lowered to about 4), and corrosive. In general, the following four factors are regarded as the main factors of corrosion / erosion problems in sulfolane extraction units.
・ Oxygen in the plant (introduced via intake or inflow)
・ Chlorine in circulating solvent ・ Decomposition and corrosion products in the plant ・ High temperature in the reboiler
Decomposition products and corrosion products are sticky, sticky, sticky, odorous, difficult to handle and uncomfortable. Degradation and corrosion products can continue to accumulate in the plant for years. These degradation and corrosion products can clog filters and carbon adsorbent beds to increase pressure loss, and most importantly, reduce the heat exchange coefficient of the heat exchanger and reduce operating efficiency. Can lead to In addition, dirt accumulated in the plant generally acts as a type of corrosive material and / or catalyst to produce further degradation products. An emergency method to control corrosion is to neutralize the acid by adding monoethanolamine (MEA), but this leads to further contamination of the sulfolane solvent. Operational rules of thumb suggest that plants need to be thoroughly cleaned from time to time. In a commercial sulfolane extraction unit, approximately 10-15 m 3 of contaminants were removed from the unit. Thorough cleaning of the sulfolane extraction unit is a very difficult task.
As shown below, there are various ways to keep the sulfolane in the circulation unit clean.
1) Place filter bed or cartridge in low quality sulfolane transfer line to catch degradation products and corrosion products. However, filters or cartridges can be spoiled in a short time due to the large amount of degradation and corrosion products. Most commercial units have such filters, but these filters are difficult to handle and are often bypassed.
2) A twin adsorption tower filled with an adsorbent such as activated carbon is provided to remove decomposition products and corrosion products. According to a commercial rule of thumb, such an adsorption tower is not practical because it clogs in a short period of time and is difficult to clean and replace the adsorbent.
3) Reuse of sulfolane: A sulfolane sub-stream containing degradation and corrosion products is withdrawn from the circulation system and transferred to a vacuum distillation unit. The overhead distillate is clean sulfolane and is reused in the circulation system, and the bottom distillate is a decomposition product and a corrosion product and is disposed of as waste. Operation is inefficient because only a small amount of the solvent in the system is reused. In addition, harmful waste to be disposed of is generated.
4) Remove acidic contaminants including sulfonic acid and small amounts of carboxylic acid and hydrochloric acid using cationic and / anionic resins. U.S. Pat. No. 5,053,137 by Lal and Bhat suggests that purified or regenerated contaminated or spent treated sulfolane can be obtained by sequentially passing the split stream through two columns. The first column is packed with a cation exchanger and the second column is packed with an anion exchanger. With Liu and Li, acids in degradation and corrosion products can be efficiently ion exchanged by cationic resins (LIU linchi and Li Dong-sheng, Petrochemical Design, 2002, 19 (2), 31-33. ), A cleaner sulfolane solvent was shown. The acid-containing cation resin is regenerated with NaOH solution. In this process, only the split stream is ion exchanged, limiting the efficiency of improving sulfolane quality. This process is cumbersome and results in a large amount of hazardous waste that must be disposed of.
In order to control the corrosion rate, an acid such as monoethanolamine (MEA) can be used to neutralize the acid. However, decomposition products and corrosion products remain in the circulation system, causing the heat exchanger to fail, causing clogging, and helping to reduce pressure loss. Furthermore, the accumulated decomposition products and corrosion products catalyze the decomposition of sulfolane by autocatalysis, accelerate the corrosion and accumulation of the decomposition products and corrosion products, and lead to a vicious circle. Therefore, a significant amount of purging is required to maintain the amount of sulfolane at an acceptable level.
The prior art relating to controlling sulfolane corrosion and regenerating sulfolane has many disadvantages as described below.
1) Since the accumulated decomposition products and corrosion products catalyze the decomposition of sulfolane and accelerate the corrosion and accumulation of the decomposition products and corrosion products, the corrosion rate of the system was high and the cycle was vicious.
2) The accumulation rate of decomposition products and corrosion products was accelerated by the autocatalysis of decomposition products and corrosion products.
3) The operation of exchanging the filter and the adsorbent was cumbersome, dangerous and expensive.
4) When the quality of sulfolane was not maintained at a desired level or higher, the operating degree and operating efficiency were lowered.
5) Due to the operation with the split stream, the regeneration of the sulfolane solvent was inefficient.
6) The operation maintenance cost was expensive.
There is a clear need in the industry for an efficient, safe and economical method of regenerating contaminated sulfolane to operate an aromatic extraction system safely and efficiently, at high operating rates and low operating and maintenance costs. It was.
The present invention provides a continuous method for regenerating contaminated sulfolane in the circulation loop of an aromatic extraction system that can be substantially equivalent in quality to new sulfolane. Specifically, the method uses a new regenerator to regenerate contaminated sulfolane solvent by removing degradation products and corrosion products from the entire stream in the circuit, maintaining high operating rates and operational efficiencies. .
A new regenerator for removing degradation and corrosion products is placed in the contaminated sulfolane solvent system to process the entire stream during circulation. The regenerator is preferably located in the low quality sulfolane section, most preferably at the coldest point before entering the post-cooler extraction column. Two regenerators are arranged side by side, and the regenerators in line (in operation) are switched to spare regenerators so that the collected degradation products and corrosion products can be released. In particular, the regenerator comprises a high pressure vessel having a removable cover and a round rack having a vertical stainless steel tube fitted within the high pressure vessel. A magnetic bar is placed in each stainless steel tube. Place the screen cylinder in the ring of stainless steel tube. The regenerator removes contaminants as the contaminated sulfolane passes through the regenerator. It is also possible to periodically disassemble the regenerator to remove contaminants.
As contaminated sulfolane enters the regenerator, degradation and corrosion products adhere and adhere to vertical stainless steel tubes filled with strong magnetic rods and are removed from the solvent system. By providing an internal screen cylinder, the removal of degradation products and corrosion products by magnetic bars can be enhanced. It is important to enhance removal in this way when residual degradation products and corrosion products are to be kept at a low level. The regenerated clean sulfolane is discharged from the regenerator through an internal screen cylinder and returned to the extraction column for recycling. After being placed in the stream for a period of time (approximately 2 weeks), the regenerator is filled with degradation and corrosion products, increasing the pressure loss across the regenerator. The stream is switched to a spare regenerator, the decomposition products and corrosion products filled in the regenerator are released, and the round tray is removed along the magnetic bar. A round tray with a vertical tube with a magnet inside is placed in the container and the magnet is removed from the tube. When the magnetic bar is removed, the decomposition product and the corrosion product fall from the vertical pipe because the attractive force is lost by removing the magnetic bar. This system is characterized by high contaminant removal efficiency, simple structure, and low operation maintenance cost.

Further objects and advantages will become apparent with reference to the following description and drawings.
In accordance with the present invention, all of the contaminated lean sulfolane solvent is continuously passed through a regenerator according to the present invention to remove acids, degradation products, and corrosion products, The quality can be kept essentially the same as the new sulfolane solution. This new reproducing apparatus is the core of the present invention. Also, the installation and operation of this regenerator is important.

[Playback device]
The playback device is the core of the present invention. The invention and design of this regenerator is based on the discovery of the properties of degradation products and corrosion products. Generally, accumulated degradation products and corrosion products are
1 Acids such as sulfonic acid and sulfuric acid produced by oxidation of sulfolane 2 Acids derived from chlorine such as hydrochloric acid 3 It is considered to be an oligomer of sulfolane produced by oxidative condensation of sulfolane and the decomposition product of sulfolane .
These products are acidic, have a low pH, are black and sticky, are easily deposited in systems such as lines, filters, and heat exchangers, causing loss of operating and operating efficiency. These products are difficult to remove from solvent circuits and processing equipment. Removing these products from the solvent system and cleaning the system equipment has become a research issue for the petroleum and petrochemical industries as a whole.
The inventors have researched to find a sticky product containing fine but rough black particles. As a further feature of these products, it has been found that these products are essentially paramagnetic and adhere to the magnet. Surprisingly, the use of a magnet removed the product, cleared the contaminated sulfolane solvent, and regenerated its properties. This is thought to be due to the corrosion of the equipment by acidic by-products and the release of Fe ions during the process operation. Furthermore, iron ions react with sulfur, oxygen, and water to form fine paramagnetic particles such as FeS, FeO, and Fe (OH) 2 . These fine black particles change the sulfolane solvent to black. These fine paramagnetic particles are taken into the organic degradation products, and the total mass of the degradation products and corrosion products is paramagnetic. Therefore, by using the magnet, it is possible to remarkably remove the entire mass of decomposition products and corrosion products from the contaminated solvent and regenerate the used solvent. Through the experiments and tests, a new regenerator was designed and proved useful.

Two playback devices were constructed. The size was 33 cm in diameter, 65 cm in height, and 55 liters in volume. A magnetic bar was inserted into the stainless steel tube provided in the round rack. The size of the screen cylinder was 80 mesh. The regenerator was placed side-by-side under the cooler and before the extractor in the low quality sulfolane circuit.

[Example 2]
The regenerator was tested in an aromatic extraction system in a refinery. The extractor had been in operation for three years and the low quality sulfolane solution was dirty, corrosive and rich in gooey degradation and corrosion products. The extractor was 3,600 mm ID × 42,000 mm T-T. The extractor was fed with 42,531 Kg / Hr reformate as feed. The circulating rate of contaminated low quality sulfolane flowing through the regenerator and into the extractor was 138,602 Kg / Hr. Therefore, the solvent to feed ratio in this study was about 3. When the pressure loss of the entire reproducing apparatus became 2 kg / cm 2 , the reproducing apparatus was cleaned. At the start of the test, the low quality sulfolane solution was very dirty and the regenerator had to be cleaned at the end of the week. However, if the low-quality sulfolane solution was continuously cleaned by the regenerator, the cleaning period by the regenerator was extended from one week to two weeks, four weeks, and three months. When the rack was removed from the regenerator, the surfaces and spaces between the stainless steel tubes were filled with black, sticky degradation and corrosion products. When the magnetic bar was removed, the black sticky degradation products and corrosion products fell, and the stainless steel was clean for reuse.
Samples prior to placement of the playback device and samples three months after placement are characterized to demonstrate the effectiveness of the playback device according to the present invention. Characterized characteristics are
1) Amount of residue obtained by distilling low quality sulfolane solvent up to 288 ° C .: Since sulfolane boils at 285 ° C., the residue should be a degradation product and a corrosion product. Therefore, the lower the residue content, the cleaner the low quality sulfolane solvent.
2) Color of the low-quality sulfolane solution: Since degradation products and corrosion products are dark, the lighter the color, the cleaner the sulfolane solution.
3) Amine ratio (monoethanolamine): Since acid is generated in the process of sulfolane decomposition, the lower the amine addition ratio for maintaining a certain pH, for example, pH 8, the cleaner the sulfolane solvent. .
4) Sulfolane replenishment rate: Since sulfolane decomposes in the process, a certain amount of low quality sulfolane solvent is purged to maintain the quality of sulfolane. Therefore, it is necessary to add new sulfolane to make up the volume. Therefore, the lower the replenishment rate of new sulfolane, the cleaner the sulfolane solvent.
The amount of residue based on ASTM method 86 was 1.0% and 0.4%, respectively, before regeneration and for 3 months after regeneration. The extraction system was soiled with a large amount of degradation and corrosion products. Therefore, the samples used in this study are not representative, and both actual residues may be much higher than the 1% shown in the table. In contrast, the extraction system after 3 months of regeneration was surprisingly clean and a residue content of 0.4% was a good representative of the low quality sulfolane in the system.
The color of the samples before and 3 months after regeneration was significantly different. This observation is consistent with 3 and 0.5 of the color number measurement results based on ASTM D1500.
The above results clearly show that the regenerator according to the present invention is effective for regenerating contaminated or used sulfolane solutions.
