Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus having a plurality of light emitting elements for forming an image by exposing an image carrier and a control method thereof.
A photosensitive body charged in advance at a predetermined potential is exposed according to image information to form an electrostatic latent image, the electrostatic latent image is developed with toner, and the visualized toner image is transferred to a recording paper. As an exposure device used in an image forming apparatus applying the so-called electrophotographic process to obtain an image by heating and fixing, a light beam using a laser diode as a light source passes through a rotating polygonal mirror called a polygon mirror on the photoreceptor. Each light emitting unit is formed using a method of forming an electrostatic latent image by scanning, and a light emitting element array in which light emitting elements (hereinafter referred to as LEDs) and organic electroluminescent materials are arranged in a line. There is known a system in which an electrostatic latent image is formed on a photoreceptor by individually controlling lighting (ON / OFF).
In general, an exposure apparatus including a light-emitting element array using LEDs or organic electroluminescent materials as a constituent element selectively illuminates each light-emitting element in the very vicinity of the photoconductor to irradiate the photoconductor with exposure light. The image forming apparatus equipped with a laser diode has no moving parts like a rotating polygon mirror in an image forming apparatus using a laser diode, and has high reliability and quietness. A large optical space serving as a path for the image forming apparatus is unnecessary, and the image forming apparatus can be downsized.
In particular, an exposure apparatus equipped with an organic electroluminescence element as a light emitting element integrates a drive circuit composed of a switching element made of a thin film transistor (hereinafter referred to as TFT) and an organic electroluminescence element on a substrate such as glass. Therefore, the structure and manufacturing process are simple, and there is a possibility that further downsizing and cost reduction can be realized as compared with an exposure apparatus in which an LED is mounted as a light emitting element.
However, on the other hand, it is known that the organic electroluminescence element undergoes so-called light quantity deterioration in which the light emission luminance gradually decreases with the driving thereof. An organic electroluminescence element applied to a general display device or the like has a light emission luminance of about 1000 [cd / m 2 ] at most, but is applied to an exposure device mounted on an image forming apparatus such as an electrophotographic apparatus. For example, assuming that the specifications of an image forming apparatus are 600 dpi (dot / inch) and 20 ppm (pages / minute), the organic electroluminescence element is required to have an emission luminance of 10,000 [cd / m 2 ] or more. The driving conditions are very severe with high voltage and large current. For this reason, the organic electroluminescence element applied to the exposure apparatus is more susceptible to the deterioration of the amount of light than that applied to the display apparatus, so that the exposure amount of each organic electroluminescence element is equal to the initial state. In order to maintain it, some exposure correction is required.
It is also known that the light emission luminance of an organic electroluminescence element has temperature dependence. This temperature dependency is determined by the organic material constituting the organic electroluminescence element, and can have both positive characteristics and negative characteristics. The above-described image forming process of the electrophotographic apparatus includes a step of fixing the toner image on the recording paper by heat and pressure. Since the apparatus has a heat source capable of generating a large amount of heat, the temperature change inside the apparatus is prevented. Along with this, the emission luminance of the organic electroluminescence element changes. Also in this case, exposure amount correction for correcting the exposure amount of each organic electroluminescence element is required.
In addition, since it is difficult to prevent variation in emission luminance between individual organic electroluminescence elements, exposure amount correction is also required to prevent variation in exposure amount between elements.
With regard to exposure amount correction, for example, a configuration disclosed in
Further, according to
According to
However, since the light quantity measurement operation requires a certain amount of time, there is a situation in which the printing operation is affected depending on the timing at which the light quantity measurement operation is performed, leading to a decrease in printing speed.

<Initialization operation>
First, an initialization operation when the

Hereinafter, the description will be continued with reference to FIG.

As will be described in detail later, the

When the image information is transferred from the outside to the

An engine control CPU (not shown) independently controls the electrostatic latent image writing timing by each of the

FIG. 3 is a block diagram of the

For example, 52 is a relay substrate in which an electronic circuit is formed on a glass epoxy substrate. 53a is a connector A, 53b is a connector B, and at least a
ガラス基板50の表面にコネクタを直接実装することは接合強度や多様な環境における信頼性を考慮すると困難であるため、本実施形態では中継基板52のコネクタA 53aとガラス基板50との接続手段としてFPC(Flexible Printed Circuit;フレキシブルプリント回路)を採用し(図示せず)、ガラス基板50とFPCの接合は例えばACF(Anisotropic Conductive Film;異方性導電フィルム)を用いて、予めガラス基板50上に形成された例えばITO(Indium Tin Oxide;錫ドープ酸化インジウム)電極に直接接続する構成としている。
Since it is difficult to directly mount the connector on the surface of the

A

62はガラス基板50上に形成されたTFT(Thin Film Transistor)回路である。

57 is a light quantity sensor formed on the upper surface of the organic electroluminescence element 63 (in FIG. 4B). The

In FIG. 5,

Hereinafter, the data structure and data contents in the light amount correction data memory will be described with reference to FIG.
As shown in FIG. 6, the light quantity
First, data DD [0] to DD [5119] stored in the first area will be described with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4 in FIG.
The already-explained exposure apparatus 13 (see FIG. 3) includes a step of adjusting the light quantity of each organic electroluminescence element 63 (see FIG. 4) constituting the
Further, a CCD camera provided on a jig (not shown) measures the two-dimensional exposure amount distribution of each
Now, assuming that the light emission area of the
In the first area of the light quantity
Next, data ID [0] to ID [5119] stored in the second area will be described with reference to FIGS.
At the same time that the jig acquires the data stored in the first area, the jig obtains 8-bit light quantity measurement data based on the output of the light quantity sensor 57 (see FIG. 4) via the source driver 61 (see FIG. 4) of the
Now, the driving condition of the
In this way, data stored in the first area and the second area in the manufacturing process of the
Next, data ND [0] to ND [5119] stored in the third area will be described with reference to FIG. 6, FIG. 4, and FIG.
The
In the
Hereinafter, the calculation content of the light amount correction data by the
DD [n] (n is the value in the main scanning direction) stored in the first area is “the set value of the
The light quantity correction data ND [n] generated in this way is once written in the third area of the light quantity correction data memory 66 (see FIG. 5). Thereafter, prior to image formation, the light quantity correction data ND [n] is copied from the light quantity
The light quantity measurement data is subjected to voltage conversion by the charge accumulation method in the
Hereinafter, the description will be continued returning to FIG.
FIG. 7 is a block diagram showing the configuration of the
In FIG. 7,
An
On the other hand, control for an
An
In any case, when a light quantity correction request is input from the
Next, the operation when measuring the amount of light of the
As will be described later, the correction of the amount of light is performed at the timing specified by the user using the
Since the image forming operation is managed by the
The
Based on this request, the
The
The binary image data transferred in synchronization with the timing signal in this manner is input to the
As described above, the lighting of the
The light quantity measurement data output from the
FIG. 8 is a circuit diagram of the
The
In the embodiment, one group is 8 pixels (that is, M = 8), and this group is 640. Therefore, the total number of pixels is 8 × 640 = 5120 pixels. Each
The
On the other hand, the
FIG. 9 is an explanatory diagram showing a current program period and a lighting period of the
In the embodiment, one line period (raster period) of the
First, the gate controller 68 (see FIG. 8) sets the program period by turning on the SCAN_A signal and turning off the SCAN_B signal for the pixel of pixel number = 1. During the program period, 8-bit light amount correction data is supplied to the D /
When the program period is completed, the gate controller 68 (see FIG. 8) immediately sets the lighting period by switching the SCAN_A signal to OFF and the SCAN_B signal to ON. As already described, the binary image data is supplied to the gate controller 68 (see FIG. 8) according to the time of image formation and the measurement of the amount of light. If the image data is OFF even during the lighting period, organic electroluminescence is provided. The
On the other hand, when the program period for the pixel circuit 69 (see FIG. 8) with the pixel number = 1 shown in FIG. 9 ends, the gate controller 68 (see FIG. 8) immediately applies to the pixel circuit 69 (see FIG. 8) with pixel number = 8. Sets the current program period. Thereafter, as in the procedure for the pixel circuit having the
In this way, the gate controller 68 (see FIG. 8) sets the pixel number in the main scanning direction = “1 → 8 → 2 → 7 → 3 → 6 → 4 → 5 → 1. Will be set. By adopting such a lighting order, the lighting timing of the nearest pixel is adjacent in time between adjacent pixel groups, so that the image step at the time of forming one line can be made inconspicuous.
Here, the value set in the pixel circuit 69 (see FIG. 8) in the current program period is, for example, 8-bit light amount correction data as described above. Since the organic electroluminescence element 63 (see FIG. 8) is formed by a coating process such as spin coating, the adjacent pixel correlation becomes extremely high. Due to this effect, the light emission luminance of the organic electroluminescence element 63 (see FIG. 8) in the vicinity of the specific organic electroluminescence element 63 (see FIG. 8) becomes almost the same. Accordingly, since the correlation between the light amount correction data with respect to these adjacent organic electroluminescence elements 63 (see FIG. 8) is very high, for example, the light amount correction data with the pixel number = 1 and the light amount correction data with the pixel number = 8 do not change greatly. .
In the current program period controlled by the gate controller 68 (see FIG. 8), the current value according to the light amount correction data is supplied to the pixel circuit 69 (see FIG. 8), and the capacitor in the pixel circuit 69 (see FIG. 8). Is charged by a so-called constant current source, and the time required for charging is (Equation 2).
According to (Equation 2), the charging time is proportional to the capacitance, and if the capacitance C increases due to an increase in the wiring capacitance accompanying wiring routing, the charging time increases. In the embodiment, in order to dispose the source driver on the extended line of the light emitting element array and at the end in the long side direction of the
However, in the embodiment, what is supplied by the source driver 61 (see FIG. 8) is light amount correction data, and since the value of the light amount correction data is high in one pixel group as described above, the same pixel. Within the group, V in (Equation 2) hardly changes. After all, in the current programming process, the difference in V between sequentially selected pixel numbers dominates the charging time, but the difference in V between originally selected pixel numbers is very small, so the charging time is very short. It becomes. Therefore, the shortage of the current program period due to the increase in the wiring length from the source driver 61 (see FIG. 8) has almost no problem in the embodiment, and as described so far, the source driver 61 ( The distance between the pixel circuit 69 (see FIG. 8) and the pixel circuit 69 (see FIG. 8) can be greatly separated.
This situation is greatly different from a display that uses a current programming method to set a drive current for each pixel unit and reproduces multiple gradations such as 64 gradations and 256 gradations for each pixel unit. It can be said that this is a merit unique to the

At this time, the light quantity sensor output from each light quantity sensor, and the light quantity measurement data are read out. The sequence at that time is as follows. However, the read sequence is not particularly limited.
(1) First, light quantity measurement data is read from all the light quantity sensors of the sensor group connected to the driver line Ro1.
FIG. 12 is a timing chart showing the operation in each part shown in FIG. In other words, this corresponds to the timing chart of the reading operation of the light quantity measurement data performed for each

Here, FIG. 12A is a diagram showing the charge state (charge state) of the
First, by receiving an ON signal from the selection
When the
Then, after the elapse of a predetermined time in this state, the charge /
Further, when the charge /
Thereafter, the
For the setting of the timing when the above-described steps S2 and S3 are combined (accumulation time), that is, the timing at which the charge /
FIG. 13 is a diagram illustrating various examples of timings for measuring the light amount of the organic electroluminescence element in the light amount correction. This figure shows an example in which the timing for performing light quantity measurement, which is part of light quantity correction, is set at three timings of initialization (initialization) of the image forming apparatus, continuous printing process, and standby. In the figure, (1) is a light quantity measurement during an initialization process, (3) and (4) are light quantity measurements during a continuous printing process, and (5) is a light quantity measurement during standby. (2) is light quantity measurement between the initialization process and the continuous printing process.
The initialization process is a process in which the image forming apparatus prepares for printing after the power is turned on. In the initialization process, (a) heating of the heating roller starts normally at the same time as (a) turning on the power. Thereafter, (d) at the same time as the drive motor (not shown) of the photosensitive member is driven, (f) charging of the surface of the photosensitive member by the charger is started (generation of the charging potential V O ). Thereafter, (g) a developing bias potential V B is applied to the developer by the developing station.
When the
Further, even during the continuous printing process, the light quantity measurement of (3) and (4) can be executed. In particular, the steps (d), (f), and (g) are executed during this period, but since the recording paper has not been conveyed, it is considered that the light quantity measurement can be executed.
Here, as described with reference to FIG. 12, it takes a certain accumulation period to perform highly accurate light quantity measurement for one light emitting element. Further, during the accumulation period, it is necessary to cause the

(First embodiment)
FIG. 14 is a timing chart showing the light amount measurement operation of the image forming apparatus according to the first embodiment of the present invention, in which FIG. 14A is a power supply operation, FIG. 14B is a print signal input operation, and FIG. (C) shows the printing operation, and FIG. 14 (d) shows the timing of the light quantity measurement operation. In the example shown in FIG. 14, the light quantity measurement operation during the initialization process shown in (1) of FIG. 13 will be described, but the same applies to other timings.
As shown in FIG. 14, when the power is turned on at time t10 (FIG. 14 (a)), the engine control CPU 91 (see FIG. 7) of the
Thereafter, when a print signal as a print start instruction is input from the outside at time t12, which is from time t11 until the light quantity measurement completion necessary period Ta elapses, the
Here, as an aspect in which the print start instruction is input, an instruction to accept an input operation of an instruction to start printing provided in the
According to the first embodiment of the present invention, since the light amount measurement operation is interrupted in response to the print start instruction, it is possible to immediately start the print operation when the print start instruction is input, The light quantity can be measured without affecting the printing operation timing.

(Second Embodiment)
15A and 15B are timing charts showing the light amount measurement operation of the image forming apparatus according to the second embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 15A is a power supply operation, FIG. 15B is a print signal input operation, and FIG. 第1の実施形態と同様に、時刻t10にておいて電源が投入されると(図15(a))、時刻t11において光量計測動作が開始する(図15(d))。時刻t12においてプリント信号が入力されると(図15(b))、光量計測動作が中断される(図15(d))と共に、印刷動作が開始する(図15(c)) As in the first embodiment, when the power is turned on at time t10 (FIG. 15 (a)), the light quantity measurement operation starts at time t11 (FIG. 15 (d)). When a print signal is input at time t12 (FIG. 15B), the light quantity measurement operation is interrupted (FIG. 15D) and the printing operation starts (FIG. 15C).
After that, as shown in FIG. 15C, when the printing operation is completed at time t21, the
According to the second embodiment of the present invention, since the light quantity measurement operation is resumed from the interrupted portion after the printing operation is completed, the time required for the light quantity measurement is not increased and the printing operation timing is reached. It is possible to measure the light amount without affecting the above.
(Third embodiment)
16A and 16B are timing charts showing the light amount measurement operation of the image forming apparatus according to the third embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 16A is a power supply operation, FIG. 16B is a print signal input operation, and FIG. (C) shows the printing operation, and FIG. 16 (d) shows the timing of the light quantity measurement operation. In FIG. 16, the same reference numerals are given to portions overlapping those in FIGS. 14 and 15.
時刻t12においてプリント信号が入力されると(図16(b))、光量計測動作が中断される(図16(d))と共に、印刷動作が開始する(図16(c)) As in the first and second embodiments, when the power is turned on at time t10 (FIG. 16A), the light quantity measurement operation starts at time t11 (FIG. 16D). When a print signal is input at time t12 (FIG. 16B), the light quantity measurement operation is interrupted (FIG. 16D) and the printing operation starts (FIG. 16C).
Thereafter, as shown in FIG. 16C, when the printing operation is completed at time t21, the
When the period during which the printing operation from time t12 to t21 is performed is long, it is conceivable that environmental changes such as temperature occur around the
According to the third embodiment of the present invention, since the light quantity measurement operation is started from the first procedure after the printing operation is completed, accurate light quantity measurement is performed without affecting the printing operation timing. It can be carried out.
(Fourth embodiment)
FIG. 17 is a timing chart showing the light amount measurement operation of the image forming apparatus according to the fourth embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 17A shows a power supply operation, and FIG. 17B shows a case where there is no printing interruption. FIG. 17C shows the print signal input operation, FIG. 17D shows the print operation, and FIG. 17E shows the timing of the light amount measurement operation when a print interrupt occurs. Note that, in FIG. 17, the same reference numerals are given to portions overlapping with FIG. 14.
First, a specific example of the light quantity measurement operation will be described. A weak current (dark current) flows through the
Further, the correction of the light amount of the
In the example shown in FIGS. 17A and 17B, an example in which the light quantity measurement / correction operation is performed a plurality of times (n times) when the power is turned on will be described.
As shown in FIGS. 17A and 17B, when the power is turned on at time t40, the light quantity measurement operation starts at time t41. Then, after the first turn-on measurement procedure MB (1) is performed, the first turn-off measurement procedure MD (1) is performed. And controller CPU83 (refer FIG. 4) produces light quantity correction data based on the light quantity measurement result in this lighting measurement procedure MB (1) and light extinction measurement procedure MD (1).
Next, the engine control CPU 91 (see FIG. 7) drives the
In this way, when the n-th lighting measurement procedure MB (n) is completed, the light quantity measurement operation is completed at time t44. These times t41 to t44 correspond to the light quantity measurement completion necessary period Ta. The number of corrections n may be a predetermined number, or a predetermined reference (a variation in the light quantity measurement value between the
Next, an operation when a print interrupt occurs during the above-described light amount measurement operation will be described with reference to FIGS. 17 (a) and 17 (c) to (e).
If a print signal is input while the extinction measurement procedure MD (1) is being performed at time t42, the
Note that, as described above, the procedure of the light quantity measurement operation performed after the print signal is input may be until the procedure performed at the timing when the print signal is input is completed or designated in advance. May be. For example, it may be specified in advance that the light quantity measurement operation is always executed until the completion of the m (m <n) turn-on measurement procedure MB or the turn-off measurement procedure MD.
Further, as indicated by an arrow D in the figure, the
According to the fourth embodiment of the present invention, since the light quantity measurement operation is interrupted after being executed up to a predetermined procedure, the light quantity measurement operation is performed in a desired manner, for example, by securing a desired number of light quantity corrections. It becomes possible to interrupt at the timing. Therefore, it is possible to appropriately measure the light amount while suppressing the influence on the printing operation timing.
(Fifth embodiment)
FIG. 18 is an explanatory diagram showing the operation when the engine is started during the lighting measurement procedure, and FIG. 19 is a timing chart showing the light quantity measurement operation of the image forming apparatus according to the fifth embodiment of the present invention. . FIG. 19A shows a print signal input operation. FIGS. 19B to 19E show a drawing operation, an engine operation, an organic electroluminescence element operation, and a light amount measurement operation when the engine is started during the lighting measurement procedure. Further, FIG. 19F to FIG. 19I show a drawing operation, an engine operation, an organic electroluminescence element operation, and a light amount measurement operation of the image forming apparatus according to the fifth embodiment.
First, the operation when the engine is started during the lighting measurement procedure will be described with reference to FIGS. 18 and 19A to 19E.
As shown in FIG. 18, in this embodiment, the surface potential (charge potential by the charger 9) V O of the
However, even with this light, the post-exposure potential V L is set to −50 V, so that an electrostatic latent image may be formed on the
This phenomenon will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in FIG. 19A, when a print signal is input at time t50, a drawing operation is started as shown in FIG. Specifically, in the controller 41 (see FIG. 4), the
On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 19D, when the lighting measurement procedure MB of the light quantity measurement operation starts at time t50, the lighting measurement procedure MB continues until time t52 after the elapse of time Tb required for the lighting measurement procedure. . At that time, the
Therefore, when the drawing operation period Tf is shorter than the lighting measurement period Tb, the lighting operation ELM is performed in a state where the engine is operating during the period from time t51 to t52, as shown by the oblique lines in the drawing. That is, since the
Therefore, in the image forming apparatus of this embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 19F to 19I, when a print signal is input, even if the drawing operation period Tf is shorter than the lighting measurement period Tb, As indicated by an arrow G in the figure, the
Further, in the image forming apparatus according to the present embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 19C, 19D, 19G, and 19H, the organic electroluminescence is started after the engine operation is started. A period Tr is required until the
The period Tr is usually a period longer than the extinction measurement period Td required for the extinction measurement procedure MD. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 19 (i), the
According to the fifth embodiment of the present invention, since the
As already described with reference to FIG. 2, the developer includes a toner and a carrier, and the description so far and the following description are based on the premise of so-called two-component development. More precisely, even in the case of so-called one-component development composed of a charge control agent and a predetermined external additive necessary for maintaining fluidity, etc., contamination by toner is detected by measuring the amount of light. The points that occur are exactly the same. Furthermore, in the fifth embodiment of the present invention, the developer is prevented from adhering to the
The “light quantity measurement timing” is a part of the “light quantity correction timing” and is a timing for measuring the light quantity of the
Now, in the above-described embodiment, the description has been made on the assumption that the lighting time of the
Also, depending on the exposure apparatus, there are a plurality of light-emitting element arrays composed of organic electroluminescence elements, etc., and a latent image is formed by performing multiple exposures at substantially the same position with respect to the rotation direction of the photoreceptor. Is also known. Even in such an exposure apparatus, it is possible to apply the technical idea of the present invention by setting the light amount and the PWM time so that a latent image formed by a plurality of exposures does not contribute to development. . In such an exposure apparatus, a single light emitting element array does not form a latent image that contributes to development. For example, a sequence in which the amount of light is measured in units of lines between sheets can be considered.
In the embodiment, the light quantity of the
