Description
The present invention relates to a spark plug for an internal combustion engine.
In recent years, with improvements in engine performance, spark plugs are required to have a longer life and improved antifouling performance. For example, what is called a creeping discharge type spark plug is known as a spark plug for an internal combustion engine with improved fouling resistance. In this configuration, the spark generated in the spark discharge gap is propagated in a creeping discharge form via the insulator surface at all times or depending on conditions. Among these, what is called a semi-surface discharge type spark plug includes a center electrode, an insulator that covers the center electrode, and a ground electrode that has a tip ignition surface disposed so as to face the side surface of the center electrode. . And the front-end | tip part of an insulator is arrange | positioned by the positional relationship which penetrates between the center electrode and the ignition surface of a ground electrode (namely, spark discharge gap). When this type of spark plug is struck in a form along the surface of the insulator tip surface, air discharge occurs between the ignition surface at the tip of the ground electrode and the surface of the insulator.
Spark plugs, when used for a long time in a low temperature environment with an electrode temperature of 450 ° C. or less, such as during pre-delivery, become so-called “buzz” or “fogging”, and the surface of the insulator is conductive fouling such as carbon. It is covered with a substance and malfunctions easily occur. However, according to the creeping discharge type spark plug described above, spark discharge occurs in the shape of the insulator surface, so that the fouling material is constantly burned out, and the antifouling property is improved compared to the parallel electrode type spark plug. To do.
By the way, it is known that in a creeping discharge type spark plug, sparks scooping over the surface of the insulator frequently occur, so that so-called channeling, in which the surface of the insulator is cut into a groove shape, is likely to occur. As channeling progresses, the heat resistance of the spark plug is impaired, or problems such as reduced reliability are likely to occur. Such channeling is particularly likely to occur during high speed or high load operation. In recent years, with higher engine output, there has been a demand for spark plugs with even higher durability, and demands for prevention or suppression of channeling have become stricter.
In addition, as a material for the center electrode of the spark plug, a Ni-based heat-resistant alloy may be used from the viewpoint of improving heat resistance. However, since the Ni-base heat-resistant alloy contains a relatively large amount of subcomponents such as Cr and Fe, the thermal conductivity is considerably low depending on the composition. As a result, the heat-drawing performance of the electrode is reduced, and the consumption of the electrode or the consumption of the noble metal ignition part formed on the electrode is accelerated. And in the use environment where the electrode temperature is likely to rise, such as during high-speed and high-load operation, there is a problem that the life is likely to end early.
An object of the present invention is to provide a spark plug that has good heat dissipation of the center electrode, good durability against electrode wear, and excellent anti-fouling property and hardly causes channeling.
In order to solve the above problems, a spark plug according to the present invention is:
A spark discharge gap is formed between the center electrode, the insulator disposed outside the center electrode, and the tip of the center electrode, and creeping sparks along the surface of the tip of the insulator in the spark discharge gap A ground electrode in which a positional relationship between the distal end portion of the insulator and the distal end portion of the center electrode is determined so as to enable discharge;
A plurality of ground electrodes are arranged around the center electrode, and at least one of the plurality of ground electrodes is opposed to the end surface of the center electrode and the side surface of the center electrode with at least a part of the tip of the insulator interposed therebetween. A semi-creeping ground electrode that forms a semi-creeping discharge gap with the side surface of the central electrode.
The electrode base material forming at least the surface layer portion of the center electrode contains an element capable of forming an oxide semiconductor having a negative temperature coefficient of electrical resistivity as a subcomponent, and has a thermal conductivity of 17 to 30 W / m · Ni alloy containing Ni as a main component, which is K, containing 1% by mass or more of Fe as an accessory component, similarly 1.5% by mass or more of Cr, and a total of 2.5 to 9% of Fe and Cr % Ni-containing alloy .
By using a center electrode made of a Ni alloy having the NTC-based element as a subcomponent within the above range, a layer containing an NTC oxide semiconductor serving as an erosion suppressing layer is formed on the surface of the insulator tip. It is easy to form, can effectively suppress the erosion of the insulator tip surface due to creeping spark discharge, improve the heat dissipation performance of the electrode, can greatly improve the durability against electrode consumption It becomes.
Note that the erosion suppression layer as described above may have an effect of reducing the discharge voltage in the spark discharge gap, and if this is used, the electrode (or the noble metal wear-resistant portion formed on the electrode) is consumed as a result. Suppression and further channeling mitigation can be achieved. In order to enable creeping spark discharge, the shortest distance between the insulator and the ground electrode should be shorter than the shortest distance between the center electrode and the ground electrode.
In the configuration of the present invention , two or more ground electrodes are arranged in a form surrounding the center electrode. As a result, the spark generation positions can be dispersed around the insulator, which is more advantageous in terms of suppressing the occurrence of deep channeling.
In the spark plug of the present invention, a plurality of ground electrodes are arranged around the center electrode, and at least one of the plurality of ground electrodes has an end surface and a side surface of the center electrode at the tip of the insulator. By being arranged to face each other with at least a part of the electrode, a semi-creeping ground electrode is formed which forms a semi-creeping discharge gap with the side surface of the central electrode . Since the end face of the ground electrode and the side face of the center electrode are arranged to face each other with at least a part of the tip of the insulator therebetween, the frequency of creeping spark discharge on the insulator surface is increased, and the anti-fouling property It will be particularly excellent. In addition, this is not always desirable from the viewpoint of preventing channeling of the insulator in the structure of the conventional spark plug, but as described above, the present invention contains the NTC element as a subcomponent. Since the center electrode made of Ni alloy is used, it is possible to realize a spark plug having excellent channeling resistance despite the high frequency of creeping spark discharge. Further, the distance E from the front end surface of the insulator to the rear edge of the end surface of the ground electrode, that is, the front end surface of the ground electrode (semi-surface ground electrode) in the axial direction of the center electrode, and the front end of the insulator It is desirable to secure an overlap dimension E with the side surface of 0.2 mm or more. Thereby, the blocking effect of the discharge path by the
In the above aspect, one of the plurality of ground electrodes may be a parallel ground electrode that forms a parallel air discharge gap with its side surface facing the tip surface of the center electrode in parallel. In this embodiment, a parallel air discharge gap similar to a so-called parallel electrode type spark plug is formed between the side surface of the parallel ground electrode and the front end surface of the center electrode, while the semi-surface discharge gap is formed by the semi-surface discharge electrode. Formed between the front end surface of the first electrode and the side surface of the center electrode. If the parallel air discharge gap is made larger than the semi-creeping discharge gap, it is easy to ignite normally in the parallel air-discharging gap, and if the tip of the insulator is soiled, the semi-creeping discharge gap It becomes easy to fly. Since the parallel air discharge gap has a high concentration of sparks and a high frequency of sparks at the protruding position, the ignitability can be further improved.
In the creeping discharge type spark plug having the above-described configuration, the difference d−D between the outer diameter D of the center electrode and the inner diameter d of the through hole through which the center electrode is inserted is in the axial direction from the tip position of the insulator. It is desirable that 0.07 mm or more is secured at a
About the factor of formation of an erosion suppression layer, the present inventors are estimating as follows. That is, gas molecules in the vicinity of the spark discharge gap are ionized by the occurrence of the spark discharge, and the ions are accelerated by the electric field gradient between the gaps and collide with the ignition surface of the electrode, thereby sputtering the metal component. It is considered that the sputtered metal component immediately becomes an oxide and is deposited on the surface of the insulator to form an erosion suppressing layer.
Here, the reaction product generated by oxidation of the sputtered metal component does not necessarily contribute to the formation of the erosion control layer, but part of it becomes dust, which is a gap between the central electrode and the insulator through hole. May be deposited on. Similarly, the dust of the eroded suppression layer that has been cut off can enter the gap and accumulate. In any case, if the gap amount is small, the generated dust accumulates and tends to clog the gap with high density. In this state, for example, if the cooling and heating cycle is repeated, a problem such as a crack in the insulator may occur due to a difference in expansion between the metal center electrode and the ceramic insulator.
However, as a result of intensive studies by the present inventors, the amount of dust in the gap is increased by ensuring the gap amount expressed by the difference in diameter between the outer diameter of the center electrode and the inner diameter of the insulator through hole to be 0.07 mm or more. It has been found that clogging is suppressed. That is, even if the dust generated due to the formation of the erosion suppressing layer enters the gap between the center electrode and the insulator, it is possible to prevent the insulator from cracking when the cooling / heating cycle is repeated. The reason why the gap amount is defined at a
Note that the strength of the attack of creeping discharge sparks on the insulator, and thus the tendency of channeling, is also affected by the difference in the voltage application polarity of the spark discharge to the electrodes. In particular, it is advantageous to apply a spark discharge voltage so that the center electrode side is positive, because channeling is less likely to occur than when a negative voltage is applied. When a voltage is applied with a negative polarity on the center electrode side, the outer diameter D of the center electrode at a
Next, the Ni alloy that forms the electrode base material of the center electrode preferably employs, for example, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ti, Ru, V, Co, Nb, and Ta as the NTC elements. be able to. These components have a relatively small ionic radius when the NTC oxide semiconductor is formed, have excellent diffusion permeability to the surface of the insulator made of alumina, and thus improve the adhesion of the formed erosion-suppressing layer. It is effective in stably maintaining the erosion control effect on the body and the channeling prevention effect.
As the NTC element, particularly when at least one of Cr, Fe and Cu is employed, the above effect is remarkable. In this case, it is necessary to adjust the content of Cr in the Ni alloy in a range of 1.5 to 9% by mass, in particular, Cr is contained in the constituent metal (Ni alloy) of the electrode base material. There is . If the Cr content is less than 1.5% by mass, the effect of reducing the discharge voltage cannot be achieved . Moreover, when applied to a creeping discharge type spark plug, the function of preventing erosion of the layer formed on the insulator surface is insufficient, and the effect of preventing channeling is insufficient. Moreover, when Cr content exceeds 9 mass%, it will become difficult to make heat conductivity 17 W / m * K or more . Note that Cr and Fe also have the effect of improving the high temperature strength of the Ni alloy, and can achieve both high temperature durability of the electrode and prevention of channeling of the insulator at the same time from other NTC elements. Is also advantageous.
In the configuration of the spark plug, the reason why the thermal conductivity of the constituent metal (Ni alloy) of the electrode base material is limited to 17 W / m · K or more is that the thermal conductivity is less than 17 W / m · K. This is because the heat pulling performance is deteriorated and the durability against electrode consumption cannot be secured. The reason why the thermal conductivity is limited to 30 W / m · K or less is that if the thermal conductivity is increased beyond 30 W / m · K, the Ni content in the Ni alloy must be increased. As a result, the layer derived from the electrode base material formed on the insulator surface leads to insufficient discharge voltage reduction effect or insulator erosion suppression effect. From such a viewpoint, the content of Cr in the Ni alloy is desirably set in the above range, and the content of Cr is set in the range of 2 to 5% by mass .
The electrode base material may be used which contains 1 to 5 mass% of Fe. By using such a material, it is possible to further improve the insulator erosion suppressing effect or the discharge voltage lowering effect of the formed erosion suppressing layer. The formed erosion suppressing layer contains both Fe and Cr. If the Fe content in the Ni alloy exceeds 5% by mass, the thermal conductivity tends to be outside the above range, and if it is less than 1% by mass, the effect of adding Fe will not be sufficiently exhibited .
As the Ni alloy constituting the electrode base material, it is desirable to use an alloy containing Cr and Fe and further containing Cu . In this case, the erosion suppressing layer also contains Cu and essentially contains Cr and Fe . Cr is an element necessary for ensuring the oxidation resistance of the electrode base material and stabilizing the erosion-suppressing layer, and Fe and Cu effectively act to lower the discharge voltage. Fe as a minor component is contained in an amount of 1% by mass or more, and similarly 1.5% by mass or more of Cr . When the Fe content is less than 1% by mass, the effect of decreasing the discharge voltage becomes poor, and therefore, the capacity discharge voltage increases and the channeling suppression effect may not be fully expected. Further, if the Cr content is less than 1.5% by mass, the oxidation resistance of the electrode base material and the stabilization effect of the erosion suppressing layer may not be sufficiently secured. In this case, the Fe and Cr Ru contained 2.5 to 9 mass% in total.
In addition, from the viewpoint of suppressing oxidation of the Ni alloy constituting the electrode base material, the Cr content is desirably higher than the Fe content. In this case, more preferably, WCr / WFe is 2 or more, where the Cr content is WCr (mass%) and the Fe content is WFe (mass%).
Next, the Ni alloy constituting the electrode base material of the center electrode is insulated even when an alloy containing at least one element of Ru, Zn, V, Co, Nb, Ta and Ti is used as a subcomponent. By forming an erosion suppressing layer on the body surface, a channeling suppressing effect can be similarly achieved.
In the spark plug of the present invention , in order to make the thermal conductivity of the electrode base material 17 W / m · K or more, the Ni content in the Ni alloy constituting the electrode base material is preferably 80% by mass or more. In addition, when the total content of the subcomponents in the Ni alloy constituting the electrode base material is 1.5% by mass or more, the channeling suppression effect due to the formation of the erosion suppression layer becomes remarkable, or the heat sink performance of the electrode improvement effect is remarkable. On the other hand, the total content of the subcomponents is desirably 10% by mass or less from the viewpoint of sufficiently ensuring the spark wear resistance of the center electrode.
Hereinafter, requirements that can be added to the spark plug of the present invention will be described. First, the center electrode can be configured to have a structure in which an electrode base material is embedded in the axial direction with a heat radiation promoting metal part made of a material having a higher thermal conductivity than the electrode base material. As a result, it is possible to effectively promote the heat-drawing of the tip of the center electrode, which is likely to rise in temperature, and to thereby extend the life of the spark plug by suppressing electrode consumption. In this case, in the axial direction, the side where the front end surface of the center electrode is located is the front side, the opposite side is the rear side, the front end surface of the insulator is the reference position, the front side is +, and the rear side is- In this case, it is desirable to set the tip of the heat radiating metal portion so as to be within a range of ± 1.0 mm with respect to the tip surface of the insulator in the axial direction. When the tip position of the heat radiation promoting metal part is retracted into the insulator beyond -1.0 mm from the reference position, the heat dissipation improvement effect of the tip part of the center electrode by the heat radiation promoting metal part becomes insufficient, This may lead to faster electrode consumption. On the other hand, if the tip position of the metal part for promoting heat dissipation exceeds +1.0 mm from the reference position and protrudes from the insulator tip surface, the heat resistance of the electrode tip part decreases when the electrode base material wears down. , May lead to a failure that quickly reaches the end of its life.
Further, in the above configuration, the thickness in the radial direction with respect to the axial line of the electrode base material at the position spaced 0.5 mm rearward in the axial direction from the tip surface of the insulator is the outer diameter of the central electrode at that position. It is desirable to ensure 30% or more. In this way, the heat dissipation of the tip of the center electrode, which is likely to rise in temperature, is effectively promoted by the metal part for promoting heat dissipation, and the durability against electrode wear due to a spark in a semi-creeping gap at that position is achieved. Can also be adequately secured.
Also, with respect to the ground electrode, the surface layer portion is made of an electrode base material made of Ni or Ni alloy, and the heat radiation promoting metal portion made of a material having a higher thermal conductivity than the electrode base material is provided inside the ground layer electrode. It is also possible to embed in the longitudinal direction of the electrode. Thereby, the heat pulling of the ground electrode can be promoted, and durability against wear can be increased. In this case, in the ground electrode, it is desirable to set so that the tip of the heat radiation promoting metal portion is located in the range of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm from the tip surface of the ground electrode. In addition, it is effective in order to implement | achieve the outstanding heat dissipation characteristic cheaply to comprise the metal part for heat radiation promotion incorporated in a center electrode or a ground electrode by Cu or Cu alloy.
Next, the portion of the ground electrode and / or the center electrode where the spark discharge gap is formed can be a consumable part made of a noble metal or a composite material mainly composed of the noble metal. Thereby, the expansion of the spark discharge gap due to electrode consumption can be effectively suppressed, and the life of the spark plug can be extended. As a noble metal used for the wear resistant part, a metal having at least one of Ir, Pt and Ru as a main component can be suitably used. Such a wear resistant part can be easily formed by joining to the ground electrode and / or the center electrode by any of laser beam welding, electron beam welding and resistance welding.
Hereinafter, several embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to examples shown in the drawings.

Hereinafter, the operation of the
The
As shown in FIG. 2, in the
In the
The
About the reason why the
Whether or not the

As shown in FIG. 2, the reaction product generated by the oxidation of the evaporated electrode metal component does not necessarily contribute to the formation of the erosion suppressing layer, but a part thereof becomes dust, which is the
In addition, when voltage is applied with a positive polarity on the
In order to improve the channeling resistance of the spark plug, it is necessary to form an operating environment in which the attack of creeping discharge sparks on the
On the other hand, as a system belonging to the latter, it is effective to provide two or
Further, in FIG. 2, it can be said that increasing the axial cross-sectional diameter D2 of the tip of the
The
For example, as shown in FIG. 2, in the axial direction O of the
Further, in the direction of the axis O, the side where the front end surface 2a of the
On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 2, the
On the other hand, as indicated by the alternate long and short dash line in FIG. 2, the surface layer of the
In addition, the material of the
Next, in the
The wear
The wear
As shown in FIG. 3, when the wear-
On the other hand, in the
The wear resistant part 40 (FIG. 3) on the
Next, in the
In this case, the material of the
In the spark plugs of the above embodiments, all the ground electrodes are
In the above configuration, a parallel air discharge gap gα similar to that of a so-called parallel electrode type spark plug is formed between the side surface of the
Note that the gap gβ does not cause any sparks even at normal times, and may cause considerable fires even in situations where no contamination is caused. In this case, the sparks in the gap gβ are in the form of a semi-surface discharge on the tip surface of the
At the tip of the
Since if the chip is Ir-based metal is a high melting point, but joining by laser welding is desired, in the case of Pt-based metal or Ru-based metal, because from Ir-based metal is a low melting point, resistance welding or electron Joining by beam welding is also possible.

For the spark plug shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the following experiment was conducted to confirm the effect of the present invention. In FIG. 2, the size of the first gap g1 is set to 1.6 mm, and the size of the gap g2 is set to 0.6 mm. In FIG. 2, E is 0.5 mm and t is 1.2 mm. The outer diameter D2 of the distal end portion 2a of the
In order to investigate the channeling resistance and electrode wear of these spark plugs, they were attached to a 4-cylinder gasoline engine (displacement 1800 cc), operated for 200 hours at a fully opened throttle and an engine speed of 6000 rpm. The depth of the channeling groove formed on the surface was measured by observation with a scanning electron microscope (note that the voltage application was intermittently performed at a frequency of 60 Hz with a negative polarity on the center electrode side). The determination conditions were mild (◯) when the groove depth was less than 0.2 mm, moderate (Δ) when 0.2 to 0.4 mm, and severe (×) when the groove depth exceeded 0.4 mm. In addition, the degree of electrode wear is mild (◯) when the reduction rate from the initial stage of the electrode diameter is less than 10%, moderate (Δ) when 10% or more but less than 30%, and severe (×) when 30% or more. . The results are shown in Table 1.
As is apparent from the results, the metal composition adjusted so that the thermal conductivity of the electrode base material is in the range of 17 to 30 W / m · K is the resistance to channeling and the degree of electrode wear. It can be seen that good results were obtained in all of the durability against wear and the wear resistance of the wear resistant part.
