Ejected by a first recording element substrate having at least a recording element for ejecting achromatic ink, a recording element for ejecting chromatic ink, and a recording element provided on the first recording element substrate. An ink jet recording apparatus, wherein all of the recording elements usable in the monochrome recording mode are provided on the first recording element substrate.   The inks that can be used in the monochrome recording mode are a plurality of types of achromatic inks and one or more types of the chromatic inks, and the first recording element substrate uses the plurality of types of achromatic inks. The inkjet recording apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising: a recording element for discharging and a recording element for discharging the one or more kinds of chromatic ink.   The inkjet recording apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the plurality of types of achromatic ink include a black ink and a gray ink having a lower color material density than the black ink.   The recording head is capable of discharging at least cyan, magenta, and yellow inks, and the one or more chromatic inks that can be used in the monochrome recording mode are light cyan inks having a lower colorant density than the cyan ink. The ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the ink jet recording apparatus is included.   The recording head can eject at least cyan, magenta, and yellow inks, and one or more chromatic inks that can be used in the monochrome recording mode are light magenta inks having a lower colorant density than the magenta ink. The inkjet recording apparatus according to claim 2, comprising:   3. The recording head is capable of discharging at least cyan, magenta, and yellow inks, and the one or more chromatic inks that can be used in the monochrome recording mode include the yellow ink. 6. The ink jet recording apparatus according to any one of 5 to 5.   The second recording element substrate has recording elements for ejecting cyan, magenta, and yellow inks. The first recording element substrate is more than the plurality of types of achromatic inks and cyan inks. 2. The ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a recording element for discharging a light cyan ink having a low color material density and a light magenta ink having a color material density lower than that of the magenta ink.
