Description
The present invention relates to a multimode optical fiber used as an optical fiber for amplification such as an optical fiber amplifier, an optical fiber laser device, and a laser module, and more particularly to a multimode optical fiber suitable for an optical fiber laser that transmits high-power light, etc. The present invention relates to an optical fiber coupler, an optical fiber module, an optical fiber amplifier, an optical fiber laser, and a laser module using the same.
Many proposals have already been disclosed regarding fiber lasers (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
A method for efficiently connecting outputs from a plurality of excitation light sources to a clad pumping fiber is disclosed in, for example, Patent Document 2.
However, when such high-power light is transmitted using an optical fiber, there is a problem that light with high power enters the pumping light source and degrades or damages the pumping light source. 2 to 4 are configuration diagrams illustrating the principle of deterioration and damage of a pumping light source in a conventional optical fiber laser or optical fiber amplifier. In these drawings,
FIG. 2 shows a case of forward pumping. In this apparatus, pumping light from a plurality of pumping
FIG. 3 shows the case of backward pumping. In this apparatus, a plurality of pumping
FIG. 4 shows the case of bidirectional pumping. In this apparatus, a plurality of pumping

In the case of backward pumping, as shown in FIG. 3, light that has been amplified in the rare-earth-doped
Furthermore, in the case of bidirectional excitation shown in FIG. 4, the phenomenon described in both the case of forward excitation and the case of backward excitation occurs, and the

Also, it is preferable that the second clad portion has a low refractive index.
The present invention also relates to an optical fiber amplifier having a rare earth-doped optical fiber doped with a rare earth element as a medium for amplifying signal light having a wavelength λ 1 and a pumping light source having a wavelength λ 2 for exciting the rare-earth doped optical fiber. By using the multimode optical fiber of the present invention, it is possible to reduce the power when the amplified signal light returns to the pumping light source as light without reducing the power of the pumping light.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
FIG. 1 is a configuration diagram illustrating an optical fiber laser using a multimode optical fiber according to the present invention. The optical fiber laser according to this example includes a rare earth-doped
The rare earth-doped
The multimode
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the multimode
The multimode
A more specific example of the multimode
In the present invention, if the difference in loss between the signal light wavelength λ 1 and the pumping light wavelength λ 2 of the multimode
When the multimode
On the other hand, since the wavelength of the signal light amplified by the rare earth-doped
The above-described illustration is merely an example of the present invention, and the present invention is not limited to this, and various modifications and changes can be made. Even if the wavelength of the signal light and the excitation light described above is other than the examples described above, the same effects can be obtained by appropriately changing the type and concentration of the dopant within a range that can be adjusted by those skilled in the art.
The multimode optical fiber of the present invention is not limited to the above-described optical fiber laser, but various devices including a rare earth-doped optical fiber for amplification and a pumping light source, such as an optical fiber module, an optical fiber amplifier, and a laser module. 1 can be used for a part or all of the path connecting the pumping light source and the rare earth-doped optical fiber, or can be used as a pigtail fiber of a laser module. By using the multimode optical fiber of the present invention, in these modules and the like, deterioration and damage of the excitation light source can be prevented by the return light attenuation effect, and the life of the light source can be extended.
Furthermore, the multimode optical fiber of the present invention is produced by fusing and stretching two or more multimode optical fibers or the multimode optical fiber of the present invention and another optical fiber to produce an optical fiber coupler. You can also. The optical fiber coupler thus obtained can be used as an optical fiber coupler for connecting a pumping light source and a rare earth-doped optical fiber, and the deterioration of the pumping light source due to the return light attenuation effect as in the above example. Damage can be prevented and the life of the light source can be extended.
