Abstract
Description
本発明は、電気泳動表示装置などに用いられる電気泳動粒子及びその製造方法に関するものである。 The present invention relates to an electrophoretic particle used in an electrophoretic display device and a method for producing the same.
近年、情報機器の発達にともない、低消費電力且つ薄型の表示素子のニーズが増しており、これらのニーズに合わせた表示素子の研究開発が盛んに行われている。 In recent years, with the development of information equipment, the need for low power consumption and thin display elements has increased, and research and development of display elements that meet these needs has been actively conducted.
One such display element is an electrophoretic display element. The electrophoretic display element includes a pair of substrates arranged with a predetermined gap therebetween, and electrodes are formed on each substrate. The substrate gap is filled with a large number of colored electrophoretic particles exhibiting positive charge and a dispersion medium colored with a color different from the electrophoretic particles. Further, the partition is arranged so as to divide the gap into a large number of pixels along the surface direction of the substrate, and is configured to prevent the uneven distribution of the electrophoretic particles and to define the substrate gap. In such an electrophoretic display element, when a positive voltage is applied to the electrode on the viewer side and a negative voltage is applied to the opposite electrode, the positively charged electrophoretic particles are applied to the opposite electrode. When the display element is viewed from the observer, the same color as the dispersion medium is displayed. On the other hand, when a negative voltage is applied to the electrode on the viewer side and a positive voltage is applied to the electrode on the opposite side, the electrophoretic particles gather to cover the electrode on the viewer side, and the display element from the viewer side Is displayed in the same color as the electrophoretic particles. By performing such driving in units of pixels, an arbitrary image or character is displayed by a large number of pixels.
電気泳動表示素子に用いられる電気泳動粒子は、粒径がそろっていて、着色され、分散媒中で安定して帯電し、かつ分散することが必要であり、さまざまなものが提案されている。 Electrophoretic particles used in electrophoretic display elements have a uniform particle size, are colored, need to be stably charged and dispersed in a dispersion medium, and various types have been proposed.
A suspension polymerization method is known as a method for obtaining particles having a relatively uniform particle size. Patent Document 1 describes a method for producing electrophoretic particles in which a composition in which a colorant is dispersed in a polymerizable monomer is suspended in an aqueous medium and polymerized. The colorant is uniformly formed into a polymerizable monomer. In order to disperse, a method of adding a colorant dispersion medium and a colorant aqueous phase migration inhibitor has been proposed.
In addition, so-called core-shell type electrophoretic particles in which the core particles are coated with another material in order to adjust the physical properties such as the specific particle size and the specific gravity and mechanical strength have been proposed. Patent Document 2 discloses a method in which a core-shell structure is formed by two-stage emulsion suspension polymerization, and a double oxide remaining in the core is reacted with a metal oxide and dyed black.
特許文献3には、顔料粒子の表面に重合性基を導入し、これに高分子鎖を結合させることにより、顔料粒子が高分子鎖層で覆われた構造の電気泳動粒子を得る方法が開示されている。 Patent Document 3 discloses a method of obtaining electrophoretic particles having a structure in which pigment particles are covered with a polymer chain layer by introducing a polymerizable group on the surface of the pigment particles and bonding a polymer chain to the group. Has been.
Many electrophoretic display elements proposed in the past have added a dispersion stabilizer to the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium to prevent the electrophoretic particles from aggregating in the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium. Was imparted with dispersibility. In addition, when the zeta potential of the electrophoretic particles is low, the particles are not sufficiently charged and the particles cannot be stably electrophoresed. Therefore, a charging agent is added to the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium to improve the chargeability. However, there has been a problem that the dispersibility and chargeability of the electrophoretic particles applied by such a method often deteriorate with time.
一方、電気泳動粒子の表面に分散性および帯電性を高めるために高分子鎖を被覆したコアシェル型の電気泳動粒子も提案されているが、従来のコアシェル型構造の電気泳動粒子は、各粒子のシェルの厚みに、製造方法に由来するバラツキが生じ易く、その結果、電気泳動粒子の分散性や帯電性が不安定となり、安定な電気泳動表示を提供することができなかった。 On the other hand, core-shell type electrophoretic particles in which the surface of the electrophoretic particle is coated with a polymer chain in order to increase dispersibility and chargeability have been proposed. The thickness of the shell is likely to vary due to the manufacturing method. As a result, the dispersibility and chargeability of the electrophoretic particles become unstable, and a stable electrophoretic display cannot be provided.
The core-shell type particle manufacturing method using the atom transfer radical polymerization method solves the problem of aligning the particle size and the shell thickness. However, this polymerization method is generally carried out in an organic solvent under high temperature conditions. , Easy to adversely affect the core particles. In addition, harmful metals and expensive organic compounds must be used. When using core-shell type particles produced by an atom transfer radical polymerization method as electrophoretic particles, it is necessary to color them with a desired color and density. In addition, the polymer chain grafted on the particle surface must be designed to exhibit a dispersion function and a charging function in the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium.
本発明者らは、上記課題を解決するために鋭意研究を重ねた結果、極めて温和な環境下で、着色粒子表面に、電気泳動粒子分散媒中で分散機能や帯電機能を示す高分子鎖をグラフト化する方法を見出し、本発明に至った。 As a result of intensive studies to solve the above problems, the present inventors have found that a polymer chain exhibiting a dispersion function or a charging function in an electrophoretic particle dispersion medium is formed on the colored particle surface in an extremely mild environment. A method for grafting was found and the present invention was achieved.
すなわち、本発明の電気泳動粒子は、着色粒子表面に高分子鎖がグラフト化された電気泳動粒子であって、該高分子鎖に光リビングラジカル重合開始基が結合されていることを特徴とする電気泳動粒子である。 That is, the electrophoretic particle of the present invention is an electrophoretic particle in which a polymer chain is grafted on the surface of a colored particle, and a photoliving radical polymerization initiating group is bonded to the polymer chain. Electrophoretic particles.
また、本発明の電気泳動粒子の製造方法は、着色粒子表面に高分子鎖がグラフト化された電気泳動粒子の製造方法であって、該着色粒子表面に、光リビングラジカル重合の開始基を導入する工程、および該開始基から光リビングラジカル重合によって高分子鎖をグラフト化する工程を含み、前記高分子鎖が前記光リビングラジカル重合の開始基を保持していることを特徴とする電気泳動粒子の製造方法である。 The method for producing electrophoretic particles of the present invention is a method for producing electrophoretic particles in which polymer chains are grafted on the surface of the colored particles, and an initiator for photo-living radical polymerization is introduced into the surface of the colored particles. And a step of grafting a polymer chain from the initiating group by photo-living radical polymerization, wherein the polymer chain holds the initiating group for the photo-living radical polymerization. It is a manufacturing method.
In addition, an electrophoretic particle dispersion of the present invention is an electrophoretic particle dispersion characterized by containing the above-described electrophoretic particles and an electrophoretic particle dispersion medium. Furthermore, an electrophoretic display element of the present invention includes a container for storing an electrophoretic particle dispersion containing electrophoretic particles and an electrophoretic particle dispersion medium, a display unit provided in at least a part of the container, and the display. An electrophoretic display element that performs display according to the presence or absence of the electrophoretic particles in the display unit, and a voltage applying unit that causes the electrophoretic particles to move to the unit in accordance with display information. An electrophoretic display element, wherein the electrophoretic particle dispersion is the electrophoretic particle dispersion according to claim 12.
本発明によれば、従来の電気泳動粒子より分散性と帯電性に優れた電気泳動粒子及び該電気泳動粒子を温和な条件で製造する方法を提供することができる。 According to the present invention, it is possible to provide an electrophoretic particle having superior dispersibility and chargeability than conventional electrophoretic particles and a method for producing the electrophoretic particle under mild conditions.

In FIG. 1 (b), the block copolymer grafted on the surface of the colored particles is an example of a diblock copolymer containing two types of polymer chains. As long as a similar effect can be expected, a triblock copolymer containing three kinds of polymers or a block copolymer containing more polymer chains can be applied.
以下、本発明の電気泳動粒子について、その製造法とともに、より詳細に説明する。 Hereinafter, the electrophoretic particles of the present invention will be described in detail together with the production method thereof.
[1]着色粒子の説明
本発明では、着色剤とポリマーから構成される複合体微粒子、あるいは顔料粒子を着色粒子として用いる。以下、本発明で意図する着色粒子の特徴について詳細に説明する。
[1] Description of colored particles In the present invention, composite fine particles composed of a colorant and a polymer, or pigment particles are used as colored particles. Hereinafter, the characteristics of the colored particles intended in the present invention will be described in detail.
[1-1] When the colored particles are composite fine particles As for the composite fine particles composed of the colorant and the polymer, the colorant may be completely encapsulated in the polymer, or a part of the colorant is formed from the polymer. May be on the particle surface. The colorant is typically a pigment-based particle (hereinafter referred to as “pigment particle”) or a dye, and in the case of a pigment particle, one or more pigment particles are included to color the complex particles. In the case of a dye, the dye is mixed and dispersed in the polymer and colored.
In order to produce composite fine particles, first, at least one kind of polymerizable monomer for forming a colorant and composite fine particles, and at least one polymerizable monomer having a functional group for introducing a photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group. And a polymerization initiator are prepared. The functional group for introducing the photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group includes a photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group precursor or a compound having a photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group to react with the photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group on the surface of the composite fine particle. Those that can be fixed while maintaining the polymerization initiation function are used. The photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group precursor has a portion that becomes a photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group through a reaction with a functional group or some other reaction.
なお、光イニファーター重合開始基導入用の官能基を持たない重合性モノマーと、光イニファーター重合開始基導入用の官能基を持つ重合性モノマーのモノマー部分は同一であっても、異なっていてもよい。 The monomer portion of the polymerizable monomer having no functional group for introducing photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group and the polymerizable monomer having a functional group for introducing photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group may be the same or different. Also good.
これらの成分を用いて複合体微粒子用組成物を調製することができる。 A composite fine particle composition can be prepared using these components.
光イニファーター重合開始基導入用の官能基としては、クロロメチル基を挙げることが出来る。これは、クロロメチル基と光イニファーター重合開始基前駆体あるいは光イニファーター重合開始基を含む化合物が温和な条件で反応するためである。ただし、同様の効果を期待できる範囲において、他の官能基であっても適用可能である。 Examples of the functional group for introducing the photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group include a chloromethyl group. This is because a compound containing a chloromethyl group and a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group precursor or a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group reacts under mild conditions. However, other functional groups can be applied as long as the same effect can be expected.
着色剤としては、顔料や染料を使用することが出来る。顔料、染料を単独で使用しても良いし、両者を混合して使用しても良い。両者を混合して使用する場合、顔料と染料の混合比は使用する系に合わせて適宜決めることが出来る。 As the colorant, pigments and dyes can be used. Pigments and dyes may be used alone or in combination. When both are mixed and used, the mixing ratio of the pigment and the dye can be appropriately determined according to the system to be used.
以上の複合体微粒子用組成物から、重合反応を経て複合体微粒子を形成させる。重合法として、懸濁重合法、沈殿重合法、分散重合法、ソープフリー乳化重合法、乳化重合法、ミニエマルション重合法をはじめとする既存の高分子微粒子合成法を適応することが出来る。 From the composition for composite fine particles, composite fine particles are formed through a polymerization reaction. As the polymerization method, existing polymer fine particle synthesis methods such as suspension polymerization method, precipitation polymerization method, dispersion polymerization method, soap-free emulsion polymerization method, emulsion polymerization method, and miniemulsion polymerization method can be applied.
[1-2] When the colored particles are pigment particles As the pigment particles used as the colored particles, organic pigments, inorganic pigments, and the like can be used. The pigment particles preferably have a functional group that reacts with the photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group or the photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group precursor, and the pigment particles not having the functional group are appropriately treated. It is preferable to introduce a functional group. A chloromethyl group can be mentioned as a functional group. This is because the chloromethyl group reacts with the photoiniferter polymerization initiating group precursor or the photoiniferter polymerization initiating group under mild conditions. However, other functional groups can be applied as long as the same effect can be expected.
[2] Introduction of photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group First, photo-iniferter polymerization of the present invention will be described. Photoiniferter polymerization is a polymerization method having the following characteristics (a) to (c), and a polymerization initiating group that realizes these characteristics is referred to as a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group.
(a) Short-lived radicals such as growing radicals exist only by forming covalently bonded products.
(b) The covalent bond has photodissociation and regenerates the growing radical.
(c) At this time, the termination reaction between radicals always occurs so that a similar dissociative covalent bond is formed.
光イニファーター重合開始基として、硫黄系光イニファーター重合開始基を用いることが好ましい。これは、硫黄系光イニファーター重合開始基が光解離を生じやすく、室温あるいはそれ以下の低い温度での重合が可能となることに起因する。特に、N,N-ジエチルジチオカルバメート系イニファーターは、合成や機能化が容易でかつ良好なリビング性を示すことから好適である。 As the photoiniferter polymerization initiating group, a sulfur photoiniferter polymerization initiating group is preferably used. This is due to the fact that the sulfur photoiniferter polymerization initiating group easily undergoes photodissociation and allows polymerization at room temperature or a lower temperature. In particular, the N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate iniferter is suitable because it is easy to synthesize and functionalize and exhibits good living properties.
Next, a method for introducing a photo-iniferter initiating group into the colored particle surface will be described. The colored particles include a functional group that reacts with the photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group or the photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group precursor on the surface thereof. This functional group is reacted with a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group or a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group precursor to add a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group to the surface of the colored particles. This addition reaction differs depending on the combination of the functional group contained in the colorant surface and the photoiniferter polymerization initiating group or photoiniferter polymerization initiating group precursor.
前記付加反応は、1つの化学反応であっても複数の化学反応を組み合わせたものであっても良い。以下、前記官能基がクロロメチル基である場合について、前記付加反応の過程をそれぞれ説明する。 The addition reaction may be a single chemical reaction or a combination of a plurality of chemical reactions. Hereinafter, the process of the addition reaction will be described for each case where the functional group is a chloromethyl group.
図7に示す反応式(I)は前記官能基がクロロメチル基である場合の前記付加反応を例示したものである。反応式(I)では、光イニファーター重合開始基前駆体の例としてN,N-ジチオカルバミン酸ナトリウムを用いているが、前記付加反応はこれらの組み合わせに限定されるものではない。 Reaction formula (I) shown in FIG. 7 illustrates the addition reaction when the functional group is a chloromethyl group. In Reaction Formula (I), sodium N, N-dithiocarbamate is used as an example of a photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group precursor, but the addition reaction is not limited to these combinations.
着色粒子を反応溶媒に分散させた後、反応式(I)に示されるように光イニファーター重合開始基前駆体であるN,N-ジチオカルバミン酸ナトリウムを添加して、着色粒子表面に光イニファーター重合開始基を導入する。反応溶媒としては、着色粒子が分散し、且つ不溶であれば特に限定されない。 After dispersing the colored particles in the reaction solvent, as shown in the reaction formula (I), the photoiniferter polymerization initiation group precursor N, N-dithiocarbamate sodium is added, and the photoiniferter is added to the surface of the colored particles. A polymerization initiating group is introduced. The reaction solvent is not particularly limited as long as the colored particles are dispersed and insoluble.
光イニファーター重合開始基導入用の官能基は、例えばクロロメチル基を有するシランカップリング剤のように、顔料粒子表面に結合可能であり、かつ光イニファーター重合開始基導入用の官能基を有する化合物によって顔料粒子表面に導入することが好ましい。 The functional group for introducing photo-iniferter polymerization initiating groups can be bonded to the surface of pigment particles, for example, a silane coupling agent having a chloromethyl group, and has a functional group for introducing photo-iniferter polymerization initiating groups. It is preferable to introduce into the pigment particle surface by a compound.
[3]着色粒子表面への高分子鎖のグラフト化
光イニファーター重合による、着色粒子表面への高分子鎖のグラフト化について説明する。反応式(I)の光イニファーター重合開始基が導入された着色粒子をコア粒子として、容易にコア粒子表面に鎖長の揃った高分子鎖を形成させることが出来る。
[3] Grafting of polymer chains onto the surface of colored particles The grafting of polymer chains onto the surface of colored particles by photoiniferter polymerization will be described. By using the colored particles into which the photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group of the reaction formula (I) is introduced as the core particles, polymer chains having a uniform chain length can be easily formed on the surface of the core particles.
光イニファーター重合開始基が導入された着色粒子を反応溶媒に分散させた後、グラフト化する高分子鎖を形成する重合性モノマーを添加し、反応系を不活性ガスで置換して光照射することによって光イニファーター重合を行う。 Disperse colored particles with photo-iniferter polymerization initiating groups in a reaction solvent, then add a polymerizable monomer that forms a polymer chain to be grafted, and replace the reaction system with an inert gas and irradiate with light. To perform photo-iniferter polymerization.
不活性ガスとして、窒素ガスやアルゴンガスを使用することができる。照射する光の波長は、使用する光イニファーター重合開始基の種類によって異なる。反応式(I)に例示するN,N-ジチオカルバミン酸ナトリウム由来の光イニファーター重合開始基を有する着色粒子表面に高分子鎖をグラフト化する場合、反応系に300nmから600nmの波長を示す光を照射することによって光イニファーター重合が良好に進行する。 Nitrogen gas or argon gas can be used as the inert gas. The wavelength of the irradiated light varies depending on the type of photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group to be used. When a polymer chain is grafted on the surface of a colored particle having a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group derived from sodium N, N-dithiocarbamate exemplified in the reaction formula (I), the reaction system is irradiated with light having a wavelength of 300 to 600 nm. By irradiation, photo-iniferter polymerization proceeds well.
重合温度は、副反応を抑制するため、室温あるいはそれ以下の温度であることが好ましい。ただし、同様の効果が得られる範囲においてこの温度領域に限定されるわけではない。 The polymerization temperature is preferably room temperature or lower in order to suppress side reactions. However, the temperature range is not limited within a range in which the same effect can be obtained.
高分子鎖のグラフト密度は、着色粒子表面への光イニファーター重合開始基の導入量によって制御することが出来る。また、グラフト化した高分子鎖の鎖長は、重合性モノマーの添加量や重合時間等によって制御することが出来る。 The graft density of the polymer chain can be controlled by the amount of photo-iniferter polymerization initiating groups introduced to the colored particle surface. The chain length of the grafted polymer chain can be controlled by the addition amount of the polymerizable monomer, the polymerization time, and the like.
反応終了後、高分子鎖をグラフト化した着色粒子を洗浄、ろ過、デカンテーション、沈殿分別、遠心分離等、適切な方法によって分離精製して、電気泳動粒子が得られる。 After completion of the reaction, the colored particles grafted with the polymer chain are separated and purified by an appropriate method such as washing, filtration, decantation, precipitation fractionation, and centrifugation to obtain electrophoretic particles.
The surface of the electrophoretic particles thus obtained has a photoiniferter polymerization initiation group bonded to the grafted polymer chain at the end of the polymer chain. By performing the polymerization, a new polymer chain can be grafted onto the surface of the electrophoretic particle. Each of a plurality of polymer chains having different functions such as a dispersion function and a charging function is sequentially formed by photo-iniferter polymerization to form a block copolymer, and a plurality of portions having different functions are formed in one polymer chain. be able to.
[4]高分子鎖の分散機能と帯電機能
電気泳動粒子は、最表面部分が、帯電機能と分散機能を担っている。上記光イニファーター重合で得られる高分子鎖についてもその機能の発現が要請される。以下この点について説明する。
[4] Dispersion function and charging function of polymer chain The outermost surface portion of the electrophoretic particles has a charging function and a dispersion function. The function of the polymer chain obtained by the photo-iniferter polymerization is also required to be expressed. This point will be described below.
まず、分散機能について説明する。高分子鎖が分散機能を有するためには、電気泳動粒子分散媒と親和性の高い高分子鎖を選択することが必要である。親和性が高いとは、高分子鎖と電気泳動粒子分散媒が相分離することなく、相溶性に優れていることを意味し、高分子鎖は、電気泳動粒子分散媒中で広がりを持つことによって、粒子間の凝集を防止する立体排除効果を発現する。 First, the distributed function will be described. In order for the polymer chain to have a dispersion function, it is necessary to select a polymer chain having a high affinity with the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium. High affinity means that the polymer chain and the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium do not undergo phase separation and have excellent compatibility, and the polymer chain has a spread in the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium. Thus, a steric exclusion effect that prevents aggregation between particles is exhibited.
分散機能を有する高分子鎖となる重合性モノマーとしては、上記したように、その重合体が電気泳動粒子分散媒と親和性の高い高分子鎖であることが求められ、例えば、1−ヘキセン、1−ヘプテン、1−オクテン、1−デセン、ブタジエン、イソプレン、イソブチレン等が挙げられ、これらを単独または2種以上を混合して用いてもよい。但し本発明に適用可能な重合成モノマーはこれらに限定される訳ではない。 As described above, the polymerizable monomer that becomes a polymer chain having a dispersion function is required to be a polymer chain having a high affinity for the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium, such as 1-hexene, Examples include 1-heptene, 1-octene, 1-decene, butadiene, isoprene, isobutylene, and the like. These may be used alone or in admixture of two or more. However, the polysynthetic monomer applicable to the present invention is not limited to these.
次に、帯電機能について説明する。帯電機能を有する高分子鎖となる重合性モノマーとしては、塩基性の重合性モノマー及び酸性の重合性モノマー、並びにフッ素系の重合性モノマーから選択して使用することができる。これらのモノマーを必要に応じて2種以上を組合わせて用いてもよい。 Next, the charging function will be described. As the polymerizable monomer to be a polymer chain having a charging function, a basic polymerizable monomer, an acidic polymerizable monomer, and a fluorine-based polymerizable monomer can be selected and used. Two or more of these monomers may be used in combination as necessary.
Examples of basic polymerizable monomers include methyl (meth) acrylate, ethyl (meth) acrylate, propyl (meth) acrylate, pentyl (meth) acrylate, hexyl (meth) acrylate, and (meth) acrylic. 2-ethylhexyl acid, heptyl (meth) acrylate, octyl (meth) acrylate, nonyl (meth) acrylate, decyl (meth) acrylate, dodecyl (meth) acrylate, tetradecyl (meth) acrylate, (meth) Hexadecyl acrylate, octadecyl (meth) acrylate, aminomethyl (meth) acrylate, aminoethyl (meth) acrylate, N, N-dimethylaminomethyl (meth) acrylate, N, N-dimethyl (meth) acrylate Aminoethyl, (meth) acrylamide, N, N-dimethyl (meth) acrylami , May be mentioned N, N-diethyl (meth) acrylamide, 4-vinylpyridine. However, the polysynthetic monomer applicable to the present invention is not limited to these.
塩基性の重合性モノマーからなる高分子鎖に、酸性添加剤を添加すると、これらの物質間で酸−塩基相互作用が働き、粒子にプラス帯電を付与することができる。また、塩基性の重合性モノマーと酸性添加剤の種類を選択することによって、更に酸性添加剤の添加量を調整することによって、帯電機能を有する高分子鎖が分散機能も兼ね備えることができるので、このような場合には、分散機能を有する高分子鎖を粒子にグラフト化しなくても良い。 When an acidic additive is added to a polymer chain composed of a basic polymerizable monomer, an acid-base interaction works between these substances, and a positive charge can be imparted to the particles. In addition, by selecting the type of the basic polymerizable monomer and the acidic additive, and further adjusting the addition amount of the acidic additive, the polymer chain having a charging function can also have a dispersion function. In such a case, the polymer chain having a dispersing function may not be grafted to the particles.
酸性添加剤としては、電気泳動粒子分散媒に溶解する酸性物質が好ましく、例えば、ロジン酸、ロジン酸エステル、ロジン酸誘導体、ポリ(メタ)アクリル酸、ポリイソブチレンコハク酸無水物等を使用することができる。酸性添加剤の添加量は、その種類によって適宜決められる。 As the acidic additive, an acidic substance that dissolves in the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium is preferable. For example, rosin acid, rosin acid ester, rosin acid derivative, poly (meth) acrylic acid, polyisobutylene succinic anhydride, and the like are used. Can do. The addition amount of the acidic additive is appropriately determined depending on the type.
On the other hand, as an acidic polymerizable monomer, (meth) acrylic acid, 2-butenoic acid (crotonic acid), 3-butenoic acid (vinyl acetic acid), 3-methyl-3-butenoic acid, 3-pentenoic acid, 4- Pentenoic acid, 4-methyl-4-pentenoic acid, 4-hexenoic acid, 5-hexenoic acid, 5-methyl-5-hexenoic acid, 5-heptenoic acid, 6-heptenoic acid, 6-methyl-6-heptenoic acid, 6-octenoic acid, 7-octenoic acid, 7-methyl-7-octenoic acid, 7-nonenoic acid, 8-nonenoic acid, 8-methyl-8-nonenoic acid, 8-decenoic acid, 9-decenoic acid, 3- Phenyl-2-propenoic acid (cinnamic acid), carboxymethyl (meth) acrylate, carboxyethyl (meth) acrylate, vinyl benzoic acid, vinylphenylacetic acid, vinylphenylpropionic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, Len succinic acid (itaconic acid), hydroxystyrene, styrene sulfonic acid, vinyl toluene sulfonic acid, vinyl sulfonic acid, sulfomethyl (meth) acrylate, 2-sulfoethyl (meth) acrylate, 2-propene-1-sulfonic acid, 2-methyl- Examples thereof include 2-propene-1-sulfonic acid and 3-butene-1-sulfonic acid. However, the polysynthetic monomer applicable to the present invention is not limited to these.
酸性の重合性モノマーからなる高分子鎖に、塩基性添加剤を添加すると、これらの物質間で酸−塩基相互作用が働き、粒子にマイナス帯電を付与することができる。また、酸性の重合性モノマーと塩基性添加剤の種類を選択することによって、更に塩基性添加剤の添加量を調整することによって、帯電機能を有する高分子鎖が分散機能も兼ね備えることができるので、このような場合には、分散機能を有する高分子鎖を粒子にグラフト化しなくても良い。 When a basic additive is added to a polymer chain composed of an acidic polymerizable monomer, an acid-base interaction works between these substances, and a negative charge can be imparted to the particles. In addition, by selecting the type of acidic polymerizable monomer and basic additive, and further adjusting the addition amount of the basic additive, the polymer chain having a charging function can also have a dispersing function. In such a case, the polymer chain having a dispersing function may not be grafted to the particles.
The basic additive is preferably a basic substance that dissolves in the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium, such as polyisobutylene succinimide, polyvinyl pyridine, pyridine, lecithin, polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene oxide, polymethyl methacrylate, polydecyl methacrylate. Polydodecyl methacrylate, polyoctadecyl methacrylate, polyacrylamide, polyester, polyether and the like can be used. However, the polysynthetic monomer applicable to the present invention is not limited to these.
塩基性添加剤の添加量は、その種類によって適宜決められる。 The addition amount of the basic additive is appropriately determined depending on the type.
Fluoropolymerizable monomers include trifluoromethyl (meth) acrylate, 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl (meth) acrylate, pentafluoroethyl (meth) acrylate, heptafluoropropyl (meth) acrylate, 3,3 , 3-trifluoropropyl (meth) acrylate, nonafluorobutyl (meth) acrylate, 3,3,4,4,4-pentafluorobutyl (meth) acrylate, undecafluoropentyl (meth) acrylate, 4,4 Examples include 5,5,5-pentafluoropentyl (meth) acrylate, tridecafluorohexyl (meth) acrylate, pentadecafluoroheptyl (meth) acrylate, and the like. However, the polysynthetic monomer applicable to the present invention is not limited to these.
フッ素系の重合性モノマーからなる高分子鎖は、電気陰性度の大きなフッ素原子を有することによって粒子にマイナス帯電を付与することができる。 A polymer chain made of a fluorine-based polymerizable monomer can impart a negative charge to particles by having a fluorine atom having a large electronegativity.
フッ素系の重合性モノマーからなる高分子鎖は、電気泳動粒子分散媒に対してあまり親和性が高くないので、分散機能を有する高分子鎖をフッ素系高分子鎖にブロック共重合しておくことが好ましい。 Since polymer chains composed of fluorine-based polymerizable monomers do not have a high affinity for the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium, block copolymerization of polymer chains having a dispersing function with fluorine-based polymer chains is required. Is preferred.
グラフト化される高分子鎖は、分子量分布指数(重量平均分子量/数平均分子量)が1.8以下に制御された高分子鎖であることが好ましく、分子量分布指数は1.5以下が更に好ましく、1.3以下がより好ましい。即ち、グラフト化される高分子鎖の分子量分布指数が1.8を超える場合、鎖長が揃っているとは言い難く、また、電気泳動粒子の分散性や帯電性にバラツキが生じ易くなる場合がある。 The polymer chain to be grafted is preferably a polymer chain in which the molecular weight distribution index (weight average molecular weight / number average molecular weight) is controlled to 1.8 or less, and the molecular weight distribution index is more preferably 1.5 or less. 1.3 or less is more preferable. That is, when the molecular weight distribution index of the polymer chain to be grafted exceeds 1.8, it is difficult to say that the chain lengths are uniform, and the dispersion and chargeability of the electrophoretic particles are likely to vary. There is.
また、高分子鎖の数平均分子量は、分散機能型か帯電機能型によって適宜決めれば良いが、高分子鎖が分散機能型の場合、500から1000000の範囲が好ましく、更に1000から500000が好ましい。高分子鎖の数平均分子量が500未満であると、分散機能を発現することが難しく、高分子鎖の数平均分子量が1000000を超えると、電気泳動分散媒に対する溶解性が低下するので好ましくない。 Further, the number average molecular weight of the polymer chain may be appropriately determined depending on the dispersion function type or the charging function type, but when the polymer chain is the dispersion function type, a range of 500 to 1000000 is preferable, and 1000 to 500000 is more preferable. When the number average molecular weight of the polymer chain is less than 500, it is difficult to develop a dispersion function, and when the number average molecular weight of the polymer chain exceeds 1,000,000, the solubility in the electrophoretic dispersion medium decreases, which is not preferable.

The composite fine particle composition is charged into a suspension medium obtained by dispersing calcium phosphate (90 parts by weight) in an aqueous sodium sulfate solution (1800 parts by weight) known at 0.05% by weight. This is stirred at high speed using a homogenizer to prepare a uniform suspension. The average particle size of the suspended composite fine particle composition is 1.5 μm. Next, suspension polymerization is performed at 80 ° C. in a nitrogen atmosphere to obtain colored particles in which chloromethyl groups are localized on the particle surface.

実施例[1-1]で合成した複合体微粒子を水中に分散させた後、氷冷する。次に、複合体微粒子を分散させた水中に、M.M-ジエチルジチオカルバミン酸ナトリウム水溶液を滴下することによって、複合体微粒子表面に光イニファーター重合開始基を導入する。
[1-2] Introduction of photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group The composite fine particles synthesized in Example [1-1] are dispersed in water and then cooled with ice. Next, a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group is introduced onto the surface of the composite fine particle by dropping an aqueous MM-diethyldithiocarbamate aqueous solution into the water in which the composite fine particle is dispersed.
[1-3] Synthesis of electrophoretic particles After dispersing fine particles of photoiniferter polymerization initiator in dimethyl sulfoxide, dodecyl acrylate is added to replace the reaction system with nitrogen gas and light irradiation Thus, photoiniferter polymerization of dodecyl acrylate is carried out at room temperature for a predetermined time. In addition, benzyl N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate is added in advance to the reaction system as a free polymerization initiating species so as to be an indicator of the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the polymer chain grafted on the surface of the composite fine particles. A 400 W high-pressure UV lamp is used for light irradiation, the irradiation wavelength is 312 nm to 577 nm, and the peak wavelength is 365 nm.
重合終了後、洗浄、乾燥、分級工程を経て、目的とする電気泳動粒子を得る。その平均粒径は1.7μmである。 After completion of the polymerization, the target electrophoretic particles are obtained through washing, drying, and classification steps. Its average particle size is 1.7 μm.
The synthesized electrophoretic particles are well dispersed in tetrahydrofuran, which suggests that dodecyl polyacrylate is grafted on the surface of the composite fine particles. Furthermore, it can be confirmed by FT-IR that polydecyl acrylate is grafted on the surface of the composite fine particles. In addition, when the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the polymer chain formed from benzyl N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate added as a free starting species were measured, the number average molecular weight was about 80,000 and the molecular weight distribution index was 1.29. From this, it can be confirmed that the polymer chain grafted on the surface of the composite fine particle is a polymer chain having a uniform chain length. When the electrophoretic particles are evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it can be confirmed that sulfur atoms derived from the photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group are present in the vicinity of the surface of the electrophoretic particles. Furthermore, it can be confirmed by FT-IR that a photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group exists on the particle surface. In photo-iniferter polymerization, a photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group is bonded to the formed polymer chain end. From this, the results obtained from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and FT-IR indicate that a photoiniferter polymerization initiating group is bonded to the grafted polymer chain.

Further, this chloromethyl group and sodium N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate are reacted in water at room temperature to introduce a photo-iniferter polymerization initiating group on the surface of the titanium oxide particles.

[4-2] Synthesis of electrophoretic particles Disperse titanium oxide particles with photo-iniferter polymerization initiating groups in dimethyl sulfoxide, add dodecyl acrylate, replace the reaction system with nitrogen gas, and irradiate with light Thus, photoiniferter polymerization of dodecyl acrylate is carried out at room temperature for a predetermined time. In addition, benzyl N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate is added in advance to the reaction system as a free polymerization initiating species so as to be an indicator of the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the polymer chain grafted on the surface of the titanium oxide particles. A 400 W high-pressure UV lamp is used for light irradiation, the irradiation wavelength is 312 nm to 577 nm, and the peak wavelength is 365 nm.
重合終了後、洗浄、乾燥、分級工程を経て、目的とする電気泳動粒子を得る。 After completion of the polymerization, the target electrophoretic particles are obtained through washing, drying, and classification steps.
The synthesized electrophoretic particles are well dispersed in tetrahydrofuran, which suggests that polydecyl acrylate is grafted on the surface of the titanium oxide particles. Furthermore, it can be confirmed by FT-IR that dodecyl polyacrylate is grafted on the surface of the titanium oxide particles. In addition, when the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the polymer chain formed from benzyl N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate added as a free starting species were measured, the number average molecular weight was about 70,000, and the molecular weight distribution index was 1.25. From this, it can be confirmed that the polymer chain grafted on the surface of the titanium oxide particles is a polymer chain having a uniform chain length. When the electrophoretic particles are evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it can be confirmed that sulfur atoms derived from the photo-iniferter polymerization initiation group are present in the vicinity of the surface of the electrophoretic particles. Furthermore, it can be confirmed by FT-IR that photoiniferter polymerization or an initiating group is present on the surface of the electrophoretic particle.

The grafted polydecyl acrylate imparts a positive charge to the electrophoretic particles by acid-base interaction with rosin acid. In addition, the grafted polydecyl acrylate exhibits a dispersion function by spreading in the electrophoretic particle dispersion medium.
