従来から、鋼板製自動車用部品等の製造において、ホットプレス方法により高強度部品を製造することが知られている。このホットプレス方法では、加熱された鋼板を成形金型との接触冷却によって焼き入れを行うため、プレス下死点で数秒間の静止保持が必要となる。一方、プレスマシンとしては、油圧シリンダを用いた油圧式タイプと、クランク機構やサーボモータを用いた機械式タイプの二つのタイプがあるが、前記の数秒間の静止保持を実現するには、型締荷重の大きな油圧シリンダを用いる必要があった。   2. 従って、高さが低くコンパクトな設計で、また高速作動性にも優れており、しかもプレス下死点での静止保持が可能で確実にホットプレスを行うことができる新規なホットプレス方法およびプレス装置の開発が望まれているのが現状である。

次に、前述したプレス装置によりホットプレスする方法について説明する。
先ず、図1に示されるように、ホットな状態にある鋼板20を上下一対の金型1、2間にセットし、次いで、図2に示されるように、上型1を下降させて金型1、2間で所定形状にプレス成形する点は従来のホットプレス方法と基本的には同じである。
そして本発明では、図2に示される状態において、高速昇降装置5により駆動する上型1をプレス下死点まで降下させて鋼板20を上下一対の金型1、2間で所定形状にプレスした後、低速高荷重昇降装置6により駆動する下型2をわずかに上昇させて静止保持し焼き入れするのである。
図3は、スライド3およびボルスタ4の位置と成形時間の関係を示すグラフである。この図3のグラフから、スライド3を高速で降下させて鋼板20を金型1、2間で所定形状にプレス成形した状態で、直ちにボルスタ4をわずかに上昇させて高荷重の負荷をかけた状態で静止保持(6〜10秒程度)し、金型との接触冷却をして焼き入れしていることがわかる。
