Description
本発明はマイクロ流体デバイスに関する。より詳細には、本発明は、マイクロ流体構造に適合する静電封止デバイスに関する。
マイクロ流体構造は一般に分析装置に使用されている。近年の親和性の表面アレイ技術の急速な進歩により、マイクロ流体構造を親和性のアレイと共に使用する必要性が増大している。現在においては、電子製品を小型化するために半導体業界で開発された工具を使用すれば複雑なマイクロ流体システムを安価に量産することができる。
マイクロ流体デバイスは、通常、多層積層構造中に構築され、積層構造の各層には積層材料から作られた構造とチャネルが含まれ、流体が流れるミクロスケールの空隙、即ちチャネルが形成されている。ミクロスケールのチャネルは、一般に、500 μm未満、代表的には約0.1μmから約500 μmの範囲の少なくとも1つの内部断面寸法を有する流体経路として画定されている。
通常、各層の表面構造は、パターン化処理、パターニング処理により製造される。マイクロ工学において使用されている伝統的なパターン化技術は、光電子ビームリソグラフィーである。パターン化された層は相互にボンディング又は封止されてマイクロ流体構造が形成されている。例えば、相互に押しつけられた場合にマイクロ流体チャネル系の少なくとも一部をその間に画定することになる第1及び第2の平坦面部材を有するマイクロ流体チャネル組立体の封止デバイスが公知である(例えば特許文献1参照)。
代替的には、マイクロ流体構造は、射出成型、キャスティング及び加熱エンボス加工のような従来のプラスチック/セラミック複製技術を利用して製造することができる。さらに、試料又は試薬を基板の特定領域へと運ぶために可動式マイクロ流体部品を使用することができる。表面にパターン化された空洞を有するパターン化デバイスが公知である(例えば特許文献2及び3参照)。このデバイスを基板の表面に取り付け、パターン化された空洞中にパターン化流体を満たすことにより、基板をパターン化することができる。
生化学分析用の剥離可能及び再封止可能なパターン化デバイスが公知である(例えば特許文献4及び5参照)。これらの剥離可能及び再封止可能なデバイスは、自己密封部材を利用し、これを基板の表面に貼り付け、さらに除去して、検出処理の性能、効率を助長する平坦な表面をもたらす。
上述した全ての場合において、パターン化デバイスと基板の間が封止されるように、パターン化デバイスは外から適用される機械的な力により基板へと押しつけられなければならない。したがって、パターン化デバイスと基板の間における封止形成に必要な機械的な力を生じさせるために、締め具のような付加的な構成要素が必要となる。剥離可能及び再封止可能なパターン化デバイスの場合、パターン化デバイスは、機械的な力により取り除かれ、さらに再封止処理の間に、再度取り付けられなければならない。この除去と再封止処理は、しばしばパターン化デバイスや基板上のパターン化された表面に損傷を与えることがある。
したがって、取り付け及び取り外しが容易かつ迅速に行うことができるパターン化デバイスが必要とされているのである。
本発明は、静電封止デバイスを有するマイクロ流体構造を開示する。静電封止デバイスは、第1の電極と、この第1の電極に対向する第2の電極を含む。少なくとも一方の電極は、他方の電極に対向する弾性を有する層を含む。第2の電極は、2つの電極間の電圧差に応答して、第1の電極に向かって移動し、第1の電極と封止を形成する。
本発明は、静電封止デバイスをマイクロチャネル内に有するマイクロ流体構造をさらに開示する。静電封止デバイスは、マイクロチャネルの長さに沿って配置されている一対の又はそれより多い電極対を含む。電極の各対は、第1の電極、及び第1の電極に対向する第2の電極を含む。電極の各対において、少なくとも一方の電極が弾性を有する弾性層により覆われ、そして第2の電極は2つの電極間の電圧差に応答して、第1の電極に向かって移動し、第1の電極と封止を形成することができる。
本発明は、マイクロ流体構造の2つの構成要素間に封止を形成するための方法をさらに開示する。第1の電極を有する第1の構成要素、及び第2の電極を含む第2の構成要素が設けられる。電極の少なくとも一方は、外部に弾性を有する弾性層を有する。第1の構成要素は、電極を対置させて、第2の構成要素に対向して配置されている。電極間に電圧差が適用され、これらの電極間に封止が形成される。
静電封止デバイスは、従来、マイクロ流体構造の2つの構成要素間に機械的な力を適用するために使用されている機械部品の必要性を排除し、よってマイクロ流体構造の複雑性、そしてマイクロ流体構造の光信号との潜在的な干渉を低減する。さらに、封止は、電圧を適用し及びそれを除去することによって、容易に確立したり、解除したりすることができる。
本発明は静電封止デバイスを有するマイクロ流体構造(200、300、400、500、600)に関する。この静電封止デバイスは、第1の電極(102)と、この第1の電極に対向する第2の電極(104)を含む。これらの電極の少なくとも一方が、他の電極に対向する弾性層(106)を有する。2つの電極の間の電位差に応答して、第2の電極が、第1の電極に向かって移動し、第1の電極と封止を形成することができる。本発明の静電封止デバイスは、従来の、マイクロ流体構造の2つの構成要素の間に機械的な力を生じさせるのに利用される機械的な構成要素の必要性を排除し、したがってマイクロ流体構造の複雑さを低減し、マイクロ流体構造の光信号との潜在的な干渉を低減する。さらに封止は、電圧をONとし、OFFとすることによって、簡単に確立し、解除することができる。また静電封止デバイスを、バルブ、ポンプ又はこれらの組合せとして使用することができ、マイクロ流体構造のマイクロチャネル内の流体の流れを制御することができる。
以下の詳細な説明は以下の添付図を参照するが、図中の同様の参照番号は同様の要素を示す。
封止前の状態にある静電封止デバイス100の一実施例を図1Aに示す。静電封止デバイス100は電極102及び電極104を含む。各電極の外側表面は弾性を有する弾性層106により覆われている。封止前の状態において、静電封止デバイス100は、2つの弾性層からなる絶縁性の平行平板コンデンサとして形成され、2つの弾性層は、誘電率がε、合計の厚みがb0、間隙の幅がzである。用途に応じて、この間隙は空気又は流体により満たされる。
電極102と電極104の間に電圧が適用されると、電極間に電界が生じる。電界は静電封止デバイス100に内部の静電力fを生じさせ、この力により電極102及び104は、相互に引っ張り合い、接触する。
図1Aに示すように、平行な電極102及び104の間の領域は、2つの弾性層106により充填されているが、この2つの弾性層は、誘電率ε、合計の厚みb0であり、誘電率ε0、幅zを有する間隙を含む。電極102及び104の間の合計の距離b0+zは、電極板の長さ方向の寸法と比較して小さく、このため周辺の電界を無視することができる。したがって、弾性層106及びギャップ内の電界は一様である。電極102及び104の間に電圧Vが適用されると、電極102に作用する静電力fは次のように表される。

Cは電極102及び104の間の静電容量であり、Aは電極102及び104の表面積である(電極102及び104が異なる寸法を有する場合、Aはより小さな電極の表面積である)。

式(3)は、fが負の数になっており、これは電極102の一方の極性の電荷が電極104のもう一方の極性の電荷に引き寄せられているという事実を反映している。
図1Bは、電極102及び104の間に電圧を適用した結果、封止状態となった静電封止デバイス100を示す図である。封止状態にあっては、間隙の厚みzは零(0)となり、誘電率ε0はεに等しく、電極102及び104の間の距離はbとなる。封止が作られている場合の弾性層106は圧縮されるため、bは弾性層106が非圧縮状態にある合計の厚みを示すb0よりも小さくなる。電極102及び104の間の静電気による静電圧力pは、以下のように表される。

式(4)によれば、静電圧力pは、電極102及び104の間に適用されている電圧の二乗に比例し、弾性層106の厚みbの二乗に反比例する。表1は、電界強度が100から400 mV/μmの範囲にあり、弾性層106の材料の誘電率εが空気の誘電率(ε0=8.854×10−12F/m)の2倍であることを仮定した場合の、異なる弾性層の厚みに対して生じる静電圧力pを列挙したものである。
図1A及び図1Bに示す実施例において、各電極102及び104は、それぞれの弾性層106によって覆われている。しかしながら、一方の電極のみが弾性層106に覆われている静電封止デバイス100の実施例であっても、弾性層で覆われていない電極が他方の電極を覆う弾性層としっかり封止を形成できる限りにおいて、適正に機能し、また、動作中に電極102が流体に晒されることになる実施例においては、流体が電極102と接地との間に導電性の経路を作ってしまうことがないように、電極102は絶縁性の材料で被覆されている。
表1に列挙した条件下で生じる静電圧力pは、2つの弾性層106の間(両方の電極が弾性層に覆われている場合)、単一の弾性層と電極表面の間(一方の電極のみ弾性層で覆われている場合)、又は単一の弾性層と、ガラス、プラスチック又は金属のような材料の基板の間(一方の電極が基板中に埋め込まれている場合)にしっかりとした封止を形成するのに十分なものであるため、静電封止デバイス100は、外部からの機械的な力の適用を必要とすることなく、封止を形成することができる。単に電圧を電極102及び104の間に適用することだけで封止を形成することができ、そして電極102から電圧を除去する、又は電極102を接地することにより封止を解消することができるので、静電封止デバイス100は、複数のマイクロ流体構造を基板に対して配置することを必要とする用途に対して理想的である。さらに、封止前の状況において、電極間の精密な位置合わせ必要としない。電圧が適用されると、電極はこれらの間に生じた静電的な引力により自動的に位置合わせされる傾向を有する。
図2A〜図2D及び図3A〜図3Gは、先に説明した静電封止デバイスの実施例を組み込んだ本発明に基づくマイクロ流体構造の幾つかの可能な実施例を示す。図2Aは、間に封止を形成することができる2つの構成要素を有するマイクロ流体構造200の一実施例の断面図である。この実施例においては、移動可能な構造108が基板110上に一時的に封止される。基板110は、例えばDNA又はタンパク質のアレイを支持する親和性の表面112を含む。移動可能な構造108はマイクロ流体チャネル114を画定している。電極102は移動可能な構造108の面上に配置され、電極104は基板110の面上に配置されている。
本実施例においては、電極104のみが弾性層106により覆われている。弾性層106は、電極102及び電極104の間に封止が形成された後、もたらされるマイクロ流体チャネル114内に配置される液体から、電極102の主面を絶縁する。マイクロチャネル114内の流体が電極104の側面から接地への導電性の経路をもたらすことを防ぐために、電極102を薄い絶縁材料の層、又は弾性層106(図2Aには図示せず)で覆うこともできる。
電極102を電極104と位置合わせし、電極102と電極104の間に電圧を適用することによって、移動可能な構造108を基板110に取り付けることができる。電極間の静電力が、電極104の表面を覆う弾性層106へと電極102を引き寄せる。電極102と、電極104の弾性層106との間の接触により、移動可能な構造108と基板110の間に封止が形成される。
マイクロ流体構造200を形成するために移動可能な構造108と基板110を付着させることによって、マイクロ流体チャネル114の開放部分が閉鎖され、これによって試薬、緩衝剤、検体等を通過、送り出すことが可能となると共に、基板110の親和性の表面112上で他の処理を実施することができる。
図2Bはマイクロ流体構造300の他の実施例を示すものであるが、この実施例では、電極102が移動可能な構造108の面上に配置され、電極102の露出面が弾性層106で被覆されている。電極104は、基板110の面上に配置され、如何なる弾性層にも覆われていない。この実施例においては、弾性層106が、マイクロ流体チャネル114内に配置される流体から電極102を完全に絶縁している。
図2Cは、マイクロ流体構造400の他の実施例を示すが、この実施例では、電極104が基板110中に埋め込まれている。電極104は、基板110の製造工程において埋め込むことができる。代替的に、電極104を基板110の面上に付着し、その後基板110と同じ材料、又は異なる材料の薄膜でその表面を覆うこともできる。この基板構造は、検出処理の実行を助長する平坦な表面を提供する。
図2Dは、マイクロ流体構造500の他の実施例を示すが、この実施例では、移動可能な構造108及び基板110の対向面が合致し噛み合う造作にパターン化され、電極102及び104がそれぞれ移動可能な構造108及び基板110に整合的に設けられている。電極102及び104の少なくとも一方が、弾性層106により覆われている。この噛み合う造作は、封止の強度と密封性の両方を増大させ、移動可能な構造108と基板110の間の位置合わせを助長する。電極の輪郭は、噛み合う構造の角へ電界を集中させる。噛み合う構造の角を丸めることにより、最大電界勾配が低減され、これらの角における静電破壊を防ぐことができる。
上述した実施例において、基板110及び移動可能なパターン化された構造108を、特定の用途で要求される熱的条件、機械的条件、化学的条件及び電気的な絶縁条件に適合する有機材料、無機材料又はこれらの組み合わせを利用して製造することができる。有機材料を使った例として、ポリスチレン、ポリプロピレン、ポリイミド、環状オレフィンコポリマー(COC)及びポリエーテルエーテルケトン(PEEK)を挙げることができるが、これらに限定されない。無機材料を使った例として、ガラス、セラミック、酸化物、結晶質材料及び金属を挙げることができるが、これらに限定されない。
電極102及び104は、典型的には、導電性材料の1つ又はそれ以上の層の薄膜から構成されている。電極の厚みは、典型的には、20 nmから500 μmの範囲、より代表的には100 nmから5μmの範囲にある。一実施例において、電極102及び104は、それぞれに金、銀、白金、パラジウム、銅、アルミニウム又はこれらの金属の1つ又はそれ以上を含む合金のような金属からなる1層又はそれ以上の層から構成されている。他の実施例において、電極102及び104はインジウム錫酸化物(ITO)の層を含む。また電極102及び104は、1層又はそれ以上の層のそれぞれに弾性を有する導電性材料、又はポリアニリン及びポリピロールのような弾性を有する導電性ポリマー材料を含む。一実施例において、移動可能な構造108及び基板110の一方又は両方が、導電性ポリマー、不純物添加シリコン又は金属のような導電性材料から製造されている。この実施例において、移動可能な構造108又は基板110の全体が、それぞれ電極102又は104として作用する。
電極102及び104の形状は、典型的には、内部チャネル圧力の所定の分布に対して適正な封止力をもたらすように最適化されている。また電極の形状は、基板110の主面の面と平行な方向で、基板110と移動可能な構造108の間の自動的な位置合わせをもたらすことができるように最適化することができる。
弾性層106の材料は、いずれかの好適な弾性を有する絶縁性材料とすることができる。その特性が全ての用途において有利であるとは限らないが、弾性層106の材料は、高いアーク抵抗と高い誘電率を有し、その用途に適合した化学的な特性を有し、疎水性であると有利である。弾性層106の材料の例として、ゴム、熱可塑性ゴム、シリコンゴム、フルオロエラストマー、アクリル、COC、ウレタン、ポリメタクリル酸メチル(PMMA)、ポリカーボネート、ポリテトラフルオロエチレン、ポリ塩化ビニール(PVC)、ポリジメチルシロキサン(PDMS)、ポリスルホン、シロキサン又はポリアミドを挙げることができるが、これらに限定されない。材料の選択は、マイクロ流体デバイス及び検定法により異なる。弾性層106の材料を、基板表面上、電極上、又はそれら両方の上にスピンコーティング、又はスタンピングすることができる。
マイクロ流体デバイスの実施例において、その構成要素を、用途の光学的な要件に応じて透明に、反射するように又は不透明にすることができる。
図3Aは、静電封止デバイスの一実施例を組み込んだ、本発明によるマイクロ流体構造の他の実施例を示す。この実施例においては、静電封止デバイス310、312及び316が、マイクロ流体構造600のマイクロチャネル302、304及び306で、またマイクロチャンネル302と304の間、マイクロチャンネル302と306の間で、流体の流れを調節するのに使用されている。静電封止デバイス310及び312はそれぞれ、マイクロチャネル304及び306の入力端部に配置され、マイクロチャネル304及び306のどちらも選択的に開閉可能であり、したがってマイクロ流体構造600の異なる箇所における流体の動きを制御することができる。
図3Bは、線3B−3Bに沿って切断した断面図であり、静電封止デバイス310の一実施例を示す。静電封止デバイス312は、静電封止デバイス310と構造が類似しているため、別途説明はしない。本実施例において、静電封止デバイス310は、断面形状が略U字又は略V字形であるマイクロチャネル304に配置され、マイクロチャネル304はその長さ方向の一部分をチャネル電極105により被覆されている。チャネル電極は弾性層107で被覆されている。マイクロチャネル304の長さ方向の一部分は、弾性を有する弾性膜電極103で覆われている。膜電極103のチャネル電極105に対向する表面は、弾性層106により被覆されている。
弾性膜電極103とチャネル電極105との間に適用される電圧は、弾性膜電極103をチャネル電極105へと矢印Cにより示す方向に引っ張る電界を確立する。マイクロチャネル304はU字形又はV字形の断面を有しているため、膜電極103とチャネル電極105の間の距離はマイクロチャネル304の中心において最大であり、マイクロチャネル304の端部に向かうにつれて小さくなる。したがって静電圧力pは、電極103及び105の間の距離に反比例するため、マイクロチャネル304の端部で最大となる(上記式(2)参照)。
図3Cに示すように、マイクロチャネル304の端部に近接する弾性膜電極103の部分は、マイクロチャネル304の端部における静電圧力pが必要とされる大きさに達すると、チャネル電極105の方に引っ張られる。弾性膜電極103のマイクロチャネル304へと向かう移動は、弾性膜電極103とチャネル電極105の間の距離を縮め、電極103及び105の間の静電界強度を増大させる。そして、静電界強度が増大することによって、弾性膜電極103のマイクロチャネルへと向かうさらなる移動が生じる。したがって、弾性膜電極103及びチャネル電極105の間の接触は、まず、マイクロチャネル304の端部において生じ、そして徐々にマイクロチャネルの中心に向かって進む。電極103及び105の相互を接触させる相対的な移動は、2つのジッパーが、マイクロチャネル304の対向する端部から動き始め、マイクロチャネルの中心部でぶつかるような状況に似ている。
弾性膜電極103とチャネル電極105が接触するに至る上述の「ジッパー」効果は、弾性膜電極103及び弾性層106の弾性と共に、マイクロチャネル304内の流体によりもたらされる圧力の抵抗を受ける。「ジッパー」効果を開始させるため必要とされる適用電圧は、弾性膜電極103とチャネル電極105の間のマイクロチャネル304の端部における間隙を小さくすることにより低減することができる。U字形又はV字形のマイクロチャネル304が、マイクロチャネル304の端部において膜電極103と小さな接触角度αを形成する(図3B参照)ことにより、この間隙を小さくすることができる。一実施例において、この接触角度は45°未満である。他の実施例において、この接触角度は30°未満である。
上述の静電封止デバイス310は、ON状態又はOFF状態のいずれかしか持たない遮断弁、あるいは部分的なON状態を付加的に持つ調節弁として利用することができる。弾性膜電極103とチャネル電極105の間に適正な電圧を確立することにより、電極103及び105はマイクロチャネル304を部分的に又は完全に封止し、したがってマイクロチャネル304内の流体の流れを調節することができる。静電封止デバイス310において、弾性膜電極103及びチャネル電極105の、電極間に電圧が適用された際に、より高い電圧となる方が、弾性層又は他の絶縁材料の層で被覆され、マイクロチャネル304内の流体がより高い電圧が適用されている電極から接地へリーク経路が生じることを防いでいる。
図3Dは、静電封止デバイス314の一実施例を組み込んだ本発明に基づく他のマイクロ流体デバイスの断面図である。静電封止デバイス314は、2つのU字形又はV字形のマイクロチャネル320及び322に配置されているが、これらのチャネルは開放部が互いに向き合っている。これらの開放部は、両側を弾性層106で被覆されている共通する弾性膜電極103により覆われている。マイクロチャネル320及び322の各々は、弾性膜電極と対向するその長さ方向の部分がそれぞれのチャネル電極105によって被覆されている。各チャネル電極は弾性層107により被覆されている。本実施例において、弾性膜電極103は共通の電極であり、どちらのチャネル電極105に電圧が適用されたかに応じて、矢印E及びFにより示すように、マイクロチャネル320内へ、又はマイクロチャネル322内へと移動する。
一実施例において、マイクロチャネル320及び322の入口は、共通のマイクロチャネル(図示せず)へと接続されている。このような実施例において、電圧が選択的に適用されるチャネル電極105によって、マイクロ流体デバイスは、流体の流れを、マイクロチャネル320を介して、又はマイクロチャネル322を介して、共通のマイクロチャネルへと流れ込むように経路つける。いずれのチャネル電極にも電圧が適用されていない場合、流体は両方のマイクロチャネルを介して流れる。
本発明に基づく静電封止デバイスは、マイクロ流体構造のポンプとしても構成することができる。図3Eは、図3Aに示す静電封止デバイス316を線3E−3Eに沿って切断した断面を示す。本実施例において、弾性膜電極103及びチャネル電極105の少なくとも一方が電極セグメントから構成されている。図示する実施例において、両方の電極が電極セグメント群から構成されている。したがって静電封止デバイス316は、V字又はU字形のマイクロチャネル302の長さに沿って一列に配置されている複数対の電極セグメント(103A及び105Aの対、103B及び105Bの対、103C及び105Cの対、103D及び105Dの対)を有する。図3Eに示すように、電極セグメント対103A及び105Aから電極セグメント対103D及び105Dの間に順次適用される電圧により、静電封止デバイス316がポンプとして機能する。電極セグメント対103A及び105Aから電極セグメント対103D及び105Dによって順次生じるマイクロチャネル302の封止は、マイクロチャネル302内の液体を矢印により示す方向へと押しやる。ポンプ効率及びこれにより発生される圧力は、電極セグメント対に順次適用される電圧によって制御することができる。例えば、電圧が各電極セグメント対に適用される時間の間隔が長ければ、ポンプ効率は低くなる。電圧が各電極セグメント対に適用される時間の間隔がより短い場合、電圧が新たに適用される電極セグメント対により静電封止がもたらされる前に、電圧が除去された電極セグメント対によりもたらされている静電封止が完全に緩和することがないので、より高いポンプ効率が結果得られる。各電極セグメント又は電極セグメント対を個々に制御することができる回路は、当該分野において周知である。このような回路により、静電封止デバイス316の操作者はマイクロチャネル302の長さに沿って電極セグメントに順次電圧を適用することができる。異なる間隔での電圧の適用を可能とするアルゴリズムも当該分野においては周知である。
ポンプ効率は、連続する先の電極セグメント対に適用されている電圧が除去される前に、連続する次の電極セグメント対に電圧を付加的に適用することにより最大化することができる。例えば、電圧が電極セグメント対103A及び105Aから除去される前に、電極セグメント対103B及び105Bに電圧が付加的に適用される。電極セグメント対103A及び105Aへの電圧は、電極セグメント対103B及び105Bの間の静電封止が電圧により完全に確立されるのに要する時間の後に除去される。電極セグメント対103D及び105Dまで電圧が適用された後、適用シーケンスは電極セグメント対103A及び105Aへの電圧の適用から繰り返される。代替的に、103A及び105Aから103D及び105Dの順番で電極セグメント対へと漸増するように電圧を適用することも可能である。
静電封止デバイス316により提供されるポンプの代替的な実施例において、弾性膜電極及びチャネル電極の一方のみを、マイクロチャネル302の長さに沿って配置されている電極セグメントから構成することができる。例えば、全ての電極セグメント103Aから103Dに共通する1つのチャネル電極が、マイクロチャネル302の内側表面に配置されている連続した電極被覆によりもたらされる。弾性膜電極は、図3Eに示すように、電極セグメント103Aから103Dのまま構成されている。このような実施例において、電極セグメント103Aから103Dのそれぞれと、共通チャネル電極の電極セグメントと対向する部分の間に電極セグメント対が存在しているものと考えることができる。このような静電封止デバイス316の実施例は、共通チャネル電極と、各電極セグメント103Aから103Dの間に電圧を順次適用することにより、上述した例と同様の様式でポンプとして機能する。代替的には、弾性膜電極を共通電極として配列させ、チャネル電極を電極セグメントとして構成することができる。
静電封止デバイス316によってもたらされるポンプの実施例は、マイクロ流体デバイス内の流体の流れを制御するように使用することができる。
図3Cを参照して先に説明した静電封止デバイス310の実施例において、弾性膜電極103は、図3Fに示すように、マイクロチャネル304内の流体の圧力に応じて変形可能である。圧力は、矢印Dにより示すように、弾性膜電極103を外側の方向に押し出す。この結果増大した断面積がマイクロチャネル304の流れ抵抗を変化させる。ある実施例において、この静電封止デバイス310の特性は望ましいものである。他の実施例において、この特性が望ましくない場合もある。
図3Gは、静電封止デバイス310の他の実施例を示し、この実施例では、弾性膜電極103の外側への移動が弾性膜電極103上に配置されている剛直な層111により制約されている。しかしながら、この剛直な層111は弾性膜電極103に取り付けられているのではなく、したがって弾性膜電極とチャネル電極105の間に電圧が適用されると、弾性膜電極103のマイクロチャネル304内部へ向かう移動は制約されない。
本発明に基づくマイクロ流体デバイス及び静電封止デバイスには、他の多くの構成が可能である。用途に応じて、静電封止デバイスをバルブ、ポンプ、流量調節器、又はこれらを組み合わせたものとして利用することができる。本発明に開示するマイクロ流体構造200、300、400、500及び600は、様々な用途において利用することができる。その例として、細胞−膜間、細胞−細胞間、細胞−基質/受容体間、抗体−抗原間、ホルモン−受容体間、小分子−タンパク質間、ポリヌクレオチド−ポリヌクレオチド間及びタンパク質−ポリヌクレオチド間の結合事象のような結合事象の検出、異性化、酸化及び還元のような化学修飾の検出、酵素修飾のような生化学反応(例えばプロテアーゼ、フォスフォターゼ、リパーゼ、エンドヌクレアーゼ、エクソヌクレアーゼ及び/又はトランスフェラーゼによる切断)の検出を挙げることができるが、これらに限定されない。したがって、本発明に開示するマイクロ流体構造は、溶液中の化合物の収集による酵素抑制の判定、酵素の基質の判定(取り出し/選択性)、固定生体分子の結合先(化学物質と同様、ペプチド、タンパク質、核酸、抗体、酵素、糖タンパク、プロテオグリカン及び他の生体物質のような)の識別、タンパク質−タンパク質、タンパク質−小分子又はタンパク質−受容体の結合の阻害物質の識別、酵素の集合(1つ又はそれ以上のウェルの)の活動の判定、及び酵素抑制剤又は他の生物活性分子の選択指標の生成を含む様々な検定において利用することが可能であるが、これらに限定されない。
好適な実施例及びそれらの利点を詳細に説明してきたが、特許請求の範囲の記載及びこれに相当するものにより画定されるデバイス及び方法の範囲から逸脱することなく、様々な変更、代替及び改変を加えることが可能である。

Claims (10)
- 静電封止デバイスを含むマイクロ流体構造であって、該静電封止デバイスが、
第1の電極(102)と、
前記第1の電極と対向する第2の電極(104)とを備え、
前記第1の電極と前記第2の電極の間の電圧差に応答して、前記第2の電極が、前記第1の電極に向かって移動し、前記第1の電極と封止を形成し、
前記第1の電極及び前記第2の電極の少なくとも一方が、他方の電極に対向する弾性層(106)を含むマイクロ流体構造。 - 前記第1の電極及び前記第2の電極の少なくとも一方が薄膜電極である請求項1に記載のマイクロ流体構造。
- 前記第1の電極及び前記第2の電極の少なくとも一方が、弾性を有する導電性ポリマーを含む請求項1に記載のマイクロ流体構造。
- 前記マイクロ流体構造が付加的に、
前記第1の電極を有する第1の構成要素と、
前記第2の電極を有する第2の構成要素を含み、
前記第2の電極が前記第1の電極に近接するように、前記第2の構成要素が前記第1の構成要素に対して位置合わせされ、これらの電極間に電圧が適用されと、前記封止が前記第1の電極及び前記第2の電極の間に形成され、前記封止が前記第1の構成要素及び前記第2の構成要素を分離可能に相互接続する請求項1に記載のマイクロ流体構造。 - 前記マイクロ流体構造が付加的に、
基板と、
前記基板中に画定されているマイクロチャネル(304)とを含み、
前記第1の電極が前記マイクロチャネルの長さ方向の部分を覆う弾性膜を含み、
前記第2の電極が前記第1の電極と対向して前記マイクロチャネル内に配置されている請求項1に記載のマイクロ流体構造。 - 前記弾性膜上に剛直な材料の層(111)を付加的に含む請求項5に記載のマイクロ流体構造。
- 前記電極の少なくとも一方が、前記マイクロチャネルの長さに沿って配置されている電極セグメントを含み、
前記マイクロ流体構造が、前記電極セグメントに対して別個に電圧を適用するように作動可能な回路を付加的に含む請求項5に記載のマイクロ流体構造。 - マイクロ流体構造(600)内のマイクロチャネルを介して流体をポンピングする方法であって、
請求項7に記載の前記マイクロ流体構造を設けるステップと、
前記電極セグメントと前記他方の電極の間に、前記マイクロチャネルの長さに沿って進行する順番で電圧差を確立し、それによって前記電極セグメントと前記他方の電極の間に静電封止を順番に形成し、前記流体を所望の方向へと変位させるステップとを含む方法。 - マイクロ流体構造(600)内のマイクロチャネルに静電封止を形成する方法であって、
請求項5に記載の前記マイクロ流体構造を設けるステップと、
前記第1の電極及び前記第2の電極の間に電圧差をもたらし、前記電極間に封止を形成して前記マイクロチャネルを閉塞するステップとを含む方法。 - マイクロ流体構造(200、300、400又は500)の2つの構成要素を脱着可能に接続する方法であって、
第1の電極(102)を含む第1の構成要素を設けるステップと、
第2の電極(104)を含む第2の構成要素を設けるステップと、
前記電極同士が対向するように、前記第1の構成要素を前記第2の構成要素の反対側に配置するステップと、
前記第1の電極及び前記第2の電極の間に電圧差をもたらし、前記電極間に封止を形成するステップとを含む方法。
