<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video content reproducing apparatus which enables a user to more easily search a desired scene by utilizing a chapter menu in the case of reproducing video contents. <P>SOLUTION: A menu window 302 and a preview window 303 are provided and the chapter menu is displayed on the menu window 302 (c). 本発明は、ビデオコンテンツの再生において、ユーザから再生するチャプターの選択を受け付ける技術に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
ビデオコンテンツの再生を行う代表的な装置としてＤＶＤ−Ｖｉｄｅｏディスクを再生するＤＶＤビデオ再生装置が知られている。
ＤＶＤ−Ｖｉｄｅｏ規格では、ビデオコンテンツの単位であるビデオタイトルは、ＤＶＤ−Ｖｉｄｅｏ規格においてパートオブタイトルと呼ばれる任意数のチャプター開始ポイントの定義を含むことができる。そして、ＤＶＤビデオ再生装置では、このようなチャプター開始ポイントが定義されたビデオタイトルについては、ＤＶＤ−Ｖｉｄｅｏディスクに記録された定義に従って、ユーザから任意のチャプターの選択を受け付け、受け付けたチャプターに対応するチャプター開始ポイントから再生を開始する機能を備えている（たとえば、特開２００１−０１６５３５号公報）。

以上のように、従来のＤＶＤビデオ再生装置において、ユーザがチャプターを選択するためには、まず、メインメニューを表示し、メインメニュー上でチャプターメニューを選択し、その上で所望のチャプターを選択するという手順をとる必要があった。
このために、ユーザがビデオタイトル中の所望のシーンをチャプターメニューを利用しながら探索するためには、以上の手順によるチャプターの選択とチャプター内のシーンの探索を繰り返し行う煩雑な作業を行う必要があった。
そこで、本発明は、ビデオコンテンツの再生に際し、ユーザがより容易に、所望のシーンのチャプターメニューを利用した探索を行えるようにすることを課題とする。

前記課題達成のために、本発明は、複数のチャプターを含むビデオコンテンツを表示装置に再生表示するビデオコンテンツ再生装置に、前記複数のチャプターの内からの一つのチャプターの選択をユーザから受け付けるためのチャプターメニューを前記表示装置の表示画面上に設けたメニュー表示領域に表示し、表示した前記チャプターメニューを介してユーザのチャプターの選択を受け付けるチャプター選択受付手段と、前記チャプター選択受付手段が選択を受け付けたチャプターを、前記表示画面上に前記メニュー表示領域と共に設けたチャプター再生表示領域に、前記メニュー表示領域の前記チャプターメニューの表示と並行して再生表示するチャプター再生表示手段とを備えたものである。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、本発明の実施形態をＤＶＤビデオ再生装置への適用を例にとり説明する。
図１に、本実施形態に係るＤＶＤビデオ再生装置の構成を示す。
図示するように、ＤＶＤビデオ再生装置は、ＤＶＤ−Ｖｉｄｅｏディスク１のデータにアクセスするＤＶＤドライバ２、ナビゲーションマネージャ３、プレゼンテーションエンジン４、ウインドウ制御部５、表示装置６、スピーカ等の音声出力装置７、リモートコントローラなどの入力装置８とを有する。

ナビゲーションマネージャ３は、ユーザの再生指示の投入やＤＶＤ−Ｖｉｄｅｏディスク１の装着が発生すると、図２に示すコンテンツ再生処理を行う。
図示するように、この処理では、ウインドウ制御部５に表示装置６の表示画面上にメインウインドウを開かせると共に、このメインウインドウをアクティブウインドウに設定させ、以降、ＤＶＤ−Ｖｉｄｅｏディスク１のナビゲーションデータの記述とユーザ操作に従ったビデオコンテンツの再生を行う（ステップ２０２）。
