Abstract
Description

【Technical field】
[0001]
The invention relates to a coated fiber web according to the preamble of claim 1.
[0002]
Such fibrous webs generally comprise a base web having a filler, the base web having a coating layer containing pigment on at least one side thereof.
[0003]
The invention also relates to a method according to the preamble of claim 12 for producing a coated fibrous web.
[Background Art]
[0004]
The printability of paper and paperboard, i.e. the properties of the printing surface and printing process, are improved by coating the paper with various mineral paints. The purpose of the coating is to coat the fibers and the fibers of the paper and paperboard, thereby reducing surface roughness and surface pore size. The paint usually comprises a pigment and a binder, and various additives.
[0005]
The coating properties of paper, in other words, the ability of the base paper to be coated, has become even more important as the demand for lightweight paper grades has increased. The coverage can be influenced by the properties of the coating mixture and the coating method, but the quality of the base paper is also important. Particularly when good quality is desired with small amounts of paint, good formation and smoothness, and desired air density and porosity are properties of the base paper that are the most important factors affecting coating properties. The coated fibrous web usually contains a filler. The filler improves the formation of the paper web by filling the spaces between the fibers. Also, with the help of the filler, the opacity of the web can be improved.
[0006]
Finnish Patent Specification 100729 discloses a papermaking filler comprising porous aggregates formed by precipitating particles of calcium carbonate on the surface of fine fibers. According to the patent, this new class of fillers is characterized by the precipitation of calcium carbonate on fine fibrils produced by refining cellulose fibers and / or mechanical pulp fibers. The particle size distribution of this fine fiber classification mainly corresponds to the fraction P100 of the wire screen.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
[0007]
According to said patent specification, the calcium carbonate content in the paper can be increased, thereby reducing the basis weight of the paper without changing the "other important" properties of the paper. The results of the publication are based on data measured on experimental sheets according to the respective standards of SCAN-C26: 76 and SCAN-M5: 76. However, the publication does not mention the coating properties of paper.
[Means for Solving the Problems]
[0008]
According to the present invention, very surprisingly, by filling the above-mentioned fillers in a paper or paperboard web or a corresponding fibrous web, the coating properties of the fibrous web are maintained while maintaining other important properties of the paper. It has now become evident that is significantly improved.

Furthermore, it has been found that, within the scope of the present invention, other fillers which consist at least in part of fibrils of cellulose or lignocellulose and in which particles of the light-scattering substance are precipitated on one surface of the fibrils can also be used as fillers. These particles are usually inorganic salts such as calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate and calcium oxalate precipitated in the aqueous phase.
[0010]
More specifically, the method according to the invention is mainly characterized by what is stated in the characterizing part of claim 1.
[0011]
The method according to the invention is characterized by what is stated in the characterizing part of claim 12.
【The invention's effect】
[0012]
The invention offers significant advantages. For example, it has been found that composite fillers consisting of fibrils and mineral pigments can impart better properties to base paper in terms of coatability than can be achieved with currently commercially available fillers. Surprisingly, the composite filler used in the present invention can significantly improve the formation of the fibrous web without deteriorating the holding properties, so that a very smooth coated substrate is obtained according to the present invention. Surface smoothness can also be improved. In addition, the fine fiber-based carrier fraction makes the surface of the base paper more dense, so that the coating does not penetrate too much into the network of fibers. For these reasons, even small amounts of paint can provide high quality coatings with good coverage and improve cost efficiency.
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
[0013]
In the following, the invention will be examined in more detail with the help of a detailed description and some examples.
[0014]
In the following examples, the filler used in the present invention is based on fibrils obtained from chemical pulp. As used herein, chemical pulp refers to pulp that has been treated with cooking chemicals to delignify cellulose fibers. According to a preferred embodiment, fibrils are obtained by refining pulp produced by a sulfate process or other alkaline pulping step. The present invention can be applied to the improvement of chemical mechanical pulp and fibrils obtained from mechanical pulp in addition to chemical pulp.
[0015]
Typically, the average thickness of the cellulose or lignocellulose fibrils is less than 5 μm, usually less than 1 μm. The fibrils are characterized by at least one of the following criteria:
a. Fibrils correspond to the fraction passing through a 50 mesh (preferably 100 mesh) screen; and b. The average thickness of the fibrils is from 0.01 to 10 μm (preferably at most 5 μm, especially at most 1 μm) and the average length is from 10 to 1500 μm.
[0016]
The fibril raw material, ie, fine fibers based on cellulose or other fibers, is fibrillated by tapping the raw material in a pulp refiner. If desired, a screen may be used to separate the desired fractions, but it is not necessary to screen the fines. Desirable fibril fractions include wire screen fractions P50-P400. Preferably, a refiner having a grooved blade is used.
[0017]
The particles of the light scattering material in the filler are inorganic or organic salts that can be formed from the raw materials by a precipitation reaction in an aqueous solvent. Examples of such compounds include calcium carbonate, calcium oxalate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, and mixtures thereof. Particles of the substance are deposited on the fibrils. The amount of inorganic salt compound relative to the amount of fibrils, calculated from the amount of filler, is about 0.0001-95% by weight, preferably about 0.1-90% by weight, most desirably about 60-80% by weight, and About 0.1-80% by weight of the paper, preferably about 0.5-50% by weight of the paper.
[0018]
In the following, the invention will be examined with particular reference to the product according to Finnish Patent Specification No. 100729, but the invention can also be applied to the other products mentioned above by appropriately changing the source material of the light-scattering pigment. It is clear that you can.
[0019]
Fillers are made by precipitating mineral pigments on the surface of fine fibrils prepared from cellulosic fibers and / or mechanical pulp fibers. For example, adding an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide that may contain solid calcium hydroxide and a compound that contains carbonate ions and that is at least partially soluble in water (eg, sodium carbonate or ammonium carbonate) in the aqueous slush of fibrils. Thus, calcium carbonate can be precipitated. Further, carbon dioxide gas that generates calcium carbonate in the presence of calcium hydroxide can be introduced into the aqueous phase. Aggregates of pearl thread-like calcium carbonate crystals are formed, which are bound by fibrils, i.e., fine strands, in which calcium carbonate particles precipitate on fine fibrils. Adhere to them. Fine fibrils combined with calcium carbonate form pearl thread-like strands, with calcium carbonate aggregates predominantly resembling pearl threads in the sediment. In water (slush), the ratio of effective volume of aggregate to pulp is much higher than the corresponding ratio of normal calcium carbonate used as filler. Here, "effective volume" means the volume required for the pigment.
[0020]
The diameter of the calcium carbonate particles in the agglomerates is about 0.1-5 μm, usually about 0.2-3 μm. In particular, fibrils correspond to fractions P50 (or P100) to P400 of a wire screen. In the filler, at least 80%, preferably up to 90%, of the light-scattering pigment is attached to the fibrils.
[0021]
The paper pulp is slushed in a manner known per se (typically having a solids content of about 0.1-1%) and spread on wire. The fillers described above are most preferably added to the fiber slush in the headbox of a paper or paperboard machine, usually in an amount of about 1 to 100% by weight of the fibers of the pulp. In other words, the amount of filler can be up to or greater than the amount of actual pulp. In principle, it is also possible to produce a base web, in which the fibrous material of the base web consists entirely of the fibrils of the filler, and the base web can form 1 to 100% by weight of the fibrous material of the base web. Contains filler.
[0022]
The pulp is webbed in a paper or paperboard machine to form a paper or paperboard web. The fibrous web may be dried, coated, and further processed, for example, calendered.
[0023]
The coating can be carried out as a single coating or a double coating, and furthermore the coating color can be used as a single-coat mixture or as a so-called pre-coat and surface-coat mixture. Also, triple coating is possible. In general, the coating colors according to the invention comprise from 10 to 100 parts by weight of at least one pigment or a mixture of pigments, from 0.1 to 30 parts by weight of at least one binder and from 1 to 10 parts of other additives known per se. Includes parts by weight.
[0024]
A typical composition of the precoating mixture is shown below:
Coating pigment (for example, crude calcium carbonate) 100 parts by weight Binder 1-20% by weight of pigment
Additives and auxiliaries 0.1-10% by weight of pigment
Water Addition of water to the remaining precoating mixture typically results in a solids content of 40-70%.
[0025]
The composition of a surface coat mixture or a single coat mixture according to the invention is shown below:
Coating pigment I
(For example, high purity carbonate) 10 to 90 parts by weight coating pigment II
(For example, high-purity kaolin) 10 to 90 parts by weight Total of pigments 100 parts by weight Binder 1 to 20 parts by weight Additives and auxiliaries 0.1 to 10 parts by weight Water Remainder By adding water to this kind of coating color, dry solid The fraction content is usually 50-75%.
[0026]
In the coating colors provided above according to the invention, pigments having a steep particle size distribution can be used, so that up to 35% of the pigment particles are smaller than 0.5 μm, preferably max. 15% is smaller than 0.2 μm.
[0027]
The present invention can be applied to any pigment. Examples of pigments include precipitated calcium carbonate, heavy calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, calcium oxalate, aluminum silicate, kaolin (hydrated calcium silicate), aluminum hydroxide, magnesium silicate, and talc (hydrated magnesium silicate). ), Titanium dioxide and barium sulfate, and mixtures thereof. Synthetic pigments can also be used. Among the above-mentioned pigments, the main pigments are kaolin, calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate and gypsum, usually comprising more than 50% of the dry solids in the coating mixture. Calcined kaolin, titanium dioxide, satin white, aluminum hydroxide, sodium silicon aluminate and plastic pigments are additional pigments, the amounts of which are usually less than 25% of the dry solids of the mixture. Special pigments may include kaolins and calcium carbonates of special quality, and barium sulfate and zinc oxide.
[0028]
The invention is particularly preferably applicable to calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, aluminum silicate and aluminum hydroxide, magnesium silicate, titanium dioxide and / or barium sulphate, and mixtures thereof, in which case, particularly preferably, in the precoat mixture. Is calcium carbonate or gypsum, and the main pigment in the surface coat mixture and the single coat mixture consists of a mixture of calcium carbonate or gypsum and kaolin.
[0029]
As the binder in the coating color, any known binder commonly used in paper production can be used. In addition to a single binder, a mixture of multiple binders can be used. Examples of typical binders include, for example, a butadiene-styrene type copolymer that may have a comonomer containing a carboxyl group such as acrylic acid, itaconic acid or maleic acid, and a polyvinyl having a comonomer containing a carboxyl group. A synthetic latex comprising a polymer or copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated compound such as acetate can be used. As binders, for example, water-soluble polymers, starch, CMC, hydroxyethylcellulose and polyvinyl alcohol can be used together with the substances mentioned above.
[0030]
Furthermore, in coating compositions, dispersants (eg, sodium salt of polyacrylic acid), chemicals that affect the viscosity and water retention of the mixture (eg, CMC, hydroxyethylcellulose, polyacrylates, alginates, benzoates) Conventional additives and auxiliaries such as so-called lubricants, curing agents used for improving water resistance, optical auxiliaries, defoamers, pH adjusters and preservatives can be used. Examples of lubricants include sulfonated oils, esters, amines, calcium or ammonium stearate; examples of water resistance improvers include glyoxal; optical auxiliaries Examples of the above include diaminostilbene disulfonic acid derivatives; examples of the antifoaming agent include phosphate esters, silicones, alcohols, ethers, and vegetable oils; pH adjusters Examples include sodium hydroxide, ammonia and the like; last preservatives include formaldehyde, phenol and quaternary ammonium salts.
[0031]
The coating mixture can be applied to the web of material in a manner known per se. The method according to the invention for coating paper and / or paperboard can be carried out by means of conventional coating equipment, ie blade coating, or by film coating or JET application.
[0032]
During coating, a coating layer having a basis weight of 5 to 30 g / m 2 is formed on at least one surface, preferably on both surfaces. The uncoated side can be treated, for example, with a web sizing.
[0033]
The invention makes it possible to produce coated and optionally calendered cellulose-containing material webs having excellent printing properties, good smoothness and high opacity and whiteness. Here we refer to the corresponding cellulosic materials derived from paper or paperboard or raw materials containing lignocellulose, especially those derived from wood or annual or perennial plants, as "materials containing cellulose". The material may or may not contain wood and may be made from mechanical pulp, semi-mechanical pulp (chemical mechanical pulp) or chemical pulp. Chemical or mechanical pulp may be bleached or unbleached. Said material may comprise recycled fibers, especially recycled paper or recycled paperboard. Said material may comprise recycled fibers, especially recycled paper or recycled paperboard. The basis weight of the material web is typically in the range of 35~500g / m 2, usually in the range of about 50 to 450.
[0034]
In general, the basis weight of the raw paper, 20 to 250 g / m 2, preferably 30 to 80 g / m 2. By applying a coating to this type of base paper, by the basis weight is about 50 to 70 g / m 2, having a coating / m 2 / side 10 to 20 g, calendering the paper, 70 At a basis weight of 110 g / m 2 , a product is obtained which has at least 90% whiteness and at least 90% opacity. Particularly preferred products are coated offset printing papers that combine high gloss, high opacity and bulk. The present invention is also suitable for the production of coated fine paper and may be suitable for those containing mechanical pulp.
【Example】
[0035]
The following non-limiting examples illustrate the invention. The measurement results indicating the paper properties in the examples were measured by the following standard methods:
Surface roughness: SCAN-P76: 95
Porosity: SCAN-P60
Air permeation resistance: SCAN-M8, P19
[0036]
Example 1
Manufacture of filler
Refining of chemical pulp Birch kraft pulp was purified with a Valmet JC-01 refiner to produce pulp suitable for filler production. The refining consistency was about 4%, the total energy consumption was 343 kWh / t, and the specific edge load was 0.5 J / m.
[0037]
The properties of the product are shown in Table 1.
[Table 1]
[0038]
Carbonation of pulp Carbonation was carried out in tap water according to Finnish patent specification 100729. When a water slurry was obtained, its dry matter content was 2.22% and the total amount was 248 m 3 . The final product had a CaCO 3 content of 69.7% and a specific surface area of 10.6 m 2 / kg.
[0039]
Example 2
Production of base paper The product produced in Example 1 was used as a filler in coated fine paper. The following table shows the results obtained in tests where the fine paper was manufactured on the STFI experimental unit (FEX) in Stockholm:
[Table 2]
[0040]
As is evident from the results in the table, the fine fiber-based filler according to the present invention has a surprisingly good effect on the coating properties of the paper compared to the commercially available PCC filler, and the formation and smoothness of the base paper have been improved. Can be improved. The effect increases in direct proportion to the amount of filler. In addition, the properties can be better exploited, especially in the context of lightweight paper, because the impermeability or surface density is higher with the filler (superfill) and the coating properties of the mixture are better.
[0041]
Example 3
Mill test A1. Production of filler-containing paper Base paper having a basis weight of 56 g / m 2 was produced under the conditions of a factory for coating. The slash consisted of a mixture of birch pulp (74%) and pine pulp (24%). After refining, the pine had an SR of 32-34 ° and the birch had an SR of 22-25 °. The pulp SR value in the headbox was 35-40 °.
[0042]
The paper machine wire compartment has a Valmet (Shim-former) hybrid wire and the wet compartment consists of a Valmet Shim-Press II with a triple compressor and a conventional drying section.
[0043]
In the base paper, various fillers are available, namely the products Finntalc F15SL (talc from Monde Minerals), Albacor HO (PCC from Specialty Minerals) and the composite filler described in Example 1 [hereinafter "Superfilt". (SuperFill) "]. The amount of talc used as filler is 10% and 15%, and the amount of superfill is 10%, 15% and 20%.
[0044]
Nanoparticles and cationic starch (Compozil Plus: EKA NP780 nanoparticles and EKA PL1510C-PAM, supplier: EKA Chemicals) were used as retentive drugs. The dosages for talc and PCC are as follows: 280 g / t nanoparticles, 70 g / t polymer, and with superfill: 280 g / t nanoparticles, 50 g / t polymer. The amounts of cationic starch and resin adhesive used were 8 kg / t and 5.2 g / t. Alum was administered to talc at 13 kg / t, and when PCC and Superfil were added, it was administered at 19 kg / t.
[0045]
A2. Results Coulter-oil porosity was measured from base paper samples. At low filler content, no significant differences were seen in the pore size distribution. 75% of all pores were in the range of 1.2-1.8 μm (around the maximum). When the filler content was increased to 20%, a significant difference was observed. In the case of PCC, the median pore size increased as the filler amount increased. For the superfill filler, the median was reduced, the distribution narrowed, and 75% of the values were about 0.8 μm. The same effect was seen with talc, but on a smaller scale. With Superfill as filler and a filler content of 20%, the median pore size is only 60% of the corresponding value of PCC and the width of the pore size distribution (75% of value) is only 34% of the value obtained with PCC. %Met.
[0046]
Thus, from the data provided by Superfill on paper, the paper surface is denser and has better coverage than the PCC-filled paper surface, thus facilitating coating and improving paper properties. Then we can conclude. In other words, a better, glossier and smoother surface is obtained such that the coating pigment cannot easily penetrate into the base paper.
[0047]
B1 Online-Coating One side of the base paper was coated and the other side was surface sized. For the coating, a BTG ABC single-blade coater was used. Surface sizing was performed in the same unit by transferring the film on the backing roll of the coater. The machine speed was 750m / min and the length of web reeler was 252cm. After the fourth drying group, an on-line coating was performed and the coating was dried in a drying cylinder (fifth drying group).
[0048]
Base papers with fillers containing 15% talc or superfill, respectively, were subjected to on-line coating. At the time of paper making, coating was applied only to the surface in contact with the wire (13 g / m 2 ), and the surface side was surface-sized (0.5 g / m 2 ).
[0049]
In the case of Super Fill, the workability of the online-coater was good. The coating conditions were fixed and those conditions are shown in Table 3. The composition or solids content of the coating mixture was not changed during the test.
[0050]
[Table 3]
[0051]
The properties of the coated and calendered paper were measured.
The coated, calendered paper, including the superfill, has about 5% better gloss and 0.1 pps better smoothness than the corresponding talc-filled paper. This is a very good result considering that the coater amount of the superfill paper is somewhat lower. Also, the light scattering factor and whiteness of the superfill paper were significantly better than the corresponding paper filled with talc.
[0052]
Based on these results, it can be concluded that the composite pigments can effectively reduce the penetration of the coating color into the base paper and obtain a coating with better coverage and gloss. This may be due to the fact that the pores of the paper are small, the pore size distribution is narrow, and the smoothness of the base paper is very good.
