Ioc

Background of the Invention
1. Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a communication system. In particular, it provides a new and improved method and apparatus for performing idle time handoff in a multiple access communication system. The present invention further provides an improved method of allocating transport channels in a multiple access communication system. The present invention relates to a method for reducing the number of necessary handoffs that occur when waiting for an order of communication channels in a multiple access communication system.
2. Description of the prior art
Generally, when a mobile station is in an access state with the system, the communication system prohibits handoff. The system access state refers to a state in which communication is started by a mobile station via an access channel or communication is started by a base station via a paging channel. In an exemplary embodiment, the message is transmitted according to a code division multiple access (CDMA) communication format, which uses, by way of reference, "satellite or terrestrial repeaters" incorporated into the recipient of the present invention. No. 4,901,307 entitled "Extended Spectrum Multiple Access Communication System" and U.S. Pat. No. 5,103,459 entitled "Waveform Supply Apparatus and Method for CDMA Mobile Phone System". I have. The use of an access channel for paging and call initiation is based on the TIA / EIA Intelli Standard IS-, entitled "Mobile-Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual Mode Extended Band Extended Spectrum Mobile Phone System". 95-A. One of the features of the CDMA system is that the same frequency is reused in each cell. Diversity combining combines multiple signals transmitted over different paths using a receiver that receives multiple signals carrying the same information, resulting in an improved provisional evaluation of the transferred signals. Is a way to give The receiver is designed to utilize a variety of signals carrying the same information transmitted over different transmission paths or transmitted by different transmitters, and is incorporated by reference into the present application. No. 5,109,390, entitled "Diversity Receiver for the System."
[0002]
Soft handoff is when a mobile station moves from one base station to another, and as long as the mobile station is located near the boundary, two or more mobiles near the boundary. Receive information from base stations that answer the phone. The signal transmitted by the base station is integrated into the mobile station's receiver by the diversity combining method described above. In a method and apparatus for providing soft handoff in a CDMA communication system, a plurality of base stations are in communication with a mobile station at or near a boundary, each of which is incorporated by reference into the present applicant. US Patent No. 5,101,501 entitled "Method and Apparatus for Providing Soft Handoff in a CDMA Mobile Phone System" and US Patent No. entitled "Mobile Station Performing Soft Handoff in a CDMA Mobile Phone Communication System" 5,267,261. In a hard handoff, as opposed to a soft handoff, a mobile station passed from one cell to another is down if another cell leaves the cell before being picked up by the incoming cell. Resulting in.
[0003]
The use of the same frequency and the use of soft handoff in each cell will consume a large amount of CDMA system capacity. Reusing the same frequency in neighboring cells will rather cause a rapid change in the S / N ratio in the forward link signal near the cell boundary. This is because the cell received by the mobile station is attenuated, and the strength of nearby cells increases. In general, when a mobile station receives from two cells, the received communication channel energy per extension chip for the total spectral noise density of the signal transferred by cell 1 is given by the following equation (1).
(Equation 1)
[0004]
Further, the received communication channel energy per extended chip for the total spectral noise density of the signal transferred by cell 2 is given by equation (2) below.
(Equation 2)
[0005]
Here, in equations (1) and (2),
I oc Is the overall temperature noise,
E c / I or1 , E c / I or2 Is the fraction of the communication channel output transferred by cell 1 and cell 2, respectively, or1 ^, I or2 ^ is the fraction of the communication channel output transferred from the cell 1 and cell 2 at the mobile station, respectively. I oc Is I or1 ^, I or2 It is considered smaller than ^. When cell 1 decays as compared to cell 2, I or1 ^ is I or2 ^, the ratio I or2 ^ / I or1 従 っ て is therefore larger. Thus, E C / I o1 Becomes smaller. If the mobile station does not perform soft handoff, this change in S / N ratio will cause problems. However, if the mobile station is performing soft handoff with neighboring cells, the change in S / N ratio may be due to the mobile station performing diversity combining of the forward communication channels from both cells. , Does not matter. E c / I o1 If the first pass given by c / I o1 The second pass given by is larger. Thus, the attenuation of one cell will improve the S / N ratio from other cells.
[0006]
Paging is a method of transmitting information to indicate the beginning of a mobile terminal service or to instruct a mobile station to receive new overhead information. A method of initiating a call to a base station is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,392, entitled "Apparatus and method for attenuating power consumption in mobile communications receivers," each of which is incorporated by reference. 287, and U.S. patent application Ser. 08 / 206,71. The present invention is equally applicable to the mobile station where the call was initiated and is incorporated by reference into U.S. Patent Application No. Ser. 08 / 219,867.
[0007]
In a slotted paging system, the base station monitors the paging channel for a predetermined short time interval and does not monitor the paging channel until the next predetermined time interval. In IS-95-A, this method of periodically monitoring the paging channel is called slot mode, and the mobile station monitors the paging channel every 80 ms. The monitoring interval can be set as long as the user desires. Before each pre-designed time slot in which the mobile station can page, the mobile station wakes up (becomes active) to synchronize with the base station or improve its synchronization. The mobile station then monitors the slot for pages or other messages. After this period, the mobile station becomes inactive and does not page until the next slot. Before the mobile station actually communicates the transfer information with the mobile communication system, and after the mobile station achieves timing synchronization with the communication system, the mobile station is idle. In the idle time, the mobile station receives a message, receives an incoming call, initiates a call, registers, or starts transmitting messages. In the idle time at the mobile station, IS-95-A allows the mobile station to perform idle time handoff at some time other than during the period when it is required to monitor the assigned slot. .
[0008]
However, when the mobile station originates a call or receives a page, it directs the system to an access state to send an origination message or a page reply message. In the system access state, the IS-95-A mobile station does not operate in the slot mode. This is called non-slotted operation. In particular, the mobile station continuously monitors the paging channel until receiving an instruction from the base station to a different state or receiving an instruction to exit the system access state due to occurrence of an error state. Although the preferred embodiment is described in the text of the originating action and originating message, the idea applies directly to the mobile termination call procedure and page reply message. After transmitting the original message and receiving its acknowledgment, the mobile station waits for and processes a channel assignment message to instruct channel transfer communication from the base station to the mobile station.
[0009]
Upon receiving the channel assignment message, the mobile station changes channel to the assigned communication channel, receives information from the forward communication channel, and begins transmitting on the reverse communication channel. The forward communication channel is a channel for transmitting information from the base station to the mobile station, and the reverse communication channel is a channel for transmitting information from the mobile station to the base station.
[0010]
The time between when the mobile station sends the original message and when the mobile station receives the channel assignment message depends on the availability of the individual provider of the infrastructure. It is possible at intervals of 0.5 seconds to several lines. Until the mobile station receives the channel assignment message, the mobile station is in a system access state.
[0011]
Paging channels generally do not support soft handoff. Therefore, attenuation occurs as described above. These are typical reactions due to the paging channel having a higher radiant output than the communication channel. Since one paging channel can control the generation and termination of calls for many communication channels, capacity loss due to high power is minimized. To support soft handoff on the paging channel, the system transmits the same information on the paging channel in all cells, which can significantly reduce the overall paging capacity.
[0012]
In the idle time, the mobile station is allowed to perform handoff. In general, a mobile station performs a handoff whenever the signal level received from one base station is sufficiently greater than that from another base station. The idle time handoff is generally performed before the mobile station monitors the slot. However, the mobile station may not be able to select the correct base station before the slot begins, and the mobile station must continue to monitor the existing base station. When the system is in an access state, the mobile station is not allowed to perform idle time handoff.
[0013]
However, when the mobile station is in the system access state, there may be a change in the S / N ratio and E c / I o1 Change very quickly, the message error ratio becomes too high, and the mobile station may not receive the message on the paging channel correctly. As a result, the mobile station cannot receive the channel assignment message. This leads to a failure to generate a call. IS-95-A allows a mobile station to leave the system access state when it cannot receive any paging channels within one second. Therefore, since the mobile station cannot receive the channel assignment message, the call generation fails.
[0014]
A similar problem exists when a mobile station is initially assigned a transfer channel. IS-95-A allows only one base station to be assigned to a mobile station. If the other base stations are strong or strong, the mobile station will not be able to successfully receive the forward communication channel. As a result, the call fails. The problem is that the mobile station is assigned to a communication channel with one active set member and cannot perform soft handoff.
[0015]
In IS-95-A, the following steps must be performed in order for a mobile station to perform soft handoff. First, the mobile station must ensure that the other base station's index is above a predetermined energy threshold. Second, the mobile station must send an indicator strength measurement message. Third, the infrastructure must initiate a handoff and send a handoff indication message to the mobile station. Depending on the system and its provision, this can take from a few hundred milliseconds to over a second.
[0016]
Thus, soft handoff is generally provided in IS-95-A systems, but is not performed when the mobile station is in system access. Therefore, a soft handoff needs to be performed when the mobile station is in system access state for improved reliability and other benefits.
[0017]
Summary of the present invention
In a mobile communication system in which a mobile station has a first communication device and a plurality of second communication devices capable of communicating with the first communication device, a method for performing a handoff in the mobile communication system is at least from the second communication device to the first communication device. Transmitting a handoff list of the second communication device to which the first communication device is allowed to be handed off, and transferring channel assignment messages from the plurality of second communication devices in the handoff list. ing. The channel assignment message is transferred from each of the second communication devices in the handoff list. The handoff list has base stations controlled by a single controller, which determines the second communication device to send the channel assignment message.
[0018]
The base station on the handoff list has the index signal and the energy level of the index signal measured by the first communication device. The measured energy levels are transmitted to the controller and compared by the controller to provide a base station energy level list in response to the comparison. The energy level list is transmitted to the first communication device, and handoff is performed according to the energy level list.
[0019]
The present invention further adds a variant with improved handling of paging and access channels. The present invention thus performs a handoff when the mobile station is in a system access state. As a result, the mobile station can receive a base station having a high S / N ratio, and can reduce the message error rate. Therefore, it is possible to avoid a failure in starting the call due to the inability to receive the paging channel.
[0020]
Yet another feature of the present invention is that the infrastructure can determine which base station should transmit the channel assignment to the mobile station. This is to verify that the mobile station can handoff to a different base station and be able to allocate a transfer channel to a new base station without delay.
[0021]
A further feature of the present invention is that the system determines whether a base station is included in the mobile station's active set before being assigned to a mobile station transfer channel. The active set is the set of bases that provide the strongest signal to the mobile station. This allows the system to determine if there are significant resources for a mobile station performing soft handoff before the mobile station is assigned to a transport channel. Conveniently, after being assigned to a transport channel, a mobile station near the cell boundary can immediately request a soft handoff. In addition, this can reduce call extinction due to the rapid changes in the S / N ratio described above.
[0022]
Finally, the above-described features provide special effects in priority access and channel assignment operations (PACA) that gain access to limited communication resources according to the priority of a designated user. Even when the invention is described in the context of a CDMA system, the invention is applicable to each cellular or satellite communication system.

The following detailed description will make the features, objects, and advantages of the invention most apparent when taken with reference to the drawings in which the object is consistently identified by reference numerals.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
In FIG. 1, a communication system 14 is shown. Communication system 14 includes mobile station 2 having
[0025]
In an exemplary embodiment, the mobile station 2 transitions to acquiring an indicator, operates to demodulate the indicator signal based on the acquisition parameter received in the system decision state, and obtains a CDMA indicator signal corresponding to the acquisition parameter. It works. The signal (if present) is received at antenna 4 and provided to receiver 8 through duplexer 6. The receiver 8 downconverts and amplifies the received signal, converts an analog signal into a digital signal, and passes the signal to the

Upon successfully acquiring the synchronization channel, the mobile station begins to monitor the paging channel according to a predetermined paging format. The mobile station 2 demodulates the signal based on a predetermined Walsh sequence stored for paging channel transfer. For example, when the obtained indicator signal is transferred by the base station 26a, the mobile station 2 monitors the paging channel using a predetermined wash sequence according to the timing information provided by the synchronization channel. The base station 26a intermittently transmits the overhead information on the paging channel.

Referring to FIGS. 3A to 3D, base station lists 50, 60, 70, and 80 transferred to the mobile station 2 performing idle time handoff in the communication system 9 of the present invention are shown. In IS-95-A, the

The base station controller 32 is configured to provide information between the base stations 26a-o, provides information from a centralized telephone exchange (not shown) to the base stations 26a-o, Supply internally generated messages to 26a-o. It should be noted that the invention applies equally even if some of the base stations in the
[0030]
Even if the index signal obtained by the mobile station 2 after the overhead information is received is transferred by the base station 26a, the mobile station 2 registers the base station 26a by transferring the movement identification information to the base station 26a. Is done. After completing registration with the base station 26a, the mobile station 2 enters the idle time state and monitors the assigned paging channel in the slot paging mode. If no registration is made, the mobile station 2 still enters the idle time state and monitors the assigned paging channel transferred by the base station 26a in the slot paging mode.
[0031]
In the slot paging mode, the base station 26a transfers the designated paging or signaling information to the mobile station 2 at predetermined time intervals called time slots. In a preferred embodiment, the time slot and paging channel are determined according to a hash function of the mobile information number known to the base station 26a and the mobile station 2.

In another embodiment, the original message of mobile station 2 is sent to base station 26a and waits for acknowledgment of the original message. Until mobile station 2 receives the authentication, mobile station 2 is not allowed to handoff. However, after the mobile station 2 has been authenticated, idle time handoff can be performed to any of the base stations in the

In another embodiment, the IS-95 described in U.S. Ser. No. 08 / 412,648 filed Mar. 12, 1994, entitled "Random Access Channel", incorporated by reference into the present applicant by reference. The mobile station 2 is transmitting the original message using -A. When the authentication has not been received from the base station 26a during the predetermined interruption period, the mobile station increases the power and tries to transmit the message again. After the mobile station 2 has performed a certain number of tries, if the mobile station 2 cannot be authenticated from the base station 26a and another base station, for example, the base station 26b is strong, the mobile station 2 sets the base station 26b. The above steps implement a soft handoff and include one or more active sets in a channel assignment message. Instead of communicating with one base station and then moving to soft handoff, mobile station 2 immediately transitions to the soft handoff state and immediately receives transfer communication from two or more base stations. This speeds up the process of obtaining the base station 2 and shifts to soft handoff. This improves the performance of the communication system 9 and reduces the situation where the forward communication channel S / N ratio is lowered and calls are dropped. Minimize.

The paging message transmitted to the base stations 26a-i is received by the antenna 4 of the mobile station 2. The received message is then provided through a duplexer 6 to a receiver 8, where the received signal is converted down and amplified. The down-converted message is supplied to demodulators 12a-j that demodulate the received message. In response to the information from the

[0051]
In another embodiment, mobile station 2 sends the base stations in both lists to the base station in the original message. This reduces the amount of information to be transmitted from mobile station 2. This allows the system to set up a soft handoff and have more than one active set member in the channel assignment message. The channel assignment message includes the index PN offset of the active set base station. Instead of making a first communication to one base station and then moving to a soft handoff that is not possible due to capacity or other limitations, the mobile station 2 immediately transitions to a soft handoff state and immediately It is also possible to receive communications from.
[0052]
For example, if the mobile station 2 is at a
[0053]
In practicing the method of the present invention, the mobile station 2 does not perform idle time handoff until it receives a timeout indicating that the authentication period has expired or an authentication of the transfer message. Accordingly, the mobile station 2 receives the access channel survey authentication. Rather than the identity provided by the base station controller 32, the base station 26a is permitted for the mobile station to generate an identity by sending an access channel survey. This will reduce delays and speed up the call launch process. Further, if the mobile station is in the system access state and the time after the identification has elapsed, the mobile station 2 has to start the access channel investigation transfer process again. This is the same as the mobile station 2 transferring a new original message.
[0054]
Otherwise, the mobile station 2 performs an idle time handoff to a base station in the
[0055]
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides for the coincidence that the channel assignment message is forwarded by the base station 26a but not received by the mobile station 2. Base station 26a has the original message received from mobile station 2, but the mobile station does not have the received channel assignment message acknowledging receipt of the original message from base station 26a. Even without receiving the acknowledgment message, the mobile station performs idle time handoff to the base station 26b, for example.
[0056]
The base station 26b sends the channel assignment message to the mobile station 2, but the mobile station 2 sends the original message again. In an exemplary embodiment, when an acknowledgment message is sent, the message is accompanied by an indication that it has been acknowledged. The mobile station 2 ignores the channel assignment message if the indicator does not correspond to the last sent original message. The present invention has several approaches to solving this problem. One solution is that base station 26b uses the same acknowledgment indicator in the original message received by base station 26a. This can be done by passing the acknowledgment indicator value from base station 26a to base station 26b via base station controller 32. In another embodiment, if the mobile station 2 receives the channel assignment message, the mobile station 2 stops transmitting the access survey and tunes to the channel specified by the channel assignment message.
[0057]
In the improved embodiment, the base stations to which the mobile station 2 is allowed to handoff (base stations in the base station list 60) are the same as the base station paging channel configuration. Base stations that do not support these capabilities are not included in the
[0058]
This method can also be used to support PACA. The feature of PACA is a well-known technique described in detail in "Description of TIA / EIA / IS-53-A Mobile Phone Features". When PACA is implemented, the mobile station 2 is given priority over other mobile phones in obtaining a transfer channel when the transfer channel is unavailable. In particular, the mobile station 2 sends an original message containing the PACA feature code and the dialed number. If the transfer channel is directly available, mobile station 2 is assigned to the transfer channel. If the transfer channel is not directly available and mobile station 2 is authorized to use PACA, the base station monitoring mobile station 2 places the mobile station 2 request in the PACA queue. For example, base station 26a can provide a request to a queue. Otherwise, the PACA queue can be managed by the base station controller 32. The position in the column is based on the priority of the PACA requests and the order in which they were requested. When the fall channel becomes available, the request at the top of the PACA column is assigned to the transfer channel.
[0059]
When the mobile station 2 request is in the PACA queue, the mobile station 2 can receive a periodic message informing the user of the mobile station 2 in queue. One piece of information with the PACA is what the system must know and is used by the mobile station 2 to determine whether the channel is free. Most systems require that the mobile station 2 register or resend the original message each time the mobile station 2 performs an idle handoff. Due to a sudden transfer between CDMA base stations, mobile station 2 registers or resends the original message when crossing the border between base stations. A second consideration of CDMA is that mobile station 2 enters soft handoff immediately after mobile station 2 is assigned to a transport channel. If resources are not available in a complex manner among the complex base stations supporting the cell, the assignment will not be successful.
[0060]
In the above modified original message, the mobile station 2 indicates the other base stations that should be the active set of mobile stations, the set of base stations where the mobile station is detected as a strong indicator signal. In one embodiment, the mobile station 2 sends a list of mobile stations and the base station sends both lists (LIST BOTH). This allows the system to determine if resources are free in all base stations required for a PACA call. To reduce the rate of transmission of the original message, the base stations in both lists need to be base stations that can move the mobile station without resending the original message. When this feature is required, the system is required to transmit a sequence of status information in all base stations in both lists. When the mobile station 2 moves out of the coverage of the base station in both lists, the mobile station 2 resends the original message.

The prior art of the preferred embodiment allows those skilled in the art to make and use the present invention. Various modifications of these embodiments will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and the principles of the present invention may be applied to other embodiments without inventive leap. As described above, the present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, and it goes without saying that the present invention covers a wide range consistent with the above-described principle and novel features.
