このような目的を果たすために、本発明の請求項1においては、車体(2)と、該車体に上下方向に旋回動可能に設けられた開閉体(テールゲート1)との間に、開閉駆動力発生装置(5)と、流体圧封入シリンダからなる開方向付勢手段(ガスステー4)とを設けてなり、該開方向付勢手段の付勢力のみで当該開閉体の全開位置を保持するようにしてなる車両用開閉体の開閉駆動装置を、開方向付勢手段の内圧検出手段(11)を有し、当該開閉体の全閉時に内圧検出手段の検出値が所定値を下回ったならば開閉駆動力発生装置による開扉駆動を実行しないことを特徴とするものとした。

上記構成によると、ガスステー4の回動中心とテールゲート1の回動中心との位置ずれの関係で、テールゲート1の全閉位置からある開角度Aまでの領域はガスステー4の推力が開扉補助力として寄与せず、即ち角度Aまでの領域は専らピニオン6に加わる減速機付きモータのトルクによって開扉駆動される。

ところで、ガスステー4は、そのシリンダ15内にガスを混入したオイルが所定の圧力で封入してあり、ピストンロッド16の分だけピストン17の両面に面積差があるためにシリンダ15からピストンロッド16を押し出す向きの推力が発生するものである。これによると、ピストンロッド16が伸長するに連れてピストンロッド16の分だけシリンダ15の内容積が増大するので内圧は低下する。この際のシリンダ15の容積変化は、オイルに混入したガスの圧縮性によって吸収される。即ち、シリンダ15の内圧値は、図3に示したように、ガスステー4のピストンロッドストロークが最大の時に最低となるので、この最低値がテールゲート1の自重を全開位置に保持できなくなると推測されるストローク最小時の内圧で判定値を設定する。

この内圧の判定値は、ガスステー4が正常であっても、一般に低温時には流体粘度が高くなってその推力が低下し、また傾斜路では重力の影響で開扉保持に要する力が増加するので、このような開扉保持に要する推力が最大となる条件下で規定すると良い。つまり、車両姿勢(傾斜)や周囲温度によってテールゲート1を全開位置に保持するのに要する推力が異なるので、このような条件をつけることにより、判定値の適正な設定が可能となる。

以上詳述した通り本発明によれば、開閉駆動装置に設けられる開方向付勢手段としてのガスステーの内圧を監視するのみでガスステーの推力が十分であるか否かを判別することができるので、制御回路などを複雑化せずにガスステーの推力不足に起因してテールゲートの使用性が低下することを容易に回避することができる。特に駆動力を断った後にガスステーの不調が分かる従来のものに比して、開方向駆動を実行する以前にガスステーの推力が不足気味となることを予測し得るので、駆動力を断った後にテールゲートが自重で閉扉移動してしまうことがなくなる。従って、テールゲートの自重閉扉移動時の過負荷に耐えられるように各部を構成する必要がなくなるので、各部の強度設定を過大にせずに済み、開閉駆動装置のコンパクト化を推進する上にも効果的である。
