Abstract
Description
【0001】
また、負分散NZ−DSFを用いた伝送路としては、前段にAeff拡大負分散NZ−DSF(Aeff:80μm2、分散スロープ:0.11ps/nm2/km)、後段に低分散スロープ負分散NZ−DSF(Aeff:53μm2、分散スロープ:0.08ps/nm2/km)を用いているものが提案されている。

0≦r≦a/2
【0025】
A≧S×250+40

A≧S×250+40
【0061】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical fiber suitably used for WDM transmission and an optical communication system using the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
With the development of the information society, the amount of communication information tends to increase dramatically. With the increase of such information, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has been widely introduced into the communication field.
This WDM transmission optical fiber is required to have low loss and to suppress signal light waveform deterioration due to non-linear phenomena such as four-wave mixing (FWM). It is also important that the absolute value of the chromatic dispersion of the optical fiber does not become too small in the above wavelength band.
On the other hand, in order to suppress the waveform deterioration of the signal light due to the accumulated dispersion, it is also important to set an appropriate value so that the absolute value of the chromatic dispersion of the optical fiber is not too large in the wavelength range of the signal light. .
[0003]
As one of the optical fibers intended to prevent the generation of noise due to four-wave mixing, the profile of a conventional dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) is adjusted to slightly reduce the zero-dispersion wavelength to a short wavelength or a zero. A non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF: non-zero dispersion shifted fiber) that is moved to a longer wavelength side so that the dispersion is not zero at 1550 nm is employed.
[0004]
By the way, non-linear phenomena include self phase modulation (SPM) and cross phase modulation (XPM) other than FWM, which are proportional to the optical power density in the core of an optical fiber. It has been known.
Even if the NZ-DSF controls the FWM, the signal waveform is likely to be disturbed by SPM or XPM. This is because the mode field diameter (MFD) of the NZ-DSF is relatively small, and the optical power density in the core tends to increase.
[0005]
In order to transmit light of a large number of wavelengths over a long distance through a fiber, the power of the inserted light must be increased. However, if the effective area (Aeff: effective area) is increased, the power density of the light can be reduced. In addition, it is possible to reduce waveform disturbance due to a non-linear phenomenon.
Therefore, in order to suppress the non-linear phenomenon, it is desirable that the effective core area be further increased while having a minute dispersion in the used wavelength range.
[0006]
On the other hand, as a light source for WDM transmission, a DFB laser (Distributed Feedback Laser) capable of inputting high power is often used. If the pulse output from the DFB laser is modulated at a high speed, a phenomenon occurs in which the wavelength changes transiently with the modulation of the light intensity. This phenomenon is called chirping, and it is known that this phenomenon tends to cause deterioration of transmission characteristics when an optical pulse propagates in an optical fiber having chromatic dispersion.
[0007]
Pulses output from the DFB laser tend to shift to longer wavelengths due to chirping, and this is called positive chirping.
On the other hand, the propagation speed of the pulse propagating through the negative dispersion NZ-DSF, in which the dispersion is slightly negative at 1550 nm, is faster on the longer wavelength side than on the shorter wavelength side, and the pulse tends to shift to the shorter wavelength side. That is, the pulse propagating through the negative dispersion NZ-DSF has negative chirping. Accordingly, when a pulse having a positive chirping output from the DFB laser propagates through the negative dispersion NZ-DSF, there is an effect that the spread of the pulse is suppressed by these interactions.
In order to utilize the above effects, practical use of the negative dispersion NZ-DSF has been promoted.
[0008]
The conventionally proposed negative dispersion NZ-DSF typically has a dispersion of −2 ps / km / nm, a dispersion slope of 0.07 ps / km / nm 2 , and an effective core area of 50 μm 2 at a wavelength of 1550 nm. .
Further, as a transmission line using the negative dispersion NZ-DSF, an Aeff-enlarged negative dispersion NZ-DSF (Aeff: 80 μm 2 , dispersion slope: 0.11 ps / nm 2 / km) is provided in the preceding stage, and a low dispersion slope negative dispersion is provided in the subsequent stage. A device using NZ-DSF (Aeff: 53 μm 2 , dispersion slope: 0.08 ps / nm 2 / km) has been proposed. (For example, see Non-Patent

[0010]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As the transmission capacity further expands and the transmission path becomes longer, the number of channels and the input power to the transmission path tend to increase, so not only the absolute value of the cumulative dispersion is reduced, but also the cumulative dispersion over a wide wavelength range. It has become necessary to reduce the wavelength dependence of the wavelength.
However, in the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF, the dispersion slope is large and the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion is large, so that the number of channels, that is, the transmission capacity is limited.
[0011]
On the other hand, some conventional positive dispersion NZ-DSFs realize a dispersion slope of 0.04 ps / km / nm 2 and an effective core area of 50 μm 2 at a wavelength of 1550 nm.
However, since the pulse propagating in the positive dispersion NZ-DSF has positive chirping, when the positive dispersion NZ-DSF is used as a transmission path, the positive chirping of the DFB laser is further increased. Not preferred.
Therefore, if the dispersion slope of the negative dispersion NZ-DSF can be reduced in the same manner as the positive dispersion NZ-DSF, the positive chirping of the DFB laser can be canceled, the wavelength dependence of the cumulative dispersion can be reduced, and the transmission capacity can be expanded. Become.
[0012]
The present invention has been made to solve the above problems, and an object of the present invention is to reduce the dispersion slope of the negative dispersion NZ-DSF, thereby reducing the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion, and achieving high quality and large capacity. It is an object of the present invention to provide an optical fiber suitably used for WDM transmission and an optical communication system using the same.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
As the refractive index profile of the optical fiber of the present invention, various forms can be applied. In the present embodiment, a so-called Wseg type refractive index profile as shown in FIG. Is adopted.

In the refractive index profile shown in FIG. 1A, a simulation is performed using the relative refractive index differences Δ1, Δ2, Δ3, α representing the refractive index distribution shape of the
At this time, the dispersion at a wavelength of 1550 nm is −2 ps / km / nm ± 10%, the dispersion slope is 0 to 0.05 ps / km / nm 2 , the effective core area is 40 μm 2 or more, and the bending loss at a diameter of 20 mm is 10 dB / m or less, and the refractive index profile determined so that the cable cutoff wavelength is 1550 nm or less was determined as the optimum profile of the present embodiment.
[0027]
Here, the cable cutoff wavelength is defined in ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union) G. 650 refers to the cable cutoff wavelength λcc. Other terms that are not particularly defined in this specification are described in ITU-TG. The definition and measurement method in 650 shall be followed.
[0028]
In the optical fiber satisfying the above characteristics, the dispersion slope is reduced while keeping the effective core area at the conventional level, and the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion can be reduced while suppressing the nonlinear phenomenon.
Further, by setting the dispersion to -2 ps / km / nm ± 10%, the absolute value of the dispersion is not too large while suppressing the waveform deterioration of the signal light due to the non-linear phenomenon such as FWM, so that the cumulative dispersion is also controlled. it can.
That is, it is a negative dispersion NZ-DSF suitable for WDM transmission.
[0029]
In particular, when the effective core area is A and the dispersion slope is S at a wavelength of 1550 nm, it is preferable that the following formula be satisfied.
A ≧ S × 250 + 40
To suppress the occurrence of nonlinear phenomena such as four-wave mixing, it is desirable that the effective core area is large. However, if the effective core area is too large, the dispersion slope tends to increase.
Therefore, it is necessary to keep the dispersion slope S and the effective core area A at appropriate values, and it is preferable to satisfy the above relational expression.
An optical fiber that satisfies this relationship can reduce the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion while suppressing the nonlinear phenomenon, and is an optical fiber suitable for WDM transmission.
[0030]
Further, when an optical fiber satisfying the above characteristics is used for a cable, an increase in transmission loss due to bending generated in a cable-forming step or the like is controlled, and a single mode operation in a wavelength region of 1550 nm or more is guaranteed. WDM transmission can be suitably performed in the wavelength region.
When it is desired to use the optical fiber of the present invention in a wider wavelength range, the cutoff wavelength is preferably set to 1350 nm or less.
[0031]
Further, in order to perform optical communication at a higher speed, it is preferable to suppress a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) which becomes an obstacle in addition to the dispersion at the time of high-speed transmission. Specifically, the PMD is preferably set to 0.1 ps / √km or less.
[0032]
By using the optical fiber of the present invention as a transmission line, an optical communication system capable of performing high-quality and large-capacity WDM transmission can be realized.
In an optical communication system in which a transmission path is constituted by a single NZ-DSF, and the dispersion is compensated by a dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) as necessary, dispersion management can be performed only by adjusting the length of the DCF. . In addition, since the DCF is installed in the relay base mainly in the form of a module, connection and repair are relatively easy.
Therefore, by using the optical fiber of the present invention as a transmission line, an inexpensive optical communication system having a relatively simple cable configuration is realized, and is particularly suitable for short to medium distance WDM transmission such as a submarine cable.
In addition, the effect of canceling the above-described chirping is added, and low-cost and high-quality WDM transmission is realized.
[0033]
Further, the present inventors conducted the following study in order to specify the refractive index profile of the optical fiber of the present embodiment.
First, a Wseg-type refractive index profile as shown in FIG. 1A was selected, and its details were examined. In the Wseg type refractive index profile, the dispersion slope can be reduced by optimizing the
[0034]
Further, as a result of intensive studies, it was found that the following tendencies were obtained by changing the relative refractive index differences Δ1, Δ2, Δ3 and α.
If the relative refractive index differences Δ1 and α in the
If the absolute value of the relative refractive index difference Δ2 is too large, the effective core area tends to be small. Conversely, if the absolute value is too small, the dispersion slope becomes large.
If the relative refractive index difference Δ3 is too large, the bending loss tends to increase, and if it is too small, the dispersion slope increases.
[0035]
Based on these findings, Δ1 to Δ3 were optimized, and the diameters a, b, and c were determined in accordance with the optimization to determine an optimal profile.
As a result, α indicating the refractive index distribution shape of the
Each parameter can take various values within this range, and an optimum profile having two characteristics among the obtained optimum profiles is shown below.
[0036]
[Example 1]
Table 1 shown below is an example in which the dispersion slope is about 0.04 s / nm 2 / km and the effective core area is about 50 μm 2 among the optimum profiles of the present embodiment.
[0037]
[Table 1]
[0038]
As shown in Table 1, at a wavelength of 1550 nm, the dispersion is −2 ps / km / nm ± 10%, the dispersion slope is about 0.04 ps / km / nm 2 , the effective core area (Aeff) is about 50 μm 2 , and the diameter is 20 mm. , The bending loss was 10 dB / m or less and λcc was 1550 nm or less.
In the optical fiber according to the first embodiment, the dispersion slope can be reduced to about な が ら while the effective core area is substantially equal to that of the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF.
[0039]
FIG. 2 shows the wavelength dispersion characteristics of B-1 of the first embodiment. Compared with the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF (A) (dispersion slope 0.07 ps / km / nm 2 ) shown by the broken line in the figure, the optical fiber (B-1) of Example 1 shown by the solid line shows the dispersion. It can be seen that the wavelength dependence of the wavelength was reduced.
[0040]
FIG. 4 shows a configuration example of an optical communication system using an optical fiber according to the present invention. The signal input from the
[0041]
Using this optical communication system, a comparison of the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion in the entire optical communication system due to the difference in the dispersion slope between the optical fiber of the first embodiment and the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF is shown below. .
Here, dispersion at 1550nm as DCF is 18ps / km / nm, with a positive dispersion fiber dispersion slope has the property of 0.06ps / km / nm 2, as the transmission path, (NZ-DSF × 50km) × 9 Span + DCF × 1 span was assumed.
[0042]
Here, -2ps / km / nm and the dispersion value in the 1550nm optical fiber of Example 1, a dispersion slope of 0.04ps / km / nm 2, the dispersion value at 1550nm conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF -2 ps / km / nm and the dispersion slope is 0.07 ps / km / nm 2 .
In this case, it is necessary to connect a 50 km DCF in order to compensate the dispersion of the transmission line.
[0043]
The residual dispersion slope at this time is as follows when the optical fiber of Example 1 is used.
[(0.04ps / nm 2 /k×50km)×9+0.06 ps /
When using the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF,
[(0.07ps / nm 2 /k×50km)×9+0.06 ps /
Thus, when the optical fiber of the first embodiment is used, the residual dispersion slope can be reduced to about 60% in the entire optical communication system as compared with the case where the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF is used.
[0044]
As described above, by employing the optical fiber of the first embodiment, the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion is reduced, and high-quality and large-capacity WDM transmission is realized.
[0045]
[Example 2]
Table 3 below shows that among the optimal solutions of the present embodiment obtained under the same conditions as in Example 1, the dispersion slope is 0.02 ps / km / nm 2 or less and the effective core area is about 45 μm 2. It is an example.
[0046]
[Table 2]
[0047]
As shown in Table 2, at a wavelength of 1550 nm, the dispersion was −2 ps / km / nm ± 10%, the dispersion slope was about 0.02 ps / km / nm 2 , the effective core area (Aeff) was about 45 μm 2 , and the diameter was 20 mm. , The bending loss was 10 dB / m or less and λcc was 1550 nm or less.
In the optical fiber of the second embodiment, the effective core area is reduced by about 10% as compared with the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF, but the dispersion slope can be reduced to about 1/3.
[0048]
FIG. 3 shows the wavelength dispersion characteristics of the optical fiber C-1 according to the second embodiment. Compared to the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF (A) (dispersion slope 0.07 ps / km / nm 2 ) shown by the broken line in the figure, the optical fiber (C-1) of the second embodiment shown by the solid line is It can be seen that the wavelength dependence of dispersion can be reduced.
[0049]
As in the first embodiment, using the optical communication system of FIG. 4, a comparison of the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion in the entire optical communication system due to the difference in the dispersion slope between the optical fiber of the second embodiment and the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF. The result of performing is shown below.
Here, the DCF connected as the dispersion compensation section was assumed to be a positive dispersion fiber, and the transmission path was assumed to be (NZ-DSF × 50 km) × 9 spans + DCF × 1 span.
[0050]
Here, the dispersion value of the optical fiber of Example 2 at 1550 nm is -2 ps / km / nm, the dispersion slope is 0.02 ps / km / nm 2, and the dispersion values of the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF and the positive dispersion fiber are as follows. The dispersion slope is the same as in the first embodiment.
In this case, it is necessary to connect a 50 km DCF in order to compensate the dispersion of the transmission line.
[0051]
The residual dispersion slope at this time is as follows when the optical fiber of the second embodiment is used.
[(0.02ps / nm 2 /k×50km)×9+0.06 ps /
When using the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF,
[(0.07ps / nm 2 /k×50km)×9+0.06 ps /
Thus, when the optical fiber of the second embodiment is used, the residual dispersion slope can be reduced to about 35% in the entire optical communication system as compared with the case where the conventional negative dispersion NZ-DSF is used.
[0052]
Thus, by employing the optical fiber of the second embodiment, the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion is reduced as in the first embodiment, and high-quality and large-capacity WDM transmission is realized.
[0053]
FIG. 5 shows the relationship between the effective core area and the dispersion slope of the optical fibers obtained in the first and second embodiments.
In FIG. 5, ● represents the optical fiber of Example 1 and ▲ represents the optical fiber of Example 2. The solid line indicates A = S × 250 + 40, where A is the effective core area and S is the dispersion slope.
In particular, an optical fiber distributed in the region of A ≧ S × 250 + 40 is a suitable optical fiber for WDM transmission because it can reduce the wavelength dependence of the accumulated dispersion while suppressing the nonlinear phenomenon.
[0054]
The present invention is not limited to the above embodiment.
For example, the optical fiber of the present invention may have a configuration or a refractive index profile other than those shown in the embodiments as long as the required characteristics are satisfied.
Further, the optical transmission system of the present invention may use a dispersion compensating optical fiber other than that shown in the embodiment, and may be configured without using the dispersion compensating optical fiber.
In addition, various changes can be made without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
