Abstract
Description

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a light-emitting device using an organic metal complex, their ligands, a method for producing them, and electroluminescence (EL) that emits light by injecting electric charge from an electrode, wherein an organic thin film is used as a light-emitting layer. The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescence (EL) element, and relates to a light emitting element which can be suitably used in fields such as a display element, a display, a backlight, an electrophotograph, an illumination light source, a recording light source, an exposure light source, a reading light source, a sign, a signboard, and an interior.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, as a measure for increasing the efficiency of an organic EL device, the excited triplet state, which has been hardly used due to thermal deactivation, exhibits high-efficiency light emission even at room temperature using a metal complex having d electrons. Attempts have been made to use organometallic complexes as luminescent materials. For example, a tris (2-phenylpyridine) iridium (III) complex is disclosed (see, for example,
[0003]
However, the tris (2-phenylpyridine) iridium (III) complex disclosed in the above-mentioned literature has a luminescent color limited to only green, has an extremely short lifetime, has a large decrease in efficiency in a large current region, and has a high efficiency. It is not suitable for a high-efficiency element with high brightness. An iridium (III) complex containing a diketone ligand or a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ligand in addition to an orthometalated ligand emits light in the range from blue-green to orange, but has a quantum yield of phosphorescent emission. However, the device was not sufficient, and a device with high efficiency was not obtained, and the continuous emission life of the device was extremely short due to the low stability of the complex, which was not practical.
[0004]
Various other organometallic complexes have been tried, but no organometallic complex that emits light with high efficiency especially with platinum and panadium other than iridium has been obtained.

[0352]
In the organic EL device of the present invention, such an organometallic complex may be used alone or in combination of two or more as a light emitting material in the light emitting layer.
[0353]
In this case, the organometallic complex of the present invention is preferably used as a dopant in the light-emitting layer, and a host material used in combination with the organic compound is an organic compound, and the lowest excited triplet energy of the organic compound is a platinum group metal. Those having a value larger than the lowest excited triplet energy of the complex are preferred. Such a minimum excitation triplet energy is a value obtained from a phosphorescence spectrum of an organic compound, and the difference between them is usually 0.1 to 2.0 eV, preferably 0.1 to 1.0 eV.
[0354]
The host material is not particularly limited as long as it satisfies the condition of having the lowest excited triplet energy larger than the lowest excited triplet energy of the organometallic complex of the present invention. Specifically, the oxadiazole derivative and the imidazole Derivatives, thiazole derivatives, triazole derivatives, oligophenylene derivatives, naphthalimide derivatives, aromatic amine derivatives, carbazole derivatives, phenoxazine derivatives, phenothiazine derivatives, quinoline derivatives, phenanthroline derivatives, cyclopentadiene derivatives, and the like.
[0355]
The mixing ratio of the host material and the dopant material is preferably 0.1 to 30% (mass percentage) when the sum of these is 100% (mass percentage).
[0356]
More preferably, in addition to the above-mentioned host material, it is also preferable that an organic compound different from the host material is further contained in the light-emitting layer. This organic compound also needs to have a minimum excitation triplet energy larger than that of the organometallic complex as the dopant, and the difference between these is 0.1 to 2.0 eV, more preferably 0.1 to 1 eV. preferable.
[0357]
Such an organic compound is an auxiliary material having a function of promoting injection of holes and / or electrons into the light-emitting layer, improving the balance between holes and electrons in the light-emitting layer, and increasing light emission intensity. When the material has an electron transporting property, it is preferable to use a hole transporting compound as the auxiliary material, and when the host material has a hole transporting property, it is preferable to use an electron transporting compound as the auxiliary material. Specifically, a material satisfying the conditions can be selected from the above-described host materials.
[0358]
The mixing ratio of the host material, the dopant material, and the auxiliary material in the light-emitting layer is not particularly limited, but when the total of them is 100% (mass percentage), the host material is 50 to 99% (mass percentage), and the dopant material is Is preferably 0.1 to 30% (mass percentage), and the auxiliary material is preferably 1 to 50% (mass percentage).
[0359]
Although the light emitting layer is preferably a mixed layer as described above, in the present invention, a light emitting layer containing an organometallic complex (phosphorescent light emitting layer) and a fluorescent organic compound adjacent to the light emitting layer And a light-emitting layer (fluorescent light-emitting layer) containing the same.
[0360]
With such a stacked structure, the excited singlet state and the excited triplet state generated in the light emitting layer can be extracted to the outside as fluorescent light from the fluorescent light emitting layer and phosphorescent light from the phosphorescent light emitting layer, respectively. As a result, the emission intensity can be improved. The emission wavelength can be adjusted by changing the thickness of each layer, the concentration of the dopant, and the like.
[0361]
The light-emitting layer containing an organometallic complex is preferably a layer containing the organometallic complex of the present invention as a dopant and containing a host material. As the host material, the same organic compound as described above can be used.
[0362]
It is preferable that the content of the organometallic complex in the light emitting layer containing such an organometallic complex is 0.1 to 30% (mass percentage). The light emitting layer containing such an organometallic complex may be a layer having the same configuration as the above-described mixed layer.
[0363]
The light-emitting layer laminated with the light-emitting layer containing the above-mentioned organometallic complex is a layer containing a fluorescent organic compound. Specifically, the layer containing no organic metal complex and containing at least one kind of fluorescent organic compound preferably contains a host material and a dopant material.
[0364]
As the host material, an oxadiazole derivative, an imidazole derivative, a thiazole derivative, a triazole derivative, an oligophenylene derivative, a naphthalimide derivative, an aromatic amine derivative, a carbazole derivative, a phenoxazine derivative, which are preferably used for a layer containing an organometallic complex, A phenothiazine derivative, a quinoline derivative, a phenanthroline derivative, or a cyclopentadiene derivative may be used. In addition, metal complexes such as anthracene derivatives, naphthacene derivatives, quinoxaline derivatives, and tris (8-quinolinolate) aluminum can be suitably used. . Further, two or more of the host materials may be mixed at an arbitrary ratio.
[0365]
The dopant that emits fluorescence is not particularly limited. Although a pyridine derivative or the like can be preferably used, depending on the chemical structure of the dopant such as a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound, when the triplet energy gap is narrow, a triplet exciton may be deactivated. It is necessary to combine them in consideration of the configuration.
[0366]
It is preferable that the content of the dopant material in the light emitting layer containing such a light emitting organic compound is 0.1 to 30% (mass percentage).
[0367]
The organic compound in the present invention may include a metal such as another organic metal complex in addition to a normal carbon-based compound.
[0368]
The light emitting layer containing the organometallic complex of the present invention can be formed by a coating method or an evaporation method such as a vacuum evaporation method. In the above-mentioned mixed layer type light emitting layer, the thickness per layer is preferably 0.5 to 1000 nm, more preferably 10 to 500 nm, according to the coating method. When the deposition method is used, the thickness is 1 to 500 nm. On the other hand, when the light-emitting layer is of a stacked type, the total thickness is preferably 10 to 200 nm. Depending on the formation method, a light-emitting layer containing an organometallic complex and a light-emitting layer laminated on the light-emitting layer may be used. The thickness may be selected from the above range.
[0369]
A configuration example of an organic EL element having such a light emitting layer is shown below.
[0370]
For example, as an example of an element configuration having the above-described mixed layer type light emitting layer, an anode is provided on a substrate, and a hole injection layer, a hole transport layer, and a light emitting layer containing an organometallic complex are sequentially formed on the anode. Layer), an electron transporting layer and an electron injecting layer, and further having a cathode thereon.
[0371]
Further, as an example of an element configuration having the above-described stacked type light emitting layer, a fluorescent light emitting layer is further provided between the hole transport layer and the light emitting layer.
[0372]
In the above description, the hole injection layer and the hole transport layer are provided as separate layers. However, the hole injection layer and the hole transport layer may be provided as the hole injection transport layer having the same function as the hole injection transport layer. The same applies to the electron transport layer and the electron injection layer, and the electron transport layer and the electron injection layer may be provided as an electron injection layer.
[0373]
In the present invention, the organic material for forming the organic layer other than the platinum group metal complex is partially described above, but also includes a light emitting material such as those generally used in an organic EL device, and a charge transporting material. Materials (general terms of an electron transporting material and a hole transporting material) can be used. Further, instead of the electron injection and / or transport layer and the hole injection and / or transport layer, a high-resistance electron injection and / or transport layer made of an inorganic material or a hole injection and / or transport layer may be provided. Good.
[0374]
In the present invention, the organic layer in the coating type element preferably contains a polymer compound in order to secure the function as the coating type element. In the case of a polymer, the molecular weight of such a high molecular compound is 5000 or more, usually about 5000 to 3,000,000, expressed as a weight average molecular weight Mw.
[0375]
Specifically, it is mainly used as a light-emitting material and a hole-transporting material. Polyethylenedioxythiophene / polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT / PSS), polyvinylcarbazole (PVK), metal phthalocyanine compound, polyaniline / Any one of polystyrene sulfonate (Pani / PSS), polyparaphenylenevinylene derivative (PPV derivative) of the following formula (P · 1), and polyarylfluorene derivative of the following formula (P · 2), or a mixture thereof: Can be used.

[0380]
As the charge transporting material that can be used in the present invention, various electron transporting materials and hole transporting materials can be used, and there is no particular limitation.
[0381]
Examples of the hole transporting material include a pyrazoline derivative, an arylamine derivative, a stilbene derivative, and a triphenyldiamine derivative.
[0382]
As the electron transporting material, oxadiazole derivatives, anthraquinodimethane and its derivatives, benzoquinone and its derivatives, naphthoquinone and its derivatives, anthraquinone and its derivatives, tetracyanoanthraquinodimethane and its derivatives, fluorene and its derivatives, Metal complexes such as diphenyldicyanoethylene and its derivatives, diphenoquinone derivatives, 8-hydroxyquinoline and its derivatives, phenanthroline and its derivatives, and the like can be given.
[0383]
Specifically, JP-A-63-70257, JP-A-63-175860, JP-A-2-135359, JP-A-2,135,361, JP-A-209988, JP-A-3,37992, No. 3,152,184 can be mentioned.
[0384]
In particular, as a hole transporting material, 4,4-bis (N. (3.methylphenyl) .N.phenylamino) biphenyl, and as an electron transporting material, 2. (4.biphenylyl) .5. (4.t. Butylphenyl) .1,3,4.oxadiazole, benzoquinone, anthraquinone, tris (8.quinolinolato) aluminum, phenanthroline and derivatives thereof are preferred.
[0385]
When the film is formed into a thin film by a coating method, it is desirable to heat and dry at a temperature of 30 to 200 ° C., preferably 60 to 100 ° C. under reduced pressure or an inert atmosphere in order to remove the solvent.
[0386]
In the case where the charge injection / transport layer is formed below the light emitting layer, a certain degree of heat resistance is required when a heat polymerization step is required for forming the light emitting layer. In this case, a compound having a glass transition temperature of preferably 100 ° C. or higher, more preferably 150 ° C. or higher, particularly 200 ° C. or higher is preferable. The upper limit of the glass transition temperature is not particularly limited, but is about 300 ° C.
[0387]
The thickness of the organic hole injecting and transporting layer and the thickness of the electron injecting and transporting layer are not particularly limited and vary depending on the forming method, but are preferably about 5 to 500 nm, particularly preferably 10 to 300 nm. When a hole injection layer and a transport layer are provided, the thickness of the injection layer is preferably 1 nm or more, and the thickness of the transport layer is preferably 1 nm or more. At this time, the upper limit of the thickness of the injection layer and the transport layer is generally about 500 nm for the injection layer and about 500 nm for the transport layer.
[0388]
The solvent used for forming the organic layer by coating according to the present invention is not particularly limited as long as the organic material dissolves and does not cause any trouble during coating. Specifically, those generally used such as alcohols, hydrocarbons, ketones, and ethers can be used. Among them, chloroform, methylene chloride, dichloroethane, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, xylene and the like are preferable. The polymer material can be usually dissolved in these solvents in an amount of 0.1% (mass percentage) or more, depending on the structure and molecular weight.
[0389]
When the cathode (electron injection electrode) is used in combination with an electron injection layer such as LiF or CsI as an inorganic electron injection layer, it is not necessary to have a low work function and an electron injection property. There is no particular limitation, and ordinary metals can be used. Among them, in terms of conductivity and ease of handling, one or more of Al, Ag, In, Ti, Cu, Au, Mo, W, Pt, Pd and Ni, particularly Al and Ag, are selected. Metal elements are preferred. The thickness of these cathodes may be a certain thickness or more that can provide electrons to the high-resistance inorganic electron injecting and transporting layer, and may be 50 nm or more, preferably 100 nm or more. The upper limit is not particularly limited, but usually, the thickness may be about 50 to 500 nm.
[0390]
Further, as a cathode (electron injection electrode), the following may be used as necessary. For example, metal elements such as K, Cs, Li, Na, Mg, La, Ce, Ca, Sr, Ba, Sn, Zn, and Zr, or two or three components containing them to improve stability. Alloy system, for example, Ag-Mg alloy (Ag amount 0.1-50% (atomic ratio)), Al-Li alloy (Li amount 0.01-14% (atomic ratio)), In-Mg alloy (Mg: 50 To 80% (atomic ratio)), Al.Ca alloy (Ca amount: 0.01 to 20% (atomic ratio)), and the like. The thickness of the cathode (electron injecting electrode) may be a certain thickness or more capable of sufficiently injecting electrons, and may be 0.1 nm or more, preferably 0.5 nm or more, particularly 1 nm or more. The upper limit is not particularly limited, but usually, the thickness may be about 1 to 500 nm. An auxiliary electrode (protection electrode) may be further provided on the cathode (electron injection electrode).
[0391]
The thickness of the auxiliary electrode may be a certain thickness or more, preferably 50 nm or more, more preferably 100 nm or more, particularly 100 to 500 nm, in order to secure electron injection efficiency and prevent entry of moisture, oxygen or an organic solvent. Is preferable. If the auxiliary electrode layer is too thin, the effect cannot be obtained, and the step coverage of the auxiliary electrode layer is reduced, and the connection with the terminal electrode is not sufficient. On the other hand, if the auxiliary electrode layer is too thick, the stress of the auxiliary electrode layer increases, which causes adverse effects such as an increase in the growth rate of dark spots. As the auxiliary electrode, an optimum material may be selected and used depending on the material of the electron injection electrode to be combined. For example, if importance is placed on ensuring electron injection efficiency, a low-resistance metal such as Al may be used, and if importance is placed on sealing properties, a metal compound such as TiN may be used.
[0392]
The total thickness of the cathode (electron injection electrode) and the auxiliary electrode is not particularly limited, but may be generally about 50 to 500 nm. The combination of the cathode (electron injection electrode) and the auxiliary electrode may be used synonymously with the combination of the electron injection layer and the cathode.
[0393]
The material of the anode (hole injection electrode) is preferably a material capable of efficiently injecting holes into the inorganic hole injection / transport layer or the organic hole injection / transport layer, and is preferably a substance having a work function of 4.5 eV to 5.5 eV. . Specifically, a material mainly containing any of tin-doped indium oxide (ITO), zinc-doped indium oxide (IZO), indium oxide (In2O3), tin oxide (SnO2), and zinc oxide (ZnO) is preferable. These oxides may deviate somewhat from their stoichiometric composition. The mixing ratio of SnO2 to In2O3 is preferably 1 to 20% (mass percentage), and more preferably 5 to 12% (mass percentage). The mixing ratio of ZnO to In2O3 in IZO is usually about 12 to 32% (mass percentage).
[0394]
The anode (hole injection electrode) may contain silicon oxide (SiO2) to adjust the work function. The content of silicon oxide (SiO2) is preferably about 0.5 to 10% in terms of the molar ratio of SiO2 to ITO. By containing SiO2, the work function of ITO increases.
[0395]
It is preferable that the electrode on the light extraction side has a light transmittance of 50% or more, more preferably 80% or more, particularly 90% or more for the emission wavelength band, usually 400 to 700 nm, particularly for each emitted light. If the transmittance is too low, the light emission itself from the light emitting layer is attenuated, and it becomes difficult to obtain the luminance required for the light emitting element. In that case, the thickness of the electrode is preferably in the range of 50 to 500 nm, particularly preferably 50 to 300 nm. The upper limit is not particularly limited. However, if the thickness is too large, there is a concern that the transmittance may decrease or peeling may occur. If the thickness is too small, a sufficient effect cannot be obtained, and there is a problem in film strength at the time of manufacturing. Such an electrode is often the anode.
[0396]
Furthermore, in order to prevent deterioration of the organic layer and the electrodes of the element, it is preferable to seal the element with a sealing plate or the like. The sealing plate adheres and seals the sealing plate using an adhesive resin layer in order to prevent moisture from entering. The sealing gas is preferably an inert gas such as Ar, He, or N2. Further, the moisture content of the sealing gas is preferably 100 ppm or less, more preferably 10 ppm or less, and particularly preferably 1 ppm or less. Although there is no particular lower limit for this water content, it is usually about 0.1 ppm.
[0397]
In the present invention, examples of the substrate on which the organic EL structure is formed include an amorphous substrate (eg, glass, quartz, etc.) and a crystalline substrate (eg, Si, GaAs, ZnSe, ZnS, GaP, InP, etc.), Alternatively, a substrate in which a crystalline, amorphous, or metal buffer layer is formed on these crystalline substrates can also be used. As a metal substrate, Mo, Al, Pt, Ir, Au, Pd, or the like can be used, and a glass substrate is preferably used. When the substrate is on the light extraction side, it is preferable that the substrate has the same light transmittance as the above-mentioned electrodes.
[0398]
Further, a number of the devices of the present invention may be arranged on a plane. By changing the emission color of each element arranged on a plane, a color display can be obtained.
[0399]
The emission color may be controlled by using a color filter film, a color conversion film containing a fluorescent substance, or a dielectric reflection film on the substrate.
[0400]
The organic EL device of the present invention is generally used as a DC-driven or pulse-driven EL device, but it can also be driven by AC. The applied voltage is usually about 2 to 30V.
[0401]
For example, the organic EL device of the present invention may have a configuration in which a substrate / anode / organic layer (including a light-emitting layer) / cathode is sequentially laminated as described above, or may have a reverse laminated configuration. . The lamination structure may be appropriately determined according to, for example, the specifications of the display and the manufacturing process.
[0402]
The organic EL element of the present invention can be used for various optical devices such as an optical pickup used for memory read / write, a relay device in a transmission line of optical communication, a photocoupler, and the like, in addition to a display application. Can be.
