【発明が解決しようとする課題】
ところで、立体物をより自然に表示するには、光源の存在を考慮して立体画像に陰影を付けることが効果的である。しかしながら、この陰影処理には多大な演算量及び演算時間を要するため、装置が大がかりになるばかりでなく、コスト上昇の原因となる。従って、従来、図8に示すように、光源の位置を固定し、常に決まった方向から陰影を付ける場合が多く、違和感が残ってしまう。

上記目的を達成するため、本発明による第1の表示装置は、対象物を立体的に表示させる立体物の表示装置において、上記対象物に係わる視点の位置情報を検出する手段と、上記対象物に係わる光源の位置情報を検出する手段と、上記光源と上記視点との関係に基づいて予め設定した複数の陰影画像を記憶する手段と、上記光源の位置情報と上記視点の位置情報とに基づき、上記複数の陰影画像から該当する陰影画像を選択して表示する手段とを備えたことを特徴とする。

本発明による立体物の表示装置は、表示対象とする立体物に陰影処理を施してより自然な表示を可能とするものであり、以下、車両に搭載される例について説明する。図1において、符号1は、マイクロコンピュータ等からなる中央演算処理ユニット(CPU)であり、このCPU1の入力側に、GPS(Global Positioning System)等の人工衛星を利用した航法や走行履歴に基づいて現在位置を測定する推測航法により自車両の位置を時間(日時)を含めて測位する測位装置2、陰影処理の際の光源となる太陽からの日射量を測定する日射センサ3、前照灯等の照明装置をON,OFFするライトスイッチ4等の機器が接続されると共に、CPU1の出力側に、画像を表示するためのモニタ5が接続されている。
