【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、複写機やファクシミリ、プリンタなどの画像形成装置に関し、より具体的には電磁誘導を用いた定着装置に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
プリンタ・複写機・ファクシミリなどの画像形成装置に対し、近年、省エネルギー化・高速化についての市場要求が強くなってきている。これらの要求性能を達成するためには、画像形成装置に用いられる定着装置の熱効率の改善が重要である。

画像形成装置では、電子写真記録・静電記録・磁気記録等の画像形成プロセスにより、画像転写方式もしくは直接方式により未定着トナー画像がシート材・印刷紙・感光紙・静電記録紙などの記録媒体に形成される。未定着トナー画像を定着させるための定着装置としては、熱ローラ方式、フィルム加熱方式、電磁誘導加熱方式等の接触加熱方式の定着装置が広く採用されている。

電磁誘導加熱方式の定着装置として、特開平8−22206号公報では、励磁コイルからなる誘導加熱手段の磁界により磁性金属部材である発熱部材に発生した渦電流でジュール熱を生じさせ、発熱部材を電磁誘導発熱させる技術が提案されている。

以下に従来の電磁誘導加熱方式の定着装置の構成について説明する。ここで、図11は従来の電磁誘導加熱方式による定着装置を示す模式図である。

図11に示すように、定着装置は、フェライトコア1001aと励磁コイル1001bとからなる励磁コイルユニット1001と、磁性金属部材からなる加熱ローラ1002と、表層に弾性体層を有する定着ローラ1003と、加熱ローラ1002と定着ローラ1003とで張設され表層に離型層を有する定着ベルト1004と、定着ローラ1003と対向して押圧する加圧ローラ1005とで構成され、定着ローラ1003と加圧ローラ1005の間にニップ部を形成する。加熱ローラ1002、定着ローラ1003、定着ベルト1004、加圧ローラ1005は駆動手段(図示せず)により駆動され、それぞれ矢印Dの方向へ回転、移動する。

温度検知手段1006が検出する温度情報をもとに定着ベルト1004が所定の温度を保つようにソフトウェアにより演算された結果に基づき、励磁コイル1001bはインバータ回路(図示せず)により通電され、交番磁界(図示せず)を発生させる。励磁コイル1001bにより発生する交番磁界は、加熱ローラ1002に渦電流を発生させ、この渦電流が加熱ローラ1002の電気抵抗によって熱(ジュール熱)に変換され加熱ローラ1002を発熱させ、定着ベルト1004が加熱される。

定着ベルト1004が所定の温度に立ち上がった状態において、定着ローラ1003と加圧ローラ1005とで形成されるニップ部に、画像形成部(図示せず)で形成された未定着トナー画像1008を有した記録材1007を導入すると、記録材1007は定着ベルト1004と加圧ローラ1005とに挟まれて定着ニップ部に搬送されることにより、記録材1007上の未定着トナー像1008が記録材1007上に溶融定着される。

また、加熱ローラ1002、定着ローラ1003、定着ベルト1005、加圧ローラ1005、温度検知手段1006は一つユニットの定着器1009として構成され、寿命がきた場合はユーザーにて交換が可能である。

以上のように構成された定着装置では発熱効率も向上し、さらなるウォームアップの短縮が可能である。なお、定着ニップ部の出口においては、通過した記録材1007は定着ベルト1004の表面から分離されて排紙トレイ(図示せず)に搬送される。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
このような電磁誘導加熱方式の定着装置において、加熱部は発熱効率が良い反面、温度上昇が非常に速いため、何らかの異常で定着ベルト1004が回転、移動しない状態で加熱されると加熱部近傍が局所的に加熱され、発煙や発火するという安全上の問題があった。

また、加熱ローラの発熱量はソフトウェアの演算結果に基づいているため、ソフトウェア暴走時においても発煙や発火するという安全上の問題があった。

また、ユーザーが定着器1009の交換を電源OFFせずに行なった場合や、誤って定着器を装着し忘れて印字加熱した場合、不要な電磁波がユーザーや周りの機器に漏洩するという問題があった。

そこで、本発明は、発熱部材を駆動する駆動手段が正常に動作していることを検知する駆動動作検知手段と発熱部材が正常に回転、移動していることを検知する発熱部材回転移動検知手段を設け、どちらかの検知結果が異常の場合はインバータ回路の出力を停止または制限することのできる安全な定着装置を提供することを目的とする。

この課題を解決するために、本発明の発熱装置及び定着装置は、発熱部材と、前記発熱部材と対向配置され、電磁誘導によって前記発熱部材を発熱させる誘導加熱手段と、前記発熱部材を回転または移動させる駆動手段と、前記駆動手段が正常に動作していることを検知する駆動動作検知手段と、前記発熱部材が正常に回転または移動することを検知する発熱部材回転移動検知手段と、前記誘導加熱手段を駆動するインバータ回路と、前記インバータ回路を制御する制御回路とを有し、前記駆動動作検知手段または前記発熱部材回転移動検知手段が異常と検知した場合に、前記制御回路は前記インバータ回路の出力を停止または制限させることができる構成のものである。

まず、本発明に係る画像形成装置の概略を説明する。なお、本実施の形態で説明する画像形成装置は、電子写真方式を採用する装置の中で特にカラー画像の発色に寄与する4色の基本色トナー毎に現像装置を備え、転写体に4色画像を重ね合わせ、シート材に一括転写するタンデム方式である。しかしながら、本発明はタンデム方式の画像形成装置のみに限定されず、また現像装置の数、中間転写体の有無等に拘らず、あらゆる方式の画像形成装置に採用可能であることはいうまでもない。

図2に示すように、定着装置は、誘導加熱手段180の電磁誘導により加熱される加熱ローラ(発熱部材)130と、加熱ローラ130と平行に配置された定着ローラ140と、加熱ローラ130と定着ローラ140とに張り渡され、加熱ローラ130により加熱されるとともに少なくともこれらのいずれかのローラの回転により矢印B方向に回転する無端帯状の耐熱性ベルト(トナー加熱媒体)150と、耐熱性ベルト150を介して定着ローラ140に圧接されるとともに耐熱性ベルト150に対して順方向に回転する加圧ローラ160とから構成されている。

加熱ローラ130はたとえば鉄、コバルト、ニッケルまたはこれら金属の合金等の中空円筒状の磁性金属部材の回転体からなり、外径をたとえば20mm、肉厚をたとえば0.3mmとして、低熱容量で昇温の速い構成となっている。

加熱ローラ130は、図3に示すように、亜鉛メッキ鋼板からなる支持側板131に固定されたベアリング132により、その両端が回転可能に支持されている。加熱ローラ130は、図5に示す駆動手段によって回転駆動される。加熱ローラ130は、鉄・ニッケル・クロムの合金である磁性材料によって構成され、そのキュリー点が300℃以上となるように調整されている。また、加熱ローラ130は、厚さ0.3mmのパイプ状に形成されている。

加熱ローラ130の表面には、離型性を付与するために、厚さ20μmのフッ素樹脂からなる離型層(図示せず)が被覆されている。尚、離型層としては、PTFE、PFA、FEP、シリコーンゴム、フッ素ゴム等の離型性の良好な樹脂やゴムを単独であるいは混合して用いてもよい。加熱ローラ130をモノクロ画像の定着用として用いる場合には離型性のみを確保すればよいが、加熱ローラ130をカラー画像の定着用として用いる場合には弾性を付与することが望ましく、その場合にはさらに厚いゴム層を形成する必要がある。

定着ローラ140は、たとえばステンレススチール等の金属製の芯金140aと、耐熱性を有するシリコーンゴムをソリッド状または発泡状にして芯金140aを被覆した弾性部材140bとからなる。そして、加圧ローラ160からの押圧力でこの加圧ローラ160と定着ローラ140との間に所定幅の定着ニップ部Nを形成するために外径を30mm程度として加熱ローラ130より大きくしている。弾性部材140bはその肉厚を3〜8mm程度、硬度を15〜50°(Asker硬度:JIS A の硬度では6〜25°による)程度としている。この構成により、加熱ローラ130の熱容量は定着ローラ140の熱容量より小さくなるので、加熱ローラ130が急速に加熱されてウォームアップ時間が短縮される。

加熱ローラ130と定着ローラ140とに張り渡された耐熱性ベルト150は、誘導加熱手段180により加熱される加熱ローラ130との接触部位で加熱される。そして、加熱ローラ130,定着ローラ140の回転によって耐熱性ベルト150の内面が連続的に加熱され、結果としてベルト全体に渡って加熱される。

耐熱性ベルト150は、鉄、コバルト、ニッケル等の磁性を有する金属またはそれらを基材とする合金を基材とした発熱層と、その表面を被覆するようにして設けられたシリコーンゴム、フッ素ゴム等の弾性部材からなる離型層とから構成された複合層ベルトである(図示せず)。

上記複合層ベルトを使用すれば、ベルトを直接加熱できる他、発熱効率が良くなり、またレスポンスが速くなる。

また、仮に何らかの原因で、例えば耐熱性ベルト150と加熱ローラ130との間に異物が混入してギャップが生じたとしても、耐熱性ベルト150の発熱層の電磁誘導による発熱で耐熱性ベルト150自体が発熱するので、温度ムラが少なく定着の信頼性が高くなる。

図2において、加圧ローラ160は、たとえば銅またはアルミ等の熱伝導性の高い金属製の円筒部材からなる芯金160aと、この芯金160aの表面に設けられた耐熱性およびトナー離型性の高い弾性部材160bとから構成されている。芯金160aには上記金属以外にSUSを使用しても良い。

加圧ローラ160は耐熱性ベルト150を介して定着ローラ140を押圧してシート材90を挟持搬送する定着ニップ部Nを形成しているが、本実施の形態では、加圧ローラ160の硬度を定着ローラ140に比べて硬くすることによって、加圧ローラ160が定着ローラ140(及び耐熱性ベルト150)へ食い込む形となり、この食い込みにより、シート材90は加圧ローラ160表面の円周形状に沿うため、シート材90が耐熱性ベルト150表面から離れやすくなる効果を持たせている。この加圧ローラ160の外径は定着ローラ140と同じ30mm程度であるが、肉圧は2〜5mm程度で定着ローラ140より薄く、また硬度は20〜60°(Asker硬度:JIS A の硬度では6〜25°による)程度で前述したとおり定着ローラ140より硬く構成されている。定着ニップ部Nの入口側近傍において耐熱性ベルト150の内面側に当接して配置されたサーミスタなどの熱応答性の高い感温素子からなる温度検出手段240により、ベルト内面温度が検知される。

電磁誘導により加熱ローラ130を加熱する誘導加熱手段180は、図2に示すように、加熱ローラ130の外周面と対向配置されている。誘導加熱手段180には、加熱ローラ130を覆うように湾曲形成されて加熱ローラ130を格納するための格納室200を備えた支持フレーム(コイルガイド部材)190が設けられている。なお、支持フレーム190は難燃性の樹脂で構成されている。
