本発明は、中空クラブヘッドを備えたゴルフクラブに関するものである。

【従来の技術】
この種のゴルフクラブは、クラブヘッドの質量がその外殻部分に集中するため、総質量が同じであれば中実タイプのクラブヘッドより質量中心回りの慣性モーメントは大きくなり、その結果としてスイートエリアは拡大する。

また、クラブヘッドを大型化しても質量の増加が抑えられるので、軽くて振り抜き易いクラブとすることができる、大型化することでボールに当たらないと云う不安感から開放される、などの点も好感されて、近年急速に普及してきた(一般にはメタルウッドクラブと称されている。)。

そして、中空クラブヘッドを備えたゴルフクラブにおいては、例えば図2に示したようにクラブヘッド1の表面全体にクロムめっき2を施して慣性モーメントをさらに増大させ、大きなランが出るように構成したゴルフクラブ100Xが提案されている(非特許文献1)。なお、図中3はフェース、4はクラウン、5はソール、6はホーゼル、7はシャフトである。

飛距離と方向性を向上させるために、クラブヘッド1はさらに大型化する傾向にある。そして、クラブヘッド1を大型化してもヘッド質量が増加しないように、また、高反発化を図るためにも、ヘッド外殻体は薄肉化する傾向にある。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、本発明の実施形態を図1に基づいて詳細に説明する。なお、理解を容易にするため、図1においても前記図2において説明した部分と同様の機能を有する部分には、同一の符号を付した。

クラブヘッド1を4分割鋳造法(フェース3、クラウン4、ソール5、ホーゼル6に分けて鋳造)により作製した。フェース3は肉厚2.6mmのβチタン合金(Ti−15V−3クロム−3錫−3Al)を450℃で所定の形状に成型し、その成型した裏面全体に厚さ1μmの金めっきを施した。そして、裏面の外周から5mmより内側をマスキングしてサンドブラスト処理を行い、マスキングされていない部分、すなわち外周から5mmの範囲の金めっきは剥離し、外周から5mmより内側にだけ金めっき2Aを残存させた。

クラウン4とソール5を純チタンにより成型した。ホーゼル6は純チタンの丸棒から削り出した。上記4部品をTIG溶接により接合した後、研磨と塗装を行ってクラブヘッド1とした。このクラブヘッド1をFRP製の長さ44インチ(約112cm)のシャフト7の先端部に装着したゴルフクラブ100を、以下発明クラブAと云う。なお、クラブヘッド1の体積は380cm3とした。

比較クラブとして、クラブヘッド1のフェース3に金めっき2Aが施されていないクラブ1体(比較クラブAと云う)と、フェース3の表面に厚さ1μmの金めっき2Aが施されたクラブ1体(比較クラブBと云う)も、発明クラブAと同様の前記手法により作製した。

そして、試打ロボットによる耐久性試験を行った。クラブヘッド1の設定スピードは40m/秒とした。試験結果を示す表1から明らかなように、発明クラブAはゴルフボールを9000回打ってもフェース3に割れなどの異常は確認されなかったが、フェース3に金めっき2Aが施されていない比較クラブAと、フェース3の表面に金めっき2Aが施された比較クラブBは、共に5000回打球した時点で行った検査においてフェース3に割れが確認され、何れも耐久性に問題があることが判明した。

飛距離試験を行うために、前記と同様の手法によりクラブヘッド1を2体追加作製した。フェース3は肉厚2.2mmのβチタンにより作製した。1体のフェース3の裏面には厚さが1μmの金めっき2Aを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブBと云う)、1体のフェース3には金めっき2Aを施さなかった(このヘッドを備えたクラブを比較クラブCと云う)。また、前記の耐久性試験で破損した比較クラブAとBは作製し直し、発明クラブAと合せて飛距離試験を行った。

試打ロボットにより各クラブとも10回の試打を行い、ランを含むボールの総飛距離を測定した。クラブヘッド1の設定スピードはこの場合も40m/秒とした。試験結果を示す表1から明らかなように、発明クラブA、Bはクラブヘッド1のフェース3に金めっき2Aが施されていない比較クラブAより飛距離が出ることが確認された。なお、フェース3に金めっき2Aが施されていない比較クラブCでは、ゴルフボールを3回打った時点でフェース3に割れが発生し、その後の飛距離試験はできなかった。

発明クラブBについては、前記と同様に試打ロボットによる耐久性試験を行ったが、9000回ボールを打ってもフェース3に割れなどの異常は発生しなかった。したがって、高反発化させるためにクラブヘッド1のフェース3を2.2mmと薄肉化しても、その裏面に所定の厚さの金めっき2Aが施されていれば、フェース3の耐久性は十分あることが確認された。

前記と同様の手法によりクラブヘッド1を7体作製した。フェース3は肉厚2.4mmのβチタンにより作製した。1体のフェース3には金めっき2Aを施さず(このヘッドを備えたクラブを比較クラブDと云う)、1体のフェース3裏面には厚さ0.01μmの金めっき2Aを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブCと云う)、1体のフェース3裏面には厚さ0.05μmの金めっき2Aを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブDと云う)、1体のフェース3裏面には厚さ1μmの金めっき2Aを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブEと云う)、1体のフェース3裏面には厚さ10μmの金めっき2Aを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブFと云う)、1体のフェース3裏面には厚さ100μmの金めっき2Aを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブGと云う)、1体のフェース3裏面には厚さ150μmの金めっき2Aを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブHと云う)。

発明クラブC〜Hと比較クラブDのゴルファーによる実打飛距離試験を行った。この場合も、各クラブで10回の試打を行い、ランを含むボールの総飛距離を測定した。その後、前記と同様に試打ロボットによる耐久性試験を行った。

試験結果を示す表1から分かるように、クラブヘッド1のフェース3の裏面に金めっき2Aが施されていると耐久性は改善されるが、その厚さが0.01μmでは耐久性を高める作用効果は甚大ではない。

また、金めっき2Aの厚さが150μmと厚い場合には、ボールの飛距離は落ちる。これは、フェース3の剛性が大きくなり過ぎると、打球時のフェース3の撓みが小さくなるので、その撓みが復元する際の反発力も減少し、ボールの飛距離が落ちたものと思われる。

したがって、クラブヘッド1のフェース3裏面に施す金めっき2Aは、耐久性の観点からは0.05μmよりは厚いことが好ましい。また、ボールの飛距離の観点からは150μm未満に抑えることが好ましい。

前記と同様の手法によりクラブヘッド1を、さらに2体追加作製した。フェース3は肉厚2.2mmのβチタンにより作製した。1体のフェース3の裏面には厚さが1μmの銀めっき2Bを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブI云う)、1体のフェース3の裏面には厚さが1μmの50%金−50%銀めっき2Cを施し(このヘッドを備えたクラブを発明クラブJと云う)、ゴルファーによる実打飛距離試験を行った。この場合も、各クラブで10回の試打を行い、ランを含むボールの総飛距離を測定した。その後、前記と同様に試打ロボットによる耐久性試験を行った。

試験結果を示す表1から分かるように、クラブヘッド1のフェース3の裏面に銀2Bが施されても、50%金−50%銀めっき2Cが施されても、そのめっき厚が0.05〜100μmの範囲にあると、耐久性とボールの総飛距離の改善が図られる。

なお、本発明は上記実施形態に限定されるものではないので、特許請求の範囲に記載の趣旨から逸脱しない範囲で各種の変形実施が可能である。

例えば、クラブヘッド1のフェース3裏面には金、銀、金と銀の合金の他にも、プラチナ、ロジウム、パラジウム、ニッケル、クロム、銅、錫、亜鉛、コバルトの何れかが単独でめっきされても、それらを含む合金の形態でめっきされても、それらが0.05〜100μmの厚さにめっきされていれば、そのような構成のクラブヘッド1を備えたゴルフクラブ100は、前記した発明クラブA〜Jと同様に、大きな飛距離と優れた耐久性が実現できる。

以上説明したように、本発明のゴルフクラブにおいてはクラブヘッドのフェース裏面にフェース本体部と異なる金属、例えば金、銀、プラチナ、ロジウム、パラジウム、ニッケル、クロム、銅、錫、亜鉛、コバルトをめっきして金属疲労が起こり難く、すなわち耐久性が改善されているので、クラブヘッドを大型化してスイートエリアを広げるときにも、薄肉化による軽量化と高反発化の両方が同時に達成できる。
