Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an LED array exposure apparatus used for writing at the time of image formation and an image forming apparatus including the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Image forming apparatuses such as copiers, printers, and facsimile machines have a direct image forming method in which an image is formed directly on paper as a recording medium, and an image is temporarily recorded on an intermediate medium such as a photoreceptor and the image is recorded. There is an indirect image forming method in which the image is transferred to a final recording medium. Except for small-scale use in homes and the like, an indirect image forming type image forming apparatus that can use plain paper as a recording medium is widely used.
[0003]
Conventionally, in image forming apparatuses such as copying machines, analog image information has been recorded and formed using an analog image forming process, but with the recent digitization of information, digital image information has been converted into digital information using a digital image forming process. Processing is generally performed to form an image composed of minute dots on a recording medium. In such an image forming apparatus, an electrostatic latent image is formed by exposing digital image information formed of a group of minute dots to a charged photosensitive member as minute dots. Thereafter, the image is visualized by using a powdery toner in a developing device, and is transferred to a recording medium sheet to form an image.
[0004]
As a device for exposing a digital image information to a photoreceptor, there are a number of laser exposure devices that perform exposure using laser light emitted from a laser diode or the like, and many small LEDs (light emitting diodes) corresponding to one dot of a digital image. There is an LED array exposure apparatus that performs exposure by arranging the photoconductors in an array by arranging the photoconductors in an axial direction (main scanning direction). In particular, recently, LED array exposure apparatuses have been widely used in printers and other image forming apparatuses because of their small size, low cost, easy control, high reliability without mechanical moving parts, and the like.
[0005]
Such an LED array exposure apparatus includes a printed circuit board, an LED array chip mounted thereon, a drive IC for supplying a current thereto to drive the LED, and a light-emitting surface of the LED array chip and a photoconductor. There is provided a lens array, which is an aggregate of a plurality of lenses that converge light from an LED light emitting element as a beam on a photosensitive member to form an image, and a holding member that holds these components.
[0006]
One or more LED array chips are arranged on the substrate so as to expose at least an effective scanning width equal to or greater than the width of the recording medium (paper), and form an electrostatic latent image on a charged photoconductor. Exposure source. On this LED array chip, minute LED light emitting elements corresponding to respective pixels of video data (image data to be recorded) are arranged in a line. For example, when a resolution of 600 dpi corresponds to a recording width of A4 size, the total number of LED light emitting elements included in one or a plurality of LED array chips is at least 5120.
[0007]
The drive IC has a circuit for driving each LED light emitting element to emit light, and one or a plurality of the drive ICs are mounted on the substrate (or outside). The lens array is formed by arranging a plurality of cylindrical lenses in a bundle, and converges the light of the LED light emitting element on the photoreceptor and exposes the light as beam-shaped dots.
[0008]
However, there is a variation in the light emission intensity of each LED light emitting element, and the variation appears as a density unevenness or a streak in a visualized image on a recording medium, causing deterioration in recording quality. For this reason, in the conventional LED array exposure apparatus, light amount correction data for correcting the exposure energy of each LED light emitting element to be constant is prepared for each LED light emitting element in advance, and according to this light amount correction data, The variation in exposure energy when the LED light emitting element emits light has been corrected.
[0009]
Also, if the resolution varies due to an uneven arrangement of the lens array, or if the focus position of the light from the LED light emitting element shifts due to an error in mounting the lens array, the dots formed on the photoreceptor are distorted, The resolution varies. Even if the variation of the light emission intensity of each LED light emitting element is corrected to be within about ± 2%, if the resolution due to the lens array is varied due to the above-described cause, the density unevenness appears remarkably in the visualized image.
[0010]
Further, in a developing process for developing and visualizing a latent image, it has been confirmed that density unevenness tends to be remarkable depending on the degree of a developing bias (voltage) applied to a developing roller. Since the developing bias acts as a so-called threshold value when the electrostatic latent image on the photosensitive member attracts the charged toner, the threshold value increases with a large developing bias, and the threshold value increases with respect to a high-density pixel. In the developing bias, the threshold value becomes low, and the variation in the light amount and the beam area due to the LED light emitting element becomes remarkable for each of the low density pixels, and the pixels are easily recognized as uneven density and streaks. Particularly, in a tandem type color image forming apparatus that simultaneously forms images of different colors using a plurality of image forming units, the applied developing bias may be different because the characteristics of the toner and the developing device are different for each color. is there. Further, even in a black-and-white image forming apparatus having a single image forming unit, the developing bias may be adjusted individually due to the variation of members and the variation between apparatuses. The effect on streaking cannot be ignored.
[0011]
Even in the case of an LED light-emitting element whose light amount has been corrected by the conventional technology, the exposure energy curve of the exposure dot on the photoconductor is different, so that there is a problem that the area of the developed dot is different when developed by applying a developing bias voltage. On the other hand, according to

[0014]
The present invention has been made in view of such a situation, and in an LED array exposure apparatus that performs exposure in accordance with pixel data in which the density of one pixel is expressed by a plurality of gradations, the variation in light amount and beam area, LED array exposure apparatus capable of forming an image in which the density is changed linearly by correcting the influence of bias on the pixel density gradation, greatly reducing density unevenness and streaks, and an image forming apparatus having the same The purpose is to provide.
[0015]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, according to the present invention, light is emitted when a current flows based on drive data obtained by correcting a light amount of a predetermined current according to a variation in the light amount, and the density of one pixel is expressed by a plurality of gradations. One or a plurality of LED array chips having a plurality of LED light emitting elements whose lighting is controlled so as to be exposed according to the pixel data are arranged in a line, and the light emission is imaged through a lens array. In the LED array exposure apparatus, the light amount correction takes into account the beam area correction for the variation in the beam area of each LED light emitting element transmitted through the lens array and the effect of the development bias at the time of low density gradation of the pixel data. A low-density gradation correction value to adjust the beam area for the variation in the beam area of each LED light-emitting element transmitted through the lens array; In consideration of the influence of the degree of the developing bias at the time of the gradation, the light amount correction is taken into consideration as a high density gradation correction value, and the correction value corresponding to the density gradation of the pixel data is corrected by the low density gradation correction. A value is obtained by linearly interpolating the value and the high-density gradation correction value, and is used as the drive data.
[0016]
Further, in the present invention, the beam area correction averages the beam areas of a plurality of LED light emitting elements before and after including the LED light emitting element to be corrected, and calculates the average value and the beam area of the LED light emitting element to be corrected. Is performed in accordance with the magnitude of the difference between.
[0017]
Further, in the present invention, the plurality of front and rear LED light emitting elements to be a moving average value move together with the LED light emitting element to be corrected so that the average value of the beam area becomes a moving average value. I do.
[0018]
The plurality of LED light-emitting elements before and after are a plurality of subsequent LED light-emitting elements starting with the LED light-emitting element to be corrected.
[0019]
Alternatively, the front and rear LED light emitting elements are LED light emitting elements in the same LED array chip including the LED light emitting element to be corrected.
[0020]
Further, according to the present invention, an image forming apparatus is configured using the above-described LED array exposure apparatus.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. First, a schematic configuration of an image forming apparatus using the LED array exposure apparatus according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. Before describing the correction method according to the present invention, an outline of the influence of the developing bias will be described with reference to FIG. 3A and 3B are schematic diagrams showing the relationship between the exposure energy and the dot area. FIG. 3A schematically shows the exposure energy curve, FIG. 3B schematically shows the exposure beam area, and FIG. 3C schematically shows the developed image area. The energy amounts (areas occupied by the curves) of the exposure energy curves e1 and e2 are assumed to be the same. As is apparent from FIG. 3, even with the same exposure energy (light amount), the beam area differs depending on the variation of the LED light emitting element and the

FIG. 4 is a graph showing the concept of controlling the exposure energy of the LED light emitting element by the current and the light emitting time. FIG. 4A is a diagram in which the LED light emitting element is driven by the reference current to emit light for a predetermined time, and FIG. FIG. 4B) is a diagram in which light is emitted for a predetermined time by driving with a light amount correction current in which the variation of the light amount of the LED light emitting element is corrected. FIG. 6C shows the effect on the density gradation due to the light amount correction, the beam area correction, and the magnitude of the developing bias. FIG. 6 shows a diagram in which the LED light emitting element is driven by a correction current linearly complemented by performing correction at two points to emit light for a predetermined time. Note that one pixel shown in these figures has 4 bits, that is, 16 levels of density gradation data, and the corresponding LED light emitting element emits light in any of the 16 levels of time (horizontal axis). I do. The drive current is composed of 6-bit data, and can be controlled with a current value (vertical axis) in 64 steps.
[0030]
As shown in FIG. 4A, when the correction is not performed for the variation of each LED light emitting element, all the LED light emitting elements are driven by the same reference current i1, and are driven according to the density gradation of the pixel. Light emission is performed for a predetermined time (

In this case, correction data corresponding to the high density gradation pixel and the low density gradation pixel of the development bias data S is recorded in the development bias correction
[0035]
As described above, in the present invention, the correction for the beam area is performed together with the conventional light amount correction, and the correction according to the degree of the developing bias is also performed. FIG. 7A is a diagram showing the effect of correction relating to the developing bias at high density gradation on the granularity of an image. FIG. 7B is a diagram illustrating the influence of the correction related to the developing bias on the low density gradation on the granularity of the image. The vertical axis in the figure represents the granularity, and the horizontal axis represents the developing bias voltage. The curves denoted by reference numerals a to d show the relationship between the granularity according to the
[0036]
If the numerical value of the granularity is high, the printed image will be rough, and if the numerical value is low, the image will be finer. For this reason, uneven density and streaks of a printed image have a property that the higher the granularity, the more noticeable and the easier it is to visually recognize. According to FIG. 7A, when printing a pixel having a high density gradation, as the developing bias increases, the granularity increases unless the correction intensity is increased, and density unevenness and streaks tend to occur. Conversely, it can be seen that, when the developing bias is small, the granularity increases when the correction intensity is increased, and the same problem is likely to occur. In other words, in the case of a high-density gradation pixel, a pixel developed with a large developing bias voltage is likely to have uneven density and streaks.
[0037]
In the printing of low-density gradation pixels shown in FIG. 7B, the larger the developing bias, the greater the granularity unless the correction intensity is weakened, and the more likely uneven density and streaks are generated. Conversely, it can be seen that, when the developing bias is small, the granularity increases when the correction intensity is reduced, and the same problem is likely to occur. In other words, in the case of a low-density gradation pixel, a pixel developed with a small developing bias can easily see uneven density and streaks.
[0038]
As described above, it can be seen that even when the same developing bias is applied to the developing device, it is necessary to use different corrections for the developing bias in accordance with the gradation of the pixel density. For example, judging from FIGS. 7A and 7B, when developing with a large developing bias, in order to reduce the granularity for both the high-density gradation pixel and the low-density gradation pixel, it is necessary to use FIG. It is necessary to use the
[0039]
Next, the procedure of the above correction will be described in detail with reference to FIG. FIG. 8 schematically shows a correction method used when driving each LED light emitting element according to the present invention. In addition, for simplicity of description, the description is made such that one LED correction element is formed by five LED light emitting elements. However, in actuality, each LED array chip or 32 to 256 LED light emitting elements are formed. It is preferable that one correction group is formed by the unit LED light emitting elements.
[0040]
In FIG. 8, in a first step S1, a pixel to be printed is fetched, and its pixel number N is assigned in order from 1. The number of the first pixel is set to 1 and up to the
[0041]
The larger the absolute value of the ratio P calculated in this way, the larger the beam area of the LED light emitting element corresponding to the pixel varies from the group average. Therefore, in step S9, the ratio P obtained as described above is ranked for correction, and a coefficient required for correction corresponding to the rank is calculated by an experiment or the like, and the beam area correction value is calculated. B. In the next step S10-1, based on the read development bias data S, the correction is applied weakly if the development bias is large as described above, and the correction is applied low if the development bias is small as described above. Weighting is performed with the development bias data S at the time of the density gradation, and the a-point correction coefficient Ca is calculated. In step S10-2, similarly, based on the developing bias data S, the high-density process is performed such that the correction is applied strongly with the large developing bias as described above, and the correction is applied weakly with the small developing bias. Weighting is performed with the developing bias data S at the time of adjustment, and a b-point correction coefficient Cb is calculated.
[0042]
In the next step S11-1, the reference driving value of the LED light emitting element is multiplied by the light amount correction value L of each pixel, and further multiplied by the a point correction coefficient Ca obtained above, whereby the a point driving of each LED light emitting element is performed. The value Ia is calculated, and in step S11-2, the reference drive value of the LED light emitting element is multiplied by the light amount correction value L of each pixel, and further multiplied by the b-point correction coefficient Cb obtained above, thereby obtaining each LED light emitting element. Is calculated at point b. Finally, in step S11-3, it is possible to obtain a corrected drive value Ig obtained by linearly complementing the straight line of the slope based on the a-point drive value Ia and the b-point drive value Ib with the pixel density gradation G.
[0043]
In the above-described manner, the LED light emitting elements of the LED
[0044]
FIG. 9 schematically shows another correction method used when driving each LED light emitting element according to the present invention. In addition, for simplicity of description, it is described that one correction group is formed by five LED light emitting elements. However, actually, one LED array chip unit or 32 to 256 LED light emitting elements are used. It is preferable that one correction group is formed by the unit LED light emitting elements.
[0045]
In FIG. 9, in the first step S1, N pixels to be printed for one scan line or one scan block (for example, for each LED array chip) are fetched, and the pixel numbers are set to 1 to N, and a specific pixel is set. Let the number be n. In FIG. 9, the number of the first pixel is set to 1 and the pixels up to the
[0046]
The greater the absolute value of the ratio Pn calculated in this way, the larger the beam area of the LED element corresponding to the pixel varies from the group average. Therefore, in step S9, the ratio Pn obtained as described above is ranked for correction, coefficients necessary for the correction corresponding to the rank are calculated by an experiment or the like, and the beam area correction value is calculated. Bn. In the next step S10-1, the developing bias data S is determined, and as described above, the correction is applied weakly with a large developing bias, and the low density gradation is applied such that the correction is applied strongly with a small developing bias. Weighting is performed based on the development bias data S at the time, and an a-point correction coefficient Ca is calculated.
[0047]
[0048]
In the above method, since the average value (moving average) of the group moving for each pixel of interest is used, the LED light emitting element of the LED
[0049]
In the correction method described with reference to FIGS. 8 and 9, the group of pixels for which the average value M is to be calculated has been described using five pixels following the target pixel. However, the pixel group follows the target pixel. The pixel is not limited to a plurality of pixels and may be a continuous pixel before and after the target pixel. Further, the pixel groups do not need to be continuous, and may be discontinuous pixels that are selected every two pixels. Needless to say, the number of pixels forming a group is not limited to five as described above. At the same time, the numerical values used in FIGS. 8 and 9 are numerical values for facilitating understanding, and the present invention is not limited to these numerical values.
[0050]
Further, in this embodiment, an example in which one pixel has 16 gradations (4 bits) and the driving value of the LED light emitting element is divided into 64 steps (6 bits) has been described, but as long as the gist of the present invention is met. , But are not limited to these numbers. Further, the correction described in FIG. 8 and FIG. 9 may be performed by providing a control unit in the LED
[0051]
【The invention's effect】
In the present invention, the light area correction is performed for the beam area correction for the variation in the beam area of each LED light emitting element transmitted through the lens array, and the effect of the degree of the developing bias at the time of low density gradation and high density gradation of the pixel data. In consideration of the above, a low-density gradation correction value and a high-density gradation correction value are provided, respectively, and the two correction values are linearly complemented to form drive data for driving the LED light emitting element. In an image expressed by a plurality of gradations, an excellent effect is obtained in that unevenness in density and streaks of an image which cannot be efficiently suppressed only by light amount correction as in the related art can be significantly reduced. Further, even when the developing bias voltage is manually adjusted, or when the developing bias voltage is automatically changed by detecting the image density with a sensor, the density unevenness due to the influence of the pixel density and the developing bias is obtained. Can be suppressed efficiently.
[0052]
Further, in the present invention, the beam areas of a plurality of LED light emitting elements before and after including the LED light emitting element to be corrected are averaged, and the average value and the beam area of the LED light emitting element to be corrected are changed according to the magnitude of the difference. The configuration is such that the adverse effects due to the correction performed abruptly in stages are unlikely to occur.
[0053]
Further, in the present invention, the plurality of front and rear LED light emitting elements to be a moving average value move together with the LED light emitting element to be corrected so that the average value of the beam area becomes a moving average value. Therefore, the correction is performed gently, making it difficult to recognize the boundary of the correction.
[0054]
Further, in the present invention, since such an LED array exposure apparatus is used in an image forming apparatus, the characteristics of the toner and the characteristics of the developing device are different for each color, and different developing bias voltages may be set. Even in a tandem-type color image forming apparatus having a developing device, since the occurrence of density unevenness for each color is suppressed, an excellent effect of improving image quality can be obtained.
